In 2016, a massive harmful algal bloom (HAB) of Alexandrium catenella around Chiloe island caused one of the major socio-ecological crisis in Chilean history. This red tide occurred in two distinct pulses, the second, most anomalous, bursting with extreme toxicity on the Pacific coast, weeks after the highly controversial dumping off Chiloe of 4,700 t of rotting salmons, killed by a previous HAB of Pseudochattonella verruculosa. We study the transport of this pollution, analyzing the physical oceanographic conditions during and after the dumping. We find that a cyclonic gyre was present between the dumping site and the coast, visible in satellite altimetry and sea surface temperature data. Using Lagrangian simulations, we confirm that near-surface currents could have brought part of the pollution to the coast, and fueled the bloom. This scenario explains also the anomalous later finding of ammonium near Chiloe. Finally we discuss the mismanagement of risk throughout the events. | Comision Nacional de Investigacion Cientifica y Tecnologica (CONICYT) CONICYT FONDECYT 3150587

Pangasius production in Vietnam is widely known as a success story in aquaculture, the fastest growing global food system because of its tremendous expansion by volume, value and the number of international markets to which Pangasius has been exported in recent years. While certification schemes are becoming significant features of international fish trade and marketing, an increasing number of Pangasius producers have followed at least one of the certification schemes recognised by international markets to incorporate environmental and social sustainability practices in aquaculture, typically the Pangasius Aquaculture Dialogue (PAD) scheme certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). An assessment of the environmental benefit of applying certification schemes on Pangasius production, however, is still needed. This article compared the environmental impact of ASC-certified versus non-ASC certified intensive Pangasius aquaculture, using a statistically supported Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). We focused on both resource-related (water, land and total resources) and emissions-related (global warming, acidification, freshwater and marine eutrophication) categories.

peer reviewed | Metconazole (MEZ), a chiral triazole fungicide, produces enantioselective adverse effects in non-target organisms. Among MEZ's isomers, cis-MEZ displays robust antimicrobial properties. Evaluating MEZ and cis-MEZ's toxicity may mitigate fungicide usage and safeguard non-target organisms. Our study evaluated the toxicity of MEZ and its cis-isomers at concentrations of 0.02, 0.2, 2, and 4 mg L−1. We report stereoselectivity and severe cardiovascular defects in zebrafish, including pericardial oedema, decreased heart rate, increased sinus venous and bulbous arteries distances, intersegmental vessel defects, and altered cardiovascular development genes (hand2, gata4, nkx2.5, tbx5, vmhc, amhc, dll4, vegfaa, and vegfc). Further, MEZ significantly increased oxidative stress and apoptosis in zebrafish, primarily in the cardiac region. Isoquercetin, an antioxidant found in plants, partially mitigates MEZ-induced cardiac defects. Furthermore, MEZ upregulated the Wnt/β-catenin pathway genes (wnt3, β-catenin, axin2, and gsk-3β) and β-catenin protein expression. Inhibitor of Wnt Response-1 (IWR-1) rescued MEZ-induced cardiotoxicity. Our findings highlight oxidative stress, altered cardiovascular development genes, and upregulated Wnt/β-catenin signaling as contributors to cardiovascular toxicity in response to MEZ and cis-MEZ treatments. Importantly, 1R,5S-MEZ exhibited greater cardiotoxicity than 1S,5R-MEZ. Thus, our study provides a comprehensive understanding of cis-MEZ's cardiovascular toxicity in aquatic life. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

International audience |

Aquaculture is crucial in meeting global seafood demand; however, intensification often leads to bacterial diseases that threaten productivity. Dicentrarchus labrax, a key species in European aquaculture, is highly vulnerable to vibriosis, primarily caused by Vibrio harveyi. This study investigates genetic profiles associated with vibriosis by analyzing V. harveyi strains from a seabass farm during 2022 vibriosis outbreaks. Sampling from biofilm and water environments yielded 946 bacterial isolates, of which 56 were identified as V. harveyi using MALDI-TOF MS. ERIC-PCR genotyping revealed four distinct profiles. Despite observing variability in the presence of the 80 tested virulence genes, the overall genetic variation among these profiles was not pronounced. Notably, no single genotypic profile was linked to vibriosis. These findings suggest that the presence of virulence genes alone may not predict disease outbreaks, thus highlighting the need for future research on environmental and transcriptional factors to improve disease control in aquaculture systems.

The aquaculture industry is considered a key sector for the supply of high quality, nutritious food. However, growth of the aquaculture sector has been slow, particularly in Europe, and this is amongst others linked to concerns about environmental impacts of this industry. Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (IMTA) has been identified as an important technology to sustainably improve freshwater fish production. In IMTA, economically valuable extractive species feed on waste produced by other species, remediating wastewater, and minimising the environmental impact of aquaculture. This study presents quantitative information on the nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency of a duckweed-based, pilot, semi-commercial IMTA system. Duckweed species are free-floating freshwater species belonging to the family of Lemnaceae. The aim of this study was to test the potential of duckweed-based IMTA under realistic environmental conditions. Three different approaches were used to assess remediation capacity; 1) assessment of water quality pre and post treatment with duckweed showed that the system can remove 0.78 and 0.38 T y⁻¹ of Total Nitrogen (TN) and Total Phosphorus (TP), respectively 2) based on nitrogen and phosphorus content of newly grown duckweed biomass, it was shown that 1.71 and 0.22 T y⁻¹ of TN and TP can be removed, respectively 3) extrapolation based on laboratory established nitrogen and phosphorus uptake rates determined that 0.88 and 0.08 T y⁻¹ of TN and TP can be removed by the system. There is substantive agreement between the three assessments, and the study confirms that duckweed can maintain good quality water in an IMTA system, while yielding high protein content (21.84 ± 2.45%) biomass. The quantitative data on nitrogen and phosphorus removal inform the design of further IMTA systems, and especially create a scientific basis to determine the balance between aquaculture and extractive species.

As the two most commonly used organophosphorus herbicides, glyphosate (Gly) and glufosinate-ammonium (Glu) have unique properties for weed control and algae removal in aquaculture. However, the occurrences and health risks of Gly and Glu in aquaculture ponds are rare known. This study aimed to investigate the occurrences of Gly, AMPA (primary metabolity of Gly) and Glu in surface water, sediment and aquatic products from the grass carp (ctenopharyngodon idella), crayfish (procambarus clarkii) and crab (eriocheir sinensis) ponds around Lake Honghu, the largest freshwater lake in Hubei province, China where aquaculture has become the local pillar industry. Three age groups (children, young adults, middle-aged and elderly) exposure to these compounds through edible aquatic products (muscle) consumption were also assessed by target hazard quotient (THQ) method. The results indicated that Gly, AMPA and Glu were widely occurred in surface water, sediment and organisms in the fish, crayfish and crab ponds. AMPA was more likely to accumulate in the intestine of aquatic products than Gly and Glu. According to the total THQ value (1.04>1), muscle consumption of grass carp may pose potential risk to children.

Aquaculture has significant impacts on freshwater lakes, but plankton communities, as key components of the microbial food web, are rarely considered when assessing the impacts of aquaculture. Revealing the dynamics of plankton communities, including bacterioplankton, phytoplankton and zooplankton, under anthropological disturbances is critical for predicting the freshwater ecosystem functioning in response to future environmental changes. In the present study, we examined the impacts of aquaculture on water quality, plankton diversity and the co-occurrence patterns within plankton metacommunities in a shallow freshwater lake. The study zones are influenced by the 20-year historical intensive aquaculture, but now they are undergoing either ecological aquaculture or ecological restoration. Our results showed that ecological aquaculture was more efficient in nitrogen removal than ecological restoration. Moreover, lower bacterioplankton diversity but higher phytoplankton and zooplankton diversity were found in the ecological aquaculture and ecological restoration zones compared to the control zone. The lower network connectivity of the plankton metacommunities in the ecological aquaculture and ecological restoration zones indicated the decreasing complexity of potential microbial food web, suggesting a possible lower resistance of the plankton metacommunities to future disturbance. Furthermore, plankton communities of different trophic levels were driven under distinct mechanisms. The bacterioplankton community was primarily affected by abiotic factors, whereas the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities were explained more by trophic interactions. These results revealed the impacts of aquaculture on the plankton communities and their potential interactions, thereby providing fundamental information for better understanding the impacts of aquaculture on freshwater ecosystem functioning.

Antibiotics usage in animal production is considered a primary driver of the occurrence, supply and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. Pig farms and fish ponds are important breeding systems in food animal production. In this study, we compared and analyzed broad ARGs profiles, mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and bacterial communities in a representative pig farm and neighboring fish ponds around Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China. The factors influencing the distribution of ARGs were also explored. The results showed widespread detection of ARGs (from 57 to 110) among 283 targeted ARGs in the collected water samples. The differences in the number and relative abundance of ARGs observed from the pig farm and neighboring fish ponds revealed that ARG contamination was more serious on the pig farm than in the fish ponds and that the water treatment plant on the pig farm was not very effective. Based on the variance partition analysis (VPA), MGEs, bacterial communities and water quality indicators (WIs) codrive the relative abundance of ARGs. Based on network analysis, we found that total phosphorus and Tp614 were the most important WIs and MGEs affecting ARG abundance, respectively. Our findings provide fundamental data on farms in lakeside districts and provide insights into establishing standards for the discharge of aquaculture wastewater.

This study focused on the impacts of aged aquaculture microplastics (MPs) on oysters (Crassostrea gigas). Adult oysters were exposed for two months to a cocktail of MPs representative of the contamination of the Pertuis Charentais area (Bay of Biscay, France) and issuing from oyster framing material. The MPs mixture included 28% of polyethylene, 40% of polypropylene and 32% of PVC (polyvinyl chloride). During the exposure, tissues were sampled for various analyzes (MP quantification, toxicity biomarkers). Although no effect on the growth of adult oysters was noted, the mortality rate of bivalves exposed to MPs (0.1 and 10 mg. L⁻¹ MP) increased significantly (respectively 13.3 and 23.3% of mortalities cumulative). On the one hand, the responses of biomarkers revealed impacts on oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation and environmental stress. At 56 days of exposure, significant increases were noted for Glutathione S-Transferase (GST, 10 mg. L⁻¹ MP), Malondialdehyde (MDA, 10 mg. L⁻¹ MP) and Laccase (LAC, 0.1 and 10 mg. L⁻¹ MP). No variations were observed for Superoxyde Dismutase (SOD). Besides, ingestion of MPs in oyster tissues and the presence in biodeposits was highlighted. In addition, in vitro fertilisations were performed to characterize MPs effects on the offspring. Swimming behavior, development and growth of D-larvae were analysed at 24-, 48- and 72-h after fertilisation. D-larvae, from exposed parents, demonstrated reduced locomotor activity. Developmental abnormalities and arrest as well as growth retardation were also noted. This study highlighted direct and intergenerational effects of MPs from aged plastic materials on Pacific oysters.

Aquaculture ecosystem is a hot-spot for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Rice-crayfish co-culture was considered an eco-friendly aquaculture model and has been widely adopted in China. However, it is unclear whether rice-crayfish co-culture is one of the most eco-friendly models from the perspective of antibiotic resistance profiles. In this study, we evaluated the eco-friendliness of rice-crayfish co-culture, and compared this model with other aquaculture models, from the perspectives of antibiotics and ARG patterns, based on multi-omics and antibiotic profiles. Results showed that the nutrient levels, antibiotic concentrations, dominant microbial genera and ARG patterns in the rice-crayfish co-culture model were profoundly different from the other three aquaculture models (crab only aquaculture model, crayfish only aquaculture model, and crab-crayfish co-culture models). Specifically, the rice-crayfish co-culture model has significantly lower diversity of ARGs and lower potential risks of ARGs when compared to the other aquaculture models. Nutrient and antibiotic concentrations were the important environmental factors for shaping ARG patterns, but compared with environmental factors, the effects of mobile genes and bacteria community on the proliferation and transmission of ARGs were stronger. This study has deepened our understanding of ARGs in freshwater aquaculture ecosystem, and suggested that rice-crayfish co-culture model is a relatively eco-friendly aquaculture model when compared with the other aquaculture models.
