Effect of temperature, gas phase composition, pH and microbial activity on As, Zn, Pb and Cd mobility in selected soils in the Ebro and Meuse Basins in the context of global change

This study estimates the effect of environmental parameters on the mobility of four inorganic contaminants (As, Zn, Pb and Cd) in soils from three areas in the Ebro and Meuse River basins, within the context of global change. An experimental method, applicable to various soil systems, is used to measure the effect of four global-change-sensitive parameters (temperature, gas phase composition, pH and microbial activity). The aqueous phase of batch incubations was sampled regularly to monitor toxic element concentrations in water. Statistical processing enabled discrimination of the most relevant variations in dissolved concentrations measured at different incubation times and under different experimental conditions. Gas phase composition was identified as the most sensitive parameter for toxic element solubilization. This study confirms that total soil concentrations of inorganic pollutants are irrelevant when assessing the hazard for ecosystems or water resource quality. An experimental method applicable for different soil systems enables the determination of the effect of environmental parameters, potentially affected by global change, on the mobilization of inorganic pollutants.

We conducted a field drought manipulation experiment in an evergreen oak Mediterranean forest from 1999 to 2005 to investigate the effects of the increased drought predicted for the next decades on the accumulation of trace elements that can be toxic for animals, in stand biomass, litter and soil. Drought increased concentrations of As, Cd, Ni, Pb and Cr in roots of the dominant tree species, Quercus ilex, and leaf Cd concentrations in Arbutus unedo and of Phillyrea latifolia codominant shrubs. The increased concentration of As and Cd can aggravate the toxic capacity of those two elements, which are already next or within the levels that have been shown to be toxic for herbivores. The study also showed a great reduction in Pb biomass content (100-135 g ha-1) during the studied period (1999-2005) showing the effectiveness of the law that prohibited leaded fuel after 2001. The results also indicate that drought increases the exportation of some trace elements to continental waters. Drought increased biomass concentrations of As and Cd and favors exportation of some trace elements to continental waters in a Mediterranean forest.

This study examined the effects of heavy metals and plant arsenic uptake on soil arsenic distribution. Chemical fractionation of an arsenic-contaminated soil spiked with 50 or 200 mg kg-1 Ni, Zn, Cd or Pb was performed before and after growing the arsenic hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata L for 8 weeks using NH4Cl (water-soluble plus exchangeable, WE-As), NH4F (Al-As), NaOH (Fe-As), and H2SO4 (Ca-As). Arsenic in the soil was present primarily as the recalcitrant forms with Ca-As being the dominant fraction (45%). Arsenic taken up by P. vittata was from all fractions though Ca-As contributed the most (51-71% reduction). After 8 weeks of plant growth, the Al-As and Fe-As fractions were significantly (p < 0.01) greater in the metal-spiked soils than the control, with changes in the WE-As fraction being significantly (p = 0.007) correlated with plant arsenic removal. The plant's ability to solubilize soil arsenic from recalcitrant fractions may have enhanced its ability to hyperaccumulate arsenic. Arsenic taken up by P. vittata was from all fractions with most from the Ca-fraction.

Artificial-lawn mats were used as sediment traps in floodplains to measure sediment input and composition during flood events. To estimate the natural variability, 10 traps were installed during two flood waves at three different morphological units in a meander loop of the River Elbe. The geochemical composition of deposited and suspended matter was compared. The sediment input showed weak correlations with concentration and composition of river water. It also correlated poorly with flood duration and level as well as distance of trap position from the main river. This is due to the high variability of the inundation, different morphological conditions and the variability of sources. The composition of the deposits and the suspended matter in the river water was comparable. Hence, for the investigated river reach, the expected pollution of the floodplain sediments can be derived from the pollution of the suspended matter in the river during the flood wave. The deposition of polluted sediments on floodplains is characterised by a high local variability.

The distributions and biogeochemical cycles of arsenic in the aquatic environment have captured the interest of geochemists due to arsenic's multiple chemical forms, the toxicity of certain arsenic species and large anthropogenic input. Seasonal variations in the dissolved inorganic arsenic concentration and speciation in Jiaozhou Bay, which is located on the west coast of the Yellow Sea in northern China, are presented here. Three cruises were carried out in Jiaozhou Bay under varying tidal regimes, one at neap tide and one at spring tide in August and one at spring tide in October of 2001. In addition to the transect surveys, the main sources of dissolved inorganic arsenate and arsenite in Jiaozhou Bay, including riverine input from five major tributary rivers, atmospheric dry and wet depositions, and groundwater and wastewater input, were collected in different seasons to estimate arsenic transport through different sources. The mean concentrations of total dissolved inorganic arsenic (TDIAs, As (V+III)) in Jiaozhou Bay were statistically comparable between summer and autumn, with higher concentrations at the northwest and northeast parts of the bay, reflecting human activities. The As (III)/TDIAs ratio ranged between 0.045 and 0.68, with an average of 0.16, implying that arsenate was the dominating species in Jiaozhou Bay. A preliminary box model was established to estimate the water-mass balance and arsenic budgets for Jiaozhou Bay, which demonstrated that river inputs and atmospheric depositions were the main sources of arsenic into Jiaozhou Bay. The concentrations of dissolved inorganic arsenic in Jiaozhou Bay have decreased in the last two decades. Compared with other areas in the world, the concentration of arsenic in Jiaozhou Bay remains at the natural level and this region can be characterized as a less disturbed area.

The quantification of arsenic biovolatilization by microscopic filamentous fungi Aspergillus clavatus, A. niger, Trichoderma viride and Penicillium glabrum under laboratory conditions is discussed in this article. The fungi were cultivated on a liquid medium enriched with inorganic arsenic in pentavalent form (H₃AsO₄). Filamentous fungi volatilized 0.010 mg to 0.067 mg and 0.093 mg to 0.262 mg of arsenic from cultivation systems enriched with 0.25 mg (5 mg.l-¹ of arsenic in culture media) and 1.00 mg of arsenic (20 mg.l-¹ of arsenic in culture media), respectively. These results represent the loss of arsenic after a 30-day cultivation from cultivation systems. The production of volatile arsenic derivatives by the A. niger and A. clavatus strains was also determined by hourly sorption using the sorbent Anasorb (CSC) on the 29th day of cultivation.

A glass house study was conducted to investigate the accumulation of arsenic in tissues of five widely cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties of Bangladesh namely BRRI dhan 28, BRRI dhan 29, BRRI dhan 35, BRRI dhan 36, BRRI hybrid dhan 1. Arsenic concentrations were measured in straw, husk and brown and polish rice grain to see the differential accumulation of arsenic among the rice varieties. The results showed that the concentrations of arsenic in different parts of all rice varieties increased significantly (p < 0.05) with the increase of its concentrations in soil. The rice varieties did not showed significant differences in arsenic accumulation in straw, husk, brown and polish grain when the concentrations of arsenic in soil was low. However, at higher concentrations of arsenic in soil, different rice varieties showed significant differences in the accumulations of arsenic in straw, husk and grain. Significantly higher concentrations of arsenic in straw and husk of rice were observed in BRRI hybrid dhan 1 compared to those of other verities. The BRRI dhan 28 and 35 concentrated significantly higher amount of arsenic in brown and polish rice grain compared to those of other rice varieties. The results imply that arsenic translocation from root to shoot (straw) and husk was higher in hybrid variety compared to those of non-hybrid varieties. Arsenic concentrations in brown and polish rice grain of five rice varieties were found to follow the trend: BRRI dhan 28 > BRRI dhan 35 > BRRI dhan 36 > BRRI dhan 29 > BRRI hybrid dhan 1. The order of arsenic contents in tissues of rice was: straw > husk > brown rice grain > polish rice grain.

Siderophores are small molecular weight extracellular organic compounds secreted by microorganisms under iron-starved conditions, used by them to chelate and solubilize iron. Though they are specific ferric iron chelator, but is reported that they bind other metals also, such as divalent heavy metals and actinides because of potentially high metal-siderophore stability constants. Thus metal contaminant fate and transport in subsurface environment can be heavily influenced by siderophores. This approach can be successfully used in removing many toxic metals off the soil which poses a serious health threat. Our research focuses on the correlation between cell growth and siderophore production and chemical characterization of the siderophore type. Its also documents the development of an assay method for the screening of different metals for complexation with siderophores based on the Chrome Azurol S (CAS) assay. The present research aims at batch scale mobilization of arsenic from arsenic contaminated soils using siderophore produced by P. azotoformans and thus evaluating its efficiency as compared to Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic Acid (EDTA), Citric Acid (CA) for the same. FT-IR spectroscopic studies were carried out to determine the interaction between soil, arsenic and siderophore. Results have shown that the cell growth and siderophore production are inversely related. Characterization of siderophore produced by P. azotoformans has revealed that it is of mixed-type catecholate and hydroxamate. Siderophore was found to complex with heavy metals like Cadmium, Lead, Nickel, Arsenic (III, V), Aluminium, Magnesium Zinc, Copper, Cobalt, Strontium other than Iron. Five washings by siderophore, EDTA, CA removed almost 92.8%, 77.3%, 70.0% arsenic respectively as compared to only 33.8% removal by control. Washing of arsenic contaminated soil with tap water revealed that ≈ 65.8% of arsenic in contaminated soil is in freely available or weakly bound form. The IR spectra revealed that hydrogen bonding exists between siderophore, arsenic and soil. Encouraging results of arsenic removal by biomolecule-siderophore can lead to an emerging tool brimming with opportunities for environmental clean up.

Plant age affects its elemental uptake and biomass accumulation, which is important for the application of plants in phytoextraction. In this research, we evaluated the effects of plant age on arsenic accumulation by arsenic hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata after growing in an arsenic-contaminated soil for 8 weeks. The study used a completely randomized design consisting of four plant ages (2, 4, 10 and 16 months) with four replications each. While the fronds of the 2 month old plants contained 36% more arsenic than those of the 4 and 16 month old plants, they were lower in roots. After 8 weeks of growth, the final frond biomass increased by 39, 6.9, 2.0 and 1.1 times compared to the initial frond biomass, from youngest to oldest, respectively. Higher phosphorus and iron accumulation in the roots of older plants may have affected the plant's efficiency to bioconcentrate and transfer arsenic from the roots to the fronds. Greater metabolic activity and higher rate of biomass production lead to higher As accumulation and removal by young plants. This research demonstrated that the use of young plants can be an effective strategy to reduce the time to remediate an As-contaminated site.

In 1998, the pond containing the ore wastes from a pyrite mine in Aznalcóllar (SW, Spain) broke open, spilling some 36×10⁵ m³ of acidic waters and 9 × 10⁵ m³ of tailings containing high concentrations of As and heavy metals. The affected area was around 55 km² of predominantly agricultural soils. After the clean-up of the tailings, many remediation actions were undertaken and the use of blocking agents to immobilize the As was one of the most extended measure. The first experiment performed was to determine the most important soil components in As adsorption under acidic conditions. A second experiment was conducted to neutralize the acidity caused by the solution coming from the tailings undergoing oxidation; an adequate liming material (sugar-refinery scum) was selected and the application rates were established. After the remediation measures, the zone was monitored for three years. A detailed study in four experimental plots located in the most polluted sector was carried out to test the influence of iron oxides in the As immobilization. The use of red soils of the area (rich in free-iron oxides Fed) was established as an appropriate material in the remediation of the area.
