Effects of flow regime and flooding on heavy metal availability in sediment and soil of a dynamic river system
2007
Poot, A. | Gillissen, F. | Koelmans, A.A.
The acid volatile sulphide (AVS) and simultaneously extracted metals (ΣSEM) method is increasingly used for risk assessment of toxic metals. In this study, we assessed spatial and temporal variations of AVS and ΣSEM in river sediments and floodplain soils, addressing influence of flow regime and flooding. Slow-flowing sites contained high organic matter and clay content, leading to anoxic conditions, and subsequent AVS formation and binding of metals. Seasonality affected these processes through temperature and oxygen concentration, leading to increased levels of AVS in summer at slow-flowing sites (max. 37 μmol g-1). In contrast, fast-flowing sites hardly contained AVS, so that seasonality had no influence on these sites. Floodplain soils showed an opposite AVS seasonality because of preferential inundation and concomitant AVS formation in winter (max. 3-30 μmol g-1). We conclude that in dynamic river systems, flow velocity is the key to understanding variability of AVS and ΣSEM. Flow velocity is the key to understanding variability of AVS and ΣSEM in river sediment.

This study assessed the accumulation of Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in the sediment and biomass of P. australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. in a combined constructed wetland (CW) designed for the treatment of domestic wastewater of 750 population equivalents. The CW consists of two vertical subsurface flow (VSSF) reed beds followed by two horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) reed beds. The sediment in the VSSF reed bed was contaminated with Cu (201 ± 27 mg kg-¹ DM) and Zn (662 ± 94 mg kg-¹ DM) after 4 years of operation. Concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in the sediment generally decreased along the treatment path of the CW. On the contrary, higher Al, Cr, Fe, Mn and Ni concentrations were observed in the sediment of the inlet area of the HSSF reed bed. Redox conditions were presumably responsible for this observed trend. Metal concentrations in the reed biomass did not show excessive values. Accumulation in the aboveground reed biomass accounted for only 0.5 and 1.4% of, respectively, the Cu and Zn mass load in the influent. The sediment was the main pool for metal accumulation in the CW.

2007

A quasi steady state respiration test based on Fick's law with a correction term for advective flux, for estimating petroleum hydrocarbon degradation rates, was evaluated in a full-scale (3,000 m³) biopile study. A contaminated clayey sand soil with an average TPH content of 1,421 ± 260 mg kg-¹ soil was treated in a biopile with a fixed venting and heating system. Temperature in the biopile ranged from 12.1 to 36.6°C and soil water content from 15.2 to 35.8 m³ H₂O m-³ soil. Oxygen concentrations in the biopile showed a rapid decrease with depth, before venting and reached constant atmospheric concentration during venting. Measured oxygen consumption in the biopile ranged from -0.04 to -0.68 mol O₂ m-³ soil day-¹. Average oxygen consumption rates calculated with the quasi-steady-state method were significantly (P < 0.05) lower then the oxygen consumption rates calculated with the transient method. It was suggested that the oxygen diffusion was underestimated by the diffusivity models used and that further research is needed to determine relative effective diffusion coefficients in biopiles. Although both respiration testing and petroleum hydrocarbon concentration showed a decrease of oxygen consumption in time, the estimated degradation rate was low compared to the actual decrease in petroleum hydrocarbon concentration. Additional work will have to be done to acquire a more precise knowledge of the relationship between respirometrically determined degradation rates and the actual change in petroleum hydrocarbon concentration in the soil.

2007
Kempter, Heike | Frenzel, Burkhard
Comparing today's atmospheric deposition records with the elemental concentration and the net-uptake rates of ombrotrophic Sphagnum mosses from eight German and Belgian peat bogs revealed that most of all the quality and number of regularly obtained deposition monitoring data is not satisfactory. Moreover, it seems likely that the deposition rate, determined by Sphagnum mosses, does not reliably reflect the record of the total open field deposition indicated by the deposition monitoring data. The moss data, too, show a distinct spatial variability possibly because the geochemistry of peat mosses differs according to the annual growth in height, the total surface area and the surface roughness of the receptor 'peat moss' (special interception deposition). Increased Ti concentration values, for example, combined with a high annual growth rate in height at the hollow moss S. cuspidatum resulted in generally high Ti net-uptake rates and a high Ti inventory (total Ti in sample). We, therefore, suggest that productive Sphagnum species might be able to fix more Ti particles on their larger surface area than less productive species do. Moreover, the results demonstrate that for reliably calculating Sphagnum elemental net-uptake rates, as well as for all quantification of Sphagnum or peat geochemistry on a time and area basis, an accurate knowledge of the period the collected samples were exposed to atmospheric deposition is required. In particular, to do reliable reconstructions of past atmospheric deposition rates using peat deposits, further studies are needed to precisely specify the spatial variability in the geochemistry of living Sphagnum mosses.
