Bridging the gap between traffic generated health stressors in urban areas: Predicting xylene levels in EU cities

Many citizens live, work, commute, or visit traffic intensive spaces and are exposed to high levels of chemical health stressors. However, urban conurbations worldwide present monitoring “shortage” – due to economical and/or practical constraints – for toxic stressors such as xylene isomers, which can pose human health risks. This “shortage” may be covered by the establishment of associations between rarely monitored substances such as xylenes and more frequently monitored (i.e. benzene) or usually monitored (i.e. CO). Regression analysis is used and strong statistical relationships are detected. The adopted models are applied to EU cities and comparison between measurements and predictions depicts their representativeness. The analysis provides transferability insights in an effort to bridge the gap between traffic-related stressors. Strong associations between substances of the air pollution mixture may be influential to interpret the complexity of the causal chain, especially if a synergetic exposure assessment in traffic intensive spaces is considered.

This study investigated associations between long-term exposure to ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and mortality. 58,760 Toronto residents (≥35 years of age) were selected from tax filings and followed from 1982 to 2004. Death information was extracted using record linkage to national mortality data. Land-use regression surfaces for benzene, n-hexane, and total hydrocarbons were generated from sampling campaigns in 2002 and 2004 and assigned to residential addresses in 1982. Cox regression was used to estimate relationships between each VOC and non-accidental, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality. Positive associations were observed for each VOC. In multi-pollutant models the benzene and total hydrocarbon signals were strongest for cancer. The hazard ratio for cancer that corresponded to an increase in the interquartile range of benzene (0.13 μg/m3) was 1.06 (95% CI = 1.02–1.11). Our findings suggest ambient concentrations of VOCs were associated with cancer mortality, and that these exposures did not confound our previously reported associations between NO2 and cardiovascular mortality.

The fate of fuel releases largely depends on the poorly-understood response in microbial community structure and function. Here, we evaluate the impacts to the microbial community resulting from a pilot-scale continuous release (10 months) of a 10% v:v ethanol solution mixed with benzene and toluene (50 mg/L each). Microbial population shifts were characterized by pyrosequencing-based 16S rRNA analysis and by quantitative PCR targeting Bacteria, Archaea, and functional genes for methanogenesis (mcrA), acetogenesis (fhs) and aerobic degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons (PHE), which could occur in hypoxic micro-environments. The release stimulated microbial growth, increased species richness and diversity, and selected for genotypes involved in fermentative degradation (the relative abundance of mcrA and fhs increased 18- and 6-fold, respectively). The growth of putative hydrocarbon degraders and commensal anaerobes, and increases in microbial diversity and in degradation rates suggest an adaptive response that increases the potential for natural attenuation of ethanol blend releases.

Personal exposure to benzene of selected population groups, and impacts of traffic on commuters in Ho Chi Minh City were investigated. The study was carried out in June, July and November 2010. The preliminary data showed that on average, personal exposure to benzene for non-occupational people in Ho Chi Minh is ∼18 μg/m3 and most of the exposure is due to commuting. Benzene exposure during travelling by bus, taxi and motorcycle is, respectively, 22–30, 22–39 and 185–240 μg/m3. Motorcycle–taxi drivers, petrol filling employees and street vendors suffer high daily exposures at 116, 52, 32 μg/m3, respectively. Further measurements are needed for a better risk assessment and finding effective measures to reduce exposure.

Ecotoxicological bioassays, e.g. based on Danio rerio teratogenicity (DarT) or the acute luminescence inhibition with Vibrio fischeri, could potentially lead to significant benefits for detecting on site contaminations on qualitative or semi-quantitative bases. The aim was to use the observed effects of two ecotoxicological assays for estimating the extent of a Benzene groundwater contamination plume. We used a Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) method to rebuild a bivariate probability table that links the observed toxicity from the bioassays with Benzene concentrations. Compared with direct mapping of the contamination plume as obtained from groundwater samples, the MaxEnt concentration map exhibits on average slightly higher concentrations though the global pattern is close to it. This suggest MaxEnt is a valuable method to build a relationship between quantitative data, e.g. contaminant concentrations, and more qualitative or indirect measurements, in a spatial mapping framework, which is especially useful when clear quantitative relation is not at hand.

This study presents the occurrence and risk of PBDEs, new brominated and organophosphorus flame retardants along a river affected by urban and industrial pressures (River Aire, UK). Tris(2-choroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) phosphate (TCPP), tris[2-chloro-1-(chloromethyl)ethyl] phosphate (TDCP) and triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) were detected in all samples, with TCPP present at the highest concentrations, ranging from 113 to 26 050 ng L-1. BDE-209 was detected in most of the sampled sites, ranging from 17 to 295 ng L−1, while hexabromobenzene (HBB) and pentabromoethyl benzene (PBEB) were seldom detected. A risk quotients based on predicted no effect concentrations (PNEC) and flame retardants water concentration proved significant risk for adverse effects for algae, Daphnia and fish in sites close to industrial and urban sewage discharges. This study provides a protocol for the risk estimation of priority and new generation flame retardants based on river concentrations and toxicological values.

Normative regulations on benzene in fuels and urban management strategies are expected to improve air quality. The present study deals with the application of self-organizing maps (SOMs) in order to explore the spatiotemporal variations of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene levels in an urban atmosphere. Temperature, wind speed, and concentration values of these four volatile organic compounds were measured after passive sampling at 21 different sampling sites located in the city of Trieste (Italy) in the framework of a multi-year long-term monitoring program. SOM helps in defining pollution patterns and changes in the urban context, showing clear improvements for what concerns benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene concentrations in air for the 2001–2008 timeframe.

Twenty-one plant leaf materials were screened for benzene adsorption efficiency in the static system, and the leaf material from Dieffenbachia picta, Acrostichum aureum, Ficus religiosa, Lagerstroemia macrocarpa, Alstonia scholaris, and Dracaena sanderiana were found to have high potential for benzene removal. The relation between quantity and composition of wax to benzene removal efficiency was studied. Although high quantities of wax occurred in some leaf materials, low benzene removal was clearly found if compared with other plant materials with the same wax quantity. Alpha-linoleic acid and dodecyl cyclohexane were found to be the main composition in plant leaf materials with high benzene adsorption, and it might be a key factor for benzene removal.

Zamioculcas zamiifolia has the potential to reduce the concentration of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) from contaminated indoor air. It can remove all four pollutant gases. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene uptake per unit area of Z. zamiifolia leaf were about 0.96 ± 0.01, 0.93 ± 0.02, 0.92 ± 0.02, and 0.86 ± 0.07 mmol m -2 at 72 h of exposure, respectively. The physicochemical properties of each BTEX may affect its removal. Benzene, a smaller molecule, is taken up by plants faster than toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene. The toxicity of BTEX on plant leaves and roots was not found. The chlorophyll fluorescence measurement (F v/F m) showed no significantly difference between controlled and treated plants, indicating that a concentration of 20 ppm of each gas is not high enough to affect the photosynthesis of the plants. The ratio of stomata and cuticles showed that 80 % of benzene, 76 % of toluene, 75 % of ethylbenzene, and 73 % of xylene were removed by stomata pathways, while 20, 23, 25, and 26 % of them were removed by cuticles. The BTEX removal efficiency by well-watered Z. zamiifolia was involved with day stomata opening and night closing, while the BTEX removal efficiency by water-stressed Z. zamiifolia can occur both day and night at a slightly lower rate than well-watered plants. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were studied from three heavily polluted rivers (Huijiang, Nancun, and Zengbian Rivers) in Guangzhou, South China. A total of 49 species of VOCs were identified. Nancun River had the highest concentration of total VOCs (TVOCs), which ranged from 1,467 to 5,522 μg m⁻³. Trichloroethene, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m/p-xylene, o-xylene, styrene, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene were the main pollutants. The levels of VOCs evaporated from the three rivers exhibited different patterns. Correlations between the concentrations of major VOCs were established and found to be statistically significant, except for o-xylene. The ratios of toluene/benzene, ethylbenzene/benzene, and xylene/benzene were estimated and found to be higher than widely reported in the literature. TVOC fluxes in the three rivers were calculated to be the range from 24.8 to 765 μg m⁻² h⁻¹. This study provides a regional background for the emission inventories of VOCs from heavily polluted rivers in southern China and provides resource managers with important information to guide remediation and policy concerning VOC emissions to the environment.
