The idea of systems analysis and mathematical modeling for formulating and resolving river pollution issues is of relatively recent vintage and has been applied widely in the last 3 decades. The present study illustrates the utility of Beck-modified Khanna–Bhutiani model (BMKB) to determine the pollution load due to the presence of organic matter in River Ganga from its course from Devprayag to Roorkee through the holy city of India, Haridwar. The study was conducted over a period of 3 years between 2010 and 2013. The study was aimed to verify the BMKB model for River Ganga. This model was simulated and calibrated through the data obtained by model by comparing it with the field data observed manually. Paired T-test were performed for dissolved oxygen (DO) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) between the titrated value and modelled value to determine if there was any statistically significant difference between the means of respective values. The results of T-test revealed statistically significant difference between DO and BOD, i.e., DO t (11)= 3.819, P= 0.003, BOD t(11)= 14.635, P= 0.000. The model presented with a good agreement between the calibrated and observed data, thereby actualizing the validity of the proposed model.

Urbanisation of riverine landscape is an increasing threat to the functionality of river ecosystems. In this study, we identify and classify macroinvertebrates indicator signature traits and ecological preferences.We hypothesised that urban pollution would differentially influence the distribution of macroinvertebrate traits and ecological preferences along a gradient of water quality deterioration. Hence, we identified and classified potential biological indicators traits and ecological preferences that were deemed tolerant of or sensitive to urban pollution gradient in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Physico-chemical variables (water temperature, depth, flow velocity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, electrical conductivity (EC), nitrate, phosphate), and macroinvertebrates were collected from 2008 to 2012 seasonally during the wet and dry seasons once in a month in 11 stations in eight river systems. The results based on RLQ, fourth-corner and Kruskal-Wallis analyses indicate that traits/ecological preferences such as tegumental/cutaneous respiration, cased/tubed body armouring, a preference for silty water, bivoltinism, burrowing and a high tolerance for oxygen depletion, were statistically significantly associated with the heavily impacted stations. These traits were positively correlated with physico-chemical variables such as EC, nitrate and phosphate indicative of urban pollution. On the other hand, traits/ecological preferences such as permanent attachment, crawling, swimming, univoltinism and a moderate sensitivity to oxygen depletion were associated with the least impacted stations and were negatively correlated with physico-chemical variables indicative of urban pollution. Overall, the observed differential responses of traits and ecological preferences to urban pollution along a gradient of water quality impairment suggest that traits and ecological preferences can serve as useful biological indicators and thus supports the growing evidence of the utility of the trait-based approach.

Management of water-quality in a river ecosystem needs to be focused on susceptible regions to eutrophication based on proper measurements. The stress–response relationships between nutrients and primary productivity of phytoplankton allow the derivation of ecologically acceptable thresholds of stressors under field conditions. However, spatio-temporal variations in heterogeneous environmental conditions have hindered the development of locally applicable criteria. To address these issues, we utilized a combination of a geographically specialized artificial neural network (Geo-SOM, geo-self-organizing map) and linear mixed-effect models (LMMs). The model was applied to a 24-month dataset of 54 stations that spanned a wide spatial gradient in the Nakdong River basin. The Geo-SOM classified 1286 observations in the basin into 13 clusters that were regionally and seasonally distinct. Inclusion of the random effects of Geo-SOM clustering improved the performance of each LMM, which suggests that there were significant spatio-temporal variations in the Chla–stressor relationships. These variations arise owing to differences in background seasonality and the effects of local pollutant variables and land-use patterns. Among the 16 environmental variables, the major stressors for Chla were total phosphate (TP) as a nutrient and biological oxygen demand (BOD) as a non-nutrient according to the results of both Geo-SOM and LMM analyses. Based on LMMs with the random effect of the Geo-SOM clusters on the intercept and the slope, we can propose recommended thresholds for TP (18.5 μg L⁻¹) and BOD (1.6 mg L⁻¹) in the Nakdong River. The combined method of LMM and Geo-SOM will be useful in guiding appropriate local water-quality-management strategies and in the global development of large-scale nutrient criteria.

Biodigested coffee processing wastewater (CPW) presents a high organic load and does not meet the limits imposed by legislation (namely in Brazil) for discharge into water bodies. Anaerobic digestion generally cannot provide a satisfactory organic matter reduction in CPW as a significant fraction of recalcitrant compounds still persists in the treated effluent. So, this study aims to find alternative ways to remove refractory organic compounds from this wastewater in order to improve the biodegradability and reduce the toxicity, which will allow its recirculation back into the anaerobic digester. Three treatment approaches (Fenton’s oxidation - Approach 1, Coagulation/flocculation (C/F) - Approach 2, and the combination of C/F with Fenton’s process - Approach 3) were selected to be applied to the biodigested CPW in order to achieve that objective.The application of the Fenton process under the optimal operating conditions (initial pH = 5.0; T = 55 °C, [Fe³⁺] = 1.8 g L⁻¹ and [H₂O₂] = 9.0 g L⁻¹) increased the biodegradability (the BOD₅:COD ratio raised from 0.34 ± 0.02 in biodigested CPW to 0.44 ± 0.01 after treatment) and eliminated the toxicity (0.0% of Vibrio fischeri inhibition) along with moderate removals of organic matter (51.3%, 55.7% and 39.7% for total organic carbon – TOC, chemical oxygen demand – COD and biochemical oxygen demand - BOD₅, respectively). The implementation of a coagulation/flocculation process upstream from Fenton’s oxidation, under the best operating conditions (pH 10–11 and [Fe³⁺] = 250 mg L⁻¹), also allowed to slightly increase the biodegradability (from 0.34 to 0.47) and reduce the toxicity, whereas providing a higher removal of organic matter (TOC = 76.2%, COD = 76.5 and BOD₅ = 66.3% for both processes together). Approach 1 and Approach 3 showed to be the best ones, implying similar operating costs (∼74 R$ m⁻³/∼17 € m⁻³) and constitute an attractive option for managing biodigested CPW.

In this paper, we briefly described the ecological consequences of six space rocket accidents launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome between 1999 and 2018 and focused on an assessment of efficiency of soil remediation following the accidental crash of launch vehicle Proton-M on July 2, 2013, which resulted in the severest environmental impact in the modern Russian space industry. On the day after the accident, the content of carcinogenic unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine and nitrosodimethylamine, as well as nitrate in soils of the crash site exceeded their maximal permissible concentrations by 8900, 6100 and 85 times, respectively. Mitigation measures included soil detoxication by a solution of 10% H₂O₂ and 1% iron complexonate, soil excavation and ploughing. Two years later (in April 2015), both unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine and nitrosodimethylamine concentrations were below 0.05 mg/kg and nitrate concentration did not exceed 3.9 g/kg. As compared to background sites, soils of the crash site had significantly (P-value<0.05) lower values of pH and the content of total organic carbon, basicity from soda and carbonates and higher total nitrogen and soluble salt contents. Soil microbial communities were the most vulnerable component of the disturbed arid ecosystems, as their suppressed condition was indicated by a low biochemical oxygen demand and a very low cellulase activity.

Five endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) were determined in four urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) of the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey (MAM) in two seasonal periods (winter and summer). The MAM, one of the most urbanized areas in Mexico, is characterized by high industrial activity and population density, leading to extensive use of several EDCs. In the MAM, ∼90% of urban and industrial wastewater is treated in WWTPs, where EDCs can be partially eliminated. In this work, dissolved levels of 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethinyl estradiol (EE2), bisphenol A (BPA), 4-nonylphenol (4NP), and 4-tert-octylphenol (4TOP) in wastewater were determined. The EDCs’ determination was carried out through solid-phase extraction (SPE) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). High EDCs levels (0.4–450 ng/L) were found in the influents of WWTPs, while concentrations in the effluents ranged from 0.2 to 26.8 ng/L, with E2, EE2, and 4TOP being the most persistent. The Spearman correlation analysis revealed the association between E2 and EE2 (r = 0.4835, p < 0.05), and between BPA and 4NP (r = 0.5180, p < 0.05), suggesting that these EDCs have similar sources. Also, E2, BPA, and 4TOP were positively correlated with the chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and total suspended solids (TSS) (r = 0.4080–0.5694, p < 0.05), indicating the association of the EDCs with the organic matter in the wastewater. The factor analysis confirmed the significant correlation of COD, BOD, TSS, temperature, and pH with the high occurrence of 4TOP during the summer. It was also confirmed that summer warmer temperatures favored the removal of BPA and 4NP in the studied WWTPs. Finally, the studied sites were classified by cluster analysis in three groups, revealing the impact that seasonality has on the behavior of the selected EDCs.

Lake water pollution has caused many serious ecological issues globally. An emerging public concern over water quality deterioration in lakes has heightened the need to evaluate the water quality of lakes at long-term scales, particularly for those with high hydrological alterations. This study combines the Mann–Kendall (M–K) test and self-organising map (SOM) to characterise and evaluate water quality trends in Dongting Lake, China, from 1991 to 2018, before and after the inauguration of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD). Herein, six water quality parameters were selected, namely pH, permanganate index (CODMₙ), ammonia nitrogen (NH₃–N), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and the five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD₅). Our results show that the concentrations of TN and BOD₅ increase significantly throughout the study period (|Z| ≥ 1.96). The number of abrupt change points for the six water quality parameters in the post-TGD period was greater than that in the pre-TGD period, which indicates an increased risk of water deterioration in the post-TGD period. The SOM results show that the pH values ranged from 7.64 to 7.85 among the four clusters; besides, the concentrations of the remaining water quality parameters from 1991 to 1997 and 2000 to 2003 were relatively lower, suggesting that the water quality in the pre-TGD period was better. The classification of TN and TP ranged from Level Ⅳ–Ⅴ among the clusters, which did not satisfy the level Ⅲ standard for potable water, thereby posing a higher ecological risk to the Dongting Lake. These results indicate the deterioration of the water quality in Dongting Lake during the post-TGD period under the influences of pollution load and hydrological regulation. Therefore, strict controls on the external nutrient loading and hydrological regulations should be considered for water quality management.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play important roles in water purification but are also important source of aerosols. However, the relationship between aerosol characteristics and wastewater treatment process remains poorly understood. In this study, aerosols were collected over a 24-month period from a WWTP using a modified anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process. The aerated tank (AerT) was characterized by the highest respiratory fraction (RF) concentrations (861–1525 CFU/m³) and proportions (50.76%–65.96%) of aerosol particles. Fourteen core potential pathogens and 15 toxic metal(loid)s were identified in aerosols. Mycobacterium was the genus that aerosolized most easily in fine grid, pre-anoxic tank, and AerT. High wastewater treatment efficiency may increase the emission of RF and core potential pathogens. The median size of activated sludge, richness of core potential pathogens in wastewater, and total suspended particulates were the most influential factors directly related to the RF proportions, core community of potential pathogens, and composition of toxic metal(loid)s in WWTP aerosols, respectively. Relative humidity, temperature, input and removal of biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, and mixed liquor suspended solids could also directly or indirectly affect the aerosol characteristics. This study enhances the mechanistic understanding of linking aerosol characteristics to treatment processes and has important implications for targeted manipulation.

This study developed a process of genetically engineered bacteria Rhodococcus erythropolis expressing Nirs and AMO combined with membrane bioreactor (MBR), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane (pRho-NA-MNR) for advanced treatment of landfill leachate. Results demonstrated that pRho-NA-MNR presented higher removal rate of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia nitrogen (N–NH₄), total nitrogen (TN) and total organic carbon (TOC) than activated sludge (AS-MNR) system. Administration of pRho-NA increased nitrification by converting N–NH₄ to nitrite (N–NO₂) and Nitrate (N–NO₃), and promoting denitrification by converting N–NO₂ to nitrogen (N₂) in the landfill leachate treatment, promoted the pH control, increased sludge activity and effluent yield, shortened phase length adaptation under alternating aerobic-anoxic conditions. pRho-NA increased the nitration and denitrifying rate in the aerobic and anaerobic stage in the system by increasing Cyt cd1 and Cyt c expression in the activated sludge. Nitrogen removal by nitrification and denitrification was positively correlated to the concentration of Nirs and AMO expression. Treatment with pRho-NA promoted pollutant removal efficiency of membrane bioreactor, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membrane processes in landfill leachate. In conclusion, data suggest that pRho-NA-MNR facilitates the formation of granular sludge and enhances comparable removal of nitrogen and organic compounds, indicating the practice of this process should be considered in landfill leachate treatment system.

A Fenton like advanced oxidation process (AOP) employing scrap zerovalent iron (SZVI) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was studied for industrial textile wastewater treatment from a textile manufacturing plant located at Medellín, Colombia (South America). The wastewater effluent studied contains a mixture of organic compounds resistant to conventional treatments. The effect of initial pH and SZVI concentration and H2O2 concentration were studied by a response surface methodology (RSM) Box-Behnken design of experiment (BBD). The combined SZVI/H2O2 process led to reductions of 95% color, 76% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 71% of total organic carbon (TOC) at optimal operating conditions of pH = 3, SZVI = 2000 mg/L and [H2O2] = 24.5 mM. Molecular weight distribution measurement (MWD), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, HPLC, biodegradability and toxicity were used to characterize the pollutants after the treatment process finding that the resulting effluent was polluted mostly by low molecular weight carboxylic acids. A remarkable biodegradability enhancement of the effluent was evidenced by a BOD5/COD ratio increase from 0.22 to 0.4; also, the SZVI/H2O2 process successfully reduced the toxicity from 60% to 20% of dead A. Salina crustaceans.
