Melatonin (M) is a pleiotropic molecule that improves plant growth and increases heavy metal tolerance. The role of M for improving plant growth and tolerance under cadmium (Cd) stress, and mitigation of Cd-induced toxicity has not yet been sufficiently examined. Therefore, here we conducted a glasshouse experiment to explore the influence of various M dosages on Cd detoxification and stress-tolerance responses of Brassica napus under high Cd content (30 mg kg⁻¹). The effects of M on the modulation of Cd tolerance in B. napus plants have been investigated using various growth attributes, Cd accumulation and tolerance indices, and secondary metabolic parameters. We found that Cd stress inhibited root growth (by 11.9%) as well as triggered reactive oxygen species accumulation (by 31.2%) and MDA levels (by 18.7%); however, exogenous M substantially alleviated the adverse effect of oxidative stress by decreasing levels of H₂O₂ (by 38.7%), MDA (by 13.8%) and EL (by 1.8%) in the Cd-stressed plants, as compared to the M-untreated plants (control). Interestingly, exogenous M reduced Cd accumulation in roots (∼48.2–58.3-fold), stem (∼2.9–5.0-fold) and leaves (∼4.7–6.6-fold) compared to control plants, which might be due to an M-induced defense and/or detoxification response involving a battery of antioxidants. Overall, addition of the exogenous M to the Cd-stressed plants profoundly enhanced Cd tolerance in B. napus relative to control plants. These results suggested the biostimulatory role (at the physiological and molecular level) of M in improving growth, Cd tolerance, and Cd detoxification in B. napus, which indicate the potentiality of M for green remediation of Cd contaminated soils. This green trial would provide a reference for producing renewable bioenergy crops under Cd stress in contaminated soils. However, these recommendations should be verified under field conditions and the potential mechanisms for the interaction between Cd and M should be explicitly explored.

Grape pomace (GP) is a low-value by-product that contains a significant amount of high value-added products. The huge amount of non-edible residues of GP wastes (seeds, skins, leaves and, stems) produced by wine industries causes’ environmental pollution, management issues as well as economic loss. Studies over the past 15–20 years revealed that GP could serve as a potential source for valuable bioactive compounds like antioxidants, bioactive, nutraceuticals, single-cell protein, and volatile organic compounds with an increasing scientific interest in their beneficial effects on human and animal health. However, the selection of appropriate techniques for the extraction of these compounds without compromising the stability of the extracted products is still a challenging task for the researcher. Based on the current scenario, the review mainly summarizes the novel applications of winery wastes in many sectors such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, livestock fields, and also the bio-energy recovery system. We also summarize the existing information/knowledge on several green technologies for the recovery of value-added by-products. For the promotion of many emerging technologies, the entrepreneur should be aware of the opportunities/techniques for the development of high-quality value-added products. Thus, this review presents systematic information on value-added by-products that are used for societal benefits concerning the potential for human health and a sustainable environment.

The availability of organic matters in vast quantities from the agricultural/industrial practices has long been a significant environmental challenge. These wastes have created global issues in increasing the levels of BOD or COD in water as well as in soil or air segments. Such wastes can be converted into bioenergy using a specific conversion platform in conjunction with the appropriate utilization of the methods such as anaerobic digestion, secondary waste treatment, or efficient hydrolytic breakdown as these can promote bioenergy production to mitigate the environmental issues. By the proper utilization of waste organics and by adopting innovative approaches, one can develop bioenergy processes to meet the energy needs of the society. Waste organic matters from plant origins or other agro-sources, biopolymers, or complex organic matters (cellulose, hemicelluloses, non-consumable starches or proteins) can be used as cheap raw carbon resources to produce biofuels or biogases to fulfill the ever increasing energy demands. Attempts have been made for bioenergy production by biosynthesizing, methanol, n-butanol, ethanol, algal biodiesel, and biohydrogen using different types of organic matters via biotechnological/chemical routes to meet the world’s energy need by producing least amount of toxic gases (reduction up to 20–70% in concentration) in order to promote sustainable green environmental growth. This review emphasizes on the nature of available wastes, different strategies for its breakdown or hydrolysis, efficient microbial systems. Some representative examples of biomasses source that are used for bioenergy production by providing critical information are discussed. Furthermore, bioenergy production from the plant-based organic matters and environmental issues are also discussed. Advanced biofuels from the organic matters are discussed with efficient microbial and chemical processes for the promotion of biofuel production from the utilization of plant biomasses.

This study evaluated three biochars derived from bioenergy by-products — manure-based anaerobic digestate (DIG), distillers’ grains (DIS), and a mixture thereof (75G25S) — as amendments to stabilize Hg in contaminated floodplain soil under long-term saturated (up to 200 d) and cyclic drying and rewetting conditions. Greater total Hg (THg) removal (72 to nearly 100%) and limited MeHg production (<65 ng L⁻¹) were observed in digestate-based biochar-amended systems under initial saturated conditions. Drying and rewetting resulted in limited THg release, increased aqueous MeHg, and decreased solid MeHg in digestate-based biochar-amended systems. Changes in Fe and S chemistry as well as microbial communities during drying and rewetting potentially affected MeHg production. Digestate-based biochars may be more effective as amendments to control Hg release and minimize MeHg production in floodplain soils under long-term saturated and drying and rewetting conditions compared to distillers’ grains biochar.

Energy crops are an important renewable source for energy production in future. To ensure high yields of crops, N fertilization is a common practice. However, knowledge on environmental impacts of bioenergy plantations, particularly in systems involving trees, and the effects of N fertilization is scarce. We studied the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC), which negatively affect the environment by contributing to tropospheric ozone and aerosols formation, from Miscanthus and willow plantations. Particularly, we aimed at quantifying the effect of N fertilization on VOC emission. For this purpose, we determined plant traits, photosynthetic gas exchange and VOC emission rates of the two systems as affected by N fertilization (0 and 80 kg ha−1 yr−1). Additionally, we used a modelling approach to simulate (i) the annual VOC emission rates as well as (ii) the OH. reactivity resulting from individual VOC emitted. Total VOC emissions from Salix was 1.5- and 2.5-fold higher compared to Miscanthus in non-fertilized and fertilized plantations, respectively. Isoprene was the dominating VOC in Salix (80–130 μg g−1 DW h−1), whereas it was negligible in Miscanthus. We identified twenty-eight VOC compounds, which were released by Miscanthus with the green leaf volatile hexanal as well as dimethyl benzene, dihydrofuranone, phenol, and decanal as the dominant volatiles. The pattern of VOC released from this species clearly differed to the pattern emitted by Salix. OH. reactivity from VOC released by Salix was ca. 8-times higher than that of Miscanthus. N fertilization enhanced stand level VOC emissions, mainly by promoting the leaf area index and only marginally by enhancing the basal emission capacity of leaves. Considering the higher productivity of fertilized Miscanthus compared to Salix together with the considerably lower OH. reactivity per weight unit of biomass produced, qualified the C4-perennial grass Miscanthus as a superior source of future bioenergy production.

To simultaneously achieve biological denitrification and bio-energy recovery from sludge, the effects of nitrite on the two-phase anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge were explored. Herein, effects of nitrite on the acidogenic phase are optimized, and the corresponding influence mechanisms are investigated. The experimental results show that the optimal nitrite treatment conditions for improving the acidogenic phase are an initial pH of 8.0, a nitrite addition concentration of 500 mg NO₂⁻-N·L⁻¹, and a fermentation time of six days. By comparing the effects of nitrite and nitrate on the acidogenic phase, it was found that it was the nitrite, not the nitrate, that significantly enhanced the sludge organic solubilization, hydrolysis, and acidification, which are primarily attributed to the redox property of nitrite. Based on an analysis of different forms of soluble nitrogen concentrations, there was no obvious accumulation of nitrite or nitrate during the acidogenic phase. An analysis of the methane production and the volatile solid (VS) degradation during the two-phase AD revealed that the nitrite improved the methane production from the methanogenic phase and enhanced the VS degradation of sludge during the entire two-phase AD process. These findings could provide references for simultaneously treating nitrite-rich wastewater and improving anaerobic sludge digestion via two-phase system.

Fruit wastes can be imperative to elevate economical biomass to biofuels production process at pilot scale. Because of the renewable features, huge availability, having low lignin content organic nature and low cost; these wastes can be of much interest for cellulase enzyme production. This review provides recent advances on the fungal cellulase production using fruit wastes as a potential substrate. Also, the availability of fruit wastes, generation and processing data and their potential applications for cellulase enzyme production have been discussed. Several aspects, including cellulase and its function, solid-state fermentation, process parameters, microbial source, and the application of enzyme in biofuels industries have also been discussed. Further, emphasis has been made on various bottlenecks and feasible approaches such as use of nanomaterials, co-culture, molecular techniques, genetic engineering, and cost economy analysis to develop a low-cost based comprehensive technology for viable production of cellulase and its application in biofuels production technology.

This paper presents a performance evaluation framework for streetscape vegetation. A performance index (PI) is conceived using the following seven traits, specific to the street environments – Pollution Flux Potential (PFP), Carbon Sequestration Potential (CSP), Thermal Comfort Potential (TCP), Noise Attenuation Potential (NAP), Biomass Energy Potential (BEP), Environmental Stress Tolerance (EST) and Crown Projection Factor (CPF). Its application is demonstrated through a case study using fifteen street vegetation species from the UK, utilising a combination of direct field measurements and inventoried literature data. Our results indicate greater preference to small-to-medium size trees and evergreen shrubs over larger trees for streetscaping. The proposed PI approach can be potentially applied two-fold: one, for evaluation of the performance of the existing street vegetation, facilitating the prospects for further improving them through management strategies and better species selection; two, for planning new streetscapes and multi-functional biomass as part of extending the green urban infrastructure.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture are a significant contributor to total Danish emissions. Consequently, much effort is currently given to the exploration of potential strategies to reduce agricultural emissions. This paper presents results from a study estimating agricultural GHG emissions in the form of methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide (including carbon sources and sinks, and the impact of energy consumption/bioenergy production) from Danish agriculture in the years 1990–2010. An analysis of possible measures to reduce the GHG emissions indicated that a 50–70% reduction of agricultural emissions by 2050 relative to 1990 is achievable, including mitigation measures in relation to the handling of manure and fertilisers, optimization of animal feeding, cropping practices, and land use changes with more organic farming, afforestation and energy crops. In addition, the bioenergy production may be increased significantly without reducing the food production, whereby Danish agriculture could achieve a positive energy balance.

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) convert the energy present in wastewater to recover resources like bioelectricity, hydrogen, nutrients, heavy metals, minerals, and industrial chemicals. Various aspects of BES have been discussed here along with their applications and other advantages towards bioenergy recovery. More scientifically organized cross-discipline research efforts are required to scale-up these systems and to get benefit of recovering useful energy from waste materials. Full-scale implementation of bioelectrochemical wastewater treatment is complicated because certain microbiological, technological, and economic challenges need to be resolved that have not previously been encountered in any other wastewater treatment system. BES has higher prospects for in situ remediation of polluted water body or marshy soils and sediments. This technology is likely to evolve as a way of treating sewage, industrial, or agricultural wastewater, not only by lowering the amount of energy required, but at the same time producing electricity, hydrogen, or other chemicals of high value. Thus, after improving the performance of the BES, widening the scope for products recovery by developing better understanding of the process and with efforts to reduce its production cost, it can become a sustainable technology for treatment of wastewater with added advantage of recovery of resources and bioenergy.
