The Western Mediterranean coast is under the influence of anthropogenic pressures, including land use, increasing amounts of dangerous waste and habitat destruction. In 2021, the French RINBIO network (http://www.ifremer.fr/envlit/) originally dedicated to assess chemical contamination in the region, focused on biological effects produced by contaminants and the interaction with natural variability in mussels using an active caging strategy. Cell and tissue level biomarkers were applied for 17 sampling sites divided in three sub-regions categorized by different environmental conditions. Results provide critical information for ecosystem health assessment using mussels as sentinel species in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The influence of natural and confounding factors (trophic condition, reproductive cycle, caging strategy), on biological responses to mild chemical contamination, was discussed and discriminated for health status assessment. Results provide valuable data available as reference values for the assessment of biomarkers and histopathological alterations for large-scale active biomonitoring campaigns in the Western Mediterranean Sea.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the presence and potential toxic effects of plastic fragments (<400 μm) of polyethylene and polypropylene on the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Oysters were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations (0, 0.008, 10, 100 μg of particles/L) during 10 days, followed by a depuration period of 10 days in clean seawater. Effects of microplastics were evaluated on the clearance rate of organisms, tissue alteration, antioxidant defense, immune alteration and DNA damage. Detection and quantification of microplastics in oyster's tissues (digestive gland, gills and other tissues) and biodeposits using infrared microscopy were also conducted. Microplastics were detected in oyster's biodeposits following exposure to all tested concentrations: 0.003, 0.006 and 0.05 particles/mg of biodeposits in oysters exposed to 0.008, 10 and 100 μg of particles/L, respectively. No significant modulation of biological markers was measured in organisms exposed to microplastics in environmentally relevant conditions.

The common mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis was selected as unique biomonitor species to implement a regional monitoring programme, the CIESM Mediterranean Mussel Watch (MMW), in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. As of today, and upon standardization of the methodological approach, the MMW Network has been able to quantify Cs-137 levels in mussels from 60 coastal stations and to produce the first distribution map of this artificial radionuclide at the scale of the entire Mediterranean and Black Seas. While: measured Cs-137 levels were found to be very low (usually <1 Bq kg(-1) wet wt) Cs-137 activity concentrations in the Black Sea and North Aegean Sea were up to two orders of magnitude higher than those in the western Mediterranean Basin. Such effects, far from representing a threat to human populations or the environment, reflect a persistent signature of the Chernobyl fallout in this area. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Marine mercury (Hg) concentrations have been monitored in the French coastline for the last half a century using bivalves. The analyses presented in this study concerned 192 samples of bivalves (mussels: Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis and oysters: Crassostrea gigas and Isognomon alatus) from 77 sampling stations along the French coast and in the French Antilles sea. The goals of this study were to assess MeHg levels in various common bivalves from French coastline, and to identify possible geographic, taxonomic or temporal variations of concentrations. We show that the evolution of methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations covary with total mercury (HgT) concentrations. Moreover, in most of the study sites, HgT concentrations have not decreased since 1987, despite regulations to decrease or ban mercury used for anthropic activities.
