a new high-pressure squeezing technique for pore fluid extraction from terrestrial soils
1997
Böttcher, Gerd | Brumsack, Hans-J. | Heinrichs, H. (Hartmut) | Pohlmann, Markus
A new plastic-lined high-pressure squeezing device has been developed for the extraction of soil pore solutions. At a maximum pressure of 1100 kg cm⁻² the water recovery ranged between 30 and 55% of the total water content. Pressure dependent squeezing experiments showed a general increase in Si, Mn, Mg, Ca, K, Na, Al, Fe, Cd, and Zn concentrations with progressive pore water extraction and increasing pressure, indicating that micro pore solutes have the highest concentrations of solutes. Soil samples with moisture contents of more than about 15% generally provided enough water for major and trace element analyses. The data do not reveal any contamination of the pore fluids from the squeezing device. An advantage of this method is that the solution could be closely related to a specific soil horizon on a cm scale and also to the time of sampling. A further application of this squeezing method is the possibility of pressure dependent sequential squeezing to obtain fluids from different pore spaces.

A study was carried out recently to determine the pollution level of waters in the Karachi harbour and adjoining backwaters. Nine locations were selected, four in the backwaters, two on the seaside, and three in the main navigable channel. Four of these locations were deliberately selected to coincide with those of a previous study conducted in 1982 by Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) so that the values for the concentration of different pollutants could be compared. Analysis was conducted for pH, bicarbonates, Total Solids, Volatile matter in Total Solids, Chlorides, Sulphates, Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium and Potassium. The results indicate that the composition of sea water as far as the concentration of above constituents is concerned has not changed much since the time of the PCSIR study, viz 1982, except that the organic matter concentration has increased. The reasons for this increase in organic loading and its possible impact are discussed in this paper.

1997
BENDELL-YOUNG, LEAH | PICK, F. R.
Base cation (Ca, Mg, Na, K) concentrations in surface waters, pore waters and surface peats were determined along a mineral-poor to mineral-rich fen gradient for 15 south-central Ontario peatlands. Surface waters of the peatlands ranged in pH and alkalinity from 4.5 to 6.3 and 0 to 181 μeqL⁻¹, respectively. Both surface water and pore water Ca and Mg concentrations followed the expected decrease along the mineral-rich to poor-fen gradient. Surface water concentrations of Ca and Mg were significantly lower in the mineral-poor versus the moderately-poor and mineral-rich fens (P <0.05, ANOVA). Pore water concentrations of base cations were 3–5 fold less in mineral-poor vs. mineral-rich fens. In contrast to surface and pore waters, peat base cation concentrations did not decrease along the mineral-rich to mineral-poor fen gradient. Surface peat base cation concentrations were also independent of pore water cation concentrations, and local bedrock geology. Relative concentrations of base cations in surface peats of all peatlands were best described by the exchangeable cation capacity of the surrounding soils.

1997
Bouchard, André
A total of 51 lakes in southern Quebec, Canada, were sampled between 1985 and 1993 to study changes in water chemistry following reductions in SO₂ emissions (main precursor of acid precipitation). Time series analysis of precipitation chemistry revealed significant reductions in concentrations and deposition of SO₄ ²⁻ from 1981 to 1992 in southern Quebec as well as reductions in concentrations and deposition of base cations (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺), NO₃ ⁻ and H⁺ in the western section of the study area. Reductions in atmospheric inputs inputs of SO₄ ²⁻ have resulted in decreased lakewater SO₄ ²⁻ concentrations in the majority of the lakes in our study, although only a small fraction (9 of 37 lakes used in the temporal analysis) have improved significantly in terms of acidity status (pH, acid neutralizing capacity — ANC). The main response of the lakes to decreased SO₄ ²⁻ is a decrease in base cations (Ca²⁺+Mg²⁺), which was observed in 17 of 37 lakes. Seventeen lakes also showed significant increases in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) over the period of study. The resulting increases in organic acidity as well as the decrease in base cations could both play a role in delaying the recovery of our lakes.

1997
Huizar Álvarez, Rafael
Groundwater in the Rio de las Avenidas sub-basin corresponds to the bicarbonate-sodium and bicarbonate-calcium hydrochemical facies, which result from the mineralization of water passing through alkaline rocks (andesites) which prevail in this basin. However, the presence of high concentrations of Na⁺ and K⁺ reveals the existence of an external inflow of these elements: the registered mean values are respectively 94.3 and 19.0 ppm, with the Tèllez and Tizayuca areas standing out with reported values of up to 142 ppm. As for the concentration of soluble water cations, we find in decreasing order: Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, K⁺, along with the anions HCO₃ ⁻, Cl⁻, SO₄ ²⁻, CO₃ ⁻, which combine to form the NaHCO₃, NaCl, Ca(HCO₃)₂, MgSO₄ and KCl salts. The presence of biological contaminants, P and detergents in the groundwater indicates that it may have been contaminated by waste water. In addition to the contaminants mentioned above, large quantities of Pb, B, Zn, Fe, Mn, Cr, Co were detected and although Fe, Pb, Zn, B, and Mn are closely related to the local lithology, the high concentrations of these elements along with the occurrence of Co, Cr, Cd, and Ni confirm the gradual degradation of the aquifers in the sub-basin. The water temperature indicates the existence of low temperature thermal processes in the area.

1997
Traaen, T. S. | Frogner, T. | Hindar, A. | Kleiven, E. | Lande, A. | Wright, R. F.
In June 1983 a whole-catchment liming experiment was conducted at Tjønnstrond, southernmost Norway, to test the utility of terrestrial liming as a technique to restore fish populations in remote lakes with short water-retention times. Tjønnstrond consists of 2 small ponds of 3.0 and 1.5 ha in area which drain a 25-ha catchment. The area is located at about 650–700 meters above sea-level in sparse and unproductive forests of spruce, pine and birch with abundant peatlands. A dose of 3 ton/ha of powdered limestone were spread by helicopter to the terrestrial area. No limestone was added to the ponds themselves. The ponds were subsequently stocked with brown and brook trout.Liming caused large and immediate changes in surface water chemistry; pH increased from 4.5 to 7.0, Ca increased from 40 to 200μeq/L, ANC increased from −30 to +70μeq/L, and reactive-Al decreased from about 10 to 3μmol/L. During the subsequent 11 years the chemical composition of runoff has decreased gradually back towards the acidic pre-treatment situation. The major trends in concentrations of runoff Ca, ANC, pH, Al and NO₃ in runoff are all well simulated by the acidification model MAGIC. Neither the measured data nor the MAGIC simulations indicate significant changes in any other major ion as a result of liming. The soils at Tjønnstrond in 1992 contained significantly higher amounts of exchangeable Ca relative to those at the untreated reference catchment Storgama. In 1992 about 75% of the added Ca remains in the soil as exchangeable Ca, 15% has been lost in runoff, and 10% is unaccounted for.The whole-catchment liming experiment at Tjønnstrond clearly demonstrates that this liming technique produces a long-term stable and favourable water quality for fish. Brown trout in both ponds in 1994 have good condition factors, which indicate that the fish are not stressed by marginal water quality due to re-acidification. The water quality is still adequate after 11 years and >20 water renewals. Concentrations of H⁺ and inorganic Al have gradually increased and approach levels toxic to trout, but the toxicity of these are offset by the continued elevated Ca concentrations. Reduced sulphate deposition during the last 4 years (1990–94) has also helped to slow and even reverse the rate of reacidification. The experiment at Tjønnstrond demonstrates that for this type of upland, remote terrain typical of large areas of southern Norway, terrestrial liming offers a suitable mitigation technique for treating acidified surface waters with short retention times.
