Rare earth elements inevitably release into the soil due to their widespread application. However, it is unclear how they affect the soil animals. The study surveyed the growth and physiological responses of earthworm (Eisenia fetida) exposed into artificial soils spiked with La, Ce, and their mixture, and actual mine soil collected from an abandoned La–Ce mining area (Mianning, Sichuan). The results showed that the 1000–1200 mg/kg combined exposure in two soils induced significant histopathological and phenotypic changes of earthworms. Concentration significantly affected the superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and protein of E. fetida and the effects differentiated with the prolonging duration. These indicators were negatively affected under the La stress ≥800 mg/kg (SOD, POD, and protein), the 1200 mg/kg (SOD), Ce stress ≥1000 mg/kg (protein), and the combination ≥800 mg/kg (SOD, POD) and ≥1000 mg/kg (protein). Artificial combination had −15.04% (SOD), 8.87% (POD), 5.64% (MDA), and −8.34% (protein) difference compared with the contamination soil, respectively. Overall, E. fetida respond sensitively under the La and Ce stress, the antioxidant defense system and the lipid peroxidation were stimulated, and the artificial soil might overestimate eco-toxicological effect.

Rare earth elements (REEs) concentrated in soils have attracted increasing attention about their impact on soil health as emerging contaminants. However, the sources of REEs enriched in soils are diverse and need to be further investigated. Here, surface soil samples were collected from southern Jiangxi Province, China. REEs contents and soil physicochemical properties were determined, and cerium (Ce) and europium (Eu) anomalies were calculated. Moreover, we established a model to further identify the main sources of REEs accumulation in the studied soils. Results show that the abundance of soil REEs reveals larger spatial variation, suggesting spatially heterogeneous distribution of REEs. The median content of light REEs in soils (154.5 mg kg⁻¹) of the study area was higher than that of heavy REEs and yttrium (35.8 mg kg⁻¹). In addition, most of the soil samples present negative Ce anomalies and all the soil samples present negative Eu anomalies implying the combined effect of weathering and potential exogenous inputs on soil REEs. Positive matrix factorization modeling reveals that soil REEs content is primarily influenced by soil parent materials. Potential anthropogenic sources include mining-related leachate, traffic exhaust, and industrial dust. These results demonstrate that the identification of sources of soil REEs is an important starting point for targeted REEs sources management and regulation of excessive and potentially harmful REEs levels in the soil.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the biological and nutritional characteristics of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), an arthropod pest widely distributed in agricultural regions, after exposure to nano-CeO₂ via an artificial diet and to investigate the presence of cerium in the body of this insect through X-ray fluorescence mapping. Nano-CeO₂, micro-CeO₂, and Ce(NO₃)₃ were incorporated into the diet (0.1, 1, 10, and 100 mg of Ce L⁻¹). Cerium was detected in caterpillars fed with diets containing nano-CeO₂ (1, 10 and 100 mg of Ce L⁻¹), micro-CeO₂ and Ce(NO₃)₃, and in feces of caterpillars from the first generation fed diets with nano-CeO₂ at 100 mg of Ce L⁻¹ as well. The results indicate that nano-CeO₂ caused negative effects on S. frugiperda. After it was consumed by the caterpillars, the nano-CeO₂ reduced up to 4.8% of the pupal weight and 60% of egg viability. Unlike what occurred with micro-CeO₂ and Ce(NO₃)₃, nano-CeO₂ negatively affected nutritional parameters of this insect, as consumption rate two times higher, increase of up to 80.8% of relative metabolic rate, reduction of up to 42.3% efficiency of conversion of ingested and 47.2% of digested food, and increase of up to 1.7% of metabolic cost and 8.7% of apparent digestibility. Cerium caused 6.8–16.9% pupal weight reduction in second generation specimens, even without the caterpillars having contact with the cerium via artificial diet. The results show the importance of new ecotoxicological studies with nano-CeO₂ for S. frugiperda in semi-field and field conditions to confirm the toxicity.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) are of major concern due to their high persistence and toxicity. Recently, rare earth elements (REEs) concentration in aquatic ecosystems has been increasing due to their application in modern technologies. Thus, this work aimed to study, for the first time, the influence of REEs (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium and yttrium) and of salinity (10 and 30) on the removal of PTEs (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni and Pb) from contaminated waters by living macroalgae (Fucus spiralis, Fucus vesiculosus, Gracilaria sp., Osmundea pinnatifida, Ulva intestinalis and Ulva lactuca). Experiments ran for 168 h, with each macroalga exposed to saline water spiked with the six PTEs and with the six PTEs plus nine REEs (all at 1 μmol L⁻¹) at both salinities. Results showed that all species have high affinity with Hg (90–99% of removal), not being affected neither by salinity changes nor by the presence of other PTEs or REEs. Cd showed the lowest affinity to most macroalgae, with residual concentrations in water varying between 50 and 108 μg L⁻¹, while Pb removal always increased with salinity decline (up to 80% at salinity 10). REEs influence was clearer at salinity 30, and mainly for Pb. No substantial changes were observed in Ni and Hg sorption. For the remaining elements, the effect of REEs varied among algae species. Overall, the results highlight the role of marine macroalgae as living biofilters (particularly U. lactuca), capable of lowering the levels of top priority hazardous substances (particularly Hg) and other PTEs in water, even in the presence of the new emerging contaminants - REEs. Differences in removal efficiency between elements and macroalgae are explained by the contaminant chemistry in water and by macroalgae characteristics.

During their lifecycle, many engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) undergo significant transformations that may modify their toxicity, behaviour, and fate in the environment. Therefore, understanding the possible environmentally relevant transformations that ENPs may undergo as a result of their surroundings is becoming increasingly important. This work considers industrially produced ceria (CeO2) and focuses on a particle library consisting of seven zirconium-doped variants (Ce1-xZrxO2) where the Zr doping range is x = 0–1. The study assesses their potential transformation in the presence of environmentally relevant concentrations of phosphate. These ENPs have an important role in the operation of automotive catalysts and therefore may end up in the environment where transformations can take place. Samples were exposed to pH adjusted (c. 5.5) solutions made up of either 1 mM or 5 mM each of KH2PO4, citric acid and ascorbic acid and the transformed particles were characterised by means of DLS – size and zeta potential, UV/VIS, TEM, FT-IR, EDX and XRD. Exposure to the phosphate solutions resulted in chemical and physical changes in all ceria-containing samples to cerium phosphate (with the monazite structure). The transformations were dependent on time, ceria concentration in the particles (Ce:Zr ratio) and phosphate to ceria ratio. The presence of Zr within the doped samples did not inhibit these transformations, yet the pure end member ZrO2 ENPs showed no conversion to phosphate. The quite dramatic changes in size, structure and composition observed raise important questions regarding the relevant form of the materials to investigate in ecotoxicity tests, and for regulations based on one or more dimensions in the nanoscale.

The environmental safety of cerium (Ce) applications in many fields has been debated for almost a century because the cellular effects of environmental Ce on living organisms remain largely unclear. Here, using new, interdisciplinary methods, we surprisingly found that after Ce(III) treatment, Ce(III) was first recognized and anchored on the plasma membrane in leaf cells. Moreover, some trivalent Ce(III) was oxidized to tetravalent Ce(IV) in this organelle, which activated pinocytosis. Subsequently, more anchoring sites and stronger valence-variable behavior on the plasma membrane caused stronger pinocytosis to transport Ce(III and IV) into the leaf cells. Interestingly, a great deal of Ce was bound on the pinocytotic vesicle membrane; only a small amount of Ce was enclosed in the pinocytotic vesicles. Some pinocytic vesicles in the cytoplasm were deformed and broken. Upon breaking, pinocytic vesicles released Ce into the cytoplasm, and then these Ce particles self-assembled into nanospheres. The aforementioned special behaviors of Ce decreased the fluidity of the plasma membrane, inhibited the cellular growth of leaves, and finally, decreased plant yield. In summary, our findings directly show the special cellular behavior of Ce in plant cells, which may be the cellular basis of plant yield reduction induced by environmental Ce.

Studies have shown that residents living near rare earth mining areas have high concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) in their hair. However, the adverse effects of REEs on human health have rarely been the focus of epidemiological studies. The goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between REEs in hair and the risk of hypertension in housewives. We recruited 398 housewives in Shanxi Province, China, consisting of 163 women with hypertension (cases) and 235 healthy women without hypertension (controls). We analyzed 15 REEs (lanthanum (La), samarium (Sm), europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd), terbium (Tb), dysprosium (Dy), holmium (Ho), erbium (Er), thulium (Tm), ytterbium (Yb), lutetium (Lu), Yttrium (Y), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), and neodymium (Nd)) and calcium (Ca) accumulated in housewives hair over a period of two years. The results revealed that, with the exception of Eu, concentrations of the REEs in hair were higher in the cases than in the controls. The univariate odds ratios (ORs) of the 14 REEs were >1, and four of the REEs (Dy, Tm, Yb, and Y) also had adjusted ORs > 1. The increasing dose-response trends of the four REEs further indicated the potential for increased hypertension risk. Moreover, the REEs were negatively correlated with Ca content in hair. These results might suggest an antagonistic effect of REEs on Ca in the human body. It was concluded that high intake of REEs might increase the risk of hypertension among housewives.

Both occupational and environmental exposure to asbestos-mineral fibres can be associated with lung diseases. The pathogenic effects are related to the dimension, biopersistence and chemical composition of the fibres. In addition to the major mineral elements, mineral fibres contain trace elements and their content may play a role in fibre toxicity. To shed light on the role of trace elements in asbestos carcinogenesis, knowledge on their concentration in asbestos-mineral fibres is mandatory. It is possible that trace elements play a synergetic factor in the pathogenesis of diseases caused by the inhalation of mineral fibres. In this paper, the concentration levels of trace elements from three chrysotile samples, four amphibole asbestos samples (UICC amosite, UICC anthophyllite, UICC crocidolite and tremolite) and fibrous erionite from Jersey, Nevada (USA) were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). For all samples, the following trace elements were measured: Li, Be, Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Y, Sb, Cs, Ba, La, Pb, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Th, U. Their distribution in the various mineral species is thoroughly discussed.The obtained results indicate that the amount of trace metals such as Mn, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn is higher in anthophyllite and chrysotile samples, whereas the amount of rare earth elements (REE) is higher in erionite and tremolite samples. The results of this work can be useful to the pathologists and biochemists who use asbestos minerals and fibrous erionite in-vitro studies as positive cyto- and geno-toxic standard references.

The ecotoxicity of artificially alterated cerium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-CeO2) suspensions was determined using the freshwater microalgae growth inhibition test. The agglomeration or aggregation state of the alterated suspensions was followed because it represents one of the obvious modifications when nanoparticles reached the environment. In addition, its influence on the ecotoxicity of nanoparticles is currently not well-addressed. Our results showed that the suspensions were stable within the first 24 h and then agglomerate up to 10 μm after 3 and 30 days. The inhibitory effect on the growth of exposed algae was however similar whatever the tested suspension. This supports the fact that the agglomeration state of nano-CeO2, in our conditions, has few influences on the ecotoxicity toward these organisms. The EC50 values were 5.6; 4.1 and 6.2 mg L−1, after exposure to non aged, 3 and 30 days aged suspensions respectively. The interaction between algal cells and nano-CeO2 was also addressed.

In this study, a new magnetic nanocomposite was developed as an efficient and fast-response fluorescence quenching sensor for determination of anticancer drug 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP). For this purpose, the needle-shape fluorescence metal-organic framework of cerium (Ce-MOF) were successfully synthesized on the surface of multiwalled carbon nanotubes using 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid ligand via a facile solvothermal assisted route and magnetized. The accuracy of the proposed synthesis was confirmed using the FT-IR, FE-SEM, XRD, and VSM methods. The obtained product as presented the fluorescence emission in 331 nm by excitation of 293 nm in excitation/emission slit widths of 10.0 nm. The operation of suggested method is based on quenching the fluorescence signal in accordance with increasing the 6-MP concentration. The proposed assay effectively detected the trace amount of 6-MP in the linear range of 1.0 × 10⁻⁶ to 7 × 10⁻⁵ M. The limit of detection and limit of quantification were obtained as 8.6 × 10⁻⁷ and 2.86 × 10⁻⁶ M, respectively. The analyte molecule was determined in real samples with satisfactory recoveries between 98.75 and 105.33.
