In recent years, Feammox has made it possible to remove NH₄⁺-N under anaerobic conditions; however, its application in practical wastewater treatment processes has not been extensively reported. In this study, an up-flow anaerobic biological filter based on limonite (Lim-UAF) was developed to facilitate long-term and stable treatment of domestic sewage. Lim-UAF achieved the highest removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and NH₄⁺-N at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 24 h (Stage II). Specifically, the COD and NH₄⁺-N content decreased from 240.8 and 30.0 mg/L to about 7.5 and 0.35 mg/L, respectively. To analyze the potential nitrogen removal mechanism, the Lim-UAF was divided into three layers according to the height of the reactor. The results showed that COD and NH₄⁺-N removal had remarkable characteristics in Lim-UAF. More than 55.0% of influent COD was removed in the lower layer (0–30 cm) of Lim-UAF, while 60.2% of NH₄⁺-N was removed in the middle layer (30–60 cm). Microbial community analysis showed that the community structure in the middle and upper layers (60–90 cm) was relatively similar, but quite different from that of the lower layer. Heterotrophic bacteria were dominant in the lower layer, whereas iron-reducing and iron-oxidizing bacteria were enriched in the upper and middle layers. The formation of secondary minerals (siderite and Fe(OH)₃) indicated that the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle occurred in Lim-UAF, which was triggered by the Feammox and NDFO processes. In summary, limonite was used to develop a single-stage wastewater treatment process for simultaneously removing organic matter and NH₄⁺-N, which has excellent application prospects in domestic sewage treatment.

2022
Truzsi, Alexandra | Elek, János | Fábián, István
The removal of organic pollutants presents a major challenge for drinking water treatment plants. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) is essentially the measure of oxidizable organic matter in source waters. In this study, we report that COD can efficiently be decreased by adding Fe(II)/Fe(III) and sulfite ion to the source water while purging it with air. In this process, oxygen is activated to oxidize the main constituents of COD, i.e. organic substrates, via the generation of reactive inorganic oxysulfur radical ions. In the end, the total amount of sulfur(IV) is converted to the non-toxic sulfate ion. It has been explored how the COD removal efficiency depends on the concentration of S(IV), the total concentration of iron species, the concentration ratio of Fe(II) and Fe(III), the purging rate and the contact time by using source water from a specific location (Királyhegyes, Hungary). The process has been optimized by applying the Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Under optimum conditions, the predicted and experimentally found COD removal efficiencies are in excellent agreement: 85.4% and 87.5%, respectively. The robustness of the process was tested by varying the optimum values of the parameters by ± 20%. It was demonstrated that the method is universally applicable because a remarkable decrease was achieved in COD, 62.0–88.5%, with source waters of various compositions acquired from 9 wells at other locations using the same conditions as in the case of Királyhegyes.

Slaughter wastewater is an important and wide range of environmental issues, and even threaten human health through meat production. A high efficiency and stability microsphere-immobilized Bacillus velezensis strain was designed to remove organic matter and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in process of slaughter wastewater. Bacillus velezensis was immobilized on the surface of sodium alginate (SA)/Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Nano Zinc Oxide (Nano-ZnO) microsphere with the adhesion to bio-carrier through direct physical adsorption. Results indicated that SA/PVA/ZnO and SA/ZnO microspheres could inhibit E.coli growth with adding 0.15 g/L nano-ZnO and not affect Bacillus velezensis strain, and the removal the chemical oxygen demand (COD) rates of SA/PVA/ZnO microsphere immobilized cells are 16.99%, followed by SA/ZnO (13.69%) and free bacteria (7.61%) from 50% concentration slaughter wastewater within 24 h at 37 °C, pH 7.0, and 120 rpm, a significant difference was found between the microsphere and control group. Moreover, when the processing time reaches 36 h, COD degradation of SA/PVA/ZnO microsphere is obviously higher than other groups (SA/PVA/ZnO:SA/ZnO:control vs 18.535 : 15.446: 10.812). Similar results were obtained from 30% concentration slaughter wastewater. Moreover, protein degradation assay was detected, and there are no significant difference (SA/PVA/ZnO:SA/ZnO:control vs 35.4 : 34.4: 36.0). The design of this strategy could greatly enhance the degradation efficiency, inhibit the growth of other bacteria and no effect on the activity of protease in slaughter wastewater. These findings suggested that the nano-ZnO hydrogel immobilization Bacillus velezensis system wastewater treatment is a valuable alternative method for the remediation of pollutants from slaughter wastewater with a novel and eco-friendly with low-cost investment as an advantage.

Both heavy metals and radiation could affect the proliferation and dissemination of emerging antibiotic resistance pollutants. As an environmental medium rich in radioactive metals, the profile of antibiotic resistance in uranium mine remains largely unknown. A uranium mine in Guangdong province, China was selected to investigate the distribution and influencing factors of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) including intracellular ARGs (iARGs), adsorbed-extracellular ARGs (aeARGs), and free extracellular ARGs (feARGs). The result indicated that sulfonamide and tetracycline ARB could be generally detected in mining area with the absolute concentrations of 7.70 × 10²–5.18 × 10⁵ colony forming unit/g. The abundances of aeARGs in mine soil were significantly higher than those of iARGs (p < 0.05), highlighting the critical contribution of aeARGs to ARGs spread. The feARGs in mine drainage and its receiving river were abundant (3.38 × 10⁴–1.86 × 10⁷ copies/mL). ARB, aeARGs, and iARGs may correlate with nitrogen species and heavy metals (e.g., U and Mn), and feARGs presented a significant correlation with chemical oxygen demand (p < 0.05). These findings demonstrate the occurrence of ARB and ARGs in uranium mine for the first time, thereby contributing to the assessment and control of the ecological risk of antibiotic resistance in radioactive environments.

To better promote environment friendly development of the coal chemical industry, this study investigated effects of methanol, sodium citrate, and chlorella powder (a type of microalgae) as co-metabolic substances on enhanced anaerobic treatment of coal pyrolysis wastewater with anaerobic sludge. The anaerobic sludge was loaded into four 2 L anaerobic reactors for co-metabolism enhanced anaerobic experiments. Anaerobic reactor 1 (R1) as control group did not add a co-metabolic substance; anaerobic reactor 2 (R2) added methanol; anaerobic reactor 3 (R3) added sodium citrate; and anaerobic reactor 4 (R4) added chlorella powder. In the blank control group, the removal ratios of total phenol (TPh), quinoline, and indole were only 12.07%, 42.15%, and 50.47%, respectively, indicating that 50 mg/L quinoline, 50 mg/L indole, and 600 mg/L TPh produced strong toxicity inhibition function on the anaerobic microorganism in reactor. When the concentration of methanol, sodium citrate, and chlorella was 400 μg/L, the reactors with co-metabolic substances had better treatment effect on TPh. Among them, the strengthening effects of sodium citrate (TPh removal ratio: 44.87%) and chlorella (47.85%) were better than that of methanol (38.72%) and the control group (10.62%). Additionally, the reactors with co-metabolic substances had higher degradation ratios on quinoline, indole, and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The data of extracellular polymeric substances showed that with the co-metabolic substances, anaerobic microorganisms produced more humic acids by degrading phenols and nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds (NHCs). Compared with the control group, the reactors added with sodium citrate and chlorella had larger average particle size of sludge. Thus, sodium citrate and chlorella could improve sludge sedimentation performance by increasing the sludge particle size. The bacterial community structures of reactors were explored and the results showed that Aminicenantes genera incertae sedis, Levinea, Geobacter, Smithella, Brachymonas, and Longilinea were the main functional bacteria in reactor added with chlorella.

Municipal sewage treatment plants (STPs) have been regarded as an important source of organic contaminants in aquatic environment. To assess the impact of STPs on occurrence and toxicity of STP-associated contaminants in receiving waterways, a novel passive sampler modified from polar organic chemical integrative sampler (m-POCIS) was deployed at the inlet and outlet of a STP and several upstream and downstream sites along a river receiving STP effluent in Guangzhou, China. Eighty-seven contaminants were analyzed in m-POCIS extracts, along with toxicity evaluation using zebrafish embryos. Polycyclic musks were the predominant contaminants in both STP and urban waterways, and antibiotics and current-use pesticides (e.g., neonicotinoids, fiproles) were also ubiquitous. The m-POCIS extracts from downstream sites caused significant deformity in embryos, yet the toxicity could not be explained by the measured contaminants, implying the presence of nontarget stressors. Sewage treatment process substantially reduced embryo deformity, chemical oxygen demand, and contamination levels of some contaminants; however, concentrations of neonicotinoids and fiproles increased after STP treatment, possibly due to the release of chemicals from perturbed sludge. Source identification showed that most of the contaminants found in urban waterways were originated from nonpoint runoff, while cosmetics factories and hospitals were likely point sources for musks and antibiotics, respectively. Although the observed embryo toxicity could not be well explained by target contaminants, the present study showed a promising future of using passive samplers to evaluate chemical occurrence and aquatic toxicity concurrently. Zebrafish embryo toxicity significantly decreased after sewage treatment, but higher toxicity was observed for downstream samples, demonstrating that urban runoff may produce detrimental effects to aquatic life, particularly in rainy season. These results highlight the relevance of monitoring nonpoint source pollution along with boosting municipal sewage treatment infrastructure.

Synthetic azo dyes are extensively used in the textile industries, which are being released as textile effluent into the environment presence of azo dyes in the environment is great environmental concern therefore treatment of textile effluent is crucial for proper release of the effluent into the environment. Electrochemical oxidation (EO) is extensively used in the degradation of pollutants because of its high efficiency. In this study, photo-assisted electrooxidation (PEO) followed by biodegradation of the textile effluent was evaluated. The pretreatment of textile effluent was conducted by EO and PEO in a tubular flow cell with TiO₂–Ti/IrO₂–RuO₂ anode and titanium cathode under different current densities (10, 15, and 20 mA cm⁻²). The chemical oxygen demand level reduced from 3150 mg L⁻¹ to 1300 and 600 mg L⁻¹under EO and PEO, respectively. Furthermore, biodegradation of EO and PEO pretreated textile effluent shows reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD) from 1300 mg L⁻¹ to 900 mg L⁻¹and 600 mg L⁻¹to 110 mg L⁻¹, respectively. The most abundant genera were identified as Acetobacter, Achromobacter, Acidaminococcus, Actinomyces, and Acetomicrobium from the textile effluent. This study suggests that an integrated approach of PEO and subsequent biodegradation might be an effective and eco-friendly method for the degradation of textile effluent.

In this study, an interval two-stage fuzzy fractional programming (TFFP) method is developed to facilitate collaborative governance of economy and water resources. Methods of interval programming, fuzzy programming, two-stage programming, and fractional programming are integrated within a general system optimization framework. The main contribution of TFFP is simultaneously addressing various uncertainties and tackling trade-offs between environmental and economic objectives in the optimized schemes for water resources allocation. A case study of a highly urbanized coastal city (i.e., Shenzhen) in China is provided as an example for demonstrating the proposed approach. According to the results, industrial sectors should receive 34.8% of total water supply, while agricultural sectors should receive 1.5%. For the spatial allocation of water resources, Bao An, Long Gang, and Fu Tian districts should be allocated 21.6%, 20.5%, and 14.8% water to promote the economic development. The discharge analysis indicates that chemical oxygen demand (CODcᵣ) and total phosphorus (TP) would be key pollutants. Moreover, the optimized seawater desalination volume would be negligibly influenced by price, while the upper bounds of desalination would be increased with the raising acceptable credibility levels in the period of 2031–2035. Analysis of desalination prices also reveals that the decision-makers should increase the scale of desalination in the period of 2021–2025. In addition, the effectiveness and applicability of TFFP would be evaluated under economic maximization scenarios. The result showed that the economic maximization scenario could obtain higher economic benefits, but it would be accompanied by a larger number of pollutant discharges. It is expected that this study will provide solid bases for planning water resources management systems in coastal regions.

Wastewater treatment plants have been identified as an important gathering spot for nanoplastics, possibly having unintended impacts on important biological nutrient removal processes. The underlying effects of long-term exposure of activated sludge to nanoplastics on nutrient removal and the mechanisms involved remain unclear. This study investigated the effect of polystyrene nanoplastics (Nano-PS) on the treatment performance and microbial community structure, and network in activated sludge. The results indicate that 1000 μg/L Nano-PS had chronic negative effects on the treatment performance in a continuous test over 140 days. Nano-PS had no significant impact in the earlier stages (0–50 days). However, as exposure time increased, the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorous, and total nitrogen (TN) decreased by 2.7, 33.2, and 23.5%, respectively, in the later stages (87–132 days). These adverse impacts further manifested as a change in the topological characteristics, forming a smaller scale, lower complexity, and weaker transfer efficiency of the microbial network. Moreover, the scale and complexity of subnetwork-nitrogen removal bacteria and subnetwork-nitrifier were inhibited, leading to an increase in the effluent TN and NH₄⁺-N. The decreased modules and connectors (keystone taxa) likely caused the deterioration of treatment performance and functional diversity, which was consistent with the change in PICRUSt results. Less competition, denser nodes, and more complex module structures were induced as a strategy to mediate the long-term stress of nano-PS. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to explore the long-term effects of nano-PS on the microbial interaction network of activated sludge, laying an experimental foundation for reducing the risks associated with nanoplastics.

Biofilm-mediated bioremediation of xenobiotic pollutants is an environmental friendly biological technique. In this study, 36 out of 55 bacterial isolates developed biofilms in glass test tubes containing salt-optimized broth plus 2% glycerol (SOBG). Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Congo red- and Calcofluor binding results showed biofilm matrices contain proteins, curli, nanocellulose-rich polysaccharides, nucleic acids, lipids, and peptidoglycans. Several functional groups including –OH, N–H, C–H, CO, COO⁻, –NH₂, PO, C–O, and C–C were also predicted. By sequencing, ten novel biofilm-producing bacteria (BPB) were identified, including Exiguobacterium indicum ES31G, Kurthia gibsonii ES43G, Kluyvera cryocrescens ES45G, Cedecea lapagei ES48G, Enterobacter wuhouensis ES49G, Aeromonas caviae ES50G, Lysinibacillus sphaericus ES51G, Acinetobacter haemolyticus ES52G, Enterobacter soli ES53G, and Comamonas aquatica ES54G. The Direct Red (DR) 28 (a carcinogenic and mutagenic dye used in dyeing and biomedical processes) decolorization process was optimized in selected bacterial isolates. Under optimum conditions (SOBG medium, 75 mg L⁻¹ dye, pH 7, 28 °C, microaerophilic condition and within 72 h of incubation), five of the bacteria tested could decolorize 97.8% ± 0.56–99.7% ± 0.45 of DR 28 dye. Azoreductase and laccase enzymes responsible for biodegradation were produced under the optimum condition. UV–Vis spectral analysis revealed that the azo (−NN−) bond peak at 476 nm had almost disappeared in all of the decolorized samples. FTIR data revealed that the foremost characteristic peaks had either partly or entirely vanished or were malformed or stretched. The chemical oxygen demand decreased by 83.3–91.3% in the decolorized samples, while plant probiotic bacterial growth was indistinguishable in the biodegraded metabolites and the original dye. Furthermore, seed germination (%) was higher in the biodegraded metabolites than the parent dye. Thus, examined BPB could provide potential solutions for the bioremediation of industrial dyes in wastewater.
