Escalating Trends of Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) and its Role in Structuring Pakistan Coastal Zones Barren 全文

The presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas in the muddy ecosystems is consequence of anthropogenic interference. To understand ecosystem health present study was intended to gauge H2S concentrations involved in annihilation of meiofauna and associated aquatic life from four hotspots including Manora channel, Korangi creeks, Sonmiani, and Bhambhore along the Pakistan coastal belt. Using a handheld gas detector device, it was observed that Bhambhore exhibited lower levels of H2S therefore embraces numerous benthic organisms whereas Manora channel (backwater) and Korangi creek area showed elevated level that does not allow macro-organisms to stay around. The diversity varied across locations, with Bhambhore collecting the most species of mudskippers and Manora creeks collecting the rarest. Overall result of this study reveals that H2S 5~274 ppm is alarming. The data of crabs, mudskippers, fishes, mantis shrimps, shells in relation to the environmental variables of temperature, salinity, conductivity dissolved oxygen and H2S were used to develop canonical correspondence analysis. The variability among first two components was 64.47 and 28.44%, eigenvalue (0.154, 0.068 and trace 0.239) respectively. Considering baseline findings of this study, greater efforts are required for ecosystem resilience for the sake of human health concerns.

Marine debris has become a major form of pollution and a serious ecosystem health concern. The present study evaluates the accumulation, origin, and fate of debris in intertidal coral habitats of Mumbai-one of the world's highly populated coastal cities on the west coast of India. Predominantly, seven hermatypic coral species belonging to seven genera and five families were identified and mainly represented by Pseudosidastrea, Porites, and Bernardpora. In terms of number, the mean density of marine debris was 1.60 ± 0.13 SE items/m², which is higher than the global average. The mean density of plastic debris was 1.46 ± 0.14 SE items/m². Approximately 9% of total coral colonies were in physical contact with debris, and 22% of these colonies showed visible signs of partial bleaching. Single use plastic bags and wrappers were dominant plastic debris. The study area was characterized as ‘very poor cleanliness’ according to the Beach Quality Indexes, which include the Clean Coast Index, General Index, and Hazardous Items Index. The numerical model indicates the influence of river discharge and probable areas of plastic accumulation with high tidal currents in this region, maneuvering the spatial advection of litter in the nearshore areas. Combined analysis of ground-truthing and model simulation implies that the possible contributing sources of litter were representatives of land-based and sea-originated. The overall results point to increasing anthropogenic stressors threatening coastal coral communities, including marine debris pollution. It is advocated to adopt an integrated coastal zone management approach supported by coordinated policy frameworks could guide the mitigation of the debris footprint in coastal environments.

Seawater, sediments, and three genera of wild scleractinian corals were collected from four coral reef areas nearshore Liuqiu Island, southwestern Taiwan. Abundance, characteristics (sizes, colors, shapes, and polymer types), and enrichment of microplastics (MPs) in the corals, and their impacts on coral cover were determined. The average MPs abundances were 0.95, 0.77, and 0.36 item/g for Galaxea sp, Acropora spp, and Pocillopora sp, respectively. The MPs abundance was relatively higher on the coral surfaces than inside the skeletons, dominated by blue rayon-fibers, correspondingly observed in seawater and sediments. Large-size colorless MPs tended to be mis-ingested by Galaxea sp. (71%) compared with Pocillopora sp. (43%) and Acropora spp. (31%). The low hard coral cover (12.5%) observed at Yufu (L1) on the northeastern coastal zone nearby tourism center of Liuqiu Island where correspondingly associated with high MPs abundance in seawater (10 item/L), sediments (260 item/kg), and corals (0.60 item/g). Tourism induced sewage discharges and sailing activities significantly contributed to the MPs pollution, probably contributing to the loss of coral cover. High MPs enrichment in corals (EFMP = 25–283) shows that the marine MPs pollution can critically threaten coral reef ecosystems. Fibrous MPs present inside the coral skeleton serve as potential indicator of MPs’ impact on corals—with the dominance of textile-related rayon and polyester/PET microfibers in the coral reef zones. This study provided valuable information for coral conservation and coastal management.

Estuaries are one of the most valuable biomes on earth. Although humans are highly dependent on these ecosystems, anthropogenic activities have impacted estuaries worldwide, altering their ecological functions and ability to provide a variety of important ecosystem services. Many anthropogenic stressors combine to affect the soft sedimentary habitats that dominate estuarine ecosystems. Now, due to climate change, estuaries and other marine areas might be increasingly exposed to the emerging threat of megafires. Here, by sampling estuaries before and after a megafire, we describe impacts of wildfires on estuarine benthic habitats and justify why megafires are a new and concerning threat to coastal ecosystems. We (1) show that wildfires change the fundamental characteristics of estuarine benthic habitat, (2) identify the factors (burnt intensity and proximity to water's edge) that influence the consequences of fires on estuaries, and (3) identify relevant indicators of wildfire impact: metals, nutrients, and pyrogenic carbon. We then discuss how fires can impact estuaries globally, regardless of local variability and differences in catchment. In the first empirical assessment of the impact of wildfires on estuarine condition, our results highlight indicators that may assist waterway managers to empirically detect wildfire impacts in estuaries and identify catchment factors that should be included in fire risk assessments for estuaries. Overall, this study highlights the importance of considering fire threats in current and future estuarine and coastal management.

Beach litter represents a worldwide problem impacting both terrestrial and aquatic environments. In the present study, we assessed beach litter pollution in a prominent touristic site in Brazil, the Jericoacoara National Park. In particular, we applied a delta-generalized additive modeling (GAM) approach in order to investigate pollution hotspots and to provide better guidelines for coastal environmental managers. A total of 7549 litter items were collected, resulting hard and flexible plastics the most abundant type. Our GAM analysis revealed that the distribution of each type of litter was affected by distinct drivers in the protected area, with the extension of the beach, tourist attractions, wind angle, and the distance to water bodies and villages as the most significant explanatory variables. Our model is suitable in predicting litter pollution hotspots on beaches, which is a valuable tool for future guidelines and effective management strategies to prevent beach pollution worldwide.

Total metal concentrations and acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) measurements coupled with simultaneously extracted metals (SEM) were determined in heterogeneous sediments from Maluan Bay, China. Zn was the predominant component of SEM, while Cd was the least. In sediment cores, AVS increased with sediment depth, followed by a decrease with large variation, while SEM fluctuated. Multiple empirical sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) and equilibrium partitioning (EqP) approaches were applied to assess the contamination degree, sediment quality and potential risks associated with bioavailable metals, indicating that not all sediments with [SEM]-[AVS] > 0 were capable of causing toxicity because TOC is also an important metal-binding phase. In order to screen out the physicochemical variability and the complexity and large variance of datasets, multivariate statistical techniques were utilized to comprehensively reveal pollution status by visualized factor scores. Collectively, this study favors the integrative utilization of multifarious methods to scientifically diagnose the pollution characterization for sustainable coastal management.

Bathing water quality plays a key role for public health, is highly important for recreational tourism and therefore monitored in the EU-Directive 2006/7/EC. To identify pollution hot spots, sources and impacts of the directive-change in 2006, including a change of indicator organisms, we evaluated monitoring data of the past 15 years, collected own data, determined survival rates of indicator organisms and applied hydrodynamic modelling in a micro-tidal-system.Due to higher survival rates under turbid conditions and restricted water exchange, shallow, eutrophic bays and lagoons are hot spots of microbial pollution. Rain events cause high microbial emission and distribution. Based on different decay rates, the ratio of E. coli to Enterococci can hint towards a pollution source. Including rain predictions, currents and winds, hydrodynamic models can then assess the daily risk of microbial pollution at each bathing site. They are an important tool to modify beach management and event-based monitoring.

Due to increased concerns regarding fecal pollution at marine recreational beaches, daily relative dog abundance and fecal density were estimated on an intensively managed (Beach 1) and a minimally managed (Beach 2) dog beach in Monterey County, California. Fecal loading and factors predictive of fecal deposition also were assessed. After standardizing for beach area, daily beach use and fecal densities did not differ between beaches and yearly fecal loading estimates revealed that unrecovered dog feces likely contributes significantly to fecal contamination (1.4 and 0.2metrictonnes/beach). Detection of feces was significantly associated with beach management type, transect position relative to mean low tideline, presence of beach wrack, distance to the nearest beach entrance, and season. Methodologies outlined in this study can augment monitoring programs at coastal beaches to optimize management, assess visitor compliance, and improve coastal water quality.
