The opposite impacts of Cu and Mg cations on dissolved organic matter-ofloxacin interaction

Dialysis equilibrium system was applied to investigate the roles of Cu(II) and Mg(II) on DOM-ofloxacin (OFL) interaction. The binding behavior of both cations and OFL were studied. The introduction of Cu(II) increased DOM-OFL interaction, while Mg(II) decreased DOM-OFL binding. Cu(II) binding to DOM was also increased by OFL, while Mg(II) binding was decreased by OFL. The change in OFL binding amount in the absence and presence of cations (ΔCb) was calculated and compared with cation binding (Cb ᵐ). ΔCb/Cb ᵐ was in the range of 1–3 for Cu(II) depending on the applied Cu concentration. Two ternary complexes of DOM-OFL-Cu and DOM-Cu-OFL were proposed. For Mg(II), ΔCb/Cb ᵐ was around −1 at Mg(II) concentrations lower than 1 mM, but decreased up to −5 with increasing Mg(II) concentration. The competitive effect of Mg(II) to OFL was thus proposed. FTIR spectra were collected for mechanistic discussion.

Plastic production pellets collected from beaches of south west England contain variable concentrations of trace metals (Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) that, in some cases, exceed concentrations reported for local estuarine sediments. The rates and mechanisms by which metals associate with virgin and beached polyethylene pellets were studied by adding a cocktail of 5 μg L⁻¹ of trace metals to 10 g L⁻¹ pellet suspensions in filtered seawater. Kinetic profiles were modelled using a pseudo-first-order equation and yielded response times of less than about 100 h and equilibrium partition coefficients of up to about 225 ml g⁻¹ that were consistently higher for beached pellets than virgin pellets. Adsorption isotherms conformed to both the Langmuir and Freundlich equations and adsorption capacities were greater for beached pellets than for virgin pellets. Results suggest that plastics may represent an important vehicle for the transport of metals in the marine environment.

This paper tested if culturing the moss Scorpiurum circinatum (Brid.) Fleisch. & Loeske with metal solutions (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) for 30 days causes metal bioaccumulation and ultrastructural changes. The results showed that despite the high heavy metal concentrations in treatment solutions, treated samples did not show severe ultrastructural changes and cells were still alive and generally well preserved. Bioaccumulation highlighted that moss cells survived to heavy metal toxicity by immobilizing most toxic ions extracellularly, likely in binding sites of the cell wall, which is the main site of metal detoxification.

Here we evaluate the performance and limitations of two frequently used model-types to predict trace element solubility in soils: regression based “partition-relations” and thermodynamically based “multisurface models”, for a large set of elements. For this purpose partition-relations were derived for As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, V, Zn. The multi-surface model included aqueous speciation, mineral equilibria, sorption to organic matter, Fe/Al-(hydr)oxides and clay. Both approaches were evaluated by their application to independent data for a wide variety of conditions. We conclude that Freundlich-based partition-relations are robust predictors for most cations and can be used for independent soils, but within the environmental conditions of the data used for their derivation. The multisurface model is shown to be able to successfully predict solution concentrations over a wide range of conditions. Predicted trends for oxy-anions agree well for both approaches but with larger (random) deviations than for cations.

Co-contamination of ligand-like antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines and quinolones) and heavy metals prevails in the environment, and thus the complexation between them is involved in environmental risks of antibiotics. To understand toxicological significance of the complex, effects of metal coordination on antibiotics' toxicity were investigated. The complexation of two antibiotics, oxytetracycline and ciprofloxacin, with three heavy metals, copper, zinc, and cadmium, was verified by spectroscopic techniques. The antibiotics bound metals via multiple coordination sites and rendered a mixture of various complexation speciations. Toxicity analysis indicated that metal coordination did modify the toxicity of the antibiotics and that antibiotic, metal, and their complex acted primarily as concentration addition. Comparison of EC₅₀ values revealed that the complex commonly was highest toxic and predominately correlated in toxicity to the mixture. Finally, environmental scenario analysis demonstrated that ignoring complexation would improperly classify environmental risks of the antibiotics.

The pH change and the release of organic matter and metals from sediment, due to the potential CO₂ acidified seawater leakages from a CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) site are presented. Column leaching test is used to simulate a scenario where a flow of acidified seawater is in contact with recent contaminated sediment. The behavior of pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and metals As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, with liquid to solid (L/S) ratio and pH is analyzed. A stepwise strategy using empirical expressions and a geochemical model was conducted to fit experimental release concentrations. Despite the neutralization capacity of the seawater-carbonate rich sediment system, important acidification and releases are expected at local scale at lower pH. The obtained results would be relevant as a line of evidence input of CCS risk assessment, in an International context where strategies to mitigate the climate change would be applied.

Rhizosphere soil and dominant plant samples were collected at a brownfield site in New Jersey, USA, during summer 2005 to evaluate plant metal uptake from the contaminated soils. Metal concentrations varied from 4.25 to 978 μg g⁻¹ for As, 9.68–209 μg g⁻¹ for Cr, 23.9–1870 μg g⁻¹ for Cu, and 24.8–6502 μg g⁻¹ for Zn. A wide range of metal uptake efficiencies in the roots, stems and leaves was found in this study. Data showed that (1) Betula populifolia has high Zn, Cu and As accumulations in the root, and high concentrations of Cu and Zn in the stem and the leaf; (2) Rhus copallinum has high accumulation of Zn and Cr in the leaf and Cu in the stem; (3) Polygonum cuspidatum has high accumulations of Cu and As in the root; and (4) Artemisia vulgaris shows high Cu accumulation in the leaf and the stem.

This study aimed at relating the abundance and diversity of invertebrate communities of urban soils to chemical and physical soil characteristics and to identify the taxa most sensitive or tolerant to soil stressors. The invertebrate community of five urban soils in Naples, Italy, was sampled. To assess soil quality invertebrate community indices (Shannon, Simpson, Menhinick and Pielou indices), Acarina/Collembola ratios, and the soil biological quality index (QBS) were calculated. The chemical and physical characteristics of the soils strongly differed. Abundance rather than taxa richness of invertebrates were more affected by soil characteristics. The community was more abundant and diverse in the soils with high organic matter and water content and low metal (Cu, Pb, Zn) concentrations. The taxa more resistant to the urban environment included Acarina, Enchytraeids, Collembola and Nematoda. Collembolans appeared particularly sensitive to changing soil properties. Among the investigated indices, QBS seems most appropriate for soil quality assessment.

Solubilization of particulate Cu by different solutions, mimicking digestive fluids of deposit-feeders, was quantified in stable isotope ⁶⁵Cu-spiked sediments (with 3 days-2 months Cu-sediment contact time or aging). Copper solubilization generally decreased with prolonged aging. However, such decrease became less evident after 1 month and equilibrium of Cu in sediments could be reached after 2 months. Aging effects on Cu solubilization can be explained by the changes in Cu geochemical fractionation with aging: Cu generally transferred from more mobile phases (carbonate and Fe–Mn associated) to more refractory phases (organic associated and residual phase). Besides Cu geochemical fractionation, digestive fluid composition and different Cu solubilization pathways involved, as well as sedimentary organic content, could all affect the digestive solubilization of Cu and its change with aging. Our results emphasize the necessity of considering Cu aging in laboratory sediment toxicity experiments, and in risk assessment of Cu contaminated sediments.

Molecular weight (MW) is a fundamental property of dissolved organic matter (DOM), which potentially affects the binding behavior between DOM and metals. Here, a combined approach of ultrafiltration fractionation, fluorescence excitation-emission matrix quenching and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) was employed to elucidate fluorescent characteristics and metal binding properties of individual MW fractions of DOM in landfill leachate. Four humic-like and two protein-like components were identified by PARAFAC. Among them, a fulvic acid-like component was found to be responsible for Cd(II) binding while Cu(II) inclined to complex with humic-like components rather than protein-like ones. Apart from that, MW was found to exert less influence on metal binding than that of specific metals or components. Key components distributed within various fractions of DOM were the main influence on the impact of MW on metal binding.
