Features of the accumulation of macroplastic on the river bottom in the Mekong delta and the impact on fish and decapods

For the first time, a quantitative assessment of this pollutant was made at the bottom of the rivers of the Mekong basin, and the features of its accumulation and dynamics in bottom sediments and relationship with abundance of fish and decapods were investigated. Sampling of materials for the research was carried out by bottom trawls in the Mekong delta in Vietnam. The amount of macroplastic caught by the trawl from the bottom averaged 33.4 g/100 m². The maximum values of the waste content (up to 923.2 g/100 m²) were confined to the districts of large cities. The distribution of macroplastic was characterized by high spatio-temporal variability. Its amount was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in branches with low monthly flow, in shallow-water areas, as well as in the low-water period. During the flood period, which usually lasts from July to November, the amount of macroplastic at the bottom decreased by an average of 2.5 times. In this study a significant relationship between the number of animals and the mass of macroplastics was statistically proven for most species of fish and decapods. The substrate, containing a significant amount of plastic fragments, attracted aquatic organisms. All in all, we present results for poorly understood processes of transport, deposition and influence of plastic debris in large rivers in regions of monsoon subequatorial climate and show that more efforts should be dedicated to further unravel potentially complex pathways of the plastic exposure to water ecosystems.

Over the past twenty years microplastic pollution has been recorded in all major marine habitats, and is now considered to be of high environmental concern. Correspondingly, the number of reports of microplastic ingestion by marine species is increasing. Despite this, there are still relatively few studies which address the uptake and retention of microplastic in wild populations. Langoustine, Nephrops norvegicus, sampled from the Clyde Sea Area, have previously been seen to contain large aggregations of microplastic fibres. The large proportion of contaminated individuals and size of the microplastic aggregations observed suggests that Nephrops are at high risk of microplastic ingestion. In this study the levels of ingested microplastic in populations of N. norvegicus from the Clyde Sea Area, North Minch and North Sea are examined. Animals in the near-shore, Clyde Sea population showed both a higher percentage of microplastic containing individuals and much greater weights of microplastic retained in the gut. N. norvegicus revealed that only a small percentage of individuals from the North Sea and Minch contained microplastic, predominantly single strands. An expanded sample from the Clyde Sea Area was examined to identify the factors influencing microplastic retention. This revealed that males, larger individuals, and animals that had recently moulted contained lower levels of microplastic. The presence of identified food items in the gut was not seen to correlate with microplastic loads. Observations of microplastic in the shed stomach lining of recently moulted individuals and the lack of aggregations in wild-caught individuals suggests that ecdysis is the primary route of microplastic loss by N. norvegicus. Therefore the large aggregations observed in wild-caught animals are believed to build up over extended periods as a result of the complex gut structure of N. norvegicus.

Methylmercury accumulated at the top of aquatic food chains constitutes a toxicological risk to humans and other top predators. Biomagnification of methylmercury takes place among vertebrates at the higher trophic levels, but this process is less elucidated in benthic invertebrates at the lower trophic levels. Therefore, we investigated the accumulation from food and elimination of methylmercury and inorganic mercury in the benthic sea star Asterias rubens (L.) – a representative of trophic level ~3 - in laboratory experiments. Sea stars fed over 49 days with contaminated mussels (Mytilus edulis) accumulate methylmercury and inorganic mercury to the highest concentrations in the digestive glands, the pyloric caeca, less in stomach, gonad, tube feet, aboral body wall and not to detectable levels in the coelomic fluid. Concerning whole body contents, steady states were reached for both methylmercury and inorganic mercury during the 7-week feeding period and the sea stars reached approximately ½ and ¼ of the concentrations in the mussel food for the two mercury forms, respectively. Half-lives for the elimination of the two mercury forms varied between 45 and 173 days in a 140-d elimination period following the feeding period; inorganic mercury was eliminated faster than methylmercury. Examination of total mercury concentrations in field-collected sea stars confirmed this lack of trophic magnification in relation to the major food items, soft parts of molluscs. We suggest that mercury is not trophically magnified in sea stars 1) because they eliminate methylmercury faster than larger fish and decapod crustaceans and 2) maybe more importantly, because inorganic mercury with its faster elimination constitutes a larger fraction of the total mercury in the food at the lower trophic levels - as opposed to methylmercury which dominates at the higher trophic levels.

Recurrent jellyfish blooms and their impacts on ecosystem deliverables of coastal habitats have become a major ecological concern. In view of this, repercussions of a surge in the jellyfish population on the plankton community were studied in Cochin estuary (CE), the largest tropical estuary along the southwest coast of India. Evaluation of hydrographic attributes and plankton community of the CE during early and late pre-monsoon revealed a marked disparity in its hydrography which favoured an increase in jellyfish abundances during late pre-monsoon, eliciting distinct impacts on the plankton community. The escalation in the jellyfish abundance and their subsequent predation on the crustacean plankton released the phytoplankton community from the grazing pressure resulting in a trophic cascade in the planktonic food web. The indiscriminate feeding of jellyfishes on the ichthyoplankton, decapod larvae, and Copepoda, the primary diet component of forage fishes evoked a potent threat to the fishery potential of CE.

The increasing concerns and management needs on marine biodiversity have escalated the requirement for timely documentation of the marine taxa. We first established a comprehensive ecological checklist of Korean Brachyura through a meta-analysis of 74 documents (since the 1870s). A total of 247 species inhabiting the Korean coastal waters are listed with some key ecological information; habitat, substrate, distribution, and delta +. The crabs predominated on Jejudo Island, at the southernmost point of Korea, followed by the South Sea, West Sea, and East Sea. Portunus trituberculatus and Hemigrapsus sanguineus were cosmopolitan species widely distributed across the three seas. Dynamic oceanographic settings of the South Sea, such as archipelago, Rias coast, varied habitats, and (in)direct influence of Kuroshio warm current, seemed to support high crab diversity. The rocky and subtidal habitats represented biodiversity hotspots. The present study would be a useful baseline for gathering further ecological information of globally important marine taxa in Korea and elsewhere.

In this study, we aimed to identify impacts of plastic ingestion by the ecologically important rocky shore crab Pachygrapsus transversus. We sampled individuals from August 2019 to January 2020 in a reef environment and determined their body condition and diet diversity. In order to test our hypothesis that plastic retention in the foregut is able to decrease the condition factor, we compared it between contaminated and non-contaminated individuals. A correlation test of number of ingested plastic fibres against trophic diversity was made to corroborate the hypothesis that plastic ingestion modifies the feeding patterns. Our results demonstrated that contaminated individuals had lower body condition. Also, we confirmed that debris ingestion can influence feeding patterns. These outcomes were probably linked to starvation and nutrient loss effects. We discussed that this crab is a potential sentinel specie for addressing impacts of solid pollution and a candidate for monitoring plastic contamination in reef environments.

The Columbus crab Planes minutus and Arch-fronted swimming crab Liocarcinus navigator, within their distribution ranges in the Mediterranean, were found rafted on plastic macro-litter floating on the open south Adriatic. While P. minutus was recorded from inanimate flotsam outside of the Mediterranean, L. navigator is herein reported for the first time on floating marine litter. The role of floating litter as habitat or as a dispersal agent for marine invertebrates has received quite attention however, records of decapod crabs drifting on litter has been relatively sparse. Our results suggests that vast quantities of floating debris, comprised primarily of non-biodegradable plastic polymers, probably will augment natural floating substrates in the marine environment, potentially facilitating the spread of invasive species. The dispersion of rafting crabs through floating debris should be investigated given the high potential ecological risk of invasion by exotic species due to the increase in waste production (ecological risk assessment).

This study describes the changes in hydrology, zooplankton communities and abundance in the Senegal River Estuary (SRE) before and after the breaching of the sandbar in October 2003. Samples were taken in 2003 at 3 stations located upstream (DI), in mid estuary (HY) and downstream (RM), and in 2005 at the same stations (RM becoming Old River Mouth: ORM), plus the new river mouth (NRM) resulting from the morphological evolution of the SRE.The study showed marked seasonal variations that affected the structure and distribution of zooplankton as well as major changes caused by the sandbar opening:–increased marine influence throughout the whole SRE,–changes in the horizontal gradients,–arrival of euryhaline species and increase in meroplankton, in particular decapod larvae,–transformation of the ORM area into a slackwater area with limited exchanges and the highest zooplankton numbers during high waters.

The baseline study of Microplastics (MPs) in zooplankton (copepods, chaetognaths, decapods, and fish larvae) from six different zones along India's west coast (off Kanyakumari/Cape Comorin, Kochi, Mangalore, Goa, Mumbai, and Okha) in the Eastern Arabian Sea (EAS) is presented here with their vast ecosystem impacts. This investigation revealed that zooplankton in all six zones accumulated MPs pellets (52.14%), fibres (28.40%), films (10.51%), and fragments (8.95%). The highest average retention of MPs (MPs/individual) was found in fish larvae (av. 0.57 ± 0.18) while copepods had the lowest (av. 0.03 ± 0.01). The presence of low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate was confirmed by Raman Spectra of MPs. The MPs in zooplankton found in this study (av. 22 ± 7 pieces/m³) were nearly 2-fold greater than those found in some of the world's most densely populated areas. It is shown that the strong southerly coastal currents could advect the MPs contaminated water mass too far away, having the potential to affect the fish and corals.

The Chagos Archipelago is geographically remote and isolated from most direct anthropogenic pressures. Here, we quantify the abundance and diversity of decapod crustaceans inhabiting dead coral colonies, representing a standardised microhabitat, across the Archipelago. Using morphological and molecular techniques we recorded 1868 decapods from 164 nominal species within 54 dead coral colonies, but total species estimates (Chao1 estimator) calculate at least 217 species. Galatheids were the most dominant taxa, though alpheids and hippolytids were also very abundant. 32% of species were rare, and 46% of species were found at only one atoll. This prevalence of rarer species has been reported in other cryptofauna studies, suggesting these assemblages maybe comprised of low-abundance species. This study provides the first estimate of diversity for reef cryptofauna in Chagos, which will serve as a useful baseline for global comparisons of coral reef biodiversity.
