peer reviewed | Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) from the Southern Hemisphere carry information on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from their feeding zones in Antarctica to their breeding grounds, making this species a sentinel of contaminants accumulation in the Southern Ocean. This study aimed to evaluate driving factors, namely feeding areas, trophic level, and sex, affecting POP concentrations in the blubber of humpback whales breeding off Mozambique and off Ecuador. Biopsies of free-ranging humpback whales including blubber and skin were collected in 2014 and 2015 from Ecuador (n = 59) and in 2017 from Mozambique (n = 89). In both populations, HCB was the major contaminant followed by DDTs > CHLs > PCBs > HCHs > PBDEs. POP concentrations were significantly higher in males compared to females. HCB, DDTs, HCHs and PBDEs were significantly different between whales from the Mozambique population and the Ecuador population. Sex and feeding habits were important driving factors accounting for POP concentrations in Ecuador whales. The whales from our study had some of the lowest POP concentrations measured for humpback whales in the world. These whales fed predominantly on krill as reflected from the low δ13C and δ15N values measured in the skin. The ecotoxicology of surfactants is attracting wide attention due to the rapidly expanding global application. As interspecific relationships play one of the central roles in structuring biological communities, it is necessary to take it into risk assessments on surfactants. With this aim, our study investigated the interference of three common surfactants on the inducible defense of a freshwater phytoplankton Scenedesmus obliquus. Nonlethal environmentally relevant concentrations (10 and 100 μg L⁻¹) of several surfactants were set up. Results showed that growth and photosynthetic efficiency of Scenedesmus were inhibited during first 96 h, but recovered in the later stage. Surfactants interfered inducible defense of Scenedesmus against Daphnia grazing, and the interference was related to chemical characteristics of surfactants. The anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) enhanced the colony formation even without grazing cues, whereas fewer defensive colonies were formed under the effects of cationic surfactant benzalkonium bromide (BZK) and nonionic surfactant polyoxyethylene (40) nonylphenol ether (NPE). These findings highlighted the sensitivity of grazer-induced morphological defense of Scenedesmus to surfactants even at nonlethal concentrations, which potentially affects the energy and information flow between trophic levels. This study appeals for more attention to take interspecific relationships into consideration in assessing the potential ecological risk of pollutants.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) contamination in the Bohai Sea and its surrounding rivers has attracted considerable attention in recent years. However, few studies have been conducted regarding the distribution of PFASs in multiple environmental media and their distributions between the suspended particles and dissolved phases. In this study, surface water, surface sediment, and air samples were collected at the Bohai Sea to investigate the concentration and distribution of 39 targeted PFASs. Moreover, river water samples from 35 river estuaries were collected to estimate PFAS discharge fluxes to the Bohai Sea. The results showed that total ionic compound (Σi-PFASs) concentrations ranged from 19.3 to 967 ng/L (mean 125 ± 152 ng/L) in the water and 0.70–4.13 ng/g dw (1.78 ± 0.76 ng/g) in surface sediment of the Bohai Sea, respectively. In the estuaries, Σi-PFAS concentrations were ranged from 10.5 to 13500 ng/L (882 ± 2410 ng/L). In the air, ΣPFAS (Σi-PFASs + Σn-PFASs) concentrations ranged from 199 to 678 pg/m³ (462 ± 166 pg/m³). Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was the predominant compound in the seawater, sediment, and river water; in the air, 8:2 fluorotelomer alcohol was predominant. Xiaoqing River discharged the largest Σi-PFAS flux to the Bohai Sea, which was estimated as 12,100 kg/y. Some alternatives, i.e., 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate acid (6:2 FTSA), hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA), and chlorinated 6:2 polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acid (Cl-6:2 PFESA), showed higher levels than or comparable concentrations to those of the C8 legacy PFASs in some sampling sites. The particle-derived distribution coefficient in seawater was higher than that in the river water. Using high resolution mass spectrometry, 29 nontarget emerging PFASs were found in 3 river water and 3 seawater samples. Further studies should be conducted to clarify the sources and ecotoxicological effects of these emerging PFASs in the Bohai Sea area.

Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) have attracted increasing attention due to their large consumption volumes, high bioactivity and potential ecotoxicity. In this study, a total of 150 commonly used drugs were investigated in sediments of Jiaozhou Bay (JZB). Twenty-five target compounds were detected, of which ten were discovered for the first time in marine sediments. The range of total PhAC content was 3.62–21.4 ng/g dry weight. Ketoprofen (2.49 ng/g), oxytetracycline (1.00 ng/g) and roxithromycin (0.97 ng/g) were the preponderant PhACs. PhACs gradually decreased from east to west, and the distribution of PhACs in the sediment was controlled by the source channel, seawater dynamic process and sediment composition. The diatom, organic matter, and clay proportions in the sediments and the nutrients in the overlying water were the most important environmental factors affecting the distribution of PhACs. PhAC pollution in the sediments of the JZB exhibited an increasing trend. Coprostanol could be used as a chemical indicator of the PhAC concentration in JZB sediments. PhACs were mainly derived from direct pollution due to human fecal excretion in the eastern region. Ofloxacin, tetracycline and oxytetracycline were found to pose high or medium risks to aquatic organisms. It is necessary and urgent to improve the treatment technology of drug residues in sewage treatment plants to decrease the pollution of PhAC residues. With the continuous aging of the global population, the use of PhACs will increase rapidly, which may cause more unpredictable threats to the marine ecosystem. Therefore, the monitoring of PhACs in the marine environment needs to be strengthened, and studies on PhAC occurrence and effects must be considered a priority in global environmental research.

Freshwater planarians have been gaining relevance as experimental animals for numerous research areas given their interesting features, such as high regeneration potential, shared features with the vertebrates’ nervous system or the range of endpoints that can be easily evaluated in response to contaminants. Ecotoxicological research using these animals has been steadily increasing in the past decades, as planarians’ potentialities for this research area are being recognized. In this work, we used polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as model contaminants and evaluated effects of exposure to phenanthrene, pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) in planarians. The freshwater planarian Girardia tigrina was chosen and mortality, cephalic regeneration (during and post-exposure), behavioral endpoints and presence of PAHs in tissues, were evaluated. Mortality was only observed in planarians exposed to phenanthrene, with an estimated LC₅₀ of 830 μg L⁻¹. Results indicate that planarian behavioral endpoints were very sensitive in response to sub-lethal concentrations of PAHs, showing a greater sensitivity towards B[a]P and pyrene. Briefly, post-exposure locomotion and post-exposure feeding were significantly impaired by sub-lethal concentrations of all compounds, whereas regeneration of photoreceptors was only significantly delayed in planarians exposed to pyrene. Moreover, levels of PAH-type compounds in planarian tissues followed a concentration-dependent increase, showing uptake of compounds from experimental solutions. The present results highlight the importance of studying alternative and complementary endpoints, such as behavior, not only because these may be able to detect effects at lower levels of contamination, but also due to their ecological relevance. The simplicity of evaluating a wide range of responses to contaminants further demonstrates the utility of freshwater planarians for ecotoxicological research.

Sediments serve as both source and sink of contaminants (e.g., Cu) and biologically important materials (e.g., metals, nutrients). Bioturbation by benthic organisms is ecologically relevant as bioturbation affects the physio-chemical characteristics of sediments, thus altering nutrient and contaminant distribution and bioavailability. We examined the effects of sediment-associated Cu on T. tubifex with conventional toxicity endpoints, such as mortality and growth, and less commonly used non-destructive endpoints, such as bioturbation and feeding. An experimental approach was developed to examine the applicability of simple methods to detect effects on bioturbation and feeding. Two experiments were conducted with 7-day exposures to uncontaminated or Cu-spiked natural sediment at six Cu concentrations to examine Cu bioaccumulation and effects. Endpoints included worm mortality, feeding rate and growth (experiment A) and worm bioturbation (particle diffusion and maximum penetration depth, experiment B). A microparticle tracer was placed on the sediment surface and vertical particle transport was followed over time. Adverse effects were detected for all endpoints (bioturbation, feeding rate, growth and survival): a slight positive effect at the lowest Cu concentrations followed by adverse effects at higher concentrations indicating hormesis. These simple, non-destructive endpoints, provided valuable information and demonstrated that sediment-associated contaminants, such as Cu, can influence bioturbation activity, which in turn may affect the distribution of sediment-bound or particulate pollutants, such as the plastic microparticles studied here. Thus, we suggest to use simple endpoints, such as bioturbation and feeding rate, in ecotoxicity testing since these endpoint account for the influence of interactions between pollutants and benthos and, thus, increase ecological relevance.

The choice of sediment quality assessment methodologies can strongly influence assessment outcomes and management decisions for contaminated sites. While in situ (field) methods may potentially provide greater realism, high costs and/or complex logistics often prevent their use and assessment must rely on laboratory-based methods. In this study, we utilised static-renewal and flow-through ecotoxicology tests in parallel on sediments with a wide range of properties and varying types and concentrations of contaminants. The prediction of chronic effects to amphipod reproduction was explored using multiple linear regression (MLR). The study confirmed the considerable over-estimation of the risk of toxicity of contaminated sediments in field locations when assessments rely on the results of laboratory-based static and static-renewal tests. Improved prediction of toxicity risks was achieved using a combination of contaminant exposure measures from sediment and overlying water. Existing sediment and water quality guideline values (GVs) were effective for predicting risks posed by sediments containing mixtures of common metal and organic contaminants. For 17 sediments with paired data sets from static-renewal and flow-through tests, the best prediction of toxicity to reproduction was achieved using a 2-parameter MLR that included hazard quotients for sediment contaminants and toxic units for dissolved metals (r² = 0.892). The inclusion of particle size, organic carbon and acid-volatile sulfide did not improve toxicity predictions, despite these parameters being recognised as modifying contaminant bioavailability. The use of dilute-acid-extractable metal concentrations in place total recoverable metal concentrations did not improve the predictions. The study also confirmed that sediments existing within the estuarine and marine bays of Sydney Harbour pose significant risks of adverse effects to benthic organisms.

The interactive effects of elevated atmospheric CO₂ and nanoparticles (NPs) on the structure and function of soil bacterial community remain unknown. Here we compared the impacts of CeO₂ (nCeO₂) and Cr₂O₃ (nCr₂O₃) nanoparticles on the taxonomic compositions and functional attributes of bacterial communities under elevated CO₂ (eCO₂). The stimulated enzyme activities (dehydrogenase, acid phosphatase and urease), increased microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and higher bacterial alpha-diversity were observed under the combined effects of eCO₂ and NPs compared to the single NP treatment, indicating eCO₂ could mitigate the adverse effect of NPs on soil microorganisms. NPs and eCO₂ are important factors influencing the alpha- and beta-diversity (17% and 18% of variations were explained) as well as functional profile (20% and 26% of variations were explained) of bacterial communities. Rising CO₂ level promoted the resilience of NP-resistant bacterial populations, primarily the members of Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria and Bacteroidia, which are also characterized by the fast carbon use capability. Moreover, the significantly (P < 0.05) higher metabolic quotient (qCO₂), reduced available carbon and overrepresented carbon metabolism genes at eCO₂vs. ambient CO₂ (aCO₂) indicate the acceleration of available carbon turnover in NP-exposed soils. Correlation analysis revealed that mitigation of NPs toxicity by eCO₂ could be attributed to the remarkable decline of bioavailable metals disassociated from NPs and available carbon level, as well as promotion of the rapid carbon-metabolizing microbes. Our study pointed out the positive role of eCO₂ in alleviating the adverse effect of NPs on microbiological soil environment, and results can serve as important basis in establishing guidelines for lowering the ecotoxicity of NPs.

Despite intensive ecotoxicological research, we still know relatively little about the ecological impacts of many environmental contaminants. Filling these knowledge gaps is particularly important regarding amphibians, because they play significant roles in freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, and their populations are declining worldwide. In this study, we investigated two pollutants that have been poorly studied in ecotoxicology despite their widespread occurrence in surface waters: the herbicide terbuthylazine and the pharmaceutical drug carbamazepine. We exposed two anuran species throughout their larval development to each of two environmentally relevant concentrations of each pollutant, and recorded mortality and 17 sub-lethal endpoints up to several months after exposure. Mortality was low and unrelated to treatment. In agile frogs (Rana dalmatina), we found that treatment with 0.3 μg/L terbuthylazine decreased tadpole activity and reduced fat bodies in juveniles, whereas treatment with 50 μg/L carbamazepine decreased spleen size and increased spleen pigmentation. In common toads (Bufo bufo), treatment with 0.003 μg/L terbuthylazine increased body mass at metamorphosis, treatment with 0.3 μg/L terbuthylazine increased the size of optic tecta, and treatment with 0.5 μg/L carbamazepine decreased hypothalamus size. Treatment with 50 μg/L carbamazepine reduced the feeding activity of toad tadpoles, decreased their production of anti-predatory bufadienolide toxins, and increased their body mass at metamorphosis; juvenile toads in this treatment group had reduced spleen pigmentation. Neither treatments affected the time to metamorphosis, post-metamorphic body mass, or sex ratios significantly. These results show that environmental levels of both terbuthylazine and carbamazepine can have several sub-lethal effects on anurans, which may be detrimental to individual fitness and population persistence in natural conditions. Our findings further highlight that toxic effects cannot be generalized between chemicals of similar structure, because the terbuthylazine effects we found do not conform with previously reported effects of atrazine, a related and extensively studied herbicide.

Lead intoxication is an important threat to human health and a large number of wildlife species. Animals are exposed to several sources of lead highlighting hunting ammunition and lead that is bioavailable in topsoil. Disentangling the role of each in lead exposure is an important conservation issue, particularly for species potentially affected by lead poisoning, such as vultures. The identification of lead sources in vultures and other species has been classically addressed by means of stable-isotope comparisons, but the extremely varied isotope signatures found in ammunition hinders this identification when it overlaps with topsoil signatures. In addition, assumptions related to the exposure of individual vultures to lead sources have been made without knowledge of the actual feeding grounds exploited by the birds. Here, we combine lead concentration analysis in blood, novel stable isotope approaches to assign the origin of the lead and GPS tracking data to investigate the main foraging grounds of two Iberian griffon vulture populations (N = 58) whose foraging ranges differ in terms of topsoil lead concentration and intensity of big game hunting activity. We found that the lead signature in vultures was closer to topsoil than to ammunition, but this similarity decreased significantly in the area with higher big game hunting activity. In addition, attending to the individual home ranges of the tracked birds, models accounting for the intensity of hunting activity better explained the higher blood lead concentration in vultures than topsoil exposure. In spite of that, our finding also show that lead exposure from topsoil is more important than previously thought.
