To improve the denitrification characteristics of anaerobic denitrifying bacteria and obviate the disadvantage of use of explosive hydrogen gas, tourmaline, a polar mineral, was added to the hydrogenotrophic denitrification system in this study. Microbial reduction of nitrate in the presence of tourmaline was evaluated to assess the promotion effect of tourmaline on nitrate biodegradation. The experiment results demonstrated that tourmaline speeded up the cultivation process of bacteria from 65 to 36 days. After domestication of the bacteria, nitrate (50 mg NO₃ ⁻–N L⁻¹) was completely removed within 3 days in the combined tourmaline–bacteria system, and the generated nitrite was also removed within 8 days. The reduction rate in this system is higher relative to that in the bacteria system alone. Efficient removal of nitrate by tourmaline-supported anaerobic bacteria (without external hydrogen input) indicated that tourmaline might act as the sole hydrogen donor to sustain autotrophic denitrification. Besides the production of hydrogen, the promoted activity of anaerobic denitrifying bacteria might be caused by the change of water properties, e.g., the pH of aqueous solutions was altered to about 8.0 and the oxidation–reduction potential decreased by 62 % in the tourmaline system. The distinctive effects of tourmaline on bacteria were related to its electric properties.

In this study, a high sensitive metamaterial sensor has been designed to detect quality of water for water treatment centre. The water samples have been obtained and electrical properties have been measured in microwave range to design the proposed sensor. These electrical properties have been assigned in microwave simulator. Water quality has been investigated by using parametric study and genetic algorithm approach to realize high sensitivity in terms of resonance frequency shift. Around 130 MHz frequency shift has been observed between the water samples. This shift is sufficient to detect instantaneously to the quality of water. This is the first study that metamaterial approach has been used to detect water quality in literature.

2019
Heavy metals are discharged into aquatic environment and causes serious problems to the environment, human’s health, and other organisms. The industrial effluents contain high concentration of heavy metals that should be treated by different technologies. Numerous technologies have been widely used for the remediation of heavy metals such as chemical precipitation, ion exchange, membrane filtration, adsorption, coagulation-flocculation, floatation, electrochemical treatment, bioremediation, and photocatalysis. Among these technologies, photocatalysis has gained much attention due to chemical, physical, and electrical properties of heterogeneous semiconductor nano-photocatalysis. Bismuth vanadate is an n-type semiconductor photocatalyst having 2.4 eV band gap that was widely used from several decades having three monoclinic, tetragonal, and tetragonal zircon structures, but it also have some limitation that can be overcome by modification with metals or non-metals to gain high removal efficiency of heavy metals. This modification can tune its photocatalytic properties like band gap, absorption capacity, and surface area resulting in high photocatalytic performance towards heavy metals detoxification.
