Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are vectors of important parasites and pathogens causing death, poverty and social disability worldwide. The overuse of synthetic insecticides to control mosquito vectors lead to resistance, adverse environmental effects and high operational costs. Therefore, the development of eco-friendly control tools is an important public health challenge. In this study, two different essential oils (EO) (geranium, Geranium maculatum, and bergamot, Citrus bergamia) loaded polymeric nanoparticle (PN) were elaborated using polyethylene glycol (PEG) and chitosan (Qx) as the polymeric matrix/coating. In addition, the mosquito larvicidal acute and residual activity of the PN was evaluated on Culex pipiens pipiens. The physicochemical characterization of PN revealed that PEG-PN had sizes <255 nm and encapsulation efficiency between 68 and 77%; Qx-PN showed sizes <535 nm and encapsulation efficiency between 22 and 38%. From the toxicological test, it was observed that Qx-PN produced higher acute and residual activity than PEG-PN. Overall, this study highlights that polymer nanoparticles containing essential oil are a promising source of eco-friendly mosquito larvicidal products.

Cement-based stabilization/solidification (S/S) is a practical treatment approach for hazardous waste with anthropogenic As sources; however, its applicability for geogenic As-containing soil and the long-term leaching potential remain uncertain. In this study, semi-dynamic leaching test was performed to investigate the influence of S/S binders (cement blended with fuel ash (FA), furnace bottom ash (FBA), or ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS)) on the long-term leaching characteristics of geogenic As. The results showed that mineral admixtures with higher Ca content and pozzolanic activity were more effective in reducing the leached As concentrations. Thus, cement blended with FBA was inferior to other binders in suppressing the As leaching, while 20% replacement of ordinary Portland cement by GGBS was considered most feasible for the S/S treatment of As-containing soils. The leachability of geogenic As was suppressed by the encapsulation effect of solidified matrix and interlocking network of hydration products that were supported by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results. The long-term leaching of geogenic As from the monolithic samples was diffusion-controlled. Increasing the Ca content in the samples led to a decrease in diffusion coefficient and an increase in feasibility for “controlled utilization” of the S/S-treated soils.

Occupational exposure to low-level ionizing radiation (<1 Gy) was shown to enhance cell protection via attenuating an established inflammatory process. Nicotine, a major toxic component of cigarette smoke, is responsible for smoking-mediated renal dysfunction. The present study was therefore aimed to investigate the protective impact of ginger Zingiber officinale selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) with whole-body low-dose gamma radiation (γ-R) against nicotine-induced nephrotoxicity in male albino rats. Nicotine intoxication was induced with 0.5 mg/kg BW. Rats received 0.1 mg SeNPs/kg BW by gastric gavage concomitant with 0.5 Gy γ-R over 4 weeks. Characterization studies showed the formation of spherical SeNPs with a size ranged from 10 to 30 nm in diameter with a thin film encapsulating the nanoballs. Our data revealed that nicotine induced renal dysfunction manifested by significant abnormal levels of kidney function markers (creatinine, urea, sodium and potassium) accompanied by increased levels of malondialdehyde along with a reduction in glutathione level, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione S-transferase activities. It is worthy to note that nicotine toxicity induced significant increments in serum inflammatory markers: tumor necrosis factor-α and vascular cell adhesion protein 1. Western blotting showed marked significant elevation in caspase-3 activities against nicotine. The mRNA gene expression of inducible cyclooxygenase-2 gene was highly increased with nicotine intoxication while that of cyclooxygenase-1 did not show any changes. Interestingly, our data demonstrated that SeNPs in synergistic interaction with γ-R are efficacious control against nicotine-induced nephrotoxicity via anti-oxidant-mediated anti-inflammatory activities. Thus, it is tempting to recommend dietary approaches with ginger SeNPs for smokers at workplaces exposed occupationally and regularly to low-level ionizing radiation.

Novel iron encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) supported on porous carbon (Fe@N-C) 3D structured materials for degrading organic pollutants were fabricated from a renewable, low-cost biomass, melamine, and iron salt as the precursors. SEM and TEM micrographs show that iron encapsulated bamboo shaped CNTs are vertically standing on carbon sheets, and thus, a 3D hybrid was formed. The catalytic activities of the prepared samples were thoroughly evaluated by activation of peroxymonosulfate for catalytic oxidation of Orange II solutions. The influences of some reaction conditions (pH, temperature, and concentrations of reactants, peroxymonosulfate, and dye) were extensively evaluated. It was revealed that the adsorption could enrich the pollutant which was then rapidly degraded by the catalytically generated radicals, accelerating the continuous adsorption of residual pollutant. Remarkable carbon structure, introduction of CNTs, and N/Fe doping result in promoted adsorption capability and catalytic performances. Due to the simple synthetic process and cheap carbon precursor, Fe@N-C 3D hybrid can be easily scaled up and promote the development of Fenton-like catalysts.

It is believed that nanoemulsions were emerged as a promising candidate to improve the qualities of natural essential oil towards antimicrobial and insecticidal applications. In the present study, we have focused on the encapsulation of Vitex negundo L. leaf essential oil using Polysorbate80 for its different biological activities including antioxidant, bactericidal and larvicidal activity against dengue fever vector Aedes aegypti L. Initially, the nanoemulsion was prepared by low energy method and droplet size of the formulated nanoemulsion was characterized by using Dynamic Light Scattering analysis. The freshly prepared V. negundo essential nanoemulsion was observed with the mean droplet size of below 200 nm indicating its excellent stability. Further, the larvicidal activity of essential oil and nanoemulsion with various concentrations (25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 ppm). The larvicidal activities were tested 2nd and 3rd instar larval mortality rate that was observed against the 12 and 24 h exposure period. After a 12 h exposure period, the larvicidal activities of 2nd instar larva were observed as essential oil (73.33 ± 1.88), nanoemulsion (81.00 ± 0.88) and the larvicidal activities of 3rd instar larva were displayed essential oil (70.33 ± 2.60) and nanoemulsion (79.00 ± 3.70). Likewise, after a 24 h exposure period, the larvicidal activities of 2nd instar larva were observed as essential oil (90.30 ± 2.15), nanoemulsion (94.33 ± 1.20) and the larvicidal activities of 3rd instar larva were essential oil (80.66 ± 0.66) and nanoemulsion (93.00 ± 1.25) respectively. We finally concluded that the developed plant-based emulsion essential oil systems were thermodynamically stable. Owing to its improved bioavailability and biocompatibility, formulated nanoemulsion can be used in various biomedical applications including drug delivery as well as disease transmitting mosquito vector control. Peroxidases (EC 1.11.1.7) have enormous biotechnological applications. Usage of more abundant, basic isoforms of peroxidases in diagnostic kits and/or in immunochemistry has led to under exploitation and disregard of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) acidic isoforms. Therefore, acidic horseradish peroxidase (HRP-A) isoenzyme was used for the preparation of a biocatalyst with improved ability in dye decolorization. Ten biocatalysts were prepared by covalent binding of enzyme to chitosan and alginate, adsorption followed by cross-linking on inorganic support (aluminum oxide), and encapsulation in spherical calcium alginate beads via polyethylene glycol. Model dyes of 50 to 175 mg l⁻¹ were removed by the biocatalysts. Among the tested biocatalysts, the three with the highest specific activity and biodegradation rate were further studied (Chitosan-HRP, Al-Gel-HRP and Al-HRP-Gel). The impact of hydrogen peroxide concentration on dye decolorization was examined on the Chitosan-HRP biocatalyst, since the HRP is susceptible to inhibition/inactivation by high H₂O₂. On the other hand, H₂O₂ is needed as a co-substrate for the HRP, and the H₂O₂/dye ratio can greatly influence decolorization efficiency. Concentrations of H₂O₂ ranging from 0.22 to 4.4 mM showed no difference in terms of impact on the biocatalyst decolorization efficiency. The high decolorization efficiency of the biocatalysts was validated by the removal of 25 and 100 mg l⁻¹ anthraquinone (Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR)), triphenylmethane (Coomassie Brilliant Blue (CBB)), acridine (Acridine Orange (AO)), and formazan metal complex dye (Reactive Blue 52 (RB52)). After the seven consecutive decolorization cycles, the decolorization was still 53, 78, and 67% of the initial dye for the Al-HRP-Gel, Al-Gel-HRP, and Chitosan-HRP immobilizate, respectively. The results obtained showed potential of otherwise neglected acidic HRP isoforms as a cost-effective biocatalyst with significant potential in wastewater dyestuff treatment.
