Advances of air pollution science: From forest decline to multiple-stress effects on forest ecosystem services

Over the past 20 years, the focus of forest science on air pollution has moved from forest decline to a holistic framework of forest health, and from the effects on forest production to the ecosystem services provided by forest ecosystems. Hence, future research should focus on the interacting factorial impacts and resulting antagonistic and synergistic responses of forest trees and ecosystems. The synergistic effects of air pollution and climatic changes, in particular elevated ozone, altered nitrogen, carbon and water availability, must be key issues for research. Present evidence suggests air pollution will become increasingly harmful to forests under climate change, which requires integration amongst various stressors (abiotic and biotic factors, including competition, parasites and fire), effects on forest services (production, biodiversity protection, soil protection, sustained water balance, socio-economical relevance) and assessment approaches (research, monitoring, modeling) to be fostered. Interactions between air pollution and climate change effects on forest services demand long-term research approaches that integrate multi-factorial field experiments, monitoring and modeling.

Increasing research is highlighting the fact that streams provide crucial ecosystem services through the biogeochemical and ecological processes they sustain. Freshwater land-based salmonid farms commonly discharge their effluents into low order, headwater streams, partly due to the fact that adequate freshwater resources for production are commonly found in undisturbed areas. We review the effects of salmonid farm effluents on different biological components of stream ecosystems. Relevant considerations related to the temporal and spatial scales of effluent discharge and ecological effects are discussed. These highlight the need to characterize the patterns of stressor discharge when assessing environmental impacts and designing ecological effects studies. The potential role of multiple stressors in disrupting ecosystem structure and function is discussed with an emphasis on aquaculture veterinary medicines. Further research on the effects of veterinary medicines using relevant exposure scenarios would significantly contribute to our understanding of their impact in relation to other effluent stressors.

Actually, there is a growing interest in finding efficient low-cost materials that allow the removal of chemical substances from water in order to decrease the environmental impact. The use of nanoscale systems is a new area of investigation for the elimination of polluting agents from water among other useful applications in science and technology. In this work, removal of indigo blue in water solutions has been evaluated using Fe/Cu nanoparticles and composites of C/Fe–Cu nanoalloy. The first composite was using carbon obtained by pyrolysis of sewage sludge with Fe/Cu nanoparticles (MCL-NP); the second one was made with commercial activated carbon and Fe–Cu nanoparticles (CAC-NP). Synthesis of materials were carried out by the sodium borohydride reduction of FeSO4[Symbol: see text]7H2O and CuSO4[Symbol: see text]5H2O aqueous mixture. Batch adsorption and isotherm experiments were carried out in order to know the behavior of each adsorbent material employed. The experimental data were adjusted to Langmuir, Freundlich, and BET models.

Traditionally, the Guadiamar River (Seville, Southwest Spain) has received pollution from two different sources, in its upper section, from a pyrite exploitation (Los Frailes mine) and, in its lower section, from untreated urban and industrial wastes and from intensive agricultural activities. In 1998, the accidental spillage of about 6 million m3 of acid water and sludge from mine tailings to Guadiamar River worsened the pollution of an already contaminated area. The main polluting agents of the spillage were heavy metals. The total concentration of a metal provides scarce information about the effects on environmental processes or about the toxicity of the sediment samples. A more sophisticated fractionation of the sediment samples based on a species distribution can help to understand the behaviour and fate of the metals. This article describes a distribution study of the metals Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn by fractionation analysis of sediments from eleven sample sites alongside the Guadiamar Riverbed. The samples were collected in summer 2002, four years after the spillage and after the area had been cleaned. Sequential extraction analysis resulted in the definition of four fraction categories: exchangeable metal (the most available fraction), reducible metal (bound to hydrous oxides of Fe and Mn), oxidizable metal (bound to organic matter and sulphides) and a residual fraction (bound to minerals). Significant increases in the available fraction of several potentially toxic metal ions like Cd, Mn and Zn were found. The distribution pattern was variable along the River. At the site closest to the mineworks, the soluble forms of Cd, Mn and Zn were significantly more abundant that those downstream. Cu and Pb were present in the reducible fraction while Fe was present associated in the residual fraction.

Linear anionic polyacrylamide (LA-PAM) is being considered as a soil amendment to reduce seepage and infiltration in unlined earthen canals. While polyacrylamides have been extensively used for potable water treatment, dewatering sewage sludge, coal and mine processing, paper manufacturing, and agriculture, little is known about its ecological impact to aquatic ecosystems. Acute toxicity (LC₅₀, 24 and 48 h) and chronic exposure tests (limited and continuous exposures) were conducted on Daphnia magna. In the chronic limited exposure experiments, Daphnia were exposed to LA-PAM for only 24 h whereas for the chronic continuous exposure the concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1, 5, 10, and 100 mg/L were tested and the endpoints of growth, onset to reproduction, fecundity, and mortality were measured for the duration of 32 days. There was no significant difference among the chronic, limitedly exposed organisms. The acute toxicity for LA-PAM was measured at 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 mg/L. The acute test showed that the LC₅₀ for LA-PAM was at 152 mg/L. Overall in the chronic, continuous exposure test, D. magna was negatively impacted by LA-PAM at levels as low as 1 mg/L. Growth was reduced by 37% and 89% at 1 and 100 mg/L, respectively. Fecundity and onset to reproduction was impaired at 10 and 100 mg/L. Kinematic viscosity ranged from 0.98 cSt at 1 mg/L to 2.9 at 100 mg/L. At these levels, mechanical and physiological impairments due to the viscous properties of LA-PAM are the proposed mechanisms of reduction in the life history traits of D. magna.

Background, aim and scope Pulp and paper mills generate a plethora of pollutants depending upon the type of pulping process. Efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of such effluents have been made by developing more effective biological treatment systems in terms of biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, colour and lignin content. This study is the first that reports an evaluation of the effects of a tertiary treatment by fungi (Pleurotus sajor caju, Trametes versicolor and Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Rhizopus oryzae) on individual organic compounds of a Eucalyptus globulus bleached kraft pulp and paper mill final effluent after secondary treatment (final effluent). Material and methods The tertiary treatment with P. sajor caju, T. versicolor and P. chrysosporium and R. oryzae was performed in batch reactors, which were inoculated with separate fungi species and monitored throughout the incubation period. Samples from effluent after secondary and after tertiary treatment with fungi were analysed for both absorbance and organic compounds. The samples were extracted for organic compounds using solid-phase extraction (SPE) and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The efficiencies of the SPE procedure was evaluated by recovery tests. Results A total of 38 compounds (carboxylic acids, fatty alcohols, phenolic compounds and sterols) were identified and quantified in the E. globulus bleached kraft pulp mill final effluent after secondary treatment. Recoveries from the extraction procedure were between 98.2% and 99.9%. The four fungi species showed an adequate capacity to remove organic compounds and colour. Tertiary treatment with R. oryzae was able to remove 99% of organic compounds and to reduce absorbance on 47% (270 nm) and 74% (465 nm). P. sajor caju, T. versicolor and P. chrysosporium were able to remove 97%, 92% and 99% of organic compounds, respectively, and reduce 18% (270 nm) to 77% (465 nm), 39% (270 nm) to 58% (465 nm) and 31% (270 nm) to 10% (465 nm) of absorbance, respectively. Discussion The wide variety of organic compounds found in the final effluent must be due to the degradation of E. globulus wood in pulp and paper mill. The concentrations of organic compounds in the final effluent of E. globulus bleached kraft pulp mill were in residual levels maybe due to the secondary treatment. The recovery tests showed the effectiveness of the extraction procedure, and no losses of analyte were suspected in the analytical determinations. Lignin derivatives such as vanilic acid, syringic acid, guaiacol, syringol and phloroglucinol were totally removed by R. oryzae, but the 47% absorbance reduction obtained at 270 nm suggests that these species were not able to complete degradation of lignin macromolecular compounds. Conclusions The organic compounds (carboxylic acids, fatty alcohols, phenolic compounds and sterols) were removed more efficiently by tertiary treatment with R. oryzae or P. chrysosporium, followed by P. sajor caju and T. versicolor. Regarding the removal of both colour and organic compounds, the tertiary treatment with R. oryzae was the most efficient. Recommendations and perspectives In order to reduce the deleterious impacts of paper mill effluents, efforts have been made to develop more effective advanced tertiary treatments. This study may serve as a basis of characterisation, in terms of organic compounds of E. globulus bleached kraft pulp mill final effluent after secondary treatment and as an effort to understand the effects of tertiary treatments with fungi on low concentrations of organic compounds from biological secondary treatment.

Oil spill leaves detrimental effects to environment, living organisms, and economy. As such, it is of considerable interest to find an effective, simple, and inexpensive method to treat this calamity. This work reports the use of banana trunk fibers (BTF) modified with oleic acid, stearic acid, castor oil, and palm oil for oil spill recovery. The maximum sorption capacity, effect of oil to water ratio, effect of light oil fractions, and effect of dissolved organic compounds in weathered oil-contaminated seawater were studied. It is found that BTF treated with oleic acid exhibited the best sorption capacity for engine oil, dissolved organic compounds in weathered oil, and light oil fractions. The equilibrium process was described well by the Freundlich isotherm model, and the kinetic studies show good correlation coefficients for a pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Nonpoint source pollution management initiated by the Ministry of Environment (MOE) in Korea resulted to the construction of 25 pilot facilities termed Best Management Practices (BMPs) until 2005. The national nonpoint sources control projects were employed to fulfill the Total Maximum Daily Load programs. The long-term monitoring being conducted at the sites which began in 2006 is providing detailed insight into the performance of the BMPs. The experience and performance data will be used to better understand and implement similar structural BMPs in the future as well as to assist the MOE in developing the design and maintenance guidelines of BMPs. This study presents the results gathered from the monitoring field tests and experiments over 22 rainfall events between the June 2006 and September 2008 period investigating the pollutant removal efficiency of the infiltration trench BMP that is one of the 25 pilot projects of the MOE. In addition, it includes the development of simple linear regression models to estimate constituent event mean concentration. The results reveal high treatment efficiencies for total suspended solids (89%); biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, and dissolved organic carbon (89-93%); oil and grease (100%); cadmium, lead, and zinc (89-93%); total nitrogen (84%); and total phosphorus (82%). The monitoring data and results will represent a step forward to a better prediction of impacts in the environment and to the national development of BMPs for sustainable watershed management in the country.

Background, aim and scope Landfill gas (LFG) tends to escape from the landfill surface even when LFG collecting systems are installed. Since LFG leaks are generally a noticeable percentage of the total production of LFG, the optimisation of the collection system is a fundamental step for both energy recovery and environmental impact mitigation. In this work, we suggest to take into account the results of direct measurements of gas fluxes at the air-cover interface to achieve this goal. Materials and methods During the last 5 years (2004-2009), 11 soil gas emission surveys have been carried out at the Municipal Solid Waste landfill of Legoli (Peccioli municipality, Pisa Province, Italy) by means of the accumulation chamber method. Direct and simultaneous measurements of CH₄ and CO₂ fluxes from the landfill cover (about 140,000 m²) have been performed to estimate the total output of both gases discharged into the atmosphere. Three different data processing have been applied and compared: Arithmetic mean of raw data (AMRD), sequential Gaussian conditional simulations (SGCS) and turning bands conditional simulations (TBCS). The total amount of LFG (captured and not captured) obtained from processing of direct measurements has been compared with the corresponding outcomes of three different numerical models (LandGEM, IPCC waste model and GasSim). Results Measured fluxes vary from undetectable values (<0.05 mol m⁻² day⁻¹ for CH₄ and <0.02 mol m⁻² day⁻¹ for CO₂) to 246 mol m⁻² day⁻¹ for CH₄ and 275 mol m⁻² day⁻¹ for CO₂. The specific CH₄ and CO₂ fluxes (flux per surface unit) vary from 1.8 to 7.9 mol m⁻² day⁻¹ and from 2.4 to 7.8 mol m⁻² day⁻¹, respectively. Discussion The three different estimation methodologies (AMRD, SGCS and TBCS) used to evaluate the total output of diffused CO₂ and CH₄ fluxes from soil provide similar estimations, whereas there are some mismatches between these results and those of numerical LFG production models. Isoflux maps show a non-uniform spatial distribution, with high-flux zones not always corresponding with high-temperature areas shown by thermographic images. Conclusions The average value estimated over the 5-year period for the Legoli landfill is 245 mol min⁻¹ for CH₄ and 379 mol min⁻¹ for CO₂, whereas the volume percentage of CH₄ in the total gas discharged into the atmosphere varies from 29% to 51%, with a mean value of 39%. The estimated yearly emissions from the landfill cover is about 1.29 × 10⁸ mol annum⁻¹ (2,100 t year⁻¹) of CH₄ and 1.99 × 10⁸ mol annum⁻¹ (8,800 t year⁻¹) of CO₂. Considering that the CH₄ global warming potential is 63 times greater than that of CO₂ (20 a time horizon, Lashof and Ahuja 1990), the emission of methane corresponds to 130,000 t annum⁻¹ of CO₂. Recommendations and perspectives The importance of these studies is to provide data for the worldwide inventory of CH₄ and CO₂ emissions from landfills, with the ultimate aim of determining the contribution of waste disposal to global warming. This kind of studies could be extended to other gas species, like the volatile organic compounds.

Background, aim, and scope Acrylate and methacrylate esters are α,β-unsaturated esters that contain vinyl groups directly attached to the carbonyl carbon (CH₂=CHCOO- and CH₂=CCH₃COO-, respectively) and are widely used in the polymer plastic and resin production. Rate coefficients for Cl reactions for most of the unsaturated esters have not been previously determined, and a good understanding is needed of all the atmospheric oxidation processes of these compounds in order to determine lifetimes in the atmosphere and to evaluate the impact of these reactions on the formation of photo-oxidants and therefore on health and environment. Materials and methods The relative rate technique has been used to obtain rate coefficients for the reactions between the Cl atom and a series of unsaturated esters. The experiments have been carried out in a static Teflon reactor at room temperature and atmospheric pressure (N₂ as bath gas) using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection as detection system. Results The following rate coefficients are obtained (in cubic meter per molecule per second): methyl acrylate + Cl = 1.71 ± 0.13 × 10⁻¹⁰; methyl methacrylate + Cl = 2.30 ± 0.18 × 10⁻¹⁰; ethyl acrylate + Cl = 1.82 ± 0.13 × 10⁻¹⁰; ethyl methacrylate + Cl = 2.71 ± 0.21 × 10⁻¹⁰; butyl acrylate + Cl = 2.94 ± 0.23 × 10⁻¹⁰; butyl methacrylate + Cl = 3.83 ± 0.30 × 10⁻¹⁰; methyl 3-methyl acrylate + Cl = 2.21 ± 0.17 × 10⁻¹⁰; and methyl 3,3-dimethyl acrylate + Cl = 3.58 ± 0.28 × 10⁻¹⁰. Discussion Rate coefficients calculated for Cl reactions are around one order of magnitude higher than OH ones. The effect in the reactivity of increased substitution at the carbon-carbon double bond is analyzed and also the effect of the identity of the alkyl group R in the -C(O)OR. Atmospheric lifetimes of the compounds against the attack by the major oxidants are estimated and the atmospheric implications are discussed. Conclusions The dominant atmospheric loss process for acrylate esters is clearly their daytime reaction with the hydroxyl radical. However, in coastal areas and in the marine boundary layer and in some industrial zones, Cl-atom-initiated degradation of the unsaturated esters considered here can be a significant if not dominant homogeneous loss process. Recommendations and perspectives Product analysis should be necessary in order to evaluate the real environmental impact of these reactions. OH and ozone reactions of most of the considered compounds have already been studied and products determined, but kinetic and products information for NO₃ radical reactions is especially scarce.
