Anaerobic reductive treatment technologies offer cost-effective and large-scale treatment of chlorinated compounds, including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs). The information about the degradation rates of these compounds in natural settings is critical but difficult to obtain because of slow degradation processes. Establishing a relationship between biotransformation rate and abundance of biomarkers is one of the most critical challenges faced by the bioremediation industry. When solved for a given contaminant, it may result in significant cost savings because of serving as a basis for action. In the current review, we have summarized the studies highlighting the use of biomarkers, particularly DNA and RNA, as a proxy for reductive dechlorination of chlorinated ethenes. As the use of biomarkers for predicting biotransformation rates has not yet been executed for PCDD/Fs, we propose the extension of the same knowledge for dioxins, where slow degradation rates further necessitate the need for developing the biomarker-rate relationship. For this, we have first retrieved and calculated the bioremediation rates of different PCDD/Fs and then highlighted the key sequences that can be used as potential biomarkers. We have also discussed the implications and hurdles in developing such a relationship. Improvements in current techniques and collaboration with some other fields, such as biokinetic modeling, can improve the predictive capability of the biomarkers so that they can be used for effectively predicting biotransformation rates of dioxins and related compounds. In the future, a valid and established relationship between biomarkers and biotransformation rates of dioxin may result in significant cost savings, whilst also serving as a basis for action.

The study addresses the topic of suitable matrices for chemical analysis in fish monitoring and discusses the effects of data normalization in the context of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). Differences between species are considered by comparing three frequently monitored species of different trophic levels, i.e., chub (Squalius cephalus, n = 28), (bream, Abramis brama, n = 11), and perch (Perca fluviatilis, n = 19) sampled in the German Danube. The WFD priority substances dioxins, furans and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCDD/F + dl-PCB), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), α-hexabromocyclododecane (α-HBCDD), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), mercury (Hg), and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) as well as non-dioxin-like (ndl)-PCB were analyzed separately in fillet and carcass and whole body concentrations were calculated. Hg was analyzed in individual fish fillets and carcasses, all other substances were determined in pool samples, which were compiled on the basis of fish size (3 chub pools, 1 bream pool, 2 perch pools). The data were normalized to 5% lipid weight (or 26% dry mass in the case of Hg and PFOS) for comparison between matrices and species.Hg concentrations were generally higher in fillet than in whole fish (mean whole fish-to-fillet ratio: 0.7) whereas all other substances were mostly higher in whole fish. In the case of lipophilic substances these differences leveled after lipid normalization.Significant correlations (p ≤ .05) were detected between Hg and fish weight and age. Hg concentrations varied least among younger fish. PCDD/F, dl-PCB, ndl-PCB, PBDE, α-HBCDD and HCB correlated significantly (p ≤ .05) with lipid concentrations. Fillet-to-whole fish conversion equations and/or conversion factors were derived for all substances except α-HCBDD. Although more data also for individual fish would be desirable the results are nevertheless a step on the way to translate fillet concentrations of priority substances to whole fish concentrations.

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDDs) and hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) can be formed from bromophenols (BPs) by thermal degradation, biosynthesis or phototransformation. However, it is unknown whether PBDDs and OH-PBDEs can be formed during the chemical production processes that utilize BPs as raw materials. 2,4,6-tribromophenol (2,4,6-TBP) is an important raw material for the synthesis of 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE), a novel brominated flame retardant. In this study, PBDDs, polybrominated dibenzofurans (PBDFs) and OH-PBDEs have been identified and quantified in commercially available BTBPE and 2,4,6-TBP. Furthermore, their formation as unintentional by-products during the laboratory synthesis of BTBPE from 2,4,6-TBP and 1,2-dibromoethane in the presence of sodium carbonate has also been investigated. 2,3,7,8-substituted PBDDs and PBDFs (2,3,7,8-PBDD/Fs) were undetectable in commercial samples of BTBPE and present in low levels (nanogram per gram) in 2,4,6-TBP. Two tetrabrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (TeBDDs), namely 1,3,6,8- and 1,3,7,9-TeBDD, and three hydroxylated pentabrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-pentaBDEs), namely 4′-OH-BDE121, 2′-OH-BDE121, and 6′-OH-BDE100, were identified or tentatively identified, and quantitatively estimated to be at concentrations in the range of undetectable to several thousands of nanograms per gram in commercial BTBPE and 2,4,6-TBP. TeBDDs and OH-pentaBDEs were formed as by-products from 2,4,6-TBP during BTBPE synthesis. Further studies need to be conducted in order to determine whether PBDD/Fs and OH-PBDEs are also formed during the industrial synthesis of other chemical compounds that utilize BPs as raw materials or intermediates.

The rapid growth of the production of electrical and electronic products has meant an equally rapid growth in the amount of electronic waste (e-waste), much of which is illegally imported to India, for disposal presenting a serious environmental challenge. The environmental impact during e-waste recycling was investigated and metal as well as other pollutants [e.g. polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)] were found in excessive levels in soil, water and other habitats. The most e-waste is dealt with as general or crudely often by open burning, acid baths, with recovery of only a few materials of value. As resulted of these process; dioxins, furans, and heavy metals are released and harmful to the surrounding environment, engaged workers, and also residents inhabiting near the sites. The informal e-waste sectors are growing rapidly in the developing countries over than in the developed countries because of cheapest labor cost and week legislations systems. It has been confirmed that contaminates are moving through the food chain via root plant translocation system, to the human body thereby threatening human health. We have suggested some possible solution toward in which plants and microbes combine to remediate highly contaminated sites.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is the most widely used brominated flame retardant worldwide. A detailed examination of the degradation products emitted during thermal decomposition of TBBPA is presented in the study. Runs were performed in a laboratory furnace at different temperatures (650 and 800 °C) and in different atmospheres (nitrogen and air). More than one hundred semivolatile compounds have been identified by GC/MS, with special interest in brominated ones. Presence of HBr and brominated light hydrocarbons increased with temperature and in the presence of oxygen. Maximum formation of PAHs is observed at pyrolytic condition at the higher temperature. High levels of 2,4-, 2,6- and 2,4,6- bromophenols were found. The levels of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans have been detected in the ppm range. The most abundant isomers are 2,4,6,8-TeBDF in pyrolysis and 1,2,3,7,8-PeBDF in combustion. These results should be considered in the assessment of thermal treatment of materials containing brominated flame retardants.

During the last decades, awareness regarding persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), has become a cutting-edge topic, due to their toxicity, bioaccumulation and persistency in the environment. Monitoring of PCDD/Fs and PAHs in air and water has proven to be insufficient to capture deposition and effects of these compounds in the biota. To overcome this limitation, environmental biomonitoring using lichens and aquatic mosses, have aroused as promising tools. The main aim of this work is to provide a review of: i) factors that influence the interception and accumulation of POPs by lichens; ii) how lichens and aquatic bryophytes can be used to track different pollution sources and; iii) how can these biomonitors contribute to environmental health studies. This review will allow designing a set of guidelines to be followed when using biomonitors to assess environmental POP pollution.

This paper describes the first report of dioxins and furans (PCDDs/Fs) in sediment cores from Mexico. Sedimentation rates and vertical fluxes were estimated using ²¹⁰Pb dating. Two cores correspond to marine sediments and one to an endorheic lake. Concentrations of PCDDs/Fs found in the three sites are typical of non-impacted areas with low concentrations when compared to reference values. However the PCDDs/Fs sediment profiles show an increasing concentration trend in the upper core sections. This behavior is different from that found at many sites around the globe where diminishing concentrations have been reported. A strong predominance of OCDD was observed, and a comparison to typical composition profiles of industrial and other sources did not result in clear origin assignments for these measured compounds. We suggest that local sources may be responsible for the increase in concentration and, because these undetermined sources have not been curtailed, their importance is still growing.

Since the discovery of fullerenes in 1985, these carbon nanospheres have attracted attention regarding their physico/chemical properties. Despite little knowledge about their impact on the environment and human health, the production of fullerenes has already reached an industrial scale. However, the toxicity of C60 is still controversially discussed. The aim of this study was to clarify the biological effects of tetrahydrofuran (THF) suspended C60 fullerene in comparison to water stirred C60 fullerene suspensions. Beyond that, we analyzed the effects on the Crustacea Daphnia magna an indicator for ecotoxicological effects and the human lung epithelial cell line A549 as a simplified model for the respiratory tract. We could demonstrate that water-soluble side products which were formed in THF nC60 suspension were responsible for the observed acute toxic effects, whereas fullerenes themselves had no negative effect regardless of the preparative route on either A549 cell in vitro or D. magna in vivo. THF suspended nC60 did not show any toxic effect to Daphnia and lung cells when side products were eliminated by additional washing steps.

Although biomass fuel has always been regarded as a source of sustainable energy, it potentially emits polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). This study investigated PCDD/F emissions from industrial boilers fired with three types of biomass fuel (i.e., bagasse, coffee residue, and biomass pellets) via stack sampling and laboratory analysis. The measured mass concentrations of PCDD/Fs varied among the boilers from 0.0491 to 12.7 ng Nm⁻³ (11% O₂), with the calculated average international toxic equivalent quantity (I-TEQ) from 0.00195 to 1.71 ng I-TEQ Nm⁻³ (11% O₂). Some of them were beyond the limit value for municipal waste incineration. 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF could be used as a good indicator of dioxin-induced toxicity of stack flue gases from biomass-fired boilers. The PCDFs/PCDDs ratios were more than 1, likely indicating the formation of dioxins in the boilers favored by de novo synthesis. The emission factor (EF) of total PCDD/Fs averaged 5.35 ng I-TEQ kg⁻¹ air-dry biomass (equivalent to 39.0 ng kg⁻¹ air-dry biomass). Specifically, the mean EF was 6.94 ng I-TEQ kg⁻¹ (52.6 ng kg⁻¹) for biomass-pellet-fired boiler, 11.8 ng I-TEQ kg⁻¹ (74.6 ng kg⁻¹) for coffee-residue -fired boiler, and 0.0277 ng I-TEQ kg⁻¹ (0.489 ng kg⁻¹) for bagasse-fired boilers. The annual PCDD/F emission was estimated to be 208 g I-TEQ in 2020 in China, accounting for approximately 2% of the total national annual emission of PCDD/Fs. The results can be used to develop PCDD/Fs emission inventories and offer valuable insights to authorities regarding utilizing biomass in industry in the future.
