The present study investigates the influence of individual and combined hydrogen peroxide and thermal pre-treatment of waste activated sludge on anaerobic digestion. For so doing, it employs anaerobic batch reactors in the mesophilic conditions. For comparison, soluble fractions of organic matter, biogas production, biochemical methane potential, removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), and volatile solids (VS) have been measured during the anaerobic digestion process in systems with and without pre-treatment. Hydrogen peroxide pre-treatment has been tested in two concentrations of 30 g H2O2/kg VS and 60 g H2O2/kg VS and thermal pre-treatment has been performed at two temperatures of 75℃ and 90℃. According to the results, the solubalisation of organic matter considerably improves, when combined hydrogen peroxide and thermal pre-treatment is employed. As a result, in comparison to the control reactor, higher amounts of biogas (71%) and methane (81%) have been produced in the bioreactor, pre-treated with combined hydrogen peroxide (30 g H2O2/kg VS) and heat (90 ℃). In addition, the removal efficiency of COD and VS from the digested sludge has been enhanced in the pre-treated reactors (up to 39% and 92%, respectively) in comparison to the control reactor. The improved methane yield, COD, and VS are of paramount importance, not only because higher amounts of renewable energy are obtained from the anaerobic digestion process, but because sludge transport costs are reduced and the digested sludge obtains a higher potential application to agricultural lands.

Batch sorption of metformin hydrochloride (MET) onto a specially designed biochar mix consisting of both macro (MAC) and micro (MIC) algae, rice husk and pine sawdust was conducted. Pyrolysis of both MAC and MIC algae mixture was done followed by chemical activation with hydrogen-peroxide. Additionally, sorption of MET under the influence of pH was separately investigated. Batch studies of isotherms were well described by Freundlich model with high non-linearity and Freundlich exponent values ranged anywhere from 0.12 to 1.54. Heterogeneity of MET adsorption to the bonding sites was attributed to the surface functional groups of the modified biochar. Amongst the four biochars, the activated macroalgae biochar (MACAC) and microalgae biochar (MICAC) depicted favourable adsorption of MET with maximum adsorption at pH 7. Up to 76% of MET removal from the environment was obatained using the MACAC biochar. Scanning electron micrographs coupled with energy dispersive X-ray, as well as elemental analyses confirmed formation of oxygen containing surface functional groups due to activation strengthening chemisorption as the main sorption mechanism. Further, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy and other surface functional group analyses along with Zeta potential measurements reinforced our proposed sorption mechanism. Lowest zeta potential observed at pH 7 enhanced the electrostatic force of attraction for both the biochars. Negative zeta potential value of the biochars under different pH indicated potential of the biochars to adsorb other positively charged contaminants. From a techno-economic perspective, capital expenditure cost is not readily available, however, it is envisaged that production of pyrolyzed biochar from algal biomass could make the process economically attractive especially when the biochar could be utilised for high-end applications.

To examine the potential role of acetate in conferring cadmium (Cd) stress tolerance in lentil (Lens culinaris), several phenotypical and physio-biochemical properties have been examined in Cd-stressed lentil seedlings following acetate applications. Acetate treatment inhibited the translocation of Cd from roots to shoots, which resulted in a minimal reduction in photosynthetic pigment contents. Additionally, acetate-treated lentil showed higher shoot (1.1 and 11.72%) and root (4.98 and 30.64%) dry weights compared with acetate-non-treated plants under low-Cd and high-Cd concentrations, respectively. Concurrently, acetate treatments increase osmoprotection under low-Cd stress through proline accumulation (24.69%), as well as enhancement of antioxidant defense by increasing ascorbic acid content (239.13%) and catalase activity (148.51%) under high-Cd stress. Acetate-induced antioxidant defense resulted in a significant diminution in hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde and electrolyte leakage in Cd-stressed lentil seedlings. Our results indicated that acetate application mitigated oxidative stress-induced damage by modulating antioxidant defense and osmoprotection, and reducing root-to-shoot Cd transport. These findings indicate an important contribution of acetate in mitigating the Cd toxicity during growth and development of lentil seedlings, and suggest that the exogenous applications of acetate could be an economical and new avenue for controlling heavy metal-caused damage in lentil, and potentially in many other crops.

The narrow acid pH range and the nonselectivity of the dominant •OH limit the Fenton systems to remediate the organic wastewater. Inspired by the role of heme in physiological processes, we employed iron porphyrin as a novel homogeneous catalyst to address this issue. Multiple active species are identified during the activation of H₂O₂, including high-valent iron porphyrin ((por)Fe(IV)) species ((por)Fe(IV)–OH, (por)⁺•Fe(IV)=O) and oxygen-centered radicals (•OH, HO₂•/•O₂⁻), as well as atomic hydrogen (*H) and carbon-centered radicals. With the cooperation of these active species, the degradation of pollutants could be resistant to the interference of concomitant ions and proceed over a wide pH range. This cooperative behavior is further verified by intermediates identified from bisphenol A degradation. Specifically, the presence of *H could facilitate the cleavage of the C–C bond and the addition of unsaturated or aromatic molecules. (Por)⁺•Fe(IV)=O could hydroxylate substrates with an oxygen rebound mechanism. Hydrogen atom abstraction of contaminants could be performed by (por)Fe(IV)–OH to form desaturated products by attacking oxygen-centered radicals. The ecotoxicity of bisphenol A could be significantly decreased through degradation. This study would provide a new approach to wastewater treatment and shed light on the interaction between metalloporphyrin and peroxide in an aqueous solution.

Microplastics, an emerging pollutant in the environment, have attracted extensive attention in recent years for their possible negative impact on organisms. However, direct and indirect effects of polystyrene (PS) microplastics on vegetables are still not completely known. In this study, we used red lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. Red Sails) in a hydroponic system to investigate the effects of nano- and micro-sized PS and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) on the photosynthesis and red lettuce quality. The results clearly indicated that PS reduced the bioavailability of DBP while causing a decrease in the photosynthetic parameters as well as the total chorophyll content compared to DBP alone by affecting the crystalline structure of the water-soluble chlorophyll protein. Compared with DBP monotherapy, the presence of PS significantly increased hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde content in the lettuce treated with DBP, indicating serious oxidative damage. Furthermore, the soluble protein and sugar content in lettuce leaves decreased with higher PS concentration and smaller PS size. It may be due to PS inhibited lettuce root and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activities. In contrast, nitrite content increased significantly with the induction of the glutathione-ascorbic acid cycle, indicating that the presence of PS reduced the quality of DBP-treated-red lettuce. Additionally, the nano-sized PS greatly inhibited lettuce growth and quality more than the micro-sized PS. This study described the interactions between microplastics and phthalates using molecular simulation and experimental validation to highlight the potential risks of microplastics on vegetable crop production.

An emerging stress of pesticides in plant and soil is closely watched as it affects crop antioxidant systems, nutritional quality, and flavor. Although selenium (Se) can enhance the resistance of plants, the protective mechanism of nanoselenium is still not known under the long-term pesticide stress in tea trees. In this study, we investigated the potential effects of foliar application of nanoselenium for a two-year field experiment on tea plants under pesticide-induced oxidative stress. Compared to control, nano-Se (10 mg/L) markedly enhanced the protein, soluble sugar, carotenoid, tea polyphenols, and catechins contents. High levels of theanine, glutamic acid, proline, and arginine were found to be induced most likely by adjusting the GS-GOGAT cycle. Se-supplementation may promote tea leaves’ secondary metabolism, thus increasing the accumulation of total phenols and flavonoids (apigenin, kaempferol, quercetin, myricetin, and rutin). It also minimized the accumulation of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide anion by activating the antioxidants enzymes including in the AsA-GSH cycle. Selenium-rich tea also showed better fragrance and flavor. In summary, nano-Se can ameliorate the nutrients quality and abiotic stresses resistance of crops.

Arsenite [As(III)] toxicity causes impeded growth, inadequate productivity of plants and toxicity through the food chain. Using various chemical residues for priming is one of the approaches in conferring arsenic tolerance in crops. We investigated the mechanism of abscisic acid (ABA)-induced As(III) tolerance in rice genotypes (cv. Swarna and Swarna Sub1) pretreated with 10 μM of ABA for 24 h and transferred into 0, 25 and 50 μM arsenic for 10 days. Plants showed a dose-dependent bioaccumulation of As(III), oxidative stress indicators like superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and the activity of lipoxygenase. As(III) had disrupted cellular redox that reflecting growth indices like net assimilation rate, relative growth rate, specific leaf weight, leaf mass ratio, relative water content, proline, delta-1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase and electrolyte leakage. ABA priming was more protective in cv. Swarna Sub1 than Swarna for retrieval of total glutathione pool, non-protein thiols, cysteine, phytochelatin and glutathione reductase. Phosphate metabolisms were significantly curtailed irrespective of genotypes where ABA had moderated phosphate uptake and its metabolizing enzymes like acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and H⁺/ATPase. Rice seedlings had regulated antioxidative potential with the varied polymorphic expression of those enzymes markedly with antioxidative enzymes. The results have given the possible cellular and physiological traits those may interact with ABA priming in the establishment of plant tolerance with As(III) over accumulation and, thereby, its amelioration for oxidative damages. Finally, cv. Swarna Sub1 was identified as a rice genotype as a candidate for breeding program for sustainability against As(III) stress with cellular and physiological traits serving better for selection pressure.

Cadmium (Cd) is a harmful heavy metal that can cause many health problems, while selenium (Se) is an essential nutrient for organisms that can protect them from heavy metal-induced damage. To explore the effects of Se on Cd-induced mitophagy in the liver, forty 3-month-old New Zealand white rabbits (2–2.5 kg), half male and half female, were randomly divided into four groups: the Control group, the Se (0.5 mg/kg body weight (BW)) group, the Cd (1 mg/kg BW) group and the Se+Cd group. After 30 days, the toxicity from Cd in the liver was assessed in terms of the nuclear xenobiotic receptor (NXR) response, oxidative stress and mitophagy. It was found that Cd decreased the activities of CYP450 enzymes and antioxidant enzymes and increased the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and also increased the consumption of reduced glutathione (GSH). Moreover, the mRNA levels of NXRs (CAR, PXR, AHR and Nrf2), some mitochondrial function factors (PGC-1α, Sirt1, Sirt3, Nrf1 and TFAM) and mitochondrial fusion factors (Mfn1, Mfn2 and OPA1) were downregulated, but the mRNA levels of other mitochondrial function factors (VDAC1, Cyt C and PRDX3), mitochondrial fission factors (Fis1 and MFF) and those in the PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy pathway (p62, Bnip3 and LC3) were upregulated under Cd exposure. The protein expression levels of Nrf2, SOD2, PGC-1α, PINK1 and Parkin were consistent with the mRNA expression levels in the Cd group. Se alleviated the changes in the abovementioned factors induced by Cd. In conclusion, the results indicate that Cd can cause oxidative stress in rabbit livers by inhibiting NXRs and the antioxidation response leading to mitophagy, and these harmful changes caused by Cd can be alleviated by Se.

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), as a common disinfectant, has been extensively used in aquaculture. The toxicity of high ambient H₂O₂ for gills and liver of fish has received attention from many researchers. However, whether H₂O₂ exposure induced brain injury and neurotoxicity has not been reported in fish. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the potential mechanism of H₂O₂ toxicity in brain of common carp via transcriptome analysis and biochemical parameter detection. The fish were exposed to 0 (control) and 1 mM of H₂O₂ for 1 h per day lasting 14 days. The results showed that H₂O₂ exposure caused oxidative damage in brain evidenced by decreased glutathione (GSH), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD⁺) levels, and increased formation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG). Meanwhile, H₂O₂ exposure reduced 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) level, and down-regulated tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (tph1a), tph2, 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1A-beta (htr1ab) and htr2b expression in brain. Transcriptome analysis showed that H₂O₂ exposure up-regulated 604 genes and down-regulated 1209 genes in brain. Go enrichment displayed that the differently expressed genes (DEGs) were enriched mainly in cellular process, single-organism process, metabolic process, and biological regulation in the biological process category. Further, KEGG enrichment indicated that H₂O₂ exposure led to dysregulation of neurotransmitter signals including depression of glutamatergic synapse, GABAergic synapse and endocannabinoid signaling. Also, we found the alteration of three key pathways including calcium, cAMP and HIF-1 in brain after H₂O₂ exposure. In conclusion, our data indicated that H₂O₂ exposure induced oxidative damage and neurotoxicity, possibly related to dysregulation of neurotransmitters and calcium, cAMP and HIF-1 signaling pathways, which may adversely affect learning, memory and social responses of common carp. This study provided novel insight into biological effects and underlying mechanism of H₂O₂ toxicity in aquatic animal, and contributed to proper application of H₂O₂ in aquaculture.

During the current pandemic, chemical disinfectants are ubiquitously and routinely used in community environments, especially on common touch surfaces in public settings, as a means of controlling the virus spread. An underappreciated risk in current regulatory guidelines and scholarly discussions, however, is that the persisting input of chemical disinfectants can exacerbate the growth of biocide-tolerant and antibiotic-resistant bacteria on those surfaces and allow their direct transfers to humans. For COVID-19, the most commonly used disinfecting agents are quaternary ammonium compounds, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, and ethanol, which account for two-thirds of the active ingredients in current EPA-approved disinfectant products for the novel coronavirus. Tolerance to each of these compounds, which can be either intrinsic or acquired, has been observed on various bacterial pathogens. Of those, mutations and horizontal gene transfer, upregulation of efflux pumps, membrane alteration, and biofilm formation are the common mechanisms conferring biocide tolerance in bacteria. Further, the linkage between disinfectant use and antibiotic resistance was suggested in laboratory and real-life settings. Evidence showed that substantial bacterial transfers to hands could effectuate from short contacts with surrounding surfaces and further from fingers to lips. While current literature on disinfectant-induced antimicrobial resistance predominantly focuses on municipal wastes and the natural environments, in reality the community and public settings are most severely impacted by intensive and regular chemical disinfecting during COVID-19 and, due to their proximity to humans, biocide-tolerant and antibiotic-resistant bacteria emerged in these environments may pose risks of direct transfers to humans, particularly in densely populated urban communities. Here we highlight these risk factors by reviewing the most pertinent and up-to-date evidence, and provide several feasible strategies to mitigate these risks in the scenario of a prolonging pandemic.
