Microplastics in plant-soil ecosystems: A meta-analysis

Microplastic pollution is a recognized hazard in aquatic systems, but in the past decade has emerged as a pollutant of interest in terrestrial ecosystems. This paper is the first formal meta-analysis to examine the phytotoxic effects of microplastics and their impact on soil functions in the plant-soil system. Our specific aims were to: 1) determine how the type and size of microplastics affect plant and soil health, 2) identify which agricultural plants are more sensitive to microplastics, and 3) investigate how the frequency and amount of microplastic pollution affect soil functions. Plant morphology, antioxidant production and photosynthesis capacity were impacted by the composition of polymers in microplastics, and the responses could be negative, positive or neutral depending on the polymer type. Phytotoxicity testing revealed that maize (Zea mays) was more sensitive than rice (Oryza sativa) and wheat (Triticum aestivum) within the Poaceae family, while wheat and lettuce (Lactuca sativa) were less sensitive to microplastics exposure. Microplastics-impacted soils tend to be more porous and retain more water, but this did not improve soil stability or increase soil microbial diversity, suggesting that microplastics occupied physical space but were not integrated into the soil biophysical matrix. The meta-data revealed that microplastics enhanced soil evapotranspiration, organic carbon, soil porosity, CO₂ flux, water saturation, nitrogen content and soil microbial biomass, but decreased soil N₂O flux, water stable aggregates, water use efficiency, soil bulk density and soil microbial diversity.

Microplastics, an emerging pollutant in the environment, have attracted extensive attention in recent years for their possible negative impact on organisms. However, direct and indirect effects of polystyrene (PS) microplastics on vegetables are still not completely known. In this study, we used red lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. Red Sails) in a hydroponic system to investigate the effects of nano- and micro-sized PS and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) on the photosynthesis and red lettuce quality. The results clearly indicated that PS reduced the bioavailability of DBP while causing a decrease in the photosynthetic parameters as well as the total chorophyll content compared to DBP alone by affecting the crystalline structure of the water-soluble chlorophyll protein. Compared with DBP monotherapy, the presence of PS significantly increased hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde content in the lettuce treated with DBP, indicating serious oxidative damage. Furthermore, the soluble protein and sugar content in lettuce leaves decreased with higher PS concentration and smaller PS size. It may be due to PS inhibited lettuce root and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activities. In contrast, nitrite content increased significantly with the induction of the glutathione-ascorbic acid cycle, indicating that the presence of PS reduced the quality of DBP-treated-red lettuce. Additionally, the nano-sized PS greatly inhibited lettuce growth and quality more than the micro-sized PS. This study described the interactions between microplastics and phthalates using molecular simulation and experimental validation to highlight the potential risks of microplastics on vegetable crop production.

Currently, there is a lack of information about the influence of foliar-applied nanoplastics on crop growth and nutritional quality. To fill the knowledge gap, soil-grown lettuces (Lactuca sativa L.) were foliar-exposed to polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) at 0, 0.1 and 1 mg/L for one month. Foliar exposure to PSNPs significantly decreased the dry weight, height, and leaf area of lettuce by 14.3%–27.3%, 24.2%–27.3%, and 12.7%–19.2%, respectively, compared with the control. Similarly, plant pigment content (chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid) was considerably reduced (9.1%, 8.7%, 12.5%) at 1 mg/L PSNPs. However, the significant increase in electrolyte leakage rate (18.6%–25.5%) and the decrease in total antioxidant capacity (12.4%–26%) were the key indicators of oxidative stress in lettuce leaves, demonstrating the phytotoxicity of PSNPs by foliar exposure. In addition, the remarkable reduction in micronutrients and essential amino acids demonstrated a decrease in nutritional quality of lettuce caused by PSNPs. Besides, SEM and TEM analysis indicated the possible absorption of PSNPs through leaves stoma and the translocation downwards to plant roots. This study provides new information about the interaction of airborne NPs with plants. It also warns against atmospheric NPs pollution that the adverse effects of airborne NPs on crop production and food quality should be assessed as a matter of urgency.

Degradation of freshwater ecosystems by uncontrolled human activities is a growing concern in the tropics. In this regard, we aimed at testing an integrative framework based on the IFEQ index to assess freshwater ecosystem health of river basins impacted by intense livestock and agricultural activities, using the Muchacho River Basin (MRB) as a case study. The IFEQ combine multiple lines of evidence such as riverine hydromorphological analysis (LOE 1), physicochemical characterization using ions and pesticides (LOE 2), aquatic macroinvertebrate monitoring (LOE 3), and phytotoxicological essays with L. sativa (LOE 4). Overall, results showed an important reduction in streamflow and an elevated increase in ion concentrations along the MRB caused by deforestation and erosion linked to agricultural and livestock activities. Impacts of the high ion concentrations were evidenced in macroinvertebrate communities as pollution-tolerant families, associated with high conductivity levels, represented 92 % of the total abundance. Pollution produced by organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) was critical in the whole MRB, showing levels that exceeded 270-fold maximum threshold for malathion and 30-fold for parathion, the latter banned in Ecuador. OPPs concentrations were related to low germination percentages of Lactuca sativa in sediment phytotoxicity tests. The IEFQ index ranged from 44.4 to 25.6, indicating that freshwater ecosystem conditions were “bad” at the headwaters of the MRB and “critical” along the lowest reaches. Our results show strong evidence that intense agricultural and livestock activities generated significant impacts on the aquatic ecosystem of the MRB. This integrative approach better explains the cumulative effects of human impacts, and should be replicated in other basins with similar conditions to help decision-makers and concerned inhabitants generate adequate policies and strategies to mitigate the degradation of freshwater ecosystems.

Many pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are present in reclaimed water, leading to concerns of human health risks from the consumption of food crops irrigated with reclaimed water. This study evaluated the potential for plant uptake and accumulation of four commonly occurring PPCP/EDCs, i.e., bisphenol A (BPA), diclofenac sodium (DCL), naproxen (NPX), and 4-nonylphenol (NP), by lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and collards (Brassica oleracea) in hydroponic culture, using 14C-labeled compounds. In both plant species, plant accumulation followed the order of BPA > NP > DCL > NPX and accumulation in roots was much greater than in leaves and stems. Concentrations of 14C-PPCP/EDCs in plant tissues ranged from 0.22 ± 0.03 to 927 ± 213 ng/g, but nearly all 14C-residue was non-extractable. PPCP/EDCs, particularly BPA and NP, were also extensively transformed in the nutrient solution. Dietary uptake of these PPCP/EDCs by humans was predicted to be negligible.

Metal toxicity to lettuce Lactuca sativa was determined following mixture exposure based on the concepts of concentration addition (CA) and response addition (RA). On the basis of conventional models assuming no interaction between mixture components, Ag+ was the most toxic, followed by Cu2+ and Zn2+. Furthermore, ion–ion interactions were included in quantitatively estimating toxicity of interactive mixtures of Cu2+–Zn2+ and Cu2+–Ag+ by linearly expanding the CA and RA models. About 80–92% of the variability in the root growth could be explained by this approach. Estimates by the extended models indicate significant alleviative effects of Zn2+ on Cu2+ toxicity whereas Cu2+ did not significantly affect Zn2+ toxicity. According to the extended CA model, Cu2+ significantly reduced Ag+ toxicity while Ag+ enhanced Cu2+ toxicity. Similar effects were not found by the extended RA model. These interactions might result from their individual uptake mechanisms and toxic actions as published in literature.

Water treatment residuals (WTRs) are produced by the treatment of potable water with coagulating agents. Beneficial recycling in agriculture is hampered by the fact that WTRs contain potentially toxic contaminants (e.g. copper and aluminium) and they bind phosphorus strongly. These issues were investigated using a plant bioassay (Lactuca sativa), chemical extractions and an isotopic dilution technique. Two WTRs were applied to an acidic and a neutral pH soil at six rates. Reductions in plant growth in amended soils were due to WTR-induced P deficiency, rather than Al or Cu toxicity. The release of potentially toxic Al from WTRs was found to be mitigated by their alkaline nature and pH buffering capacity. However, acidification of WTRs was shown to release more soluble Al than soil naturally high in Al. Copper availability was relatively low in all treatments. However, the lability of WTR-Cu increased when the WTR was applied to the soil.

Particles from channelled emissions of a battery recycling facility were size-segregated and investigated to correlate their speciation and morphology with their transfer towards lettuce. Microculture experiments carried out with various calcareous soils spiked with micronic and sub-micronic particles (1650 ± 20 mg Pb kg-1) highlighted a greater transfer in soils mixed with the finest particles. According to XRD and Raman spectroscopy results, the two fractions presented differences in the amount of minor lead compounds like carbonates, but their speciation was quite similar, in decreasing order of abundance: PbS, PbSO4, PbSO4·PbO, α-PbO and Pb0. Morphology investigations revealed that PM2.5 (i.e. Particulate Matter 2.5 composed of particles suspended in air with aerodynamic diameters of 2.5 μm or less) contained many Pb nanoballs and nanocrystals which could influence lead availability. The soil-plant transfer of lead was mainly influenced by size and was very well estimated by 0.01 M CaCl2 extraction. The soil-lettuce lead transfer from atmospheric industrial sub-micronic and micronic particles depends on particle size.
