International audience | Revegetation of abandoned aquaculture regions should be a priority for any integrated coastal zone management (ICZM). This paper examines the potential of a matchless time series of 20 very high spatial resolution (VHSR) optical satellite images acquired for mapping trends in the evolution of mangrove forests from 2001 to 2015 in an estuary fragmented into aquaculture ponds. Evolution of mangrove extent was quantified through robust multitemporal analysis based on supervised image classification. Results indicated that mangroves are expanding inside and outside ponds and over pond dykes. However, the yearly expansion rate of vegetation cover greatly varied between replanted ponds. Ground truthing showed that only Rhizophora species had been planted, whereas natural mangroves consist of Avicennia and Sonneratia species. In addition, the dense Rhizophora plantations present very low regeneration capabilities compared with natural mangroves. Time series of VHSR images provide comprehensive and intuitive level of information for the support of ICZM.

Sessile benthic organisms are considered good bioindicators for monitoring environmental quality of coastal ecosystems. However, these environments are impacted by new pollutants such as microplastics (MPs), where there is limited information about organisms that can be used as reliable bioindicators of these emerging contaminants. We evaluated MP concentrations in three compartments: surface sediment, water and in three marine sponge species (Haliclona implexiformis, Halichondria melanadocia and Amorphinopsis atlantica), to determine whether these organisms accumulate MPs and reflect their possible sources. Results showed MPs in all three compartments. Average concentrations ranged from 1861 to 3456 items kg⁻¹ of dry weight in marine sponges, 130 to 287 items L⁻¹ in water and 6 to 11 items kg⁻¹ in sediment. The maximum MP concentration was in the sponge A. atlantica, which registered 5000 items kg⁻¹ of dry weight, in water was 670 items L⁻¹ and in sediment was 28 items kg⁻¹, these values were found in the disturbed study area. The three sponge species exhibited MP bioaccumulation and showed significant differences between disturbed and pristine sites (F = 11.2, p < 0.05), suggesting their use as bioindicators of MP.

Mangroves are complex and dynamic ecosystems highly dependent on diverse microbial activities. In the last decades, these ecosystems have been exposed to and affected by diverse human activities, such as waste disposal and accidental oil spills. Complex microbial communities inhabiting the soil and sediment of mangroves comprise microorganisms that have developed mechanisms to adapt to organic and inorganic contaminants. The resistance of these microbes to contaminants is an attractive property and also the reason why soil and sediment living microorganisms and their enzymes have been considered promising for environmental detoxification. The aim of the present study was to identify active microbial genes in heavy metals, i.e., Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb and Hg, and antibiotic resistomes of polluted and pristine mangrove sediments through the comparative analysis of metatranscriptome data. The concentration of the heavy metals Zn, Cr, Pb, Cu, Ni, Cd, and Hg and abundance of genes and transcripts involved in resistance to toxic compounds (the cobalt-zinc-cadmium resistance protein complex; the cobalt-zinc-cadmium resistance protein CzcA and the cation efflux system protein CusA) have been closely associated with sites impacted with petroleum, sludge and other urban waste. The taxonomic profiling of metatranscriptome sequences suggests that members of Gammaproteobacteria and Deltaproteobacteria classes contribute to the detoxification of the polluted soil. Desulfobacterium autotrophicum was the most abundant microorganism in the oil-impacted site and displayed specific functions related to heavy metal resistance, potentially playing a key role in the successful persistence of the microbial community of this site.

Phytotoxicity results are reviewed for oils, dispersants and dispersed oils. The phytotoxicity database consists largely of results from a patchwork of reactive research conducted after oil spills to marine waters. Toxicity information is available for at least 41 crude oils and 56 dispersants. As many as 107 response parameters have been monitored for 85 species of unicellular and multicellular algae, 28 wetland plants, 13 mangroves and 9 seagrasses. Effect concentrations have varied by as much as six orders of magnitude due to experimental diversity. This diversity restricts phytotoxicity predictions and identification of sensitive species, life stages and response parameters. As a result, evidence-based risk assessments for most aquatic plants and petrochemicals and dispersants are not supported by the current toxicity database. A proactive and experimentally-consistent approach is recommended to provide threshold toxic effect concentrations for sensitive life stages of aquatic plants inhabiting diverse ecosystems.

To verify weather mangroves act as sinks for marine litter, we surveyed through visual census 20 forests along the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf, both in inhabited and remote locations. Anthropogenic debris items were counted and classified along transects, and the influence of main drivers of distribution were considered (i.e. land-based and ocean-based sources, density of the forest and properties of the object). We confirmed that distance to major maritime traffic routes significantly affects the density of anthropogenic debris in Red Sea mangrove forests, while this was independent of land-based activities. This suggests ocean-based activities combined with surface currents as major drivers of litter in this basin. Additionally, litter was more abundant where the mangrove density was higher, and object distribution through the mangrove stand often depended on their shape and dimension. We particularly show that pneumatophores act as a sieve retaining large plastic objects, leading to higher plastic mass estimates in mangroves compared to those of beaches previously surveyed in the Red Sea.

Structurally complex habitats, such as mangrove forests, allow for rich assemblages of species that benefit from the provided space, volume and substrate. Changes in habitat complexity can affect species abundance, diversity and resilience. In this study, we explored the effects of habitat complexity on food web networks in four developmental stages of mangrove forests with differing structural complexities: climax > degrading > colonizing > bare, by analyzing food web structure, stable isotopes and habitat complexity. We found that food webs became gradually more biodiverse (species richness: +119 %), complex (link density: +39 %), and robust (connectance: −35 %) in climax versus bare stages with increasing complexity of the mangrove forest (i.e., number of trees, leaf cover, and pneumatophore densities). This study shows that habitat complexity drives food web network structure in dynamic mangrove forests. We recommend restoration practitioners to use this food web network approach to quantify habitat restoration successes complementary to traditional biodiversity metrics.

The TRopical Oil Pollution Investigations in Coastal Systems (TROPICS) experiment, conducted on the Caribbean coast of Panama, has become one of the most comprehensive field experiments examining the long-term impacts of oil and dispersed oil exposures in nearshore tropical marine environments. From the initial experiment through more than three decades of study and data collection visits, the intertidal and subtidal communities have exhibited significantly different impact and recovery regimes, depending on whether the sites were exposed to crude oil only or crude oil treated with a chemical dispersant. This review provides a synopsis of the original experiment and a cumulative summary of the results and observations, illustrating the environmental and ecosystem trade-offs of chemical dispersant use in mangrove, seagrass, and coral reef environments.

Mangroves are often exposed to heavy metals that accumulate in the food chain, generate toxicity to mangrove plants and affect microbial diversity. This study determined the abundance of genes associated with resistance and tolerance to heavy metals in the rhizosphere microbiome of Avicennia germinans from a semi-arid mangrove of La Guajira-Colombia by metagenomics and genomics approach. Twenty-eight genes associated with tolerance and 49 genes related to resistance to heavy metals were detected. Genes associated with tolerance and resistance to Cu, especially cusA and copA, were the most abundant. The highest number of genes for tolerance and resistance were for Zn and Co, respectively. The isolate Vibrio fluvialis showed the ability to tolerate Cu, Ni, Zn, and Cd. This work used a complementary approach of metagenomics and genomics to characterize the potential of mangrove microorganisms to tolerate and resist heavy metals and the influence of salinity on their abundance.

Mangroves are among the most productive coastal ecosystems; however, they are prone to anthropogenic pollution due to their land-sea interface position. We used stable nitrogen isotopes and spectrophotometric nitrate analysis to study the anthropogenic pollution in five mangrove ecosystems in Tanzania, including two polluted (Mzinga and Kizinga), one moderate (Kunduchi) and non-polluted (Mbegani and Ras Dege) sites. Also, we tested the suitability of mangrove leaves, roots, sediment, and gastropod as indicators of anthropogenic nitrogen pollution using stable δ¹⁵N isotope analysis. Results revealed higher than 10‰ δ¹⁵N values in all analysed components and the highest nitrate concentrations of 16.44 mg L⁻¹ in the interstitial waters at the polluted sites, indicating anthropogenic nitrogen inputs. The δ¹⁵N enrichment increased in the order: non-polluted < moderate < polluted. The polluted sites are fed by freshwater creeks and probably receive high loads of domestic sewage from the surrounding communities, industries, and agricultural effluents. Therefore, to protect mangrove ecosystems, proper waste and wastewater management upstream are recommended.
