Revisited a sediment quality triad approach in the Korean coastal waters: Past research, current status, and future directions

We present a comprehensive review of the sediment quality triad (SQT) assessment studies in Korea. The bibliographic analysis was applied to evaluate how approaches in sediment assessment have evolved. A meta-analysis was performed, to evaluate potential risks of sedimentary persistent toxic substances (PTSs) reported in Korean coastal waters. Within the framework, we identified and discussed current status and spatiotemporal trends in contamination of both classic and emerging PTSs over the recent decadal period. Out of 26 target regions in Korea, five hotspots (Sihwa, Masan, Ulsan, Taean, and Gwangyang) of concern could be identified. Four of those regions have been designated as Specially-Managed Sea Area under the implementation of Total Pollution Load Management System in Korea, except for Taean coast (oil spill site). Meantime, we could identify three stepwise research phases based on a bibliographic analysis; Phase 1 (1995–2008), Phase 2 (2009–2015), and Phase 3 (2016–2020). It is noteworthy that a technical evolution of the SQT assessment by the phase was featured. It was also evidenced that in-depth studies adopting multiple lines of evidence (LOEs) became prevailed upon approaching Phase 3. In a quantitative manner, the toxicity explanatory power of target PTSs increased by about 10% in Phase 3 compared to the earlier phases. The meta-analysis using ratio-to-mean value method applied for the data set having all three LOEs indicated general improvement of sediment qualities in the hotspots. However, their associations quite varied across regions and years, reflecting a dynamicity in oceanographic settings and/or heterogeneity in toxicological effect or benthic community response. At present, SQT assessment adopting the increased LOEs generally supports better assessment. In conclusion, we suggest that future SQT studies globally should reaffirm the utility of the “multiple LOEs approach”, focusing on the identification and management of causative toxicants that driving negative ecological impacts on marine ecosystems.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the 2019 and 2022 oil spill events that occurred off the coast of the State of Ceará, Northeastern Brazil. To further assess these mysterious oil spills, we investigated whether the oils stranded on the beaches of Ceará in 2019 and 2022 had the same origin, whether their compositional differences were due to weathering processes, and whether the materials from both were natural or industrially processed. We collected oil samples in October 2019 and January 2022, soon after their appearance on the beaches. We applied a forensic environmental geochemistry approach using both one-dimensional and two-dimensional gas chromatography to assess chemical composition. The collected material had characteristics of crude oil and not refined oils. In addition, the 2022 oil samples collected over 130 km of the east coast of Ceará had a similar chemical profile and were thus considered to originate from the same source. However, these oils had distinct biomarker profiles compared to those of the 2019 oils, including resistant terpanes and triaromatic steranes, thus excluding the hypothesis that the oil that reached the coast of Ceará in January 2022 is related to the tragedy that occurred in 2019. From a geochemical perspective, the oil released in 2019 is more thermally mature than that released in 2022, with both having source rocks with distinct types of organic matter and depositional environments. As the coast of Ceará has vast ecological diversity and Marine Protected Areas, the possibility of occasional oil spills in the area causing severe environmental pollution should be investigated from multiple perspectives, including forensic environmental geochemistry.

Microplastic pollution affects freshwater and marine biota worldwide, microplastics occurring even inside the organisms. With highly variable effects, from physical damage to toxicity of plastic compounds, microplastics are a potential threat to the biodiversity, community composition and organisms' health. This emerging pollutant could overstress diadromous species, which are exposed to both sea and river water in their life cycle. Here we have quantified microplastics in young European eel Anguilla anguilla, a critically endangered catadromous fish, entering three rivers in southwestern Bay of Biscay. River water, sediments and seawater were also analysed for microplastics. The microplastic type was identified using Fournier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy and then searched for their hazard potential at the European Chemical Agency site. Both riverine and sea microplastic pollution were predictors of eels’ microplastic profile (types of microplastics by shape and colour): A. anguilla juveniles entering European rivers already carry some marine microplastics and acquire more from river water. Potentially hazardous plastic materials were found from eels, some of them dangerous for aquatic life following the European Chemical Agency. This confirms microplastics as a potential threat for the species. Between-rivers differences for microplastics profiles persistent over years highlight the convenience of analysing and preventing microplastics at a local spatial scale, to save diadromous species from this stressor. Since the origin of microplastics present in glass eels seems to be dual (continental + seawater), new policies should be promoted to limit the entry of microplastics in sea and river waters.

The Black Sea is a semi-enclosed basin subject to major anthropogenic pressures, including marine litter and plastic pollution. Due to numerous large rivers draining into the basin and a population settled along the coast, the region could accumulate significant amounts of floating litter over time. Until now, only limited field data were available, and litter quantities and distribution remained unknown. In this study, floating marine macro litter (FMML) was assessed at the regional Black Sea scale for the first time, showing relatively high litter densities across the basin that reached a weighted mean of 81.5 items/km². Monitoring data revealed an accumulation of floating items offshore in the eastern part of the basin, resembling on a small scale a ‘garbage patch’, where litter items were trapped, showing elevated densities in comparison to their surrounding areas. Most of these items were made of plastic materials (ca. 96%) and included large numbers of plastic and polystyrene fragments of small size ranges (2.5–10 cm). Harmonised field data collection through consistent and regular monitoring programmes across the region is essential to establish baselines and thresholds for large scale assessment at international level.

Concentrations of organophosphate esters (OPEs) plasticizers were analysed in the present study. Fifty-five fish samples belonging to three highly commercial species, European sardine (Sardina pilchardus), European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), and European hake (Merluccius merluccius), were taken from the Western Mediterranean Sea. OPEs were detected in all individuals, except for two hake samples, with concentrations between 0.38 and 73.4 ng/g wet weight (ww). Sardines presented the highest mean value with 20.5 ± 20.1 ng/g ww, followed by anchovies with 14.1 ± 8.91 ng/g ww and hake with 2.48 ± 1.76 ng/g ww. The lowest OPE concentrations found in hake, which is a partial predator of anchovy and sardine, and the higher δ¹⁵N values (as a proxy of trophic position), may indicate the absence of OPEs biomagnification. Eleven out of thirteen tested OPEs compounds were detected, being diphenyl cresyl phosphate (DCP) one of the most frequently detected in all the species. The highest concentration values were obtained for tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDClPP), trihexyl phosphate (THP), and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP), for sardines, anchovies, and hakes, respectively. The human health risk associated with the consumption of these fish species showing that their individual consumption would not pose a considerable threat to public health regarding OPE intake.

Oil spill causes extreme environmental damage, from aquatic life to seabirds, disrupting the entire ecosystem. Herein, we have synthesized high scale, economical and bio-compatible, green algae mediated Titanium oxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles and Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber mats. We have studied the effect of encapsulation and coating of TiO₂ nanoparticles over nanofiber mats for highly efficient oil spill adsorption. TiO₂ encapsulated and coated PAN (TECP) nanofibers showed a maximum of 62.34 g g⁻¹ adsorption capacity of petroleum oil from the water surface. Moreover, the composite mats show maximum adsorption within 45 s for up to 5 repeated cycles. Further, it has been observed that the adsorption capacity has increased by increasing the weight of the composite nanofiber mats, which confirms its commercial applicability. Thus, this work provides rapid, large-scale, economical, bio-compatible, and highly effective adsorbents for oil spill cleaning and extraction over natural waterbodies.

In this study, 214 surface sediment samples were collected from the offshore area of the Dongying coast and were analysed for heavy metals; particularly, their concentrations and pollution status were evaluated. The copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr) distributions were similar, their concentrations were the highest in the northeast areas and the Xiaoqing River estuary, where dominated by fine-grained sediments. Higher concentrations of lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As) were generally found in the offshore area of the study location, and the highest Cd concentration was observed in the Xiaoqing River estuary. The sediments were not polluted by Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cr; they were not polluted or moderately polluted by Cd and As. Results of the principal component analysis indicated that Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cr were derived from natural sources and Cd and As were derived from anthropogenic sources.

This study assessed the seasonal variation in the magnitude of marine litter along the Gulf of Guinea coastline, Araromi seaside, Nigeria with a survey of twenty sampling sites. The total number of litter items collected was 29,029 comprising 7358 and 21,671 items in the dry and rainy season respectively. The average number of items per square meter was higher in the rainy season (1.80 ± 0.35) than in the dry season (0.61 ± 0.19). Plastic materials dominated the litter composition with 86 % and 91.8 % in the dry and rainy season respectively. The beach cleanliness assessed as clean coast index (CCI) depicted the beach as dirty (12.26 ± 3.74) during the dry season and extremely dirty (36.13 ± 6.91) in the rainy season. The hazardous item index (HII) also showed the coastline was littered with hazardous items. These results provide baseline data for marine litter management along the Gulf of Guinea coastlines and other coastlines in Africa.

Ingestion of marine debris by ocean sunfishes is not very well documented. As the feeding behaviour of these giants of the seas is very similar to marine turtles, it is expected that the accidental ingestion of plastics could be registered in these species of fish. With this work it is noticed for the first time the presence of a blue plastic fragment, classified by its size as a mesoplastic, in the digestive system of Mola mola (L.) (Molidae) from western Mediterranean Sea.

Since 2015, green tides have impacted the coastal waters of Qinhuangdao, particularly at Jinmenghaiwan bath. Micro-propagules are considered the “seed bank” of algal blooms and play an important role in the formation of green tides. To investigate the spatial and temporal distributions of micro-propagules of green algae and associated environmental factors, a field survey was carried out in the coastal waters of Jinmenghaiwan, Qinhuangdao, China. The results showed that the NO₃-N concentration was the most important impact factor of the abundance of micro-propagules and explained 42.9% of the total variance. Furthermore, the number of micro-propagules was significantly and positively correlated with the biomass of attached and floating macroalgae. Therefore, reducing the NO₃-N concentration by controlling the NO₃-N input from Tang River is expected to be an effective measure to prevent and control green tides in the coastal waters of Qinhuangdao.
