It is a common practice to maintain soil fertility based on the paddy-upland rotation with green manure in the subtropical region of China. However, rare studies are known about greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the paddy-upland rotation with green manure incorporation. Therefore, we conducted a field experiment of two years to compared with the effect of two kinds of green manure (CV: Chinese milk vetch and OR: Oilseed rape), and two kinds of cropping system (DR: double rice system and PR: paddy-upland rotation) on greenhouse gases emissions. We have found that the annual accumulation of CH₄ of Chinese milk vetch-rice-sweet potato || soybean was significantly reduced by 32.95%∼63.22% compared with other treatments, mainly because Chinese milk vetch reduced the abundance of methanogens by reducing soil C/N ratio. Meanwhile increasing soil permeability resulting from paddy-upland rotation also reduced soil CH₄ emission. However, The annual accumulation of N₂O of Chinese milk vetch-rice-sweet potato || soybean was increased by 17.39%∼870.11% compared with other treatments, mainly attributed to paddy-upland rotation decreased soil pH and nosZ abundance and increased nirK and nirS, thus enhancing N₂O emission, meanwhile the Chinese milk vetch incorporation and its interaction with the paddy-upland rotation has greatly enhanced the contents of NO₃⁻-N and abundance of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA). The area-scaled global warming potential (GWP) and the biomass-scaled greenhouse gas emissions intensity (GHGI) of Chinese milk vetch-rice-sweet potato || soybean was reduced by 19.01%∼50.69% and 5.38%∼35.77% respectively. Thereby, the Chinese milk vetch-rice-sweet potato || soybean cropping system was suitable for agricultural sustainable development.

Microbes indigenous to oil sands tailings ponds methanogenically biodegrade certain hydrocarbons, including n-alkanes and monoaromatics, whereas other hydrocarbons such as iso- and cycloalkanes are more recalcitrant. We tested the susceptibility of iso- and cycloalkanes to methanogenic biodegradation by incubating them with mature fine tailings (MFT) collected from two depths (6 and 31 m below surface) of a tailings pond, representing different lengths of exposure to hydrocarbons. A mixture of five iso-alkanes and three cycloalkanes was incubated with MFT for 1700 d. Iso-alkanes were completely biodegraded in the order 3-methylhexane > 4-methylheptane > 2-methyloctane > 2-methylheptane, whereas 3-ethylhexane and ethylcyclopentane were only partially depleted and methylcyclohexane and ethylcyclohexane were not degraded during incubation. Pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA genes showed enrichment of Peptococcaceae (Desulfotomaculum) and Smithella in amended cultures with acetoclastic (Methanosaeta) and hydrogenotrophic methanogens (Methanoregula and Methanoculleus). Bioaugmentation of MFT by inoculation with MFT-derived enrichment cultures reduced the lag phase before onset of iso-alkane and cycloalkane degradation. However, the same enrichment culture incubated without MFT exhibited slower biodegradation kinetics and less CH₄ production, implying that the MFT solid phase (clay minerals) enhanced methanogenesis. These results help explain and predict continued emissions of CH₄ from oil sands tailings repositories in situ.

In this study, a pilot combined sewer system was constructed to characterize the pollutant transformation in sewer sediment. The results showed that particulate contaminants deposited from sewage could be transformed into dissolved matter by distinct pollutant transformation pathways. Although the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) was varied from −80 mV to −340 mV in different region of the sediment, the fermentation was the dominant process in all regions of the sediment, which induced hydrolysis and decomposition of particulate contaminants. As a result, the accumulation of dissolved organic matter and the variation of ORP values along the sediment depth led to the depth-dependent reproduction characteristics of methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria, which were existed in the middle and deep layer of the sediment respectively. However, the diversity of nitrifying and polyphosphate-accumulating bacteria was low in sewer sediment and those microbial communities showed a non-significant correlation with nitrogen and phosphorus contaminants, which indicated that the enrichment of nitrogen and phosphorus contaminants was mainly caused by physical deposition process. Thus, this study proposed a promising pathway to evaluate pollutant transformation and can help provide theoretical foundation for urban sewer improvement.

The sediment microbial fuel cell (SMFC) has potential application to control the degradation of decayed cyanobacterial bloom biomass (CBB) in sediment in eutrophic lakes. In this study, temperatures from 4 to 35 °C were investigated herein as the major impact on SMFC performance in CBB-amended sediment. Under low temperature conditions, the SMFC could still operate, and produced a maximum power density of 4.09 mW m−2 at 4 °C. Coupled with the high substrate utilization, high output voltage was generated in SMFCs at high temperatures. The application of SMFC affected the anaerobic fermentation progress and was detrimental to the growth of methanogens. At the same time, organic matter of sediments in SMFC became more humified. As a result, the fermentation of CBB was not accelerated with the SMFC application, and the removal efficiency of the total organic matter was inhibited by 5% compared to the control. Thus, SMFC could operate well year round in sediments with a temperature ranging from 4 to 35 °C, and also exhibit practical value by inhibiting quick CBB decomposition in sediments in summer against the pollution of algae organic matter.

Widespread conversion of coastal wetlands into aquaculture ponds in coastal region often results in degradation of the wetland ecosystems, but its effects on sediment's potential to produce greenhouse gases remain unclear. Using field sampling, incubation experiments and molecular analysis, we studied the sediment CH₄ production potential and the relevant microbial communities in a brackish marsh and the nearby aquaculture ponds in the Min River Estuary in southeastern China. Sediment CH₄ production potential was higher in the summer and autumn months than in spring and winter months, and it was significantly correlated with sediment carbon content among all environmental variables. The mean sediment CH₄ production potential in the aquaculture ponds (20.1 ng g⁻¹ d⁻¹) was significantly lower than that in the marsh (45.2 ng g⁻¹ d⁻¹). While Methanobacterium dominated in both habitats (41–59%), the overall composition of sediment methanogenic archaea communities differed significantly between the two habitats (p < 0.05) and methanogenic archaea alpha diversity was lower in the aquaculture ponds (p < 0.01). Network analysis revealed that interactions between sediment methanogenic archaea were much weaker in the ponds than in the marsh. Overall, these findings suggest that conversion of marsh land to aquaculture ponds significantly altered the sediment methanogenic archaea community structure and diversity and lowered the sediment's capacity to produce CH₄.

In situ anoxic bioremediation is an easy-to-use technology to remediate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated soil. Degradation of PAHs mediated by soil bacteria and archaea using CO₂ as the electron acceptor is an important process for eliminating PAHs under methanogenic conditions; however, knowledge of the performance and mechanisms involved is poorly unveiled. In this study, the effectiveness and efficiency of NaHCO₃ (CO₂) as an electron acceptor to stimulate the degradation of PAHs by bacteria and archaea in highly contaminated soil were investigated. The results showed that CO₂ addition (EC2000) promoted PAH degradation compared to soil without added CO₂ (EC0), with 4.18%, 9.01%–8.05%, and 6.19%–12.45% increases for 2-, 3- and 4-ring PAHs after 250 days of incubation, respectively. Soil bacterial abundances increased with increasing incubation time, especially for EC2000 (2.90 × 10⁸ g⁻¹ soil higher than EC0, p < 0.05). Different succession patterns of the soil bacterial and archaeal communities during PAH degradation were observed. According to the PCoA and ANOSIM results, the soil bacterial communities were greatly (ANOSIM: R = 0.7232, P = 0.001) impacted by electron acceptors, whereas significant differences in the archaeal communities were not observed (ANOSIM: R = 0.553, P = 0.001). Soil bacterial and archaeal co-occurrence network analyses showed that positive correlations outnumbered the negative correlations throughout the incubation period for both treatments (e.g., EC0 and EC2000), suggesting the prevalence of coexistence/cooperation within and between these two domains rather than competition. The higher complexity, connectance, edge, and node numbers in EC2000 revealed stronger linkage and a more stable co-occurrence network compared to EC0. The results of this study could improve the knowledge on the removal of PAHs and the responses of soil bacteria and archaea to CO₂ application, as well as a scientific basis for the in situ anoxic bioremediation of PAH-contaminated industrial sites.

Cyanobacterial blooms have considerable effects on lacustrine microbial communities. The current study explored the temporal pattern of sedimentary archaea and bacteria during cyanobacterial bloom in a eutrophic lake. With the sampling period divided into bloom phase, interval phase and end phase according to the variation of physicochemical parameters, the structures and functions of both kingdoms presented a significant difference among phases. Bloom phases could be characterized with the lowest diversity and up-regulated functions in biodegradation of cyanobacterial metabolites driven by bacteria. Archaeal community showed an increased metabolic function during interval phases, including active methanogenesis sensitive to carbon input. The highest diversity and an enrichment of hub genera in microbial network were both observed in end phase, allowing for closer cooperation among groups involved in cyanobacteria-derived organic matter transformation. Although the archaeal community was less variable or diverse than bacteria, methanogenic functions dramatically fluctuated with cyanobacterial dynamics. And microbial groups related to methane cycling played an important role in microbial network. The results provided new insights into temporal dynamics of lacustrine microbial communities and microbial co-occurrence, and highlighted the significant ecological role of methane cycling-related microbes in lake sediments under the influence of cyanobacterial blooms.

Anaerobic digestion is an attractive waste treatment technology, achieving both pollution control and energy recovery. Though the inhibition of polystyrene nanoplastics in anaerobic granular sludge is well studied, no direct evidence has been found on the interaction of methanogens and nanoplastics. In this study, to characterize the location of nanoplastics, Pd-doped polystyrene nanoplastics (Pd-PS) were used to explore the inhibition mechanism of anaerobic sludge through short-term exposure to Methanosarcina acetivorans C2A. The results showed that Pd-PS inhibited the methanogenesis of the anaerobic sludge, and the methane production decreased as the Pd-PS increased, with a 14.29% reduction at the Pd-PS concentration of 2.36 × 10¹⁰ particles/mL. Also, Pd-PS interacted with the protein in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Furthermore, Pd-PS inhibited the methanogenesis of M. acetivorans C2A without exhibiting an evident reduction in the growth. The inhibition of Pd-PS on methane was due to the inhibition of methane production related genes, MtaA and mcrA. These results provide potential explication for the inhibition of nanoplastics on the methanogens, which will fulfill the knowledge on the stability of methanogens under the short-term exposure of nanoplastics.

Hydrochar (HC), an environment-friendly material, enhances soil carbon sequestration and mitigate greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions in croplands. In this study, the water-washed HC (WW-HC) was applied to paddy soil to investigate effects on nitrous oxide (N₂O) and methane (CH₄) emissions during rice growth period. Four treatments, namely control (without N fertilizer and WW-HC), N fertilizer (WW-HC00), N fertilizer with 0.5 wt% WW-HC (WW-HC05) and N fertilizer with 1.5 wt% WW-HC (WW-HC15), were established. Results showed the WW-HC addition reduced N₂O and CH₄ emissions, global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) during the growing season. Moreover, the WW-HC application reduced N₂O cumulative emission (P < 0.05) (by 28.6% and 23.8% for WW-HC05 and WW-HC15, respectively). It was mainly due to the reduced ratio of (nirK + nirS) to nosZ under WW-HC15 (P < 0.05). Compared with WW-HC00, the WW-HC05 reduced CH₄ cumulative emissions by 14.8%, while the WW-HC15 increased by 9.7%. This might be ascribed to the significantly reduced expression of the methanogenic mcrA gene and ratio of mcrA to pmoA by WW-HC (P < 0.05). The WW-HC05 amendment decreased GWP and GHGI by 18.6% and 32.5%, respectively. Furthermore, the WW-HC application greatly improved nitrogen use efficiency by 116–145% compared with the control. Our study indicates the WW-HC application is a promising GHGs mitigation practice in paddy fields.

The anaerobic digestion of wastewater rich in volatile fatty acids (VFAs) provides a sustainable approach for methane production whilst reducing environmental pollution. However, the anaerobic digestion of VFAs may not be stable during long-term operation under a short hydraulic retention time. In this study, conductive carbon cloth was supplemented to investigate the impacts on the anaerobic digestion of VFAs in wastewater sourced from dark fermentation. The results demonstrated that the failure of anaerobic digestion could be avoided when carbon cloth was supplemented. In the stable stage, the methane production rate with carbon cloth supplementation was improved by 200–260%, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was significantly enhanced compared with that in the control without carbon cloth. The relative abundance of potential exoelectrogens on the carbon cloth was increased by up to 8-fold compared with that in the suspension. Electrotrophic methanogens on the carbon cloth were enriched by 4.2–17.2% compared with those in the suspension. The genera Ercella and Petrimonas along with the methanogenic archaea Methanosaeta and Methanosarcina on the carbon cloth may facilitate direct interspecies electron transfer, thereby enhancing methane production.
