The present study investigated the impact of solar UV radiation on ZnO nanoparticle toxicity through photocatalytic ROS generation and photo-induced dissolution. Toxicity of ZnO nanoparticles to Daphnia magna was examined under laboratory light versus simulated solar UV radiation (SSR). Photocatalytic ROS generation and particle dissolution were measured on a time-course basis. Two toxicity mitigation assays using CaCl2 and N-acetylcysteine were performed to differentiate the relative importance of these two modes of action. Enhanced ZnO nanoparticle toxicity under SSR was in parallel with photocatalytic ROS generation and enhanced particle dissolution. Toxicity mitigation by CaCl2 to a less extent under SSR than under lab light demonstrates the role of ROS generation in ZnO toxicity. Toxicity mitigation by N-acetylcysteine under both irradiation conditions confirms the role of particle dissolution and ROS generation. These findings demonstrate the importance of considering environmental solar UV radiation when assessing ZnO nanoparticle toxicity and risk in aquatic systems.

Trace metals are one of the groups of pollutants that reduce genetic variability in natural populations, causing the phenomenon known as "genetic erosion". In this study we evaluate the relationship between trace metals contamination (Hg, Cd and Cu) and genetic variability, assessed using fluorescent Inter-Simple Sequence Repeats (fISSRs). We used eight populations of a well-established biomonitor of trace metals on sandy beaches: the amphipod Talitrus saltator. The trace metals analysis confirmed the ability of sandhoppers to accumulate Hg, Cd and Cu. Moreover, populations from sites with high Hg availability had the lowest values of genetic diversity. Our results validate the use of fISSR markers in genetic studies in sandhoppers and support the "genetic erosion" hypothesis by showing the negative influence of Hg contamination on sandhopper genetic diversity. Therefore, genetic variability assessed with fISSR markers could be successfully employed as a biomarker of Hg exposure.

The emerging insensitive munitions compound (IMC) 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazole-5-one (NTO) is currently being used to replace conventional explosives such as 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (RDX), but the environmental fate of this increasingly widespread IMC remains poorly understood. Upon release from unexploded solid phase ordinances, NTO exhibits high aqueous solubility and, hence, potential mobilization to groundwater. Adsorption and abiotic transformation at metal oxide surfaces are possible mechanisms for natural attenuation. Here, the reactions at ferrihydrite and birnessite surfaces of NTO and its biotransformation product, 3-amino-1, 2, 4-triazol-5-one (ATO), were studied in stirred batch reactor systems at controlled pH (7.0). The study was carried out at metal oxide solid to solution ratios (SSR) of 0.15, 1.5 and 15 g kg−1. The samples were collected at various time intervals up to 3 h after reaction initiation, and analyzed using HPLC with photodiode array and mass spectrometric detection. We found no detectable adsorption or transformation of NTO upon reaction with birnessite, whereas ATO was highly susceptible to oxidation by the same mineral, showing nearly complete transformation within 5 min at 15 g kg−1 SSR to urea, CO2(g) and N2(g). The mean surface-area-normalized pseudo-first order rate constant (k) for ATO oxidation by birnessite across all SSRs was 0.05 ± 0.022 h−1 m−2, and oxidation kinetics were independent of dissolved O2 concentration. Both NTO and ATO were resistant to oxidation by ferrihydrite. However, NTO showed partial removal from solution upon reaction with ferrihydrite at 0.15 and 1.5 g kg−1 SSR and complete loss at 15 g kg−1 SSR due to strong adsorption. Conversely, ATO adsorption to ferrihydrite was much weaker than that measured for NTO.

Radioactive pollution comes on the top of pollution types that affect human life directly through damaging the human genome or indirectly via his food web. The current study focused on the evaluation of radiation effects of Assiut Thermal Power Plant (ATPP) ashes on two crop plants, potato and squash, in terms of morphological and molecular levels. More particularly, the specific activity concentrations were measured in Bq/kg, of the ²³⁸U (²²⁶Ra) and ²³²Th series, and ⁴⁰K-isotope for the untreated soil sample (control) and ATPP ash sample (represents the radioactive source with 100% concentration). Different concentrations of ATPP ash (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8%) were mixed with soil sample to study the effect of radioactively contaminated soil on potato and squash plants. The results of the present investigation revealed that the morphological characteristics of both potato and squash plants were changed, which reflected a steep regression in the values of all vegetative growth and yield traits. The alterations of the characteristic values were directly proportional to the radioactive ash concentration in the soil. In the same context, the molecular evaluation using PCR-based markers, e.g., ISSR and SCoT helps in understanding and explaining experimental observations at morphological level. ISSR/SCoT bands confirmed the toxicity and mutagenicity of radioactive ash samples at their present dose on both potato and squash plants. The present findings clearly explained the morphometric and genetic abnormalities in two of the main consumed crops by a human. Thus, the green area around the ATPP may disappear in the future due to increasing the pollution in terms of the radioactive component that directly attached to plants or indirectly by mixing with soil.

The genetic diversity of giant tiger prawns in relation to trace metals (TMs) pollution was analysed using 159 individuals from eight sites at the Tanzanian coast. The seven microsatellites analysed showed high degree of polymorphism (4–44 alleles). The measured genetic diversity (Ho=0.592±0.047) was comparable to that of populations in the Western Indian Ocean. Apart from that, correlation analysis revealed significant negative associations between genetic diversity and TMs pollution (p<0.05), supporting the genetic erosion hypothesis. Limited gene flow was indicated by a significant genetic differentiation (FST=0.059, p<0.05). The Mantel test rejected the isolation-by-distance hypothesis, but revealed that gene flow along the Tanzanian coast is limited by TMs pollution. This suggests that TMs affect larvae settlement and it may account for the measured deficiency of heterozygosity. This calls for strengthened pollution control measures in order to conserve this commercially important species.

Green tides have occurred in Qingdao coast in China for seven consecutive years from 2007 to 2013. To provide information on the genetic structure of these blooms, 210 free-floating green algae samples isolated from the green tide in Qingdao coast on June 19, 2013 were identified based on the ITS, rbcL and 5S sequence, and genetic diversity was investigated by microsatellite markers. According to ITS, rbcL and 5S sequence, all the 210 samples belonged to Ulva prolifera. Nei's genetic diversity and Shannon index estimated using eight microsatellite markers indicated that the genetic diversity of U. prolifera population within Qingdao's green bloom in 2013 was low. Taking into account previous reports about life history and physiology of U. prolifera, we proposed that the limited origin area of the free-floating biomass and asexual reproduction of U. prolifera might be responsible for the lower diversity of free floating U. prolifera.

Wild animals that inhabit inside mine tailings which contain heavy metals are an excellent study model to conduct ecotoxicological studies that analyze chronic metal exposures at low doses (realistic exposures). This study was conducted in Huautla, Morelos, Mexico, in a mining district where 780,000 tons of wastes were deposited in open air. Liomys irroratus is a small mammal species that lives inside these mine tailings. A multibiomarker approach study was performed to analyze metal bioaccumulation levels (biomarker of exposure) by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, DNA damage levels (biomarker of early effects) through the alkaline comet assay, and population genetic structure and diversity (biomarker of permanent effects), using seven microsatellite loci, in 75 L. irroratus individuals, from two mine tailings and one reference site. Concentrations of aluminum, copper, iron, nickel, lead, and zinc were statistically higher in the liver of exposed individuals. Significant DNA damage levels were registered in the mine tailings groups. Aluminum, lead, and nickel had the highest contribution to the genetic damage levels observed, while aluminum and nickel had the highest contribution to genetic diversity effects. A positive and significant relationship was detected between individual genetic diversity (internal relatedness) and genetic damage (DNA single-strand breaks). Genetic structure of L. irroratus populations revealed that the main source of genetic variation was located within populations. We consider that multibiomarker studies in environmental settings using sentinel species are valuable for environmental risk assessment and ecological responses in chronic exposed populations.

Agricultural practices are the main source of water contamination in rural areas. Rainfall events, and subsequently, soil leaching and storm runoff are mainly controlling the transfer of pollutants from diffuse sources in watersheds during floods. These periods are also very important to better understand their dynamics, particularly their different soil-river transfer pathways (surface runoff SR, subsurface runoff SSR, and groundwater flow GF). This study focuses on riverine transfers of both pesticides and trace elements. High-resolution monitoring of water discharge and water sampling were performed during a flood event that occured in May 2010 in an agricultural catchment of SW France. Chemical composition of major and trace elements, silica, alkalinity, pH and conductivity, DOC and POC, TSM, and commonly used pesticides were analyzed with a high sampling frequency. The different stream flow components (SR, SSR, and GF) were assessed using two independent hydrograph separation methods: a hydrological approach based on Maillet’s formula (1905) for the recession period and a chemical approach based on physico-chemical tracers, TSM for SR and PO₄³⁻ for GF. Both methods exhibited important contributions of SR (33 %) and SSR (40 %) to the total riverine pollutant transfers. The contribution of different components was also visible using concentration-discharge relationships which exhibited hysteresis phenomenon between the rising and the falling limbs of the hydrograph. Higher concentrations during the rising period (clockwise hysteresis) were characteristic of pollutants mainly exported by SR (trifluralin, Cd). Anticlockwise hysteresis with higher concentration during the recession period showed pollutants mainly exported by SSR (metolachlor, Cu). Moreover, significant relationships were highlighted between the controlling factors (DOC, POC, and TSM) and SR, SSR, and GF contributions: DOC and the complexed pollutants were highly correlated to SSR while POC, TSM, and the adsorbed pollutants were linked to SR. During the flood, K d of most pollutants increased, particularly at the beginning, and therefore, future studies should investigate their availability to living organisms and thus their toxicity. An additional characteristic equation between K d and K ₒw of the different pesticides was proposed to help future management, modelling, and estimation of pollutant transfers during floods.

Macroscopic (germination and root growth) and microscopic (mitotic index, chromosome, and nuclear aberrations) analyses have been used to determine the toxicity of environmental pollutants. To better understand the molecular mechanisms of mutation and their effects, molecular markers offer a key perspective, as they measure the direct effects of DNA mutagenic agents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxic potential of the fungicides difenoconazole (DZ) and tebuconazole (TZ) on Allium cepa. A reduction was observed in the germination, root growth, and mitotic index at higher concentrations of DZ and TZ, compared to the negative control. In addition, high incidence of chromosome and nuclear aberrations was detected in treated roots. This demonstrates the genotoxic, cytotoxic, and phytotoxic effects of DZ and TZ on the root tips of A. cepa. Moreover, the molecular results indicate a change in the amplification profiles of the simple sequence repeats (SSR) and intersimple sequence repeats (ISSR) obtained from A. cepa after exposure to the tested compounds. Loss and gain of bands increased dose-dependently. Further, the grouping methods distinguished the higher concentrations from the negative control. The ISSR and SSR analyses proved to be efficient tools for evaluating DNA alterations caused by DZ and TZ. In association with macroscopic and microscopic analyses, they constitute an informative approach for environmental mutagen studies.

This study aims to determine the genetic correlation using nine microsatellite markers to reconstruct the history of some indigenous geese populations, along with the use of four single nucleotides polymorphisms (SNPs) to investigate their correlation with the geese body weight. Microsatellite markers are mainly used to provide updated information on changes in the population structure of geese breeds. The eight goose populations reported 24% private alleles specific for each population. Expected heterozygosity (He) ranged from 0.46 to 0.70. Three breeds were reported highly polymorphic. Inbreeding coefficient (Fis) revealed that three breeds were in a minimum level of extinction danger, while one breed was in a potential endangered situation. Phylogenetic tree, principal component analysis (PCA), and self-organizing map (SOM) were constructed using MATLAB to study the population distribution and relationship among these breeds. Four SNPs were detected, two SNPs at GH gene exon (C123T and C158T), and two SNPs at Pit-1 gene exons (G161A and T282G). Four SNP loci were reported to have a significant effect on geese body weight. They were CT genotype for C123T locus, TT genotype for C158T locus, GG genotype for G161A locus, and GG genotype for T282G locus.
