Assessing natural recovery from contaminants in a river using sediment chemistry and toxicity from different depth ranges 全文
2021
To determine whether natural recovery was occurring in a depositional area of the St. Marys River (Ontario, Canada) known as East Bellevue Marine Park (EBMP), sediment was collected from two depth ranges, 0–5 cm and 0–10 cm, and subjected to a series of laboratory toxicity tests and chemical analysis. Toxicological responses (survival, growth, reproduction, development) of four benthic invertebrates and the fathead minnow were compared at test vs. reference sites using univariate and multivariate (ordination) techniques. Temporal trends in sediment chemistry and invertebrate toxicity were examined with time series data from 2008 through to 2018. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; ≤ 37 mg/kg) and petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs; ≤ 6266 mg/kg) were elevated in EBMP compared to reference sites (PAHs, ≤ 1.6 mg/kg; PHCs ≤ 180 mg/kg). Comparatively, the 0–5 cm sediment layer had lower concentrations of all contaminants than the 0–10 cm layer at three of four test sites. Over time, contaminant concentrations have mostly remained stable or have decreased. There were no significant differences in survival, growth, or development of the larval fish in EBMP compared to the upstream reference sites, and no differences between sampling depths. However, most EBMP sediments were toxic to invertebrates, driven by reduced reproduction by the worm Tubifex and reduced survival by the amphipod Hyalella. Among habitat variables, a combination of different classes of compounds based on ordination scores (PHCs, oil and grease, metals) was most strongly correlated to toxicological response. There was little to no difference in toxicity between sampling depths based on integrated endpoint response; however, individual endpoints showed mostly greater toxicity from exposure to the 0–10 cm layer. Over time, toxicity has mostly remained stable or showed improvement. These results provided some positive indications that gradual natural recovery is occurring in EBMP.

Varol, Memet
The Keban Dam Reservoir, located on the Euphrates River, is the second largest reservoir of Turkey. Water quality of this reservoir is of great importance because it is widely used for recreation, aquaculture production, fishing, and irrigation. In this study, discriminant analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA) and cluster analysis (CA) were conducted to evaluate the seasonal and spatial variations in surface water quality of the reservoir. Also, total phosphorus (TP) content in sediments, water type and trophic status of the reservoir were determined. For this, 19 water quality variables and TP in sediments were monitored seasonally at 11 sampling stations on the reservoir during one year. Hierarchical CA classified 11 stations into three groups, i.e., upstream (moderate polluted), midstream (low polluted) and downstream (clean) regions. PCA/FA allowed to group the variables responsible for variations in water quality, which are mainly related to mineral dissolution (natural), organic matter and nutrients (anthropogenic), and physical parameters (natural). Discriminant analysis (DA) gave better results for both data reduction and spatio-temporal analysis. Stepwise temporal DA identified eight variables: water temperature (WT), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate nitrogen (NO₃–N), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), potassium (K⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), and calcium (Ca²⁺), which are the most significant variables responsible for temporal variations in water quality of the reservoir, while stepwise spatial DA identified three variables: K⁺, chloride (Cl⁻), and sulphate (SO₄⁻²), which are the most significant variables responsible for spatial variations. According to Ontario sediment-quality guidelines, sediments of the reservoir can be considered as unpolluted in terms of mean TP content. The water type of the reservoir was calcium-bicarbonate. According to trophic state index values based on TP and Chl-a, upstream region (moderate polluted) of the reservoir was in the eutrophic status, whereas other regions were in the mesotrophic status.

Mine tailings are found worldwide and can have significant impacts on ecosystem and human health. In this study, natural vegetation patterns on arsenical (As) gold (Au) mine tailings located in Sudbury, Ontario were assessed using transects located at the edge of the tailings and on the tailings. Vegetation communities were significantly different between the edge and open tailings areas of the site. Arsenic concentrations in both areas were extremely variable (from 285-17,567 mg/kg) but were not significantly correlated with vegetation diversity at the site. Nutrients (carbon (C), phosphorus (P)) and organic matter concentrations were associated with higher diversity and with the presence of climax vegetation on the tailings, but there were no significant relationships between tailings chemistry and vegetation indices on the edge. Encroachment onto the tailings from the edge occurred in conventional succession patterns, with a clear gradient from grasses (Agrostis gigantea) to trees such as Picea glauca. On the tailings, a nucleation pattern was visible, distinct from conventional succession. Trees and shrubs such as Betula papyrifera and Diervilla lonicera were associated with higher diversity and higher nutrient concentrations in the underlying tailings, whereas grasses such as A. gigantea were not. We concluded that at all areas of the site, vegetation - particularly trees - was facilitating amelioration of the underlying tailings. Despite high concentrations of As, nutrients appeared to have a greater influence than metals on vegetation diversity.

Eating fish provides numerous health benefits, but it is also a dominant pathway for human exposure to contaminants. Many studies have examined mercury (Hg) accumulation in fish, but fewer have considered other elements, such as arsenic (As) and chromium (Cr). Recently, freshwater fish from several pristine boreal systems across northern Ontario, Canada, have been reported with elevated concentrations of As and Cr for reasons that are not well understood. Our goal was to investigate the ecological and environmental influences over concentrations of As, Cr, and other elements in these fish to better understand what affects metal uptake and the risk to consumers. We measured 10 elements (including As, Cr, Hg) as well as carbon (δ¹³C), nitrogen (δ¹⁵N), and sulfur (δ³⁴S) stable isotopes in 388 fish from 25 lake and river sites across this remote region. These data were used to determine the effect of: 1) trophic ecology; and 2) watershed geology on piscine elemental content. Overall, most element concentrations were low, often below provincial advisory benchmarks (ABs). However, traces of Hg, As, Cr, and selenium (Se) were detected in most fish. Based on their exceedance of their respective ABs, the most restrictive elements on fish consumption in these boreal systems were Hg > As > Cr. Arsenic and Se, but not Cr concentrations were related to fish size and trophic ecology (inferred from δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N), suggesting bioaccumulation of the former elements. Fish with enriched δ³⁴S values, suggestive of anadromous behaviour, had marginally lower Hg but higher Se concentrations. Modeling results suggested a strong effect of site-specific factors, though we found weak trends between piscine elemental content and geological features (e.g., mafic intrusions), potentially due to the broad spatial scale of this study. Results from this study address gaps in our understanding of As and Cr bioaccumulation and will help to inform fish consumption guidelines.

The temporal and spatial trends in sediment of 22 poly- and perfluorinated (PFAS) compounds were investigated in the southern Great Lakes Erie and Ontario as well as Lake St. Clair. Surface concentrations measured by Ponar grab samples indicated a trend for greater concentrations near to urban sites. Mean concentrations ∑22PFAS were 15.6, 18.2 and 19 ng g−1 dm for Lakes St. Clair, Erie and Ontario, respectively. Perfluoro-n-butanoic acid (PFBA) and Perfluoro-n-hexanoic acid (PFHxA) were frequently determined in surface sediment and upper core samples indicating a shift in use patterns. Where PFBA was identified it was at relatively great concentrations typically >10 ng g−1 dm. However as PFBA and PFHxA are less likely to bind to sediment they may be indicative of pore water concentrations Sedimentation rates between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario differ greatly with greater rates observed in Lake Erie. In Lake Ontario, in general concentrations of PFAS observed in core samples closely follow the increase in use along with an observable change due to regulation implementation in the 1970s for water protection. However some of the more water soluble PFAS were observed in deeper core layers than the time of production could account for, indicating potential diffusion within the sediment. Given the greater sedimentation rates in Lake Erie, it was hoped to observe in greater resolution changes since the mid-1990s. However, though some decrease was observed at some locations the results are not clear. Many cores in Lake Erie had clearly observable gas voids, indicative of gas ebullition activity due to biogenic production, there were also observable mussel beds that could indicate mixing by bioturbation of core layers.

Exposure to air particulate matter (PM) is associated with increased cardiovascular morbimortality. However, PM doesn't affect equally to all people, being the old cohort the most susceptible and studied. We hypothesized that another specific life phase, the middle-aged subpopulation, may be negatively affected. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze in vivo the acute biological impact of two environmental particles, Urban Air Particles from Buenos Aires and Residual Oil Fly Ash, on the cardiorespiratory system of middle-aged mice, evaluating oxidative metabolism and inflammation. Both PM provoked a local and systemic inflammatory response, leading to a reduced alveolar area in the lung, an epicard inflammation in the heart, an increment of IL-6, and a reduction on PON 1 activity in serum of middle-aged animals. The positive correlation of local parameters with systemic markers of oxidative stress and inflammation could be responsible for associations of cardiovascular morbimortality in this subpopulation.

Struger, J. | Van Stempvoort, D.R. | Brown, S.J.
Correlation analysis suggests that occurrences of AMPA in streams of southern Ontario are linked mainly to glyphosate in both urban and rural settings, rather than to wastewater sources, as some previous studies have suggested. For this analysis the artificial sweetener acesulfame was analyzed as a wastewater indicator in surface water samples collected from urban and rural settings in southern Ontario, Canada. This interpretation is supported by the concurrence of seasonal fluctuations of glyphosate and AMPA concentrations. Herbicide applications in larger urban centres and along major transportation corridors appear to be important sources of glyphosate and AMPA in surface water, in addition to uses of this herbicide in rural and mixed use areas. Fluctuations in concentrations of acesulfame and glyphosate residues were found to be related to hydrologic events.

2014
Watmough, Shaun A. | McDonough, Andrew M. | Raney, Shanel M.
Highways are major sources of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ammonia (NH3). In this study, springtime NO2 and NH3 concentrations were measured at 17 Ontario Forest Biomonitoring Network (OFBN) plots using passive samplers. Average springtime NO2 concentrations were between 1.3 μg m−3 and 27 μg m−3, and NH3 concentrations were between 0.2 μg m−3 and 1.7 μg m−3, although concentrations measured in May (before leaf out) were typically twice as high as values recorded in June. Average NO2 concentrations, and to a lesser extent NH3, could be predicted by road density at all radii (around the plot) tested (500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m). Springtime NO2 concentrations were predicted for a further 50 OFBN sites. Normalized plant/lichen N concentrations were positively correlated with estimated springtime NO2 and NH3 concentrations. Epiphytic foliose lichen richness decreased with increasing NO2 and NH3, but vascular plant richness was positively related to estimated springtime NO2 and NH3.
