Analysis of glyphosate degradation in a soil microcosm 全文
2018
la Cecilia, Daniele | Maggi, Federico
Glyphosate (GLP) herbicide leaching into soil can undergo abiotic degradation and two enzymatic oxidative or hydrolytic reactions in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions; biotic oxidation produces aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). Both GLP and AMPA are phytotoxic. A comprehensive GLP degradation reaction network was developed from the literature to account for the above pathways, and fifteen experimental data sets were used to determine the corresponding Michaelis-Menten-Monod (MMM) kinetic parameters. Various sensitivity analyses were designed to assess GLP and AMPA degradation potential against O2 (aq) and carbon (C) availability, pH, and birnessite mineral content, and showed that bacteria oxidized or hydrolyzed up to 98% of GLP and only 9% of AMPA. Lack of a C source limited the GLP cometabolic hydrolytic pathways, which produces non-toxic byproducts and promotes AMPA biodegradation. Low bacterial activity in O2 (aq)-limited conditions or non-neutral pH resulted in GLP accumulation. Birnessite mineral catalyzed fast GLP and AMPA chemodegradation reaching alone efficiencies of 79% and 88%, respectively, regardless of the other variables and produced non-toxic byproducts. Overall, O2 (aq) and birnessite availability played the major roles in determining the partitioning of GLP and its byproducts mass fluxes across the reaction network, while birnessite, C availability, and pH affected GLP and AMPA biodegradation effectiveness.

Lei, Cheng | Sun, Yuqing | Tsang, Daniel C.W. | Lin, Daohui
The increasing application of iron-based nanoparticles (NPs), especially high concentrations of zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI), has raised concerns regarding their environmental behavior and potential ecological effects. In the environment, iron-based NPs undergo physical, chemical, and/or biological transformations as influenced by environmental factors such as pH, ions, dissolved oxygen, natural organic matter (NOM), and biotas. This review presents recent research advances on environmental transformations of iron-based NPs, and articulates their relationships with the observed toxicities. The type and extent of physical, chemical, and biological transformations, including aggregation, oxidation, and bio-reduction, depend on the properties of NPs and the receiving environment. Toxicities of iron-based NPs to bacteria, algae, fish, and plants are increasingly observed, which are evaluated with a particular focus on the underlying mechanisms. The toxicity of iron-based NPs is a function of their properties, tolerance of test organisms, and environmental conditions. Oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species is considered as the primary toxic mechanism of iron-based NPs. Factors influencing the toxicity of iron-based NPs are addressed and environmental transformations play a significant role, for example, surface oxidation or coating by NOM generally lowers the toxicity of nZVI. Research gaps and future directions are suggested with an aim to boost concerted research efforts on environmental transformations and toxicity of iron-based NPs, e.g., toxicity studies of transformed NPs in field, expansion of toxicity endpoints, and roles of laden contaminants and surface coating. This review will enhance our understanding of potential risks of iron-based NPs and proper uses of environmentally benign NPs.

By identifying the main sources of nitrate (NO3−) can obtain useful information to support the management of NO3− pollution, particularly in subtropical catchments with shallow drinking water wells. This study used water chemistry and dual stable isotopes δ15N and δ18O methods to assess seasonal and spatial variations of NO3− in precipitation, surface water, and groundwater in an agricultural and forest subtropical catchment in Jiangxi Province, China. The maximum concentrations of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3−-N) and ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) were 10.4 and 10.8 mg L−1in samples collected from 221 rainfall events from 2011 to 2013. About 4.4% and 12.3% NH4+-N concentrations of surface water and groundwater exceeded the thresholds of 1.0 and 0.2 mg L−1. The NO3−-N concentrations in surface water were closely correlated with NH4+-N concentrations in surface water and groundwater (r = −0.71 and r = −0.71, P < 0.05). The concentrations of NH4+-N and NO3−-N were significantly higher in a fishery pond and nearby drinking wells than in other monitoring points. Annual exports of NO3−-N and NH4+-N were 4.06 × 104 and 8.14 × 103 kg yr−1, respectively and NO3−-N is the main form of N loss. The δ15N values ranged from 0‰ to 20‰ in surface water and groundwater, and the δ18O values ranged from 0‰ to 15‰ and 1‰–13‰, respectively. Dual stable isotope natural abundance distribution and water chemistry [NO3−]/[Cl−] molar ratio information suggested that manure and sewage and soil N were the main sources of NO3− in surface water and manure and sewage in groundwater in summer and winter. In spring, water occurred denitrification and ammonium fertilizer, manure and sewage were the main sources of NO3− in surface water and groundwater which sampling points were closer residential area and fish ponds than paddy field and local farmers used more Manure. Manure applications should be reasonable around drinking water wells to protect the drinking water quality.

Recent studies suggest that exposure to air pollution might be associated with severity of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). However, the association between air pollution exposure, especially particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters <= 2.5 μm (PM₂.₅), and SDB is still unclear. We collected 4312 participants' data from the Taipei Medical University Hospital's Sleep Center and air pollution data from the Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration. Associations of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters <=10 μm (PM₁₀), PM₂.₅, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), ozone (O₃) and sulfur dioxide (SO₂) with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and oxygen desaturation index (ODI) were investigated by generalized additive models. We found that an interquartile range (IQR) increase in 1-year mean PM₂.₅ (3.4 μg/m³) and NO₂ (2.7 ppb) was associated with a 4.7% and 3.6% increase in AHI, respectively. We also observed the association of an IQR increase in 1-year mean PM₂.₅ with a 2.5% increase in ODI. The similar pattern was found in the association of daily mean PM₂.₅ exposure with increased AHI. Moreover, participants showed significant AHI and ODI responses to air pollution levels in spring and winter. We concluded that exposure to PM₂.₅ was associated with SDB. Effects of air pollution on AHI and ODI were significant in spring and winter.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria are a threat to human life. Recently, sewers have been identified as potential reservoirs. The intermittent injection of sewage into adjacent surface waters is inevitable, due to capacity limitations of the urban drainage system. Information regarding the effect to natural freshwater biofilms (NFB) due to the intermittent contaminations are scarce. Therefore, a fundamental screening is necessary. In April, we placed NFB-attachment constructions in a brook upstream and downstream from urban drainage overflow constructions. In meanwhile two sampling campaigns were conducted. The sewage and the brook water were collected to gather information about antibiotic background exposure of ciprofloxacin (CIP), clarithromycin (CLA) and doxycycline (DOX). Six months later we experimentally determined the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) of the NFB-communities after a 24 h lasting exposure with additionally dosed antibiotics. Concentrations of 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 mg L⁻¹ were selected. CIP, CLA and DOX were individually dosed, and also in mixtures. The mean antibiotic background concentration in sewage was in a range of 575.5–1289.1 ng L⁻¹, which mainly exceeded the concentrations published in literature. The determined mean concentration in the brook was in a range of 4.6–539.0 ng L⁻¹. The first significant inhibition of the OUR with individually dosed antibiotics started mainly at a concentration of 1.0 mg L⁻¹. Antibiotics in a mixture with concentrations of 0.1 and 1.0 mg L⁻¹ were as effective as single dosed antibiotics with a concentration of 10.0 mg L⁻¹. The increased antibiotic tolerance and resistance of NFB-communities downstream of the combined sewer overflow (CSO) structure was a consequence of a severe impact due to urban drainage overflows. Hence, NFB-communities downstream of CSO-constructions are hot spots of antibiotic tolerant and resistant subpopulations and access restrictions should be announced, if an infection risk is present.

This study presents the results of field experiments that were designed to investigate the photophysiological characteristics of microphytobenthos (MPB) and to estimate primary production (PP) in Daebu mudflat, which is located at the west coast of Korea. A typical seasonal (or monthly) fluctuation of intertidal MPB PP was found in association with biotic (benthic Chl-a) and/or abiotic parameters (irradiance and temperature) over a period of three years. From a series of field-laboratory experiments using the oxygen micro-profiling method (totaling 28 surveys), three consistent phenomena were observed: 1) winter to early spring algal blooms, 2) seasonal changes in Q10, and 3) temperature dependent MPB photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I). In particular, both the chlorophyll-specific maximum photosynthetic capacity (Pbmax) and the saturated light intensity (Ik), derived from 126 P-I curves (1870 data sets of oxygen micro-profiling in the sediment), were significantly correlated with sediment temperature (p < 0.01). To develop an empirical MPB PP model, the relationships between P-I parameters and environmental variables were parameterized following established exponential forms (e.g., Q10). It was possible to estimate the MPB PP in Daebu mudflat area by using easily accessible explanatory factor, suitable to be used for future explorations of parameters such as sediment temperature, irradiance, chlorophyll concentration, and tidal height. The estimated annual MPB PP based on the empirical PP model were found to be greater than that in the Wadden Sea and average annual PP in the temperate zones of the world. Authors believe that the present approach of the MPB PP estimation could be combined with remote-sensing techniques (e.g., satellites) to support coastal ecosystem management.

Decomposition of aquatic macrophytes usually generates significant influence on aquatic environment. Study on the aquatic macrophytes decomposition may help reusing the aquatic macrophytes litters, as well as controlling the water pollution caused by the decomposition process. This study verified that the decomposition processes of three different kinds of aquatic macrophytes (water hyacinth, hydrilla and cattail) could exert significant influences on water quality of the receiving water, including the change extent of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), the contents of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, etc. The influence of decomposition on water quality and the concentrations of the released chemical materials both followed the order of water hyacinth > hydrilla > cattail. Greater influence was obtained with higher dosage of plant litter addition. The influence also varied with sediment addition. Moreover, nitrogen released from the decomposition of water hyacinth and hydrilla were mainly NH3-N and organic nitrogen while those from cattail litter included organic nitrogen and NO3⁻-N. After the decomposition, the average carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) in the receiving water was about 2.6 (water hyacinth), 5.3 (hydrilla) and 20.3 (cattail). Therefore, cattail litter might be a potential plant carbon source for denitrification in ecological system of a constructed wetland.

Acid rain is one of the severest environmental issues globally. Relative to other global changes (e.g., warming, elevated atmospheric [CO2], and nitrogen deposition), however, acid rain has received less attention than its due. Soil fauna play important roles in multiple ecological processes, but how soil fauna community responds to acid rain remains less studied. This microcosm experiment was conducted using latosol with simulated acid rain (SAR) manipulations to observe potential changes in soil fauna community under acid rain stress. Four pH levels, i.e., pH 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, and 5.5, and a neutral control of pH 7.0 were set according to the current pH condition and acidification trend of precipitation in southern China. As expected, we observed that the SAR treatments induced changes in soil fauna community composition and their ecological niches in the tested soil; the treatment effects tended to increase as acidity increased. This could be attributable to the environmental stresses (such as acidity, porosity and oxygen supply) induced by the SAR treatments. In addition to direct acidity effect, we propose that potential changes in permeability and movability of water and oxygen in soils induced by acid rain could also give rise to the observed shifts in soil fauna community composition. These are most likely indirect pathways of acid rain to affect belowground community. Moreover, we found that nematodes, the dominating soil fauna group in this study, moved downwards to mitigate the stress of acid rain. This is probably detrimental to soil fauna in the long term, due to the relatively severer soil conditions in the deep than surface soil layer. Our results suggest that acid rain could change soil fauna community and the vertical distribution of soil fauna groups, consequently changing the underground ecosystem functions such as organic matter decomposition and greenhouse gas emissions.

2017
Fitzgerald, Jennifer A. | Katsiadaki, Ioanna | Santos, Eduarda M.
Hypoxia is a global problem in aquatic systems and often co-occurs with pollutants. Despite this, little is known about the combined effects of these stressors on aquatic organisms. The objective of this study was to investigate the combined effects of hypoxia and copper, a toxic metal widespread in the aquatic environment. We used the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) as a model because of its environmental relevance and amenability for environmental toxicology studies. We focused on embryonic development as this is considered to be a sensitive life stage to environmental pollution. We first investigated the effects of hypoxia alone on stickleback development to generate the information required to design subsequent studies. Our data showed that exposure to low oxygen concentrations (24.7 ± 0.9% air saturation; AS) resulted in strong developmental delays and increased mortalities, whereas a small decrease in oxygen (75.0 ± 0.5%AS) resulted in premature hatching. Stickleback embryos were then exposed to a range of copper concentrations under hypoxia (56.1 ± 0.2%AS) or normoxia (97.6 ± 0.1%AS), continuously, from fertilisation to free swimming larvae. Hypoxia caused significant changes in copper toxicity throughout embryonic development. Prior to hatching, hypoxia suppressed the occurrence of mortalities, but after hatching hypoxia significantly increased copper toxicity. Interestingly, when exposures were conducted only after hatching, the onset of copper-induced mortalities was delayed under hypoxia compared to normoxia, but after 48 h, copper was more toxic to hatched embryos under hypoxia. This is the second species for which the protective effect of hypoxia on copper toxicity prior to hatching, followed by its exacerbating effect after hatching is demonstrated, suggesting the hypothesis that this pattern may be common for teleost species. Our research highlights the importance of considering the interactions between multiple stressors, as understanding these interactions is essential to facilitate the accurate prediction of the consequences of exposure to complex stressors in a rapidly changing environment.

2017
Zhang, Guoyang | Wu, Bingdang | Zhang, Shujuan
Acetylacetone (AcAc) has proven to be a potent photo-activator in the degradation of color compounds. The effects of AcAc on the photochemical conversion of five colorless pharmaceuticals were for the first time investigated in both pure and natural waters with the UV/H2O2 process as a reference. In most cases, AcAc played a similar role to H2O2. For example, AcAc accelerated the photodecomposition of carbamazepine, oxytetracycline, and tetracycline in pure water. Meanwhile, the toxicity of tetracyclines and carbamazepine were reduced to a similar extent to that in the UV/H2O2 process. However, AcAc worked in a way different from that of H2O2. Based on the degradation kinetics, solvent kinetic isotope effect, and the inhibiting effect of O2, the underlying mechanisms for the degradation of pharmaceuticals in the UV/AcAc process were believed mainly to be direct energy transfer from excited AcAc to pharmaceuticals rather than reactive oxygen species-mediated reactions. In natural waters, dissolved organic matter (DOM) played a crucial role in the photoconversion of pharmaceuticals. The role of H2O2 became negligible due to the scavenging effects of DOM and inorganic ions. Interestingly, in natural waters, AcAc first accelerated the photodecomposition of pharmaceuticals and then led to a dramatic reduction with the depletion of dissolved oxygen. Considering the natural occurrence of diketones, the results here point out a possible pathway in the fate and transport of pharmaceuticals in aquatic ecosystems.
