Biomagnetic monitoring of urban tree leaves has proven to be a good estimator of ambient particulate matter. We evaluated its relevancy by determining leaf area normalised weight (mg m−2) and SIRM (A) of leaf-deposited particles within three different size fractions (>10 μm, 3–10 μm and 0.2–3 μm) and the SIRM of the leaf-encapsulated particles. Results showed that throughout the in-leaf season, the trees accumulated on average 747 mg m−2 of dust on their leaves, of which 74 mg m−2 was within the 0.2–10 μm (∼PM10) size range and 40 mg m−2 within the 0.2–3 μm (∼PM3) size range. A significant correlation between the SIRM and weight of the surface-deposited particles confirms the potential of biomagnetic monitoring as a proxy for the amount of leaf-deposited particles. Spatial variation of both SIRM and weight throughout the street canyon suggests traffic and wind as key factors for respectively the source and distribution of urban particulates.

This study aims to investigate effects of freshwater components in order to predict agglomeration behavior of silver nanoparticles coated with citrate (AgNP-Cit), polyvinylpyrrolidone (AgNP-PVP), and of TiO2 nanoparticles. Agglomeration studies were conducted in various media based on combinations of ions, natural organic matter (humic, fulvic acid) and surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate, alkyl ethoxylate), at a constant ionic strength of 10 mM over time for up to 1 week. Agglomeration level of AgNP-Cit and TiO2 was mostly dependent on the concentration of Ca2+ in media, and their size strongly increased to micrometer scale over 1 week. However, AgNP-Cit and TiO2 were stabilized to particle size around 500 nm in the presence of NOM, surfactants and carbonate over 1 week. AgNP-PVP maintained their original size in all media except in the presence of Mg2+ ions which led to significant agglomeration. Behavior of these engineered nanoparticles was similar in a natural freshwater medium.

Despite common knowledge that the metal content adsorbed by fine particles is relatively higher compared to coarser particles, the reasons for this phenomenon have gained little research attention. The research study discussed in the paper investigated the variations in metal content for different particle sizes of solids associated with pollutant build-up on urban road surfaces. Data analysis confirmed that parameters favourable for metal adsorption to solids such as specific surface area, organic carbon content, effective cation exchange capacity and clay forming minerals content decrease with the increase in particle size. Furthermore, the mineralogical composition of solids was found to be the governing factor influencing the specific surface area and effective cation exchange capacity. There is high quartz content in particles >150 μm compared to particles <150 μm. As particle size reduces below 150 μm, the clay forming minerals content increases, providing favourable physical and chemical properties that influence adsorption.

Zebrafish embryotoxicity and dioxin-like activity levels were tested for particulate air samples from an urban background site in Barcelona (Spain). Samples were collected during 14 months, and maximal values for both biological activities corresponded to samples collected during late autumn months, correlating with elevated PAH levels. Vehicle and combustion emissions appeared as the potentially most toxic sources, whereas total PM mass and mineral content appeared to be poor predictors of the biological activity of the samples. Samples simultaneously collected at different particle size cut-offs (10, 2.5, and 1 μm) did not differ significantly in dioxin-like PAH levels and biological activity, indicating that the sub-micron particle fraction (PM1) concentrated essentially all observed toxicity. Our results support the need for a tighter control on sub-micron particle emissions and show that total PM mass and, particularly, PM10, may not fully characterize the toxic potential of air samples.

Surface transformation can affect the stability, reactivity, and toxicity of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) in water environments. Herein, we investigated the release kinetics of Si impurity frequently introduced during NP synthesis and the resulting effect on TiO2 NP transformation in aqueous solutions. The release of Si increased from 2 h to 19 d at three pHs with the order: pH 11.2 ≥ pH 2.4 > pH 8.2. The Si release process followed parabolic kinetics which is similar to diffusion controlled dissolution of minerals, and the release magnitude followed the order: 10 × 40 nm rutile > 50 nm anatase > 30 × 40 nm rutile. FTIR data indicated preferential dissolving of less polymerized Si species on NP surface. Surface potential and particle size of TiO2 NPs remained almost constant during the 42-day monitoring, implying the unaffected stability and transport of these NPs by the incongruent dissolution of impurities.

Transport of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in soil/sediment matrixes can regulate their potential eco-effects and has been however rarely studied. Herein, column experiments were conducted to investigate mobility of CNT suspensions stabilized by dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid sodium salt (SDBS), octyl-phenol-ethoxylate (TX-100) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) in four soil samples with certain particle sizes. Humic acid was extracted from a soil sample and was coated on quartz sands to explore the effect of soil organic matter (SOM) on the mobility. Results showed that the positively-charged CPC-CNT was entirely retained in the columns while the negatively-charged SDBS-CNT and TX-100-CNT more or less broke through the columns. Pearson correlation analyses revealed that soil texture rather than SOM controlled the mobility. Electrostatic attraction to and/or precipitation on the grain surfaces together with the straining effect could explain the CNT retention. These novel results will help to understand the eco-effects of CNTs.

This is the first study to describe distribution and speciation of Hg in coastal sediments from the central east coast of India. The concentrations of Hg in the studied sediments were found to be much lower than the Hg concentration recommended in coastal sediments by the United State Environmental Protection Agency and the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment for the protection of aquatic life. This study suggests that the interactions between Hg and coastal sediments are influenced by particle size (sand, silt and clay) of the sediments and the total organic carbon (TOC) content in the sediments. It was found that the coastal sediments from the central east coast of India could act as a sink for Hg. The availability of strong uncomplexed-Hg binding sites in the coastal sediments was observed.

A chassis dynamometer study was conducted to compare the characteristics of particle emissions from a port fuel injection (PFI) and a gasoline direct injection (GDI) car, both of which comply with Euro 4 exhaust emission standards. Experiments were carried out over the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), the ECE–15 segments, the period from 0 to 49 s within the NEDC procedure (FSE) and the Extra Urban Driving Cycle segment. Exhaust particles were characterized in terms of the particle number, surface area, volume and size distributions between 30nm and 1μm. Under the NEDC, the GDI car had particle emissions weighted by particle number, surface area and volume that were 56–2 739% higher than the emissions from the PFI car in the range of particle size measured, and the particle number, volume and surface area emissions per km for the GDI car are respectively 5.3, 9.0 and 14.6 times higher than those for the PFI car. Among the testing conditions employed, the highest concentrations of average particle number, surface area and volume were found in the FSE, and the particle number, surface area and volume for the GDI car were respectively 9.5, 33.2 and 39.8 times higher than those for the PFI car. Moreover, the peak of the particle size distributions for the PFI car was toward a smaller size, while that for the GDI was toward a larger size, indicating that particles emitted by the PFI car are much smaller than those emitted by the GDI car.

Atmospheric nucleation is now recognized to be an important source of ambient particles. In this study, ground–based measurements using a tower were used to observe new particle formation in the Morgan Monroe State Forest (MMSF) in Southwestern Indiana in May 2008. Nucleation was observed at MMSF on a number of days through examination of the particle size distributions. Most of these events were nucleation and growth events that are typical of regional nucleation phenomena. The particle size and sulfuric acid concentration data were used to investigate the mechanism for the observed nucleation events. Four of the ten observed nucleation events were clearly the result of activation of pre–existing clusters. The others seem likely to be the result of classical ternary nucleation.
