Incomplete combustion processes in diesel engines produce particulate matter (PM) that significantly contributes to air pollution. Currently, there remains a knowledge gap in relation to the physical and chemical characteristics and also the biological reactivity of the PM emitted from old- and new-generation diesel vehicles. In this study, the emissions from a Euro 3 diesel vehicle were compared to those from a Euro 6 car during the regeneration of a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Different driving cycles were used to collect two types of diesel exhaust particles (DEPs). The particle size distribution was monitored using an engine exhaust particle sizer spectrometer and an electrical low-pressure impactor. Although the Euro 6 vehicle emitted particulates only during DPF regeneration that primarily occurs for a few minutes at high speeds, such emissions are characterized by a higher number of ultrafine particles (<0.1 μm) compared to those from the Euro 3 diesel vehicle. The emitted particles possess different characteristics. For example, Euro 6 DEPs exhibit a lower PAH content than do Euro 3 samples; however, they are enriched in metals that were poorly detected or undetected in Euro 3 emissions. The biological effects of the two DEPs were investigated in human bronchial BEAS-2B cells exposed to 50 μg/mL of PM (corresponding to 5.2 μg/cm²), and the results revealed that Euro 3 DEPs activated the typical inflammatory and pro-carcinogenic pathways induced by combustion-derived particles, while Euro 6 DEPs were less effective in regard to activating such biological responses. Although further investigations are required, it is evident that the different in vitro effects elicited by Euro 3 and Euro 6 DEPs can be correlated with the variable chemical compositions (metals and PAHs) of the emitted particles that play a pivotal role in the inflammatory and carcinogenic potential of airborne PM.

Recently, increasing attention has been paid to antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in urban stormwater runoff. However, there were little data on the diversity and distribution of ARGs associated with road sediments transported in runoff. The investigation of ARGs diversity showed that sulfonamide resistance genes (sul2 and sul3) occupied 61.7%–82.3% of total ARGs in runoff. The analysis of ARGs distribution in particulate matter (PM) implied that both tetQ and trbC existed mainly in PM with size of 150–300 μm, but other ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were dominant in PM with size <75 μm. The discussion of potential hosts indicated that target genes (ermF, blaOXA1/blaOXA30, ermC, qnrA, sul2, tnpA-01, intI2, tetW, intI1, sul3, trbC) had the strongest subordinate relationship with Proteobacteria at phylum level and Enterobacter at genus level. The effect evaluation of ARGs distribution suggested that 13 kinds of ARGs were positively correlated with Pr/PS and Zeta potential, resulting in the more ARGs in PM with smaller size (<75 μm).

Filters installed in the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems can serve as air-cleaning and sampling devices for indoor particles. The purpose of this article is to evaluate these dual roles. An occupied home with a central HVAC system equipped with a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV, from ASHRAE Standard 52.2) 11 filter was monitored for six weeks. Weekly airborne gravimetric and real-time sampling was performed to measure the particle size distribution and the concentration of total suspended particles (TSP), PM₁₀, PM₂.₅, PM₁, and 12 trace metals. The weekly system runtimes were intentionally changed to provide a wide range of weekly filtration volumes. The quantitative filter forensics (QFF) concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and trace metals were calculated using the analysis of the dust collected on the HVAC filter, the filtration volume, and filter in-situ efficiency. The results indicated that filtration was not influential to remove PM and trace metals as the concentrations during the weeks with continuous HVAC operation were not consistently lower than those during the other weeks. This suggests the dominance of other particle and trace metal source and loss mechanisms weakens the influence of filtration in this home. The QFF evaluation results indicated that the concentration of TSP and over half of the tested trace metals (e.g., Pb, Cd, Ni, V, Sb, K, and Sr) could be estimated by QFF within a factor of two when compared to airborne sampling results. PM₁₀, PM₂.₅, and PM₁ concentrations were significantly underestimated by QFF potentially due to the limitations of size distribution analysis by a laser diffraction particle sizer (LDPS) for the detection of <1 μm particles. Overall, while QFF was promising for TSP and some trace metals, improvement in size distribution analysis could extend the application of QFF for airborne sampling.

Atmospheric halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Halo-PAHs) and parent PAHs were monitored in Ulsan, South Korea for one year (January‒December 2015) to investigate their seasonal patterns, gas/particle partitioning behavior, and the impact of meteorological conditions. The mean concentrations of 24 chlorinated PAHs, 11 brominated PAHs, and 13 parent PAHs in the gaseous and particulate phases were 8.64 and 9.64 pg/m³, 11.6 and 1.62 pg/m³, and 2.17 and 2.40 ng/m³, respectively. Winter had the highest ClPAH and PAH levels, with significant contributions from poly-chlorine groups and high-molecular-weight compounds. However, BrPAHs showed reverse patterns with the highest concentration in summer and the dominant gaseous fraction throughout the year. This finding could be explained by the strong local sources of BrPAHs, related to automobile and petrochemical industries. In contrast, the effects of the temperature inversion layer and atmospheric transport from the outside of Ulsan were more apparent for ClPAHs and PAHs, particularly in winter and spring. Regarding gas/particle partitioning, Halo-PAHs exhibited different seasonal behaviors from those of parent PAHs. The sorption pathway of Halo-PAHs seemed to shift from absorption as the sole dominant mechanism in winter and spring to both adsorption and absorption in summer and fall, while both partitioning mechanisms contributed equally for parent PAHs during the entire year. This study implies that Halo-PAHs and parent PAHs might not share the same atmospheric behavior, possibly due to different characteristics in atmospheric reactions with other chemicals and particle-size distribution. However, there have been limited studies about the formation of Halo-PAHs and their physicochemical properties; hence, further in-depth investigations are of vital importance.

The adverse health effects of haze and particle-bound contaminants in China have recently caused increasing concern, and particle size plays a significant role in affecting human exposure to haze-correlated pollutants. To this background, size-segregated particulate samples (nine size fractions (<0.4, 0.4–0.7, 0.7–1.1, 1.1–2.1, 2.1–3.3, 3.3–4.7, 4.7–5.8, 5.8–9.0 and > 9.0 μm) were collected in three scale-gradient cities in northern China and analysed for a series of parent, oxygenated and chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, O-PAHs and Cl-PAHs). The total geometric mean concentrations of PAHs and O-PAHs for Beijing, Zhengzhou and Xinxiang were 98.1 and 27.2, 77.9 and 77.5, 41.0 and 30.7 ng m⁻³, respectively, which were 50–200 times higher than those for Cl-PAHs (0.5, 0.7 and 0.4 ng m⁻³). Though unimodal size-distribution patterns were found for all these contaminants for these three cities, PAHs represented distinctly higher concentration levels around the peak fraction (0.7–2.1 μm) than O-PAHs and Cl-PAHs. With 4–6 ring PAHs as dominant components in all samples, the percentage proportion of 2–3 ring PAHs (ranging from 1% to 26%) generally increased with particle size increasing, implying the sources of these compounds varied little among the 9 size fractions in all three cities. The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) model and permeability coefficient method were synchronously applied to the size-segregated data for inhalation and dermal exposure assessment to intensively estimate the human exposure doses to airborne PAHs. Further, the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) was calculated and it’s found that ILCR from inhalation was higher than that from dermal uptake for children and adults in Beijing and Zhengzhou, while the ILCR for Xinxiang presented a contrary pattern, revealing dermal uptake to be an equally significant exposure pathway to airborne PAHs compared to inhalation.

This study employs the grain size distributions and the concentrations and isotopic compositions of Sr, Nd, and Pb in the precipitation samples collected from the Laohugou Glacier (LHG) in northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) during August 2014–2015 to investigate seasonal variability in the insoluble precipitation particle sources. Fine dust particle (0.57–27 μm) depositions dominated in autumn and winter, whereas both fine and coarse dust particle (27–100 μm) depositions were found in spring and summer. Furthermore, the concentrations of Sr, Nd, and Pb also varied seasonally—the highest and lowest Sr and Nd concentrations were recorded in spring and autumn, respectively, whereas the highest and lowest Pb concentrations were recorded in winter and summer, respectively. The Sr and Nd isotopes revealed that the dust in the winter precipitation originated predominately from the Taklimakan Desert and that in spring originated from the Badain Jaran and Qaidam deserts. The precipitation residues in summer were derived from a complex mixture of dust sources from the Gobi and other large deserts in northwest China. Autumn residues were predominately sourced from local soil near the LHG as well as from the Qaidam Basin and the northern TP surface soil. The Taklimakan, long suspected as a major source of long-range transported dust, was an insignificant contributor to the precipitation over LHG during spring, summer, and autumn. Further, the Pb isotopic ratios indicated a primary impact of anthropogenic pollutants for most part of the year (except spring). Meteorological data and the MODIS AOD model are in good agreement with the results from the analyses of the Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopes for the LHG particle source, and further clarify the source regions. Thus, this study thus provides new evidence on the seasonal variability of the sources of the residual particles in remote glaciers in Central Asia.

Poultry-emitted air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM) and ammonia, have raised concerns due to potential negative effects on human health and the environment. However, developing and optimizing remediation technologies requires a better understanding of air pollutant concentrations, the emission plumes, and the relationships between the pollutants. Therefore, we conducted ten field experiments to characterize PM (total suspended particulate [TSP], particulate matter less than 10 μm in aerodynamic diameter [PM10], and particulate matter less than 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter [PM2.5]) and ammonia emission-concentration profiles from a typical commercial poultry house. The emission factors of the poultry house, which were calculated using the concentrations and fan speed, were 0.66 (0.29–0.99) g NH3-N bird−1d−1 for ammonia, 52 (44–168) g d−1AU−1 (AU = animal unit = 500 kg) for TSP, 3.48 (1.16–9.03) g d−1AU−1 for PM10, and 0.07 (0.00–0.36) g d−1AU−1 for PM2.5. PM and ammonia emission concentrations decreased as distance from the fan increased. Although emission concentrations were similar in the daytime and nighttime, diurnal and nocturnal plume shapes were different due to the increased stability of the atmosphere at night. Particle size distribution analysis revealed that, at a given height, the percentage of PM10 and PM2.5 was consistent throughout the plume, indicating that the larger particles were not settling out of the airstream faster than the smaller particles. Overall, the direction of the measured air pollutant emission plumes was dominated by the tunnel fan ventilation airflow rate and direction instead of the ambient wind speed and direction. This is important because currently-available air dispersion models use ambient or modeled wind speed and direction as input parameters. Thus, results will be useful in evaluating dispersion models for ground-level, horizontally-released, point sources and in developing effective pollutant remediation strategies for emissions.

The partitioning behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) between gaseous and particulate phases from coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) is critically important to predict PAH removal by dust control devices. In this study, 16 US-EPA priority PAHs in gaseous and size-segregated particulate phases at the inlet and outlet of the fabric filter unit (FFs) of a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler were analyzed. The partitioning mechanisms of PAHs between gaseous and particulate phases and in particles of different size classes were investigated. We found that the removal efficiencies of PAHs are 45.59% and 70.67–89.06% for gaseous and particulate phases, respectively. The gaseous phase mainly contains low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs (2- and 3-ring PAHs), which is quite different from the particulate phase that mainly contains medium and high molecular weight (MMW and HMW) PAHs (4- to 6-ring PAHs). The fractions of LMW PAHs show a declining trend with the decrease of particle size. The gas-particle partitioning of PAHs is primarily controlled by organic carbon absorption, in addition, it has a clear dependence on the particle sizes. Plot of log (TPAH/PM) against logDp shows that all slope values were below −1, suggesting that PAHs were mainly adsorbed to particulates. The adsorption effect of PAHs in size-segregated PMs for HMW PAHs is more evident than LMW PAHs. The particle size distributions (PSDs) of individual PAHs show that most of PAHs exhibit bi-model structures, with one mode peaking in the accumulation size range (2.1–1.1 μm) and another mode peaking in coarse size range (5.8–4.7 μm). The intensities of these two peaks vary in function of ring number of PAHs, which is likely attributed to Kelvin effect that the less volatile HMW PAH species preferentially condense onto the finer particulates. The emission factor of PAHs was calculated as 3.53 mg/kg of coal burned, with overall mean EFPAH of 0.55 and 2.98 mg/kg for gaseous and particulate phase, respectively. Moreover, the average emission amount of PAHs for the investigated CFPP was 1016.6 g/day and 371073.6 g/y, respectively.

While the crushing of concrete gives rise to large quantities of coarse dust, it is not widely recognized that this process also emits significant quantities of ultrafine particles. These particles impact not just the environments within construction activities but those in entire urban areas. The origin of these ultrafine particles is uncertain, as existing theories do not support their production by mechanical processes. We propose a hypothesis for this observation based on the volatilisation of materials at the concrete fracture interface. The results from this study confirm that mechanical methods can produce ultrafine particles (UFP) from concrete, and that the particles are volatile. The ultrafine mode was only observed during concrete fracture, producing particle size distributions with average count median diameters of 27, 39 and 49 nm for the three tested concrete samples. Further volatility measurements found that the particles were highly volatile, showing between 60 and 95% reduction in the volume fraction remaining by 125 °C. An analysis of the volatile fraction remaining found that different volatile material is responsible for the production of particles between the samples.

Exposure of young children to toxic metals in urban environments is largely due to soil and dust ingestion. Soil particle size distribution and concentrations of toxic metals in different particle sizes are important risk factors in addition to bioaccessibility of these metals in the particles. Analysis of particle size distribution and metals concentrations for 13 soils, 12 sampled from urban gardens and 1 from orchard found that fine particles (<105 μm) comprised from 22 to 66% by weight of the tested soils, with Ba, Cu, Pb and Zn generally at higher concentrations in the finer particles. However, metal bioaccessibility was generally lower in finer particles, a trend most pronounced for Ba and Pb. Gastric was higher than gastrointestinal bioaccessibility for all metals except Cu. The lower bioaccessibility of Pb in urban garden soils compared to orchard soil is attributable to the higher organic matter content of the garden soils.
