To protect forest cultures against browsing, chemical repellents can be used. With their applications, however, a problem arises with disruption of biological and chemical equilibria in the environment (e.g., soil-plant system). The aim of this study were to assess possible interactions of repellents, denatonium benzoate (DB), and capsaicin (Cps), with the soil matrix, especially the impact of their addition on the mobility of individual micronutrients and macronutrients, such as calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and zinc, and to verify the hypothesis that the presence of repellent compounds does not affect the plant-available nutrient concentrations in soil. Batch laboratory soil sorption experiment and the “diffusive gradient in thin films” (DGT) technique were applied to evaluate the elements’ mobility in the soils. Sorption experiment using Chernozem and Fluvisol showed decreased mobile forms of Cu and S with the additions of both repellents and conversely increased mobile forms of Ca and Mn for DB, in both soil types. With increasing Cps rates, the mobile forms of Fe in Chernozem decreased and Mn in Fluvisol increased. The DGT experiment confirmed increased mobile/available Mn in both soils for both repellents and Fe in Fluvisol in the case of capsaicin. Soil application of both, DB and Cps, suggested to be able to influence the elements’ mobility, particularly, Mn mobility in soil significantly increased after repellent application. Their possible behavior in rhizosphere soil/soil solution should be investigated in further research.

Plants evolved to be a potential source of pharmacologically active compounds that are being widely accepted as insect repellent compounds for generations. Products of natural origin are mostly preferred over synthetic compounds because of fewer side effects on human health and the environment, have the potential to be produced locally, cost-effective, and are proved to be more efficient. They are best suited in organic food production and can play a much greater role in developing countries as a new class of eco-friendly products for controlling pests. In turn, the development of repellents is desirable alternatives to synthetic chemical insecticides for controlling pests. In the process of continual search for insect-based repellents of natural origin, a wide number of Tagetes species have been archived and all parts of this plant from root to seed possess a range of phytochemicals that are responsible for the repellent activity. The present study concentrates on the identification of active volatile compounds from Tageteserecta leaves by Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis and further evaluation through molecular docking studies of identified compounds against Mamestra brassicae.

Voles (Cricetidae) cause extensive damage to a variety of crops throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere. The removal of vegetation from crop fields at the end of the growing season, combined with a subsequent burrow fumigant application of aluminum phosphide, has the potential to substantially curtail vole activity but has not been thoroughly examined. We set up a study to test the impact of these management tools in perennial globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus) fields in Monterey County, CA, during 2010 and 2011, to determine their potential utility as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) program for managing California voles (Microtus californicus). We used both chewing indices and mortality estimates derived via radiotelemetry to assess the efficacy of aboveground vegetation removal and aluminum phosphide applications on vole abundance. We determined the impact of plowing artichoke fields on vole activity as well. Both removal of vegetation and applications of aluminum phosphide substantially reduced vole presence within treated fields. Plowing also reduced vole abundance to the point of little residual activity following treatment. These management practices appear to be effective at eliminating voles from crop fields. Combining these tools with management practices designed to slow down reinvasion by neighboring vole populations (e.g., barriers, repellents, traps) has the potential to substantially reduce farmer reliance on rodenticides for vole management, although rodenticides will still be needed to curtail populations that reestablish within crop fields. Such an IPM approach should substantially benefit both farmers and agro-ecosystems.

The essential oil (EO) from leaves of Mentha piperita was extracted by hydrodistillation. Twenty-one chemical components, accounting for 97.5% of the total oil, were determined by GC-MS and GC-FID. The major chemical components included menthol (41.6%), L-menthone (24.7%), isomenthol (6.3%), and limonene (5.0%). The bioactivity of the obtained EO and its two major components against Tribolium castaneum, Lasioderma serricorne, and Liposcelis bostrychophila adults were evaluated by fumigation, contact, and repellent activity bioassay. The EO showed significant fumigation and contact toxicity against T. castaneum (LC₅₀ = 18.1 mg/L air and LD₅₀ = 2.9 μg/adult, respectively), L. serricorne (LC₅₀ = 68.4 mg/L air and LD₅₀ = 12.6 μg/adult, respectively), and L. bostrychophila (LC₅₀ = 0.6 mg/L air and LD₅₀ = 49.8 μg/adult, respectively) adults. Meanwhile, the repellent effect of the EO on T. castaneum and L. serricorne adults was comparable to that of the positive control at the highest tested concentration. Menthol and L-menthone were two major components in total oil. Among them, L-menthone exhibited significant insecticidal activity on target insects, and menthol showed notable repellent effects. The results indicated that the EO of M. piperita leaves and two tested components have potential to be developed as natural insecticides and repellents for the control of stored product insect pests. The recent outbreaks of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika virus highlighted the pivotal importance of mosquito vector control in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. However, mosquito control is facing hot challenges, mainly due to the rapid development of pesticide resistance in Culicidae and the limited success of biocontrol programs on Aedes mosquitoes. In this framework, screening botanicals for their mosquitocidal potential may offer effective and eco-friendly tools in the fight against mosquitoes. In the present study, the essential oil (EO) obtained from the medicinal plant Origanum scabrum was analyzed by GC-MS and evaluated for its mosquitocidal and repellent activities towards Anopheles stephensi, Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Culex tritaeniorhynchus. GC-MS analysis showed a total of 28 compounds, representing 97.1 % of the EO. The major constituents were carvacrol (48.2 %) and thymol (16.6 %). The EO was toxic effect to the A. stephensi, A. aegypti, C. quinquefasciatus, and C. tritaeniorhynchus larvae, with LC₅₀ of 61.65, 67.13, 72.45, and 78.87 μg/ml, respectively. Complete ovicidal activity was observed at 160, 200, 240, and 280 μg/ml, respectively. Against adult mosquitoes, LD₅₀ were 122.38, 134.39, 144.53, and 158.87 μg/ml, respectively. In repellency assays, the EOs tested at 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/cm² concentration of O. scabrum gave 100 % protection from mosquito bites up to 210, 180, 150, and 120 min, respectively. From an eco-toxicological point of view, the EO was tested on three non-target mosquito predators, Gambusia affinis, Diplonychus indicus, and Anisops bouvieri, with LC₅₀ ranging from 4162 to 12,425 μg/ml. Overall, the EO from O. scabrum may be considered as a low-cost and eco-friendly source of phytochemicals to develop novel repellents against Culicidae.

The natural and ecologically safe control of stored product insects has gained considerable attention in modern society. In this study of further searching for botanical pesticides from wild-growing plant, the contact toxicity and repellency towards Tribolium castaneum and Liposcelis bostrychophila were assessed for the essential oil (EO) from Ostericum viridiflorum. The EO was distilled from aboveground parts of O. viridiflorum and checked by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Twenty-two compounds were identified and the main components were β-caryophyllene (24.3%), α-humulene (21.0%), apiol (10.2%), and carotol (2.5%). For bioactivity tests, results indicated that the EO and its two main compounds (β-caryophyllene and α-humulene) all showed potent contact toxicity towards L. bostrychophila with LD₅₀ values of 44.52 μg/cm², 74.11 μg/cm², and 118.56 μg/cm², respectively. The EO and the two main compounds also exhibited comparable repellency towards T. castaneum and L. bostrychophila. The results evidenced the EO of O. viridiflorum aboveground parts and its major compounds could be considered for the development of eco-friendly botanical insecticides and repellents in controlling stored product insects.

The main objectives of the present study are to introduce new, ecologically safe, and natural compounds for controlling red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, and to understand the possible mode of action of these compounds. Therefore, the insecticidal and repellent activities of two phenylpropenes and six monoterpenes have been evaluated against the adults of T. castaneum. The inhibitory effects of these compounds on the activity of adenosine triphosphatases (ATPases) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were also tested. In fumigant toxicity assay, (−)-terpinen-4-ol (LC₅₀ = 20.47 μl/l air) and α-terpinene (LC₅₀ = 23.70 μl/l air) exhibited the highest toxicity without significant differences between them. Moreover, (−)-menthone and p-cymene showed strong toxicity, while (−)-citronellal, trans-cinnamaldehde, and eugenol were not active. In contact toxicity assay, the two phenylpropenes, trans-cinnamaldehde and eugenol, had the highest toxicity with same LC₅₀ value of 0.02 mg/cm². The monoterpenes and phenylpropenes showed pronounced repellent effect on the adults of T. castaneum at 0.001 mg/cm² with (−)-menthone, trans-cinnamaldehyde, and α-terpinene being the most effective after 2 h of exposure. Repellent activity depended on compound, exposure time, and concentration. On the other hand, the tested compounds exhibited strong inhibition of ATPases form the larvae of T. castaneum as their IC₅₀ values ranged between 1.74 and 19.99 mM. In addition, (−)-citronellal (IC₅₀ = 9.82 mM) and trans-cinnamaldehde (IC₅₀ = 23.93 mM) caused the highest inhibitory effect on AChE, while α-pinene (IC₅₀ = 53.86) and p-cymene (IC₅₀ = 68.97 mM) showed the weakest inhibitory effect. The results indicated that the tested phenylpropenes and monoterpenes had the potential to be developed as natural insecticides and repellents for controlling T. castaneum.

Many commercially available agro and household chemicals are used as pesticides, repellents, and growth inhibitors against insect pests. The repeated uses of these chemicals against insect pests have caused the development of resistance in them; they also cause ill effects on nontarget organisms. The present study was aimed to evaluate the antifeedant, larvicidal, pupicidal, and biochemical effects of the solvent extracts of Solanum xanthocarpum against third instar larvae of Helicoverpa armigera. Hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts were subjected to phytochemical analysis. The results revealed the presence of terpenoids, flavonoid, and quinone. Maximum antifeedant activity of 72.30% was recorded in chloroform extract followed by hexane (69.02%) and ethyl acetate (57.40%) extracts against H. armigera. Chloroform extracts of S. xanthocarpum showed more than 60% larvicidal and pupicidal activity against H. armigera. The effective chloroform extract was fractionated with increasing polarity of solvent system (hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate extracts). Based on the TLC profile, nine major fractions were isolated. The fourth fraction showed higher antifeedant, larvicidal, and pupicidal activity against H. armigera. The effective fraction reduced the hemolymph and gut protein concentration in a concentration-dependent manner (r ² 0.99). The effective fraction 4 showed 100% larvicidal activity at 500 ppm concentration with LC₅₀ value of 227.95 ppm. The fourth fraction did not show any toxic symptom or mortality of earthworm. Based on these results, this effective fraction could be used in the development of a pesticide formulation to control insect.
