Fat, oil, and grease (FOG) deposits in the urban sewer system affect the optimal performance of the wastewater collection system and treatment plant, while increasing sewer maintenance costs. The interaction of microplastics (MPs) and FOG in the sewer system could drastically change the quality of deposited materials and the fate of MPs in raw sewage. In this study, the batch experiment was conducted to explain the mechanism of FOG formation by synthetic wastewater and its interaction with polystyrene (PS) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) particles. We found three different segments for FOG deposits in the batch, namely static and buoyant micro-deposits, gel-like, and solid deposits. The average size of micro-deposits adhered to the solid-liquid interface of the container was 25 µm and buoyant deposits with a small size of 3 µm adsorbed onto the MPs at the liquid-air interface. The gel-like formation promoted a virtual liquid phase where PS and PMMA were confined and segregated. Some PMMA particles were entrapped in the self-assembly of biopolymers that formed between the PS particles. This research indicates that FOG deposition in the urban sewers contains high numbers of MPs, such that any plan involving a reuse or disposal program requires a risk assessment.

In this work influence of different concentrations of linear active substance (LAS-DBS) on activity of Serranus scriba CUV have been studied. Desynchronization of circadian rhythms is in direct correlation with LAS growing concentrations. The high disproportion was found between maximum permitted concentrations (3 mg/l) and our results which show the changes in fish behaviour at 0.2 mg/l LAS.

International audience | This study focused on the role of bioaccessibility in the phenanthrene (PHE) biodegradation in diffusely contaminated soil, by combining chemical and microbiological approaches.First, we determined PHE dissipation rates and PHE sorption/desorption isotherms for two soils (PPY and Pv) presenting similar chronic PAH contamination, but different physico-chemical properties.Our results revealed that the PHE dissipation rate was significantly higher in the Pv soil compared to the PPY soil, while PHE sorption/desorption isotherms were similar. Interestingly, increases of PHE desorption and potentially of PHE bioaccessibility were observed for both soils when adding rhamnolipids (biosurfactants produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Second, using C-13-PHE incubated in the same soils, we analyzed the PHE degrading bacterial communities. The combination of stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP) and 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing revealed that Betaproteobacteria were the main PHE degraders in the Pv soil, while a higher bacterial diversity (Alpha-, Beta-, Gammaproteobacteria and Actinobacteria) was involved in PHE degradation in the PPY soil. The amendment of biosurfactants commonly used in biostimulation methods (i.e. rhamnolipids) to the two soils clearly modified the PHE sorption/desorption isotherms, but had no significant impact on PHE degradation rates and PHE-degraders identity.These results demonstrated that increasing the bioaccessibility of PHE has a low impact on its degradation and on the functional populations involved in this degradation.

Marine deposit feeders are of ecological significance in transferring sedimentary Cd along aquatic food chains. A key process for this transfer is these organisms’ dietary uptake of Cd via solubilization of Cd present in ingested contaminated sediment. To better understand the bioavailability of sedimentary Cd to deposit feeders, the present study used in vitro extraction experiments to explore the contribution of different digestive agents (proteins, amino acids and surfactants) to the solubilization of Cd from sediment collected in a highly-contaminated Chinese bay. This was done for various commercially-available mimetic digestive agents (the protein BSA, a mixture of amino acids, and the surfactants rhamnolipid and SDS), and for proteins and surfactants collected from the gut juice of a sipunculan worm. The Cd mobilization capacity of BSA was significantly higher than that of the amino acids and the commercial surfactants. In the presence of BSA, > 70% of the released Cd became associated with this protein. In contrast, the digestive proteins from the sipunculan had a lower Cd mobilization capacity than was the case for the other digestive agents and the majority of the released Cd (∼80%) was associated with small molecular weight fractions. The differences in Cd mobilization between the BSA and the digestive proteins were attributed to differences in their sediment-adsorption tendencies and their Cd-complexing capacities. While the digestive surfactants had minor effects on the release of sedimentary Cd, they significantly enhanced Cd mobilization by the digestive proteins when both were present simultaneously. Our results suggest that the characteristics of proteins should be considered when using commercially-available mimetic digestive agents to explore Cd bioavailability in sediments. Furthermore, digestive surfactants seem to have important effects on the solubilization of Cd during gut passage by reducing the adsorption of the digestive proteins to the sediments.

Applying an electric field to stimulate the microbial reductive dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) represents a promising approach for bioremediation of PCB-contaminated sites. This study aimed to demonstrate the biocathodic film-facilitated reduction of PCB 61 in a sediment-based bioelectrochemical reactor (BER) and, more importantly, the characterizations of electrode-microbe interaction from microbial and electrochemical perspectives particularly in a time-dependent manner. The application of a cathodic potential (−0.45 V vs. SHE) significantly improved the rate and extent of PCB 61 dechlorination compared to the open-circuit scenario (without electrical stimulation), and the addition of an external surfactant further increased the dechlorination, with Tween 80 exerting more pronounced effects than rhamnolipid. The bacterial composition of the biofilms and the bioelectrochemical kinetics of the BERs were found to be time-dependent and to vary considerably with the incubation time and slightly with the coexistence of an external surfactant. Excellent correlations were observed between the dechlorination rate and the relative abundance of Dehalogenimonas, Dechloromonas, and Geobacter, the dechlorination rate and the cathodic current density recorded from the chronoamperometry tests, and the dechlorination rate and the charge transfer resistance derived from the electrochemical impedance tests, with respect to the 120 day-operation. After day 120, PCB 61 was resistant to further appreciable reduction, but substantial hydrogen production was detected, and the bacterial community and electrochemical parameters observed on day 180 were not distinctly different from those on day 120.

The effect of different surfactants on the transport of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in quartz sand-packed columns was firstly investigated under various conditions. The stable plateau values (Cmax) of the breakthrough curves (BTCs), critical PVs (the number of pore volumes of infusions needed to reach the Cmax), maximum transport distances (Lmax), deposition rate coefficients (kd) and retention rates were calculated to compare the transport and retention of MWCNTs under various conditions. Stability of the MWCNT suspensions as a function of the influencing factors was examined to reveal the underlying mechanism of the MWCNT retention. Results showed that MWCNTs suspended by different surfactants presented different BTCs; the MWCNT transport increased with increasing sand size and MWCNT concentration; high flow velocity was favorable for the MWCNT transport, while high Ca2+ concentration and low pH were unfavorable for the transport; hetero-aggregation, straining and site blocking occurred during the transport.

The ecotoxicology of surfactants is attracting wide attention due to the rapidly expanding global application. As interspecific relationships play one of the central roles in structuring biological communities, it is necessary to take it into risk assessments on surfactants. With this aim, our study investigated the interference of three common surfactants on the inducible defense of a freshwater phytoplankton Scenedesmus obliquus. Nonlethal environmentally relevant concentrations (10 and 100 μg L⁻¹) of several surfactants were set up. Results showed that growth and photosynthetic efficiency of Scenedesmus were inhibited during first 96 h, but recovered in the later stage. Surfactants interfered inducible defense of Scenedesmus against Daphnia grazing, and the interference was related to chemical characteristics of surfactants. The anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) enhanced the colony formation even without grazing cues, whereas fewer defensive colonies were formed under the effects of cationic surfactant benzalkonium bromide (BZK) and nonionic surfactant polyoxyethylene (40) nonylphenol ether (NPE). These findings highlighted the sensitivity of grazer-induced morphological defense of Scenedesmus to surfactants even at nonlethal concentrations, which potentially affects the energy and information flow between trophic levels. This study appeals for more attention to take interspecific relationships into consideration in assessing the potential ecological risk of pollutants.

Glyphosate-based herbicides are the world’s most consumed agrochemicals, and they are commonly used in various agroecosystems, including forests, as well as in urban zones and gardens. These herbicides are sold as formulations containing adjuvants. Other tank-mixing adjuvants (most often surfactants) are commonly added to these formulations prior to application. According to the manufacturers of agrochemicals, such tank mixes (as these are known in agronomic and horticultural practice) have modified properties and perform better than do the herbicides as used alone. The effects of these tank mixes on the environment and on beneficial arthropods are almost unknown. Therefore, we studied whether a herbicide formulation mixed with adjuvant has modified effects on one of the most common genera of ground-dwelling wolf spiders vis-à-vis the herbicide formulation and adjuvants themselves. Specifically, we studied the synergistic effect in the laboratory on the predatory activity (represented by the number of killed flies) of wolf spiders in the genus Pardosa after direct treatment using the glyphosate-based herbicide formulation Roundup klasik Pro®, Roundup klasik Pro® in a mixture with the surfactant Wetcit®, Roundup klasik Pro® in a mixture with the surfactant Agrovital®, and the surfactants alone. We found that pure surfactants as well as herbicide-and-surfactants tank mixes significantly decrease the predatory activity of Pardosa spiders in the short term even as Roundup klasik Pro® did not itself have any such effect. Our results support the hypothesis that plant protection tank mixes may have modified effect on beneficial arthropods as compared to herbicide formulations alone. Therefore, testing of pesticide tank mixes is highly important, because it is these tank mixes that are actually applied to the environment.

The partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in agricultural crop leaves, contributes to the exposure of organisms to these chemicals through the dietary pathway. To precisely predict the fate of PAHs and crop safety, the clearance of three-ringed phenanthrene (Phe) and four-ringed pyrene (Pyr) adsorbed individually onto living soybean leaf surfaces, as well as the effects of two surfactants, namely, an ionic surfactant (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, SDBS) and a non-ionic surfactant (polyoxyethyleneglycol dodecyl ether, Brij35), were investigated in situ using the laser-induced nanosecond time-resolved fluorescence (LITRF) method. The effects varied significantly with surfactant types primarily in terms of the elimination rates and the final residues of PAH chemicals. With increasing SDBS and Brij35 concentrations, volatilization rate constants (kC) of both Phe and Pyr initially decreased at fast rates and then at more moderate rates later on, resulting from the plasticizing effect of surfactants adsorbed on leaf surfaces. In addition, the photolysis rate constants (kP) decreased with the presence of SDBS but increased with the presence of Brij35. Overall, the total clearance rates of PAHs (kT) adsorbed onto living soybean leaf surfaces were inhibited by the presence of SDBS but promoted by the presence of Brij35. These observations show that surfactants may significantly alter the clearance of PAHs in agricultural systems, and the potential impact of surfactants on crop safety is closely related to surfactant types in natural environments.
