Assessment of Trace Metal Contamination and Water Quality of Surface Waters in the area surrounding the Lomonosov Diamond Deposit (NW Russia)

This article is devoted to the study of the impact of the development of the Lomonosov diamond deposit on the pollution of watercourses with trace metals. The high water cut of the exposed rock strata and the presence of groundwater require the constant pumping of wastewater into the filtration fields, and then to the nearby river. This work shows a significant contribution of discharge processes and drainage waters to the trace metal contents in the surface waters of the Zolotitsa river; an increase in the concentrations of Mg, Sr, Zn, Cu, Cd, As , and Se was noted. The seasonal variations of physicochemical parameters, the trace metal contents, as well as the total uranium and U isotope 234U, 238U, and 235U were analysed. Calculations of water quality indices (HMEI, HMPI, and HMTL) and public health risks (HI and CR) revealed a high level of pollution of certain sections of watercourses. Radiological studies of polluted rivers in the area showed a satisfactory situation. The results of this study can provide a basis for the subsequent monitoring of the impact of anthropogenic activities on nearby watercourses in the development of diamond deposits.

Metals contamination in water is becoming a threat to human health. The studies ecological and health risk assessment of trace metals was conducted in seven water bodies in Akwa Ibom State, between May 2021 and April 2022 (twelve months), to evaluate the levels of trace metals contaminant and suitability of the waters for human consumption. Six trace metals were assessed in the water samples; using atomic absorption spectrophotometer after digestion. Pollution indices such as heavy metal pollution index, comprehensive pollution index, contamination index and health risk assessment for non-carcinogenic were employed. The findings were compared with Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality. The mean concentration of some metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, and Cu) in some stations were exceeded the standard limits, while Fe and Ni exceeded the acceptable limits in all the stations, due to anthropogenic activities. The values for HPI in stations I, II, IV and VII were exceeded the threshold of 100, ranging between 61.4 and 743.5; CPI ranged from 1.05 to 3.72, while Cd ranged from 0.94 to 16.3, indicated that the water bodies are highly contaminated. The CDI and HQ values for Fe, Cd, Cr and Cu exceeded the oral toxicity reference dosage of contaminant and stipulated threshold (1) for HI in some stations both in children and adult, indicated that the water bodies are not suitable for human consumption. The findings call for concern regarding their effects on human health, which could be detrimental to the people drinking from these water.

Sampling was conducted on Agra-Delhi national highway NH-2. Samples were collected with the help of Sioutas cascade impactor. During the sampling, PM1.0-0.5 (255.85µg/m3) was higher than PM2.5-1.0 (218.96µg/m3). The AQI value for the average PM2.5 concentration also exceeded the severe AQ limit (401-500). These results showed that PM2.5 pollution has a significant influence on the site as a result of a variety of anthropogenic activities. During the summer season, for PM1.0-0.5 and PM2.5-1.0 highest values (µg/m3) of metals followed the same trend and it was observed as Mg(6.52)> Ca(5.89)> Al(3.64)> while for PM2.5-1.0 it was as Mg(10.12)> Ca(9.5)> Al(5.95) respectively. At roadside, most of these metals are emitted from the resuspension of dust and vehicle activities which causes serious diseases to the human being. Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn were highly enriched at national highway sampling sites, highlighting the crustal source, which has a major impact on metals concentration, followed by anthropogenic sources. The present research was conducted to find out the concentration level of metals in PM2.5-1.0 and PM1.0-0.5 particles in Agra, India to find out the health risk assessment at highway site.From the results, it was observed that all metals bound to larger size PM has high bioavailability. From the health risk assessment, it was found that all the metals bound smaller size particles showed higher HQ except in the case of Ni and Al. Cr, Pb showed carcinogenic risk to children and adults in both size fraction of PM except in the case of Ni.

International audience | <div><p>Aerated compost teas (ACTs) are rich in soluble humic substances (SHS) that have high affinity for metals, notably Cu. Using a batch experiment, we measured the extent to which two ACTs altered Cu dynamics in vineyard topsoils one day and 21 days after their addition. Soils were extracted with 0.01 M KCl, and total Cu concentration, free Cu ion fraction and size distribution of Cu ligands were measured in the extraction solution to assess the impact of ACT on the mobility of Cu. Diffusive gradient in thin film (DGT) measurements were carried out to assess the effect of ACT on Cu bioavailability, and the dissociation rate of Cu-SHS complexes was measured. The results revealed that ACT increased the mobility of Cu from a factor 1.2 to 5.8 depending on the soil, the ACT and the incubation time. Cu mobilization was associated with an increase in absorbance at 254 nm and a decrease in the free Cu ion fraction in the KCl extract. Associated with the strong agreement between the size distribution of SHS and that of Cu ligands in the KCl extract of soils treated with ACT, these results showed that Cu was mobilized through complexation by the SHS present in ACTs. A fraction of the SHS supplied with ACTs sorbed onto the soil constituents, notably in calcareous soils where this fraction reached 86% for ACT B. Between 15% and 50% of the SHS remaining in solution degraded between day one and day 21 under the presumed action of microflora. This explains why the Cu mobilization efficiency of ACTs was on average lower in calcareous soils than in non-calcareous soils, and decreased with time. Lastly, ACT increased the bioavailability of Cu in soils from a factor 1.3 to 4.2, due to the relatively high dissociation rate of Cu-SHS complexes.</p></div>

International audience | Mining and smelting activities have contaminated the environment with trace metals (TMs) at a worldwide scale for at least two millennia. A combination of chemical approaches and active biomonitoring was performed to analyse the environmental availability and bioavailability of TM palaeo-pollution in a former Pb-Ag mining district in the Vosges Mountains, France. Along a soil TM contamination gradient that covered eight stations, including two archaeological mining sites, the toxicokinetics of six TMs (Pb, Cd, As, Ag, Co, Sb) in the snail Cantareus aspersus revealed that palaeo-pollution from the studied sites remains bioavailable. This study provides the first data on the accumulation kinetics of Ag and Co for C. aspersus. The environmental availability of the TMs was estimated with three chemical extraction methods (aqua regia, EDTA 50 mM, CaCl2 10 mM). Univariate regression analyses showed that EDTA extraction is the best method for estimating the bioavailability of Pb, As, Ag, Co and Sb to snails. None of the three extractants was efficient for Cd. A multivariate analysis of bioaccumulation data revealed that TM bioavailability and transfer were modulated by exposure sources (soil, humus and vegetation) rather than by soil physico-chemical characteristics. Hence, although the deposition of mining wastes dates back several centuries, these wastes still represent a source of contamination that must be considered to develop relevant site management and environmental risk assessment. International audience | The biomonitoring of metallic contamination in marine ecosystems is often focused on animal species of commercial interest and in lesser extent on non-model marine invertebrates. The aim of this study was to compare the metal concentrations (Li, Al, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, Cd, Hg, Pb) in seven marine sponges with a particular interest in the homoscleromorph sponge Oscarella lobularis at different sites of the Bay of Marseille, France. Inter-species variabilities suggest that the seven sponge species studied accumulate metals differently. In O. lobularis, a multi-site analysis shows different bioaccumulation between the eight sampled populations. These inter-site differences may reflect differences in the hydrodynamic features and in past and present industrial activities. Because Oscarella lobularis shows a homogeneous metal accumulation pattern in comparison with the other tested species, it appears to be suitable for metal contamination biomonitoring in Mediterranean coastal waters, in particular of the coralligenous communities.

International audience | The level and the ecological risk assessment of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cr, V, As, Pb, Cd and Co) were evaluated in surface sediments from fifty-one stations along the Algerian coast. The main objective was to evaluate the risk that such metals may cause to the ecosystem, and thus the stations were choose in relation with the fishing trawlable areas of Algeria. The usual chemical indexes Geoaccumulation index (Igeo), Enrichment factor (EF) and Pollution Load Index (PLI) as well as potential ecological risk index reveal that the metal pollution along this coast is low, and is only related to As contents. Nevertheless, the concentrations of Ni, Cr and As exceed their respective ERL values (Effect range low) usually applied for Sediment Quality Guideline. However, Cr and Ni are mainly natural and cannot be related to anthropogenic inputs and their ecotoxicological levels as to be questioned.

It also compares the relative influence of both natural DOM upstream of Paris and effluent dissolved organic matter (EfDOM) output from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) on trace metal speciation and bioavailability in aquatic systems. In addition to the typical high- and low-affinity binding sites, a third family of very high-affinity binding sites has been highlighted for EfDOM. In receiving waters downstream of Paris during low-flow periods, the percentage of high- and very high-affinity sites originating from EfDOM reaches nearly 60 %. According to the speciation computation, the free copper concentration upstream of Paris exceeds the downstream Paris concentration by a factor of 2 to 4. As regards copper bioavailability, the highest EC50<inf>tot</inf> values were observed for EfDOM and downstream DOM, with a very low aromaticity and low UV absorbance. This finding suggests that specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) is unlikely to be useful in assessing metal speciation and toxicity in aquatic systems subject to strong urban pressures. These results also highlight that the copper speciation computation for surface water exposed to considerable human pressures should include not only the humic and/or fulvic part of dissolved organic carbon but more hydrophilic fractions as well, originating for example from EfDOM. © 2015 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg

A large quantity of trace metals has been continuously polluting the environment as a result of increasing urbanization and industrial processes. In 2016-2017, the metal (Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn) levels were determined in fecal pellets of Blue Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) at Bais Godam (industrial location) in Jaipur and Chittora (rural location) in Rajasthan, India. Fecal pellets in industrial regions which are under higher anthropogenic influence exhibited higher metal concentrations when compared with the fecal pellets of the same species in rural area which have minimal anthropogenic input, with statistically significant industrial-rural differences in the metal concentrations except for Ni. Results obtained in this study, as well as the comparison with literature data, indicated that concentrations of Cr and Cu were high in fecal pellets of Blue Rock Pigeon in the industrial region of the present study. Furthermore, many significant correlations were also observed between metal levels in the industrial region which could be attributed to a similar source. Moreover, contamination levels of pigeon excrement serve as one of the most compelling indicators in terrestrial systems for the monitoring of metal pollution levels.
