Assessment of Heavy Metals Pollution in Water and Sediments of Djendjen River, North Eastern Algeria
2018
Krika, Abderrezak | Krika, Fouad
Water and sediment samples have been collected from five different stations, located along Djendjen River between February and June, 2016 so that the concentrations of Cd, Ni, Zn, and Cu could be determined. The extent of the sediment pollution has been assessed, using the multiple pollution indices, namely Contamination Factor (CF), Pollution Load Index (PLI), and the geoaccumulation index (Igeo). The distribution of trace elements in water and sediment follows Ni>Zn>Cd>Cu and Zn>Ni>Cu>Cd, respectively. The water sample analysis from Djendjen River shows that the total concentrations of Cu, Ni, Cd, and Zn have been lower according to the references. In comparison, sediment mean metal concentrations with several environmental contamination parameters, like probable effect level (PEC) and background levels, indicates that the concentrations of all investigated elements are lesser than PEC, except for Ni, but higher than the background levels. The Igeo values reveal that Cd has been the most accumulated compared to the other metals. Contamination Factor (CF) confirms that the sediment samples have been moderate in terms of all studied metals contamination. The Pollution Load Index (PLI) values have been above one (>1), indicating an advanced decline of the sediment quality.

Water is one of the most crucial substances for life. In order to maintain their public health, each and every country has defined standards of drinking water quality, beyond which the water is considered harmful for human health. The current study compares physical, chemical, and biological standards of drinking water quality for the USA, EU, Japan, India, and Bangladesh, considering 4 physical parameters (namely, color, odor, taste, and turbidity), 35 chemical parameters (such as Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Phosphate (PO43-), Sodium (Na), Phenolic compounds, Nitrite (NO2-), Arsenic (As), Aluminum (Al), etc.) and 2 biological parameters (i.e., Coliform (Fecal) and Coliform (Total)). The data has been collected from several secondary sources and since processes of data collection for water quality differ from one another, this aspect has been ignored. No variation has been found in biological water quality standards along with physical quality standards of the considered regions. In order to find out the differences in chemical parameters, standard ANOVA and pair-wise F-test have been conducted. There was no disparity among chemical parameters in ANOVA test. Moreover, thanks to the few excessive values of the standards (as in case of Bangladesh), the COD value is 4 mg/L, whereas in other countries this parameter is much less. However, the chemical parameters of water quality standards in Bangladesh vary significantly from other countries. Besides, there has been no variation among the standards of other countries, even though they are located in different continents. Most interestingly, despite being neighbors, Bangladesh and India differ significantly in this regard.

Mineral phosphorus fertilizers are regularly applied to agricultural sites, but their uranium (U) content is potentially hazardous to humans and the environment. Fertilizer-derived U can accumulate in the soil, but might also leach to ground-, spring and surface waters. We sampled 19 mineral fertilizers from the canton of Bern and soils of three arable and one forest reference sites at each of four locations with elevated U concentrations (7–28 μg L⁻¹) in nearby drinking water wells. The total U concentrations of the fertilizers were measured. The soils were analysed at three depth intervals down to 1 m for general soil parameters, total Cd, P, U and NaHCO₃-extractable U concentrations, and ²³⁴/²³⁸U activity ratios (AR). The U concentrations and AR values of the drinking water samples were also measured. A theoretical assessment showed that fertilizer-derived U may cause high U concentrations in leaching waters (up to approx. 25 μg L⁻¹), but normally contributes only a small amount (approx. 0–3 μg L⁻¹). The arable soils investigated showed no significant U accumulation compared to the forest sites. The close positive correlation of AR with NaHCO₃-extractable U (R = 0.7, p < 0.001) indicates that application of fertilizer can increase the extractable U pool. The lack of depth gradients in the soil U concentrations (1.5–2.7 mg kg⁻¹) and AR (0.90–1.06) ratios are inconsistent with the accumulation of U in the surface soil, and might indicate some leaching of fertilizer-derived U. The AR values in the water samples were close to 1, possibly suggesting an influence of fertilizer-derived U. However, based on findings from the literature and considering the heterogeneity of the catchment area, the agricultural practices, and the comparatively long distance to the groundwater, we conclude that fertilizer-derived U makes only a minor contribution to the elevated U concentrations in the water samples.

In this study, the dynamic Cr(VI) removal process from water by the synthesized multilayer material coated nanoscale zerovalent iron (SBC-nZVI) was systematically discussed at different treatment conditions. The results showed that initial pH, contact time, Cr(VI) concentration and the dosage of SBC-nZVI were important parameters that influenced the Cr(VI) removal efficiency. The major Cr(VI) removal occurred within 60 min and gradually tend to equilibrium with consistent treatment. The removal efficiency was highly depended on pH values and the adsorption kinetics agreed well with the pseduo-second-order model (PSO). When the initial Cr(VI) concentration was below 15 mg/L, the removal rate could reach to about 100%. Moreover, the removal efficiency increased with the increase of SBC-nZVI dosage, which related to the increase of reactive sites. To understand the removal mechanism, SBC-nZVI before and after reaction with Cr(VI) were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These analysis showed that the interaction of SBC-nZVI with Cr(VI) was mainly controlled by reduction and electrostatic attraction. Therefore, these results explained the interaction between Cr(VI) and SBC-nZVI material in detail, and further proved that SBC-nZVI could be an effective material to remove Cr(VI) from water.

Abbassy, Moustafa Mohamed Saleh
The objective of this study was to evaluate the distribution pattern of persistent organic pollutants in water, sediment and aquatic biota represented by Oreochromis niloticus and Donax trunculus at the Rosetta Nile branch estuary. α-HCH, p,p′-DDE and polychlorinated biphenyls were the predominant compounds detected at ranges of 0.54–4.90 ng/l water, 0.75–2.41 ng/g, d. wt. sediment and 2.19–28.11 ng/g, fresh wt. biota. β and γ-HCHs, endosulfan compounds, heptachlor and heptachlor epoxide were at low detection frequencies. Totally, the organochlorine pollutants were at high levels and abundances in Donax spp. than in Tilapia spp. followed by sediment and water. These levels were ranged between lower and higher than those found by the other studies established in Egypt, and well below its tolerable residue levels in fish. A correlation was found for the quantified pollutants between water, sediment and biota. This is clearly reflecting the bioaccumulation properties of these compounds.

This study aimed to evaluate the PAH distribution, sources, seasonal variations and ecological risk assessment in superficial water from the Japaratuba River, Brazil. PAH concentrations ranged from 4 to 119ngL⁻¹. It was observed that the PAH total concentrations and profiles showed significant differences when comparing the dry season (summer) with the rainy season (winter). Furthermore, most of the PAH originated from pyrogenic sources in the winter, whereas a mixture of sources was observed in the summer. PAH concentration levels found in this study were considered lower than those obtained in other estuarine systems. Ecological risk assessment was determined for individual PAH, based on the risk quotient (RQ) to evaluate the risk of aquatic biota's exposure to PAH. Results suggested that the Japaratuba River has achieved a moderate degree of ecological risk for high molecular weight, showing the importance of identifying these carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds in aquatic systems.

A sea water wave tank fitted in an artificial UV light weathering chamber was built to study the behaviour of polypropylene (PP) injected pieces in close ocean-like conditions. In air, the same pieces sees a degradation in the bulk with a decrease of mechanical properties, a little change of crystal properties and nearly no change of surface chemistry. Weathering in the sea water wave tank shows only a surface changes, with no effect on crystals or mechanical properties with loss of small pieces of matter in the sub-micron range and a change of surface chemistry. This suggests an erosion dispersion mechanism. Such mechanism could explain why no particle smaller than about one millimeter is found when collecting plastic debris at sea: there are much smaller, eroded from plastic surfaces by a mechano-chemical process similar to the erosion mechanism found in the dispersion of agglomerate under flow.

The water quality of headwater streams is a worldwide concern because of their critical roles in supplying clean water for drinking and other consumptive uses. Here, we evaluate temporal trends and spatial dynamics of the permanganate index (COD), ammonia-nitrogen (AN), and total phosphorus (TP) for 31 sites in headwater watersheds of the Huai River Basin, China. The seasonal Mann-Kendall test and correlation and variance analyses were applied to long-term time series (2003–2010) of water quality data in order to investigate the patterns of water quality trends, as well as their linkages with the watershed landscape. The results indicated that (1) more than 1/3 of headwater monitoring sites have exhibited either significantly increasing or decreasing trends in COD, AN and TP, while only TP increased for most them; (2) obvious increasing concentration gradients were observed for all water quality parameters along the upstream to the downstream continuum. Such spatial patterns can be highly explained by land cover and landscape configuration metrics. The percent of urban land and urban-related landscape metrics (such as the Landscape Division Index) were the primary explanatory variables for AN, while the aggregation metrics of cropland and urban land cover were the main predictors of COD and TP; (3) historical dynamics of COD, AN, and TP were influenced by land cover transitions. The trends of COD and TP may be attributable to the change in the wetland landscape, while the trends of AN were likely related to changes in forestland area as well as environmental management. Overall, our study determined the spatial and temporal dynamics of water quality parameters in the headwater watersheds and interpreted the possible reasons behind their spatio-temporal dynamics, which can have important implications for sustainable landscape planning as well as headwater watershed management.
