In this paper are presented the length and weight growth of carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) from artificial lake Slatino (The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia). Artificial lake Slatino because some recontruction works was whole emplied in 1993. Than all fish population was leaved in the river Mramorechka. Artificial lake Slatino has been stocking with individuals of carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) catch from Lake Ohrid. They are used for reproduction and in first years were used for reparation of the fish fond in artificial lake.

In the previous publication “Can atmospheric pollution be considered a co-factor in extremely high level of SARS-CoV-2 lethality in Northern Italy?” Conticini et al. hypothesized that the surplus of lethality of the novel SARS-CoV-2 in Northern Italy may be at least in part explained by the evidence of highest pollution reported in this area, as both severe COVID-19 and smog exposure are correlated to an innate immune system hyper-activation with subsequent lung inflammation and injury. Since this hypothesis alone does not fully explain why specific subgroups of patients are at major risk, we hypothesized that obesity may be one of the links between COVID-19 severity and high level of air pollution. First, obesity is a predisposing factor for SARS-Cov-2 infection and worse COVID-19 outcomes, and unequivocal evidence demonstrated that fat mass excess is independently associated with several pulmonary diseases and lung inflammation. Moreover, it has been shown that obesity may intensify the detrimental effects of air pollution on the lungs, and this is not surprising if we consider that these conditions share an excessive activation of the immune system and a lung inflammatory infiltrate. Finally, fat mass excess has also been speculated to be itself a consequence of air pollutants exposure, which has been proved to induce metabolic disruption and weight gain in murine models. In conclusion, although many variables must be taken into account in the analysis of the pandemic, our observations suggest that obesity may act as effect modifier of smog-induced lung-injury, and the concomitant presence of these two factors could better explain the higher virulence, faster spread and greater mortality of SARS-CoV-2 in Northern Italy compared to the rest of the country.

Light at night (LAN) negatively impacts the behaviour and physiology; however, very little is known about molecular correlates of LAN-induced effects in diurnal animals. Here, we assessed LAN-induced effects on behaviour and physiology, and examined molecular changes in the liver of diurnal zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). Birds were exposed to dim LAN (dLAN: 12L = 150 lux: 12D = 5 lux), with controls on 12L (150 lux): 12D (0 lux). dLAN altered daily activity-rest and eating patterns, induced nocturnal eating and caused body fattening and weight gain, and reduced nocturnal melatonin levels. Concomitant increased nighttime glucose levels, decreased daytime thyroxine and triglycerides levels, and hepatic lipid accumulation suggested the impairment of metabolism under dLAN. Transcriptional assays evidenced dLAN-induced negative effects on metabolism in the liver, the site of metabolic homeostasis. Particularly, increased g6pc and foxo1 mRNA expressions suggested an enhanced gluconeogenesis, while increased egr1 and star expressions suggested enhanced cholesterol biosynthesis and lipid metabolism, respectively. Similarly, overexpressed sirt1 indicated protection from the metabolic damage due to elevated gluconeogenesis and cholesterol biosynthesis under dLAN. However, no effect on genes involved in lipogenesis (fasn) and insulin signalling pathway (socs3 and insig1) might indicate for the post transcriptional/post translational modification effects or the involvement of other genetic pathways in LAN-induced effects. We also found daily rhythm in the hepatic expression of selected clock and clock-controlled genes (per2, bmal1 and reverb-beta), with an elevated mesor and amplitude of per2 oscillation, suggesting a role of per2 in the liver metabolism. These results demonstrate dLAN-induced negative effects on the behaviour and physiology, and provide molecular insights into metabolic risks of the exposure to illuminated nights to diurnal animals including humans in an urban setting.

Thallium (Tl) is a well-recognized hazardous toxic heavy metal that has been reported to have embryotoxicity and fetotoxicity. However, little is known about its association with preterm birth (PTB) in humans. We aimed to evaluate the predictors of Tl exposure and assessed its relation with PTB. The study population included 7173 mother-infant pairs from a birth cohort in Wuhan, China. Predictors of Tl concentrations were explored using linear regression analyses, and associations of Tl exposure with risk of PTB or gestational age at birth were estimated using logistic regression or generalized linear models. The geometric mean and median values of urinary Tl concentrations were 0.28 μg/L (0.55 μg/g creatinine) and 0.29 μg/L (0.53 μg/g creatinine). We found that maternal urinary Tl concentrations varied by gestational weight gain, educational attainment, multivitamin and iron supplementations. Women with Tl concentrations higher than 0.80 μg/g creatinine were at higher risk of giving birth prematurely versus those with Tl concentrations lower than 0.36 μg/g creatinine [adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval (CI)): 1.55 (1.05, 2.27)], and the association was more pronounced in PTB with premature rupture of membranes (PROM) rather than in PTB without PROM. About 3-fold increase in creatinine-corrected Tl concentrations were associated with 0.99-day decrease in gestational length (95% CI: −1.36, −0.63). This is the first report on the associations between maternal Tl exposure and the risk of PTB.

Trace elements are added to poultry feed to control infection and improve weight gain. However, the fate of these trace elements in poultry litter is poorly understood. Because poultry litter is applied as fertilizer in many agricultural regions, evaluation of the environmental processes that influence the mobility of litter-derived trace elements is critical for predicting if trace elements are retained in soil or released to water. This study examined the effect of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in poultry litter leachate on the fate and transport of litter-derived elements (As, Cu, P and Zn) using laboratory column experiments with soil collected from the Delmarva Peninsula (Mid-Atlantic, USA), a region of intense poultry production. Results of the experiments showed that DOC enhanced the mobility of all of the studied elements. However, despite the increased mobility, 60–70% of Zn, As and P mass was retained within the soil. In contrast, almost all of the Cu was mobilized in the litter leachate experiments, with very little retention in soil. Overall, our results demonstrate that the mobility of As, Cu, Zn and P in soils which receive poultry litter application is strongly influenced by both litter leachate composition, specifically organic acids, and adsorption to soil. Results have implications for understanding fate and transport of trace elements released from litter application to soil water and groundwater, which can affect both human health and the environment.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame retardants and the congener 2, 2′, 4, 4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (PBDE-47) is capable of inducing thyroid endocrine disruption and developmental toxicity. However, little is known about whether developmental PBDE-47 exposure-elicited alterations in semen quality is associated with thyroid hormones (THs) perturbation. In this research, we sought to explore the impacts of gestational and lactational PBDE-47 exposure on adult sperm quantity and motility, and its link with THs levels. For this purpose, female Sprague-Dawley rats were administered environmentally relevant PBDE-47 levels (0.1, 1.0, 10 mg/kg/day) by oral gavage from prepregnancy through lactation cessation to achieve early-life exposure of offspring and to mimic the actual exposure. Sperm quantity and motility together with serum THs levels from male offspring were determined on postnatal day 88. In utero and lactational exposure to PBDE-47 boosted the weight gain while reduced the relative testis weight in adult male offspring. These were accompanied with the reductions in sperm counts (total and living sperm counts), the percentage of progressive sperm motility, sperm velocities (curvilinear velocity, straight-line velocity and average path velocity), motion path (beat cross frequency, linearity and wobble) and linear motile sperm parameters (count, motility and concentration). Further studies identified that the levels of serum triiodothyronine (T₃) were increased by PBDE-47 exposure and negatively associated with those differential semen parameters on quantity and motility. Collectively, our results indicate that exposure to low-level PBDE-47 during early-life development impairs semen quality in adult rats, which could be mediated partially by abnormal T₃ levels.

DCOIT (4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) is the main component of SeaNine-211, a new antifouling agent that replaces tributyltin to prevent the growth of undesirable organisms on ships. There have been some studies on the toxicity of DCOIT, but the mechanism of DCOIT’s toxicity to crustaceans still requires elucidation. This study examined the chronic toxicity (4 weeks) of 0, 3, 15, and 30 μg/L DCOIT to the Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) from the aspects of growth and physiological and histological changes in the hepatopancreas and gills. A transcriptomic analysis was performed on the hepatopancreas to reveal the underlying mechanism of DCOIT in shrimp. The exposure to 30 μg/L DCOIT significantly reduced the survival and weight gain of L. vannamei. High Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase activity and melanin deposition were found in the gills after 4 weeks of 15 μg/L or 30 μg/L DCOIT exposure. The highest concentration of DCOIT (30 μg/L) induced changes in hepatopancreatic morphology and metabolism, including high anaerobic respiration and the accumulation of triglycerides. Compared with the exposure to 3 μg/L DCOIT, shrimp exposed to 15 μg/L DCOIT showed more differentially expressed genes (DEGs) than those in the control, and these DEGs were involved in biological processes such as starch and sucrose metabolism and choline metabolism in cancer. The findings of this study indicate that L. vannamei is sensitive to the antifouling agent DCOIT and that DCOIT can induce altered gene expression at a concentration of 15 μg/L and can interfere with shrimp metabolism, growth and survival at 30 μg/L.

It has been suggested that the toxic effects of cadmium (Cd) may disrupt ovarian and uterine functions in adults. However, Cd exposure during gestation and lactation and its effects on the reproductive development in female offspring is still not clear, and the mechanisms underlying exposure toxicology remain mostly unexplored. To investigate how Cd exposure of female rats (F0) during gestation and lactation affects the reproductive development of their female offspring, we studied the steroidogenesis, folliculogenesis, puberty onset, and litter size of the first (F1) and second (F2) filial generations following F0 female rats which had been exposed to CdCl2. The mechanisms related to the early onset of puberty induced by such exposure in female offspring were explored. Maternal exposure to Cd dramatically increased the biosynthesis of steroid hormones in F1 female offspring by the activation of cAMP/PKA pathway and up-regulated expression of steroidogenesis related proteins such as StAR, CYP11A1, 3β-HSD and CYP19A1. The high levels of steroid hormones contributed to an early puberty onset, promoted the differentiation and maturation of follicles, and led to the proliferation of endometrium that resulted in a uterus weight gain. The increased number of antral follicles eventually caused a big litter size. Despite of being free from additional Cd exposure, the levels of CYP11A1 and CYP19A1 in the ovaries of F2 female rats were also high, which resulted in a high concentration of serum progesterone. These results suggested that hormonal changes induced by exposure to Cd in utero might have a lasting effect beyond the first generation. These findings may help to better understand the origin of female sexual dysfunction in the developmental stages in general.

The main aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using soybean meal added with papain to replace half of the fishmeal used in the moist pellets (49% fishmeal and 45% trash fish) developed by the Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) for culturing marine fish. Gold-lined seabream (Rhabdosargus sarba), brown spotted grouper (Epinephelus bleekeri) and pompano (Trachinotus blochii) were farmed at one of the research stations (Kat-O) of AFCD, for a period of 340 days. Results indicated that diets containing papain resulted in better fish growth (reflected by relative weight gain and feed conversion ratio) than diets without papain. In general, wet weight gain of fish depends on the amount of papain added in diet rather than the diet composition. Soybean used in conjunction with papain also contributed to a more effective growth than fish fed with the moist pellets alone. A laboratory experiment (using tanks) was conducted to study the effects of the diets on concentrations of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in the tank water. Results showed that concentrations of ammonia and nitrate were significantly lower (p < 0.05) when the fish were fed with papain-supplemented (with or without soybean meal) diets. It is envisaged that by using plant protein incorporated with enzymes could promote better growth of marine fish and lower the adverse impact of trash fish and fishmeal on water quality of the mariculture zones.

To investigate the impacts of sub-lethal concentrations of antibiotic agents in mariculture, culturable approach and DNA based detection were employed to isolate and analyse resistant bacteria and resistant genes in this study. Milkfish (Chanos chanos), the target rearing animal was exposed to sulfamethoxazole (SMX; 2 mg/L) for 8 weeks and resulted in reduced survival rate and weight gain to 61.9 % and 28.4 %, respectively compared to control milkfish (p < 0.001). The composition of SMX-resistant bacteria isolated from the culture water and the gastrointestinal tracts of milkfish underwent changes in response to SMX treatment with a reduced diversity. The prevalence of SMX resistant genes sul in bacterial isolates was elevated from 2.8 % of control to 100 % of SMX-administrated water. Exposure to SMX at a sub-lethal dosage enhanced the prevalence of resistance genes sul1 and sul2 in resistant bacteria, thus implying high frequency of resistance dissemination in the marine environment and surrounding ecosystems.
