Natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) produced in algal blooms and overgrowths of macrophyte changes the elimination and ecotoxicity of estrogens in freshwater lakes. The complexation of 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) and various DOMs, including the water- and sediment-derived DOMs from the algal-dominant zone in Lake Taihu (TW and TS, respectively) and the macrophyte-dominant zone in Poyang Lake (PW and PS, respectively), and the humic acid (HA), was investigated along with the subsequent effects on EE2 biodegradation. Dialysis equilibrium experiments showed that binding to DOM significantly decreased the freely soluble concentrations of EE2. The binding capacity of the five DOMs followed the order of PW < TW < PS ≈ TS < HA. A negative correlation was found between the organic-carbon-normalized sorption coefficient (logKDOC) and the absorption ratio (E₂/E₃) of DOM, indicating that the large sized, aromatic molecules were involved in the complexation. The reduced freely soluble concentrations of EE2 did not inhibit its biodegradation by an EE2-degrading strain, Rhodobacter blasticus. Conversely, the autochthonous-dominated water-derived DOMs stimulated a more extensive biodegradation of EE2 than the sediment-derived DOMs, and the existence of HA resulted in the smallest increase in EE2 biodegradation. The promoting effect was associated with the increased concentration, activity, and transforming rate of R. blasticus by the bioavailable components in DOM. The present study suggests that the significant impact of natural DOM should be fully considered when assessing the fate and ecological risks of estrogens in eutrophic waters.

The trophic balance of freshwater aquaculture activities has traditionally been monitored by chemical analysis of water; however, the parameters measured are usually characterized by high temporal variability. Aquatic mosses can be used as biomonitors as they integrate both continuous and episodic contamination events. Here we report, for the first time, a method for monitoring N enrichment in the surroundings of fish farms by measuring the N content and isotopic signal (δ15N) of transplanted living and devitalized specimens of the aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica. For this purpose, moss samples (“moss bags”) were exposed at increasing distances (10, 100, 300 and 1000 m) up- and downstream of the effluent discharge points of four trout farms, for 10 and 30 days. The low natural (background) variability in δ15N in upstream samples enabled detection of outlier values, caused by aquaculture discharges, at distances of 10 and 100 m downstream, especially in devitalized moss and after 10 days of exposure. However, the unexpectedly low N contents of moss samples exposed close to the discharge points complicates interpretation of the high levels of N forms detected by conventional physicochemical analysis of water. Although the mechanisms that modify N parameters in moss tissues were not clear, measurement of the isotopic signal δ15N in devitalized moss exposed for 10 days proved useful for monitoring the N pollution associated with intensive freshwater aquaculture.

The abuse of antibiotics has caused the propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquaculture systems. Although the recirculating systems have been considered as a promising approach for preventing the coastal water pollution of antibiotics and ARG, rare information is available on the distribution and proliferation of ARGs in the recirculating mariculture system. This study firstly investigated the proliferation of ARGs in coastal recirculating mariculture systems. Ten subtypes of ARGs including tet (tetB, tetG, tetX), sul (sul1, sul2), qnr (qnrA, qnrB, qnrS), and erm (ermF, ermT) were detected. The absolute abundances of the ARGs detected in the mariculture farm were more than 1 × 10⁴ copies/mL. The sulfonamide resistance genes (sul1 and sul2) were the most abundant ARGs with the abundance of 3.5 × 10⁷–6.5 × 10¹⁰ copies/mL. No obvious correlation existed between the antibiotics and ARGs. Some bacteria were positively correlated with two or more ARGs to indicate the occurrence of multidrug resistance. The fluidized-bed biofilter for wastewater treatment in the recirculating system was the main breeding ground for ARGs while the UV sterilization process could reduce the ARGs. The highest flux of ARGs (6.5 × 10²¹ copies/d) indicated that the discharge of feces and residual baits was the main gateway for ARGs in the recirculating mariculture system to enter the environments.

Rapid urbanization created unique urban environment with a characteristic of dramatic modification of land cover, consequently causing profound perturbations in the transport and fate of pollutants in urban ecosystem. Taking a hyper-urbanization city (Shanghai) as an example to reveal the influence of urbanization development on pollutant footprint, this study reconstructed and compared historical evolutions of elemental carbon (EC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) based on two lake sediment cores (DSL: Dianshan Lake; LXL: Luxun Lake) from early- and newly-urbanized areas, respectively. Historical fluxes of EC and total PAH (Σ₁₆PAHs) showed similar and sharply fluctuant increases occurring after the 1950s in the DSL core later than the LXL core after the 1900s. In modern times (after 2000), the mean fluxes of EC and Σ₁₆PAHs in the LXL core were 2.68- and 1.38-fold greater than those in the DSL core, respectively, indicating the stronger influence from more intensive human activities and longer industrial history in early urbanized area. Based on the significant correlations among socioeconomic factors with EC and Σ₁₆PAH fluxes, the extended STIRPAT (stochastic impacts by regression on population, affluence and technology) models were successfully constructed, revealing that significance of these driving factors were in the order of population > the proportion of heavy industry > coal consumption > gross domestic product (GDP) per capita > vehicle amount. In general, the obvious discrepancy in historical stage and intensity of sedimentary EC and PAH accumulations implied that some newly fast-developing cities still have a chance to adjust urban development strategy to avoid more serious pollution.

While migratory seabirds dominate ecotoxicological studies within the Arctic, there is limited knowledge about exposure and potential effects from circulating legacy and emerging contaminants in species who reside in the high-Arctic all year round. Here, we focus on the case of the Mandt's Black guillemot (Cepphus grylle mandtii) breeding at Kongsfjorden, Svalbard (79.00°N, 11.66°E) and investigate exposure to legacy and emerging contaminants in relation to individual physiological status, i.e. body condition, oxidative stress and relative telomere length. Despite its benthic-inshore foraging strategy, the Black guillemot displayed overall similar contaminant concentrations in blood during incubation (∑PCB11 (15.7 ng/g w.w.) > ∑PFAS5 (9.9 ng/g w.w.) > ∑Pesticides9 (6.7 ng/g w.w.) > ∑PBDE4 (2.7 ng/g w.w.), and Hg (0.3 μg/g d.w.) compared to an Arctic migratory seabird in which several contaminant-related stress responses have been observed. Black guillemots in poorer condition tended to display higher levels of contaminants, higher levels of reactive oxygen metabolites, lower plasmatic antioxidant capacity, and shorter telomere lengths; however the low sample size restrict any strong conclusions. Nevertheless, our data suggests that nonlinear relationships with a threshold may exist between accumulated contaminant concentrations and physiological status of the birds. These findings were used to build a hypothesis to be applied in future modelling for describing how chronic exposure to contaminants may be linked to telomere dynamics.

The high acidity of mercury ions (Hg²⁺) contained wastewater can complicate its safe disposal. MgAl-LDHs supported [SnS₄]⁴⁻ clusters were synthesized for Hg²⁺ removal from acid wastewater. The active sites of [SnS₄]⁴⁻ clusters were inserted into the interlayers of MgAl-LDHs using an ion-exchange method. The experimental results indicated that [SnS₄]⁴⁻/MgAl-LDHs composite can obtain higher than 99% Hg²⁺ removal efficiency under low pH values. The maximum mercury adsorption capacity is 360.6 mg g⁻¹. It indicated that [SnS₄]⁴⁻ clusters were the primary active sites for mercury uptake, existing as stable Hg₂(SnS₄) on the surface of the composite. Under low pH values, such a composite seems like a “net” for HgSO₄ molecules, exhibiting great potential for mercury removal from acid solutions. Moreover, the co-exist metal ions such as Zn²⁺, Na⁺, Cd²⁺, Cr³⁺, Pb²⁺, Co²⁺, and Ni²⁺ have no significant influences on Hg²⁺ removal. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics were also studied, indicating that the adsorption mechanism follows a monolayer chemical adsorption model. The [SnS₄]⁴⁻/MgAl-LDHs composite exhibits a great potential for Hg²⁺ removal from acid wastewater.

Intensive farming practices are typically used for aquaculture. To prevent disease outbreaks, antibiotics are often used to reduce pathogenic bacteria in aquaculture animals. However, the effects of antibiotics on water quality and microbial communities in euryhaline fish culture ponds are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the interactions between sulfamethoxazole (SMX), water quality and microbial communities in milkfish (Chanos chanos) culture ponds. The results of small-scale milkfish pond experiments indicated that the addition of SMX decreased the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and photosynthetic bacteria. Consequently, the levels of ammonia and total phosphorus in the fish pond water increased, causing algal and cyanobacterial blooms to occur. In contrast, the addition of the SMX-degrading bacterial strains A12 and L effectively degraded SMX and reduced the levels of ammonia and total phosphorus in fish pond water. Furthermore, the abundances of AOB, NOB and photosynthetic bacteria were restored, and algal and cyanobacterial blooms were inhibited. This study demonstrate the influences of SMX on water quality and microbial community composition in milkfish culture ponds. Moreover, the use of the bacterial strains A12 and L as dual function (bioaugmentation and water quality maintenance) beneficial bacteria was shown to provide an effective approach for the bioremediation of SMX-contaminated euryhaline milkfish culture ponds.

Fly ash (FA), a solid waste generated in thermal power plants, is considered an environmental pollutant. Therefore, measures must be taken to dispose of FA in an environmentally friendly manner. In this paper, an electrospinning technique was employed to incorporate FA particles onto zinc oxide nanofibers (ZnO NFs), and the product (FA/ZnO composite) was used for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from the water. Herein, ZnO NFs may serve as effective semiconductor photocatalysts and provide sufficient surface area for FA, while the FA particles serve as an effective adsorbent. The adsorption capacity and photocatalytic efficiency of the as-synthesized nanocomposite fibers were enhanced compared to those of the pristine ZnO NFs, and this result is attributed to the uniform distribution of FA on the surface of the ZnO NFs. The as-synthesized nanocomposite could have great significance in wastewater treatment.

The major objective of the current study is to estimate the groundwater quality and identify the likely sources of contamination in Chandigarh, India. Total 80 groundwater samples were collected from different locations and at various depths in the study area. Further, physcio-chemical analysis was done to estimate pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids, total hardness (TH), total alkalinity (TA), Na+, K+, Cl−, SO42−, PO43− and NO3−. The groundwater samples collected from shallow water sources were observed to contain higher amount of dissolved salts. EC, TA, Cl−, TH, Na+, and K+ were found relatively higher in the shallow aquifer (<150 ft). Based on the location of pollution sources at the surface and consecutive geo-statistical distribution of physicochemical characteristics, this study suggests that non-scientific disposal of municipal solid waste, dumping of industrial waste and agricultural activities, in the nearby areas, could lead to deterioration of groundwater of shallow aquifer. These observations were also confirmed using various water quality indices and outcomes of multivariate modeling, including principal component analysis. Health risk assessment for nitrates indicated that 29 groundwater samples pose non-carcinogenic health risk for children due to dermal and oral exposure. Hence, there is a need to establish a system for regularly assessing the groundwater quality so as to minimize public health risks.

Previous studies have linked ambient PM₂.₅ to decreased pulmonary function, but the influence of specific chemical elements and emission sources on the severe asthmatic is not well understood. We examined the mass, chemical constituents, and sources of PM₂.₅ for short-term associations with the pulmonary function of adults with severe asthma in a low air pollution environment in urban Nagasaki, Japan. We recruited 35 asthmatic adults and obtained the daily record of morning peak expiratory flow (PEF) in spring 2014–2016. PM₂.₅ filters were extracted from an air quality monitoring station (178 days) and measured for 27 chemical elements. Source apportionment was performed using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). We fitted generalized linear model with generalized estimating equation (GEE) method to estimate changes in PEF (from personal monthly maximum) and odds of severe respiratory deterioration (first ≥ 15% PEF reduction within a 1-week interval) associated with mass, constituents, and sources of PM₂.₅, with adjustment for temperature and relative humidity. Constituent sulfate (SO₄²⁻) and PM₂.₅ from oil combustion and traffic were associated with reduced PEF. An interquartile range (IQR) increase in SO₄²⁻ (3.7 μg/m³, average lags 0–1) was associated with a decrease of 0.38% (95% confidence interval = −0.75% to −0.001%). An IQR increase in oil combustion and traffic-sourced PM₂.₅ (2.64 μg/m³, lag 1) was associated with a decrease of 0.33% (−0.62% to −0.002%). We found a larger PEF decrease associated with PM₂.₅ from dust/soil on Asian Dust days. There was no evidence linking total mass and metals to reduced pulmonary function. The ventilatory capacity of adults with severe asthma is susceptible to specific constituents/sources of PM₂.₅ such as sulfate and oil combustion and traffic despite active self-management of asthma and low air pollution levels in the study location.
