Fertilized cropping systems are important sources of nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO) to the atmosphere, and biotic and abiotic processes control the production and consumption of these gases in the soil. In fact, the inhibition of nitrification after application of urea or an ammonium-based fertilizer to agricultural soils has resulted in an efficient strategy to mitigate both N2O and NO in aerated agricultural soils. Therefore, the NO and N2O mitigation capacity of a novel nitrification inhibitor (NI), 2-(3,4- dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl) succinic acid isomeric mixture (DMPSA), has been studied in a winter wheat crop. A high temporal resolution of fluxes of NO and NO2, obtained by using automatic chambers for urea (U) and urea with DMPSA, allowed a better understanding of the temporal net emissions of these gases under field conditions. Seventy-five days after fertilization, the effective reduction of nitrification by DMPSA significantly decreased the production of NO with respect to the treatment without it, giving net consumption of NO in the soil ( 61.72 g-N ha 1 ) for U þ DMPSA in comparison to net production (227.44 g-N ha 1 ) for U. The explanation of NO deposition after NI application, due to biotic and abiotic processes in the soil-plant system, supposes a challenge that needs to be studied in the future. In the case of N2O, the addition of DMPSA significantly mitigated the emissions of this gas by 71%, though the total N2O emissions in both fertilized treatments were significantly greater than those of the control (43.69 gN ha 1 ). Regarding the fertilized treatments, no significant effect of DMPSA in comparison to urea alone was observed on grain yield nor bread-making wheat quality. To sum up, we got a significant reduction of N2O and NO with the addition of DMPSA, without a loss in yield and quality parameters in wheat.

International audience | A severe air quality degradation event occurred in the Santiago Metropolitan Area (SMA), Chile, in June 2014. Meteorological and air quality measurements from 11 stations in the area as well as numerical simulations using the Weather and Research Forecasting (WRF) model were used to explain the main reasons for the occurrence of elevated particulate matter (PM) concentrations. The conditions were characterized with formation of a coastal low in central Chile between the southeastern anticyclone and a high-pressure system over Argentina. At a local scale, these conditions generated a depression at the base of the inversion layer, an increase in the vertical thermal stability, lower humidity and low-wind conditions, which were conducive to a decrease in pollutant dispersion and insufficient ventilation of the polluted air. Measurements and simulations using the WRF model revealed a vertical structure of the boundary layer during these stagnant conditions and provided a basis for a trajectory analysis. The back-trajectory calculation showed that the transport of air parcels was contained in the valley during the highest concentrations. The analysis also enabled the definition of the threshold values of a simple indicator of air pollution (ventilation coefficient, VC), which confirmed the evolution of the episode and divided the observed daily concentrations into two groups, with one including values above the limits prescribed by the national air quality standards (NAQS) and the other including values below these limits. For the SMA, the daily PM concentrations above the NASQ limits were associated with an overall mean threshold value of VC below 500 m2 s−1 (for PM2.5) and 300 m2 s−1 (for PM10). To apply the VC analysis to other pollutants and different geographic locations, different threshold values should be evaluated.

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [ADD1_IRSTEA]Systèmes aquatiques soumis à des pressions multiples | International audience | The interpretation of biomarkers in natura should be based on a referential of expected values in uncontaminated conditions. Nevertheless, to build a reference data set of biomarker responses in estuarine areas, which receive chronic pollution loads due to their transition position between continent and sea, is impossible. In this context, the aim of the present work was to propose the use of laboratory recovery period to define a baseline for the measurement of sperm DNA damage by Comet assay in the estuarine prawn Palaemon longirostris. For that, sperm DNA integrity was observed after both a passive (i.e. 20 days in a clean environment) and an active (i.e. forced renewal of spermatophores) recovery of wild P. longirostris specimens from the Seine estuary, in laboratory conditions. Then, the levels of sperm DNA damage recorded within the P. longirostris population of the Seine estuary, during six campaigns of sampling from April 2015 to October 2017, have been interpreted according to the defined threshold values. The results showed a persistence in the level of DNA damage after 20-day in clean environment with the passive recovery. This strategy was inconclusive to reach a baseline level but it revealed the lack of DNA repair mechanisms. For the active recovery, a decrease of 54% of the level of DNA damage has been observed after the first renewal of spermatophores and this level stabilized after the second renewal. On the basis of this second strategy, we defined a mean basal value of sperm DNA damage of 54.9 A.U. and a maximum threshold of 69.7 A.U. (i.e. 95 %CI). The analysis of the results using the reference value highlighted significant abnormal sperm DNA damage within the native population of P. longirostris from the Seine estuary on all stations during the six-sampling campaigns.

International audience | It is a great challenge to identify the many and varied sources of soil heavy metal pollution. Often little information is available regarding the anthropogenic factors and enterprises that could potentially pollute soils. In this study we use freely available geographical data from a search engine in conjunction with machine learning methodologies to identify and classify potentially polluting enterprises in the Yangtze Delta, China. The data were classified into 31 separate and four integrated industry types by five different machine learning approaches. Multinomial naive Bayesian (NB) methods achieved an accuracy of 87% and Kappa coefficient of 0.82 and were used to classify the geographic data from more than 260,000 enterprises. The relationship between the different industry classes and measurements of soil cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) concentrations was explored using bivariate local Moran's I analysis. The analysis revealed areas where different industry classes had led to soil pollution. In the case of Cd, elevated concentrations also occurred in some areas because of excessive fertilization and coal mining. This study provides a new approach to investigate the interaction between anthropogenic pollution and natural sources of soil heavy metals to inform pollution control and planning decisions regarding the location of industrial sites. International audience | A novel FeSiCa rich material (IS), chicken manure (CM) and its biochar were investigated for their efficiency in simultaneous remediation of Cd and As uptake by the vegetable Brassica chinensis L. Wet chemistry analysis and X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy as well as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to reveal the mechanisms responsible for Cd and As fixation in the amended soils. The IS treatment performed best in reducing Cd uptake, while the combination of IS and CM was the optimal one for As fixation. The precipitation/co-precipitation (in cadmium silicate/phosphate/phosphate hydroxide, cadmium iron and manganese oxides under alkaline conditions, and calcium/magnesium/ferric arsenates) and specific chemisorption (by amorphous iron/manganese oxides) were proved to be more efficient in simultaneously lowering As and Cd phytoavailability than was organic complexation. These findings demonstrate that FeSiCa and FeSiCaC amendments are highly efficient and promising in-situ remediation systems for safe crop production on soils contaminated with Cd and As.

International audience | Radioactive contamination of the natural areas is one of the most long-lasting anthropogenic impacts on the environment. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) is a promising organism for radiation-related research because of its high radiosensitivity, but the genome size of Pinacea species has imposed obstacles for high-throughput studies so far. In this work, we conducted the analysis of the de novo assembled transcriptome of Scots pine populations growing in the Chernobyl-affected zone, which is still today contaminated with radionuclides because of the accident at the nuclear power plant in 1986. The transcriptome profiles indicate a clear pattern of adaptive stress response, which seems to be dose-dependent. The transcriptional response indicates a continuous modulation of the cellular redox system, enhanced expression of chaperones and histones, along with the control of ions balance. Interestingly, the activity of transposable element families is inversely correlated to the exposure levels to radiation. These adaptive responses, which are triggered by radiation doses 30 times lower than the one accepted as a safe for biota species by international regulations, suggest that the environmental management in radiation protection should be reviewed.

The impact of ozone (O3) pollution events on the plant drought response needs special attention because spring O3 episodes are often followed by summer drought. By causing stomatal sluggishness, O3 could affect the stomatal dynamic during a subsequent drought event. In this context, we studied the impact of O3 exposure and water deficit (in the presence or in the absence of O3 episode) on the stomatal closure/opening mechanisms relative to irradiance or vapour pressure deficit (VPD) variation. Two genotypes of Populus nigra x deltoides were exposed to various treatments for 21 days. Saplings were exposed to 80 ppb/day O3 for 13 days, and then to moderate drought for 7 days. The curves of the stomatal response to irradiance and VPD changes were determined after 13 days of O3 exposure, and after 21 days in the case of subsequent water deficit, and then fitted using a sigmoidal model. The main responses under O3 exposure were stomatal closure and sluggishness, but the two genotypes showed contrasting responses. During stomatal closure induced by a change in irradiance, closure was slower for both genotypes. Nonetheless, the genotypes differed in stomatal opening under light. Carpaccio stomata opened more slowly than control stomata, whereas Robusta stomata tended to open faster. These effects could be of particular interest, as stomatal impairment was still present after O3 exposure and could result from imperfect recovery. Under water deficit alone, we observed slower stomatal closure in response to VPD and irradiance, but faster stomatal opening in response to irradiance, more marked in Carpaccio. Under the combined treatment, most of the parameters showed antagonistic responses. Our results highlight that it is important to take genotype-specific responses and interactive stress cross-talk into account to improve the prediction of stomatal conductance in response to various environmental modifications.

International audience | Amphibians are now recognized as the most endangered group. One of this decline causes is the degradation of their habitat through direct contamination of water, soil leaching, or runoff from surrounding contaminated soils and environments. In the North of France, the extensive industrial activities resulted in massive soil contamination by metal compounds. Mineral amendments were added to soils to decrease trace metal mobility. Because of the large areas to be treated, the use of inexpensive industrial by-products was favored. Two types of fly ashes were both tested in an experimental site with the plantation of trees in 2000. Aim of the present work was to investigate the effects of extracts from metal-contaminated soils treated or not for 10 years with fly ashes on Xenopus laevis oocyte using cell biology approaches. Indeed, our previous studies have shown that the Xenopus oocyte is a relevant model to study the metal ion toxicity. Survival and maturation of oocyte exposed to the soil extracts were evaluated by phenotypic approaches and electrophysiological recordings. An extract derived from a metal-contaminated soil treated for 10 years with sulfo-calcic ashes induced the largest effects. Membrane integrity appeared affected and ion fluxes in exposed oocytes were changed. Thus, it appeared that extracted elements from certain mineral amendments used to prevent the mobility of metals in the case of highly metal-contaminated soils could have a negative impact on X. laevis oocytes.

Microplastics (MP) in sediments from discharge sites for wastewater and deposition sites in deep regions in an urban fjord in Norway were extracted by density separation in a Microplastic Sediment Separator with ZnCl2. Particles (>11 μm) were identified using FTIR. Twenty different polymer types were identified, at concentrations from 12,000 to 200,000 particles kg−1 dw. Over 95% of the MP were smaller than 100 μm. High deposition of small MP agreed with known areas for organic deposition. Polyurethane acrylate resins dominated the small MP while polyamide fibers dominated the larger MP. Particles >500 μm showed different maximum concentrations and spatial distribution from the smaller particles. This study is the first to report concentration ranges of identified plastic particles from a Norwegian fjord, down to sizes below the limit of visual identification. The results provides a baseline for future comparison, and point at relevant sizes for environmental risk assessments.
