Black carbon (BC) aerosol emitted in incomplete combustion processes is known for causing warming in the climate system also poses serious health issues. Identification of the sources of BC is essential for the development of mitigation strategies to regulate their effects in changing climate. Among different observational and analytical techniques currently available, source apportionment methods based on optical measurements are relatively simple. For example, ‘Aethalometer model’ was developed based on Aethalometer observations. However, there are a few limitations with this model arising from assumption of wavelength and angstrom exponent pairs. We have developed an empirical method which also relies on Aethalometer observations named as ‘Two alpha method’ which assumes angstrom exponent from fossil fuel as 1 and estimates bio-mass fraction and angstrom exponent for bio-mass burning. This method has been applied to Aethalometer observations from five different locations (rural, semi-urban and urban) over Indian sub-continent to quantify sources of BC. Fossil fuel is found to be the major source of BC (∼70%) irrespective of the location. Collocated measurements of Carbon Monoxide (CO) over rural site correlated well with derived bio-mass fraction. Results from this study demonstrated the capabilities of empirical method and shall provide spatio-temporal variability in sources of BC if applied to more locations.

We measured the concentrations of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in some biotic samples which can serve as human foodstuffs and ambient environments including air and river water from an agricultural area of Chongqing, western China. Fish samples exhibited highest OPEs levels (960 ng/g lipid weight) among the biota, followed by chicken (676 ng/g lw), cattle (545 ng/g lw) and pigs (535 ng/g lw). Tributyl phosphate (TNBP), tris (2-methylpropyl) (TIBP) and chlorinated OPEs were the major analogs in biotic samples, which appeared similar with the patterns from river water and outdoor air, but apparently different from indoor air. To further investigate the influence of ambient environment on the distribution of OPEs in biota, we analyzed the correlation between OPEs concentrations in ambient environment and biological samples, and the results revealed that most of the samples (except for pig samples) heavily correlated with outdoor air, whereas only fish and cattle samples were strongly correlated with river water. The partitioning behaviors of OPEs among biota, air and river water were also studied through calculating the biota-water accumulation factors (BWAFs), biota-air accumulation factors (BAAFs) and air-water partitioning factor (AWPFs). Significantly linear correlations (P < 0.05) were observed between log (BWAFs) and log (KOW) values, and between log (AWPFs) and log H (Henry's law constants), nevertheless log (BAAFs) was increasing along with the log (KOA) values. The daily intake (DI) values were estimated via foodstuffs ingestion and environmental exposure. The estimated DI values of OPEs from food and ambient environments were 1.78 ng/kg-bw/day, 1.23 ng/kg-bw/day and 1.42 ng/kg-bw/day in toddlers, children and adults, respectively, which lay at the low end of the reported data and well below the reference dose (RfD).

In this study, we develop a new composite material of Fe-Cu/D407 composite via using nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) with copper deposited on chelating resin (D407) to remove nitrate from the water. The experimental results show that a remarkable nitrate removal and the selectivity of N₂ are 99.9% and 89.7%, respectively, under the anaerobic conditions of Cu/Fe molar ratio of 1:2, pH = 3.0. Even without of inert gas and adjusting the initial pH of the solution, the removal rate of nitrate by Fe-Cu/D407 reached to 85% and the selectivity of nitrogen reached to 55%. Meanwhile, the Fe-Cu/D407 maintained preferable removal efficiency of nitrate (100% - 92%) over a wide pH range of 3–11. In addition, the removal rate of the drinking water, lake water and wastewater from the Fe-Cu/D407 is still very high and the reactivity of Fe-Cu/D407 was relatively unaffected by the presence of dissolved ions in the waters tested. Moreover, the synergetic effect of Fe, Cu and D407 in the composite Fe-Cu/D407 were well investigated for the first time according to the analyses of TPR, XPS and EIS. The catalytic mechanism and denitrification routes were also proposed.

China has performed crop residue burning (CRB) for a long time and has suffered from resultant environmental pollution. High temporal resolution has not been fully discussed in attempts to address the temporal and spatial impact of CRB in China on air quality. Our study used the MOD14A1 product of the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) to extract the daily CRB for China during the period from 2014 to 2016, and the daily aerosol optical depth (AOD) provided by MODIS Collection 6 was obtained to simultaneously reflect the air pollution. First, the study area was classified into five subregions. A temporal analysis was conducted on the daily variation in the number of CRB events and the regional mean value of AOD, the spatial contribution ratio of CRB on aerosol pollution was then calculated, and finally, a temporal and spatial Pearson correlation was calculated to find the spatially varying relationship between CRB and aerosol. The results suggest the following: (1) CRB possesses seasonal characteristics that are associated with the harvest time or sowing time of major crops in the region. (2) The impact of CRB on aerosol was delayed by 1–6 days. (3) High contribution ratios (70%–90%) occurred in northeast China on a large scale; even when the impact of the CRB on aerosol pollution in the Huang-Huai-Hai river basin occurred on a large scale, the value was merely approximately 30%. Relatively low contributions of CRB have been found in other places, whereas the contribution of CRB was severe in some places with high-density populations. (4) Temporal-spatial correlation provided an accurate index to reflect the correlation of CRB and aerosol in a specific location, which suggests that, in places with large scale and dense CRB, CRB tends to have a high positive correlation with aerosol pollution for each day.

In the present study, the 16S-rRNA sequencing of heavy metal-resistant and susceptible bacterial strains isolated from the industrial and agriculture soil showed resemblance with Pseudomonas taiwanensis. Based on the growth rate, two bacterial strains SJPS_KUD54 and KUD-MBBT4 exhibited 10 ppm tolerance to Arsenic and Cadmium. These two heavy metals caused, a significant increase in stress enzymes like superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione S-transferase activities in SJPS_KUD54 when compared to KUD-MBBT4. Following heavy metal treatment, the atomic-force-microscopy observations showed no change in the cell-wall of SJPS_KUD54, whereas the cell-wall of KUD-MBBT4 got ruptured. Moreover, the protein-profile of SJPS_KUD54 treated with heavy metals exhibited varied patterns in comparison with untreated control. In addition, the accumulation of hydroxyl, thiol and amides were found in the SJPS_KUD54 relative to its control. Furthermore, the resistant SJPS_KUD54 strain showed a remarkable bioaccumulation properties to both Arsenic and Cadmium. Thus, it is inferred that the growth rate, stress enzymes and functional-groups play a significant role in the physiological-adaption of SJPS_KUD54 during stress conditions, which is positively involved in the prevention or repair mechanism for reducing the risks caused by heavy metal stress.

Biological sulfate removal is challenging in cold climates due to the slower metabolism of mesophilic bacteria; however, cold conditions also offer the possibility to isolate bacteria that have adapted to low temperatures. The present research focused on the cold acclimation and characterization of sulfate-reducing bacterial (SRB) consortia enriched from an Arctic sediment sample from northern Finland. Based on 16S rDNA analysis, the most common sulfate-reducing bacterium in all enriched consortia was Desulfobulbus, which belongs to the δ-Proteobacteria. The majority of the cultivated consortia were able to reduce sulfate at temperatures as low as 6 °C with succinic acid as a carbon source. The sulfate reduction rates at 6 °C varied from 13 to 42 mg/L/d. The cultivation medium used in this research was a Postgate medium supplemented with lactate, ethanol or succinic acid. The obtained consortia were able to grow with lactate and succinic acid but surprisingly not with ethanol. Enriched SRB consortia are useful for the biological treatment of sulfate-containing industrial wastewaters in cold conditions.

Zhai, Yuanzheng | Zheng, Fuxin | Zhao, Xiaobing | Xia, Xuelian | Teng, Yanguo
Concentrations of common pollutants in groundwater continue to increase, and emerging pollutants are also increasingly found worldwide, thereby increasingly impacting human activities. In this new situation, it is necessary, albeit more difficult, to once again recognize the hydrochemical genesis of groundwater and to subsequently screen the typical pollutants. Taking the groundwater of the Songnen Plain of Northeast China as an example, the hydrochemical genesis was identified using space interpolation, characteristic element ratio and factor analysis methods based on 368 groundwater samples. Subsequently, the typical pollutants with potential impacts on the health of the local residents were screened by the index system method newly established. All the measured hydrochemical compositions show an obvious spatial variation, with a uniform hydrochemical type of HCO3–Ca in the whole area. Both the major compositions (K, Na, Ca, Mg, HCO3, Cl and SO4) and trace compositions (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, As, F, I and Se) are mainly protogenetic in an environment impacted by the lixiviation of groundwater in the migration process in the strata, although these compositions have been impacted by human activities to varying degrees. The mass concentration of NO3–N has exceeded most of the major compositions except for HCO3 and Ca, which means the nitrogen pollution problem is already very serious; and this problem is mainly caused by the utilization of fertilizers and the discharge of industrial wastewater and domestic sewage. Human activities have obviously disrupted the natural dynamic balance of these chemicals between the environment and the groundwater, thereby intensifying the release of F, Fe and Mn from the environment. TDS, total hardness, tri-nitrogen, F, Fe, Mn, Pb and As in some parts are found to exceed the standards of groundwater quality to varying degrees. As, Pb, Fe, NO3–N, NO2–N, Mn, F and NH4–N are finally screened as the typical pollutants.

2019
Broadmeadow, S.B. | Nisbet, T.R. | Forster, J.
A key criterion of the UK Government's policy on sustainable forest management is safeguarding the quality and quantity of water. Forests and forestry management practices can have profound effects on the freshwater environment. Poor forest planning or management can severely damage water resources at great cost to other water users; in contrast good management that restores and maintains the natural functions of woodland can benefit the whole aquatic ecosystem.Forests and forest management practices can affect surface water acidification. Monitoring of water chemistry in ten forest and two moorland acid-sensitive catchments in upland Wales commenced in 1991. The streams were selected to supplement the United Kingdom Upland Waters Monitoring Network (UWMN) with additional examples of afforested catchments. Analysis of 22 years of water chemistry data revealed trends indicative of recovery from acidification. Excess sulphate exhibited a significant coherent decline, accompanied by increases in pH and “charge-balance based” acid neutralising capacity (CB-ANC). Alkalinity and “alkalinity-based” acid neutralising capacity (AB-ANC) exhibited fewer trends, possibily due to the variable responses of the organic - carbonate species to increasing pH in these low alkalinity streams. Whilst total anthropogenic acidity declined, dissolved organic carbon and Nitrate-Nitrogen (NNO₃) concentrations have risen, and the contribution of NNO₃ to acidification has increased.Between-stream variability was analysed using Principal Component Analysis of the trend slopes. Hierarchical clustering of the changes in stream water chemistry indicated three distinct clusters with no absolute distinction between moorland and forest streams. Redundancy analysis was used to test for significant site-specific variables that explained differences in the trend slopes, with rainfall, crop age, base cation concentration and forest cover being significant explanatory variables.

Cryoconite is a dark, dusty aggregate of mineral particles, organic matter, and microorganisms transported by wind and deposited on glacier surfaces. It can accelerate glacier melting and alter glacier mass balances by reducing the surface albedo of glaciers. Biomass burning in the Tibetan Plateau, especially in the glacier cryoconites, is poorly understood. Retene, levoglucosan, mannosan and galactosan can be generated by the local fires or transported from the biomass burning regions over long distances. In the present study, we analyzed these four molecular markers in cryoconites of seven glaciers from the northern to southern Tibetan Plateau. The highest levels of levoglucosan and retene were found in cryoconites of the Yulong Snow Mountain and Tienshan glaciers with 171.4 ± 159.4 ng g⁻¹ and 47.0 ± 10.5 ng g⁻¹ dry weight (d.w.), respectively. The Muztag glacier in the central Tibetan Plateau contained the lowest levels of levoglucosan and retene with mean values of 59.8 ng g⁻¹ and 0.4 ± 0.1 ng g⁻¹ d.w., respectively. In addition, the vegetation changes and the ratios of levoglucosan to mannosan and retene indicate that combustion of conifers significantly contributes to biomass burning of the cryoconites in the Yulong Snow Mountain and Tienshan glacier. Conversely, biomass burning tracers in cryoconites of Dongkemadi, Yuzhufeng, Muztag, Qiyi and Laohugou glaciers are derived from the combustion of different types of biomass including softwood, hardwood and grass.

2019

The correlation between endocrine active contaminants in the environment and alterations in reproductive development of Sarotherodon melanotheron from Lagos lagoon has been investigated. Sediment and a total of 155 fish (74 males and 81 females) were collected between November 2014–March 2015 from selected contaminated sites (Ikorodu, Oworonshoki, Makoko and Idumota) and a putative control site (Igbore) along the lagoon. Sediment contaminant analysis revealed, significantly higher concentration of lindane, dieldrin, 4-iso-nonylphenol, 4-t-octylphenol and monobutyltin cation at the contaminated sites. Examination of gross morphological and histological changes of fish gonads showed a 27.4% prevalence of intersex in the sampled fish, of which 78% were males (testes-ova) and 22% were females (ovo-testis). Quantitative PCR (qPCR) of liver transcripts revealed the presence of vitellogenin (vtg) levels in male fish from contaminated sites. Zona radiata proteins (zrp) mRNA levels were significantly higher in females, compared to male fish. In general, significantly lower vtg and zrp transcripts levels were recorded at Igbore (control site), compared with contaminated sites. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed site and sex relationship in biological responses and contaminants, including trace metals, demonstrating that measured endocrine responses in fish were associated with contaminant burden in sediment. In addition, positive relationships were observed in male fish from Idumota, Oworonshoki and Ikorodu with vtg and dieldrin/4-iso-nonyphenol, with higher levels in male fish, compared to females. Further, contaminants from the Makoko, Oworonshoki and Ikorodu sites were positively associated with higher GSI and zrp in females. More importantly, the severity of intersex and changes in vtg transcripts imply a progressive feminization of male fish with concomitant alteration in the reproductive health of fish inhabiting the Lagos lagoon.
