Wavelet transform-based artificial neural networks (WT-ANN) in PM10 pollution level estimation, based on circular variables

INTRODUCTION: In this paper, a novel method in the estimation and prediction of PM10 is introduced using wavelet transform-based artificial neural networks (WT-ANN). DISCUSSION: First, the application of wavelet transform, selected for its temporal shift properties and multiresolution analysis characteristics enabling it to reduce disturbing perturbations in input training set data, is presented. Afterward, the circular statistical indices which are used in this method are formally introduced in order to investigate the relation between PM10 levels and circular meteorological variables. Then, the results of the simulation of PM10 based on WT-ANN by use of MATLAB software are discussed. The results of the above-mentioned simulation show an enhanced accuracy and speed in PM10 estimation/prediction and a high degree of robustness compared with traditional ANN models.

INTRODUCTION: The reuse of wastewaters for agricultural purposes is a common practice in many countries and is increasingly recommended by organizations that promote sustainable development. Yet, it is restricted by the potential negative impact of these materials on soil and crops. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the environmental impact of walnut husk washing waters (WHWW) and their organic fractions, in order to conceive their agricultural exploitation. DISCUSSION: Phytotoxicity tests and morphological investigations on representative plant species of horticultural interest indicated that WHWW and their organic fractions can elicit a concentration-dependent stimulating effect on the growth of radish, lettuce cv. cavolo Napoli with effects up to 165 %. An opposite inhibitory effect up to 70 % was observed on spinach and lettuce cv. Gentilina. Proapoptotic effects were observed by acridine orange/ethidium bromide assay in the species inhibited by WHWW treatment. High-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis of the WHWW revealed the presence of a main component which was extracted selectively in organic solvents and purified by preparative chromatography. Complete spectral analysis allowed identification as 4,8-dihydroxy-1-tetralone, commonly known as regiolone. Regiolone exhibited the same concentration-dependent activity on root elongation with a stimulation in the case of radish up to 135 % with respect to control. These results open perspectives in the exploitation of WHWW and the main phenolic constituent readily available by a straightforward isolation procedure as a natural fertilizer for specific crops.

INTRODUCTION: The ecological risks posed by three chlorophenols (CPs), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP), and pentachlorophenol (PCP) in Chinese surface waters were assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was achieved by applying a tiered ecological risk assessment (ERA) approach ranging from deterministic methods to probabilistic options to measured concentrations of CPs in surface water of seven major watersheds and three drainage regions in China and the chronic toxicity data for indigenous Chinese species. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The results show that the risks of three chlorophenols are ranked PCP>2,4-DCP≈2,4,6-TCP. PCP posed little ecological risk while 2,4-DCP and 2,4,6-TCP posed negligible or de minimis risk in Chinese surface water. However, the risks varied with different river basins, for example, PCP posed some ecological risk in the Yangtze, Huaihe, and Pearl Rivers. The magnitude of 2,4-DCP and 2,4,6-TCP pollution in North China was more serious than that in South China. CONCLUSION: The probabilistic risk assessment approach, which can provide more information for risk managers and decision makers, was favored over the screening-level single-value estimate method. However, the results from all tiers of the ERA methods in the framework were consistent with each other.

BACKGROUND, AIM AND SCOPE: Groundwaters and source waters are exposed to environmental pollution due to agricultural and industrial activities that can enhance the leaching of organic contaminants. Pesticides are among the most widely studied compounds in groundwater, but little information is available on the presence of phthalates, alkylphenols and bisphenol A. These compounds are used in pesticide formulations and represent an emerging family of contaminants due to their widespread environmental presence and endocrine-disrupting properties. Knowledge on the occurrence of contaminants in source waters intended for bottling is important for sanitary and regulatory purposes. So the aim of the present study was to evaluate the presence of phthalates, alkylphenols, triazines, chloroacetamides and bisphenol A throughout 131 Spanish water sources intended for bottling. Waters studied were spring waters and boreholes which have a protection diameter to minimize environmental contamination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Waters were solid-phase extracted (SPE) and analysed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Quality control analysis comprising recovery studies, blank analysis and limits of detection were performed. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Using SPE and GC-MS, the 21 target compounds were satisfactorily recovered (77–124 %) and limits of quantification were between 0.0004 and 0.029 μg/L for pesticides, while for alkylphenols, bisphenol A and phthalates the limits of quantification were from 0.0018 μg/L for octylphenol to 0.970 μg/L for bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate. Among the 21 compounds analysed, only 9 were detected at levels between 0.002 and 1.115 μg/L. Compounds identified were triazine herbicides, alkylphenols, bisphenol A and two phthalates. Spring waters or shallow boreholes were the sites more vulnerable to contaminants. Eighty-five percent of the samples did not contain any of the target compounds. CONCLUSIONS: Target compounds were detected in a very low concentration and only in very few samples. This indicates the good quality of source waters intended for bottling and the effectiveness of the protection measures adopted in Spain. None of the samples analysed exceeded the maximum legislated levels for drinking water both in Spain and in the European Union.

BACKGROUND: In tropical countries, the palm tree is one of the most abundant and important trees. Date palm is a principal fruit grown in many regions of the world. It is abundant, locally available and effective material that could be used as an adsorbent for the removal of different pollutants from aqueous solution. REVIEW: This article presents a review on the role of date palm as adsorbents in the removal of unwanted materials such as acid and basic dyes, heavy metals, and phenolic compounds. Many studies on adsorption properties of various low cost adsorbent, such as agricultural waste and activated carbons based on agricultural waste have been reported in recent years. CONCLUSION: Studies have shown that date palm-based adsorbents are the most promising adsorbents for removing unwanted materials. No previous review is available where researchers can get an overview of the adsorption capacities of date palm-based adsorbent used for the adsorption of different pollutants. This review provides the recent literature demonstrating the usefulness of date palm biomass-based adsorbents in the adsorption of various pollutants.

PURPOSE: This paper presents a novel approach to interpret ground-level O3 with the measured atmospheric stability index (ASI). METHODS: O3 concentrations were monitored by automatic analysers at three types of stations: traffic site, residential site and regional background site in 2005, and the ASI was simultaneously measured by observing radon and its short-lived decay products. RESULTS: The observed results showed a clear annual variation of O3 concentrations with a maximum in spring, relatively high at the regional background site over 120 ppb, and lower at the residential and traffic sites at about 70 ppb. ASI gives information about the dilution properties of the lower boundary layer and allows to highlight the relevant role of the dilution factor in determining atmospheric pollution events. We demonstrated the analysis of O3 night peak episodes with vertical wind and ASI. CONCLUSIONS: With the advantage of ASI and vertical wind profiles, it was possible to isolate particular photochemical pollution phenomena of O3 peaks from the free troposphere reservoir or formed by local reactions. This shows that the index constitutes a powerful and valuable tool for describing O3 night-peak episodes at background station.

PURPOSE: Biodesulfurization (BDS) has the potential to desulfurize dibenzothiophene (DBT) and its alkylated derivatives, the compounds that are otherwise refractory to hydrodesulfurization (HDS). Thermophilic microorganisms are more appropriate to be used for BDS applications following HDS. The aim of the present study was to isolate a thermophilic microorganism and to explore its commercial relevance for BDS process. METHODS: The desulfurizing thermophilic strain was isolated and enriched from various soil and water samples using sulfur free medium (SFM) supplemented with DBT. Microbiological and genomic approach was used to characterize the strain. Desulfurization reactions were carried out using DBT and petroleum oils at 45°C followed by different analytical procedures. RESULTS: We report the isolation of a thermophilic bacterium Klebsiella sp. 13T from contaminated soils collected from petroleum refinery. HPLC analysis revealed that Klebsiella sp. 13T could desulfurize DBT to 2-hydroxybiphenyl (2-HBP) at 45°C through 4S pathway. In addition, adapted cells of Klebsiella sp. 13T were found to remove 22–53% of sulfur from different petroleum oils with highest sulfur removal from light crude oil. CONCLUSION: Klebsiella sp. 13T is a potential candidate for BDS because of its thermophilic nature and capability to desulfurize petroleum oils.

INTRODUCTION: Transconjugant bacteria with combined potential for hydrocarbon utilization and heavy metal resistance were suggested by earlier investigators for bioremediation of soils co-contaminated with hydrocarbons and heavy metals. The purpose of this study was to offer evidence that such microorganisms are already part of the indigenous soil microflora. METHODS: Microorganisms in pristine and oily soils were counted on nutrient agar and a mineral medium with oil as a sole carbon source, in the absence and presence of either sodium arsenate (As V), sodium arsenite (As III) or cadmium sulfate, and characterized via 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The hydrocarbon-consumption potential of individual strains in the presence and absence of heavy metal salts was measured. RESULTS: Pristine and oil-contaminated soil samples harbored indigenous bacteria with the combined potential for hydrocarbon utilization and As and Cd resistance in numbers up to 4 × 105 CFU g−1. Unicellular bacteria were affiliated to the following species arranged in decreasing order of predominance: Bacillus subtilis, Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, Brevibacterium linens, Alcaligenes faecalis, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Chromobacterium orangum. Filamentous forms were affiliated to Nocardia corallina, Streptomyces flavovirens, Micromonospora chalcea, and Nocardia paraffinea. All these isolates could grow on a wide range of pure aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, as sole sources of carbon and energy, and could consume oil and pure hydrocarbons in batch cultures. Low As concentrations, and to a lesser extent Cd concentrations, enhanced the hydrocarbon-consumption potential by the individual isolates. CONCLUSION: There is no need for molecularly designing microorganisms with the combined potential for hydrocarbon utilization and heavy metal resistance, because they are already a part of the indigenous soil microflora.

INTRODUCTION: Flowing of the acid mine drainage may contaminate the adjacent water bodies causing substantial changes in the aquatic ecosystem. This aspect is the most relevant problem in the southern of Santa Catarina once the contaminated areas are inserted in the watershed of the Araranguá, Urussanga, and Tubarão rivers, increasing the need for recovery studies. These areas are between Criciúma, Içara, Urussanga, Siderópolis, Lauro Müller, Orleans, and Alfredo Wagner towns where a conservation unit exist called the Environmental Preservation Area of Baleia Franca. Aiming to compare the kinetics of the ash derived from burning coal and to neutralize acid mine drainage, different neutralizer, limestone, fly, and bottom ash, was mounted on a pilot scale experiment. DISCUSSION: The transport parameters showed the same order of infiltration and dispersion: fly ash < bottom ash < limestone. The order of measured alkalinity was: limestone < fly ash < bottom ash, with pH values of 9.34, 12.07, and 12.25, respectively. The limestone kinetics of acidic drainage neutralization was first order with reaction rate constant k = 0.0963 min−1, bottom ash was 3/4 with k = 0.0723 mol1/4 L−1/4 min−1, and the fly ash had higher order kinetics, 4/3, with reaction rate constant k = 27.122 L1/3 mol−1/3 min−1. However, by mathematical modeling, it was found that due to a combination of transport and kinetics, only limestone treatment reached a pH above 6 within 5 years, corresponding to the ideal as planned.

BACKGROUND: Continuous monitoring of air quality is implemented by government institutions at fixed ambient sites. However, the correlation between fixed site measurements and exposure of individual persons to air contaminants is likely to be weak. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We measured particulate matter both outdoors and indoors by following the spatial movement of individuals. Sixteen test persons took part and carried a measurement backpack for a 24-h period. The backpack was comprised of a Grimm Aerosol Spectrometer model 1.109, a GPS device, and a video camera for tracking of human behavior. The spectrometer provided information about particle numbers and mass in 32-size classes with a high temporal resolution of 6 s. RESULTS: The personal exposure of individuals during 24 h could significantly exceed the outdoor particulate matter (PM)₁₀ concentrations measured at the fixed sites. The average 24-h exposure of all test persons for PM₁₀ varied from 27 to 322 μg m⁻³. Environmental tobacco smoke and cooking emissions were among the main indoor sources for PM. The amount of particulate matter a test person was exposed to was highly dependent on the spatial behavior and the surrounding microenvironment conditions. DISCUSSION: Large-scale experiments including personal measurements might help to improve modeling approaches to approximate the actual exposure on a statistically sound basis.
