The Yangtze River basin is one of the world's hotspots for nitrogen (N) deposition and likely plays an important role in China's riverine N output. Here we constructed a basin-scale total dissolved inorganic N (DIN) deposition (bulk plus dry) pattern based on published data at 100 observational sites between 2000 and 2014, and assessed the relative contributions of different reactive N (Nr) emission sectors to total DIN deposition using the GEOS-Chem model. Our results show a significant spatial variation in total DIN deposition across the Yangtze River basin (33.2 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ on average), with the highest fluxes occurring mainly in the central basin (e.g., Sichuan, Hubei and Hunan provinces, and Chongqing municipality). This indicates that controlling N deposition should build on mitigation strategies according to local conditions, namely, implementation of stricter control of Nr emissions in N deposition hotspots but moderate control in the areas with low N deposition levels. Total DIN deposition in approximately 82% of the basin area exceeded the critical load of N deposition for semi-natural ecosystems along the basin. On the basin scale, the dominant source of DIN deposition is fertilizer use (40%) relative to livestock (11%), industry (13%), power plant (9%), transportation (9%), and others (18%, which is the sum of contributions from human waste, residential activities, soil, lighting and biomass burning), suggesting that reducing NH3 emissions from improper fertilizer (including chemical and organic fertilizer) application should be a priority in curbing N deposition. This, together with distinct spatial variations in emission sector contributions to total DIN deposition also suggest that, in addition to fertilizer, major emission sectors in different regions of the basin should be considered when developing synergistic control measures.

The diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique is recognized to have advantages over traditional techniques. For example, the passive measurement generally follows the principle of metal uptake by plants, and its result incorporates the influences of soil properties, which may make DGT a good protocol for improving soil quality guidelines (SQGs). However, DGT has rarely been applied to assess Cd phytoavailability in soils under greenhouse vegetable production (GVP) systems. In this study, 29 turnips (Raphanussativus L.), 21 eggplants (Solanum melongena L.) and their corresponding soils were collected from GVP systems in Dongtai and Shouguang, eastern China. Simple linear regression and stepwise regression were performed using the soil Cd content and soil properties to predict the vegetable Cd content. Soil thresholds were derived based on both total and available Cd concentrations. The results showed that total Cd, DGT-measured Cd (DGT-Cd), soil-solution Cd (Soln-Cd) and CaCl2-extractable Cd (CaCl2-Cd) were all significantly correlated with vegetable Cd. DGT-Cd had the best correlation with turnip Cd. The total Cd threshold values ranged from 4.87 (pH 6.5) to 5.18 (pH 7.5) mg kg−1 for turnips and 14.60 (pH 6.5) to 14.90 (pH 7.5) mg kg−1 for eggplants. These Cd thresholds were higher than the current SQGs. The predicted of turnip Cd by DGT-Cd was not improved significantly by further considering the soil properties. The calculated soil threshold of DGT-Cd was 5.35 μg L−1 for turnips. However, the predicted soil threshold of DGT-Cd for eggplant was improved by including SOM, with R2 values from 0.53 to 0.70. The DGT-Cd threshold was calculated as 1.81 μg L−1 for eggplant (30.0 g kg−1 SOM). In conclusion, whether DGT measurements are independent of soil properties and preferable for the evaluation of Cd phytoavailability and the generation of soil thresholds remains to be clarified in future research.

The total volume of the coal processing wastes (filter cakes) produced by Russia, China, and India is as high as dozens of millions of tons per year. The concentrations of CO and CO₂ in the emissions from the combustion of filter cakes have been measured directly for the first time. They are the biggest volume of coal processing wastes. There have been many discussions about using these wastes as primary or secondary components of coal-water slurries (CWS) and coal-water slurries containing petrochemicals (CWSP). Boilers have already been operationally tested in Russia for the combustion of CWSP based on filter cakes. In this work, the concentrations of hazardous emissions have been measured at temperatures ranging from 500 to 1000°С. The produced CO and CO₂ concentrations are shown to be practically constant at high temperatures (over 900°С) for all the coal processing wastes under study. Experiments have shown the feasibility to lowering the combustion temperatures of coal processing wastes down to 750–850°С. This provides sustainable combustion and reduces the CO and CO₂ emissions 1.2–1.7 times. These relatively low temperatures ensure satisfactory environmental and energy performance of combustion. Using CWS and CWSP instead of conventional solid fuels significantly reduces NOₓ and SOₓ emissions but leaves CO and CO₂ emissions practically at the same level as coal powder combustion. Therefore, the environmentally friendly future (in terms of all the main atmospheric emissions: CO, CO₂, NOₓ, and SOₓ) of both CWS and CWSP technologies relies on low-temperature combustion.

Nitrogen (N)-enriched leaching water may act as a source of indirect N₂O emission when it is discharged to agricultural drainage ditches. In this study, indirect N₂O emissions from an agricultural drainage ditch mainly receiving interflow water were measured using the static chamber-gas chromatography technique during 2012–2015 in the central Sichuan Basin in southwestern China. We found the drainage ditch was a source of indirect N₂O emissions contributing an inter-annual mean flux of 6.56 ± 1.12 μg N m⁻² h⁻¹ and a mean indirect N₂O emission factor (EF₅g) value of 0.03 ± 0.003%. The mean EF₅g value from literature review was 0.51%, which was higher than the default EF₅g value (0.25%) proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2006. Our study demonstrated that, more in situ observations of N₂O emissions as regards N leaching are required, to account for the large variation in EF₅g values and to improve the accuracy and confidence of the default EF₅g value. Indirect N₂O emissions varied with season, higher emissions occurred in summer and autumn. These seasonal variations were related to drainage water NO₃⁻-N concentration, temperature, and precipitation. Our results showed that intensive precipitation increased NO₃⁻-N concentrations and N₂O emissions, and when combined with warmer water temperatures, these may have increased the denitrification rate that led to the higher summer and autumn N₂O emissions in the studied agricultural drainage ditch.

The zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha constitutes an extensively used sentinel species for biomonitoring in European and North American freshwater systems. However, this invasive species is gradually replaced in freshwater ecosystem by Dreissena bugensis, a closely related dreissenid species that shares common morphological characteristics but possess some physiological differences. However, few are known about differences on more integrated physiological processes that are generally used as biomarkers in biological monitoring studies. Declining of zebra mussel populations raises the question of the sustainability of using one or both species indifferently to maintain the quality of environmental pollution monitoring data. In our study, we performed a field comparative study measuring immune-related markers and bioaccumulation of PCBs, PAHs and PBDEs in sympatrically occurring mussel populations from three sites of the St. Lawrence River. For tested organisms, species were identified using RFLP analysis. Measurement of bioaccumulated organic compounds indicated a higher accumulation of PCBs and PBDEs in D. bugensis soft tissues compared to D. polymorpha while no differences were noticed for PAHs. Results of hemocytic parameters highlighted that differences of hemocyte distributions were associated to modulations of phagocytic activities. Moreover, marked differences occurred in measurement of hemocytic oxidative activity, indicating divergences between the two species for ROS regulation strategies. This physiological characteristic may deeply influence species responses facing environmental or pollution related stress and induce bias if the two species are not differentiated in further biomarker or bioaccumulation measurement-based studies.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a frequent contaminant of feed and food worldwide. The toxicity of OTA on intestinal barrier was investigated in porcine intestinal epithelial cells (IPEC-J2). We observed that OTA induced intestinal barrier dysfunction as indicated by the reduction in transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and elevation in paracellular permeability to 4 kDa dextran. The barrier dysfunction was accompanied with tight junction disruption including a down-regulation in ZO-1 expression and redistribution of Occludin and ZO-1. Moreover, OTA exposure increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, elevated the intracellular calcium level ([Ca²⁺]c) and activated myosin light chain kinase (MLCK). Simultaneously, NAC, a ROS scavenger, blocked OTA-induced ROS generation, [Ca²⁺]c elevation, barrier dysfunction and tight junction disruption, suggesting that OTA-induced ROS generation may act as a trigger. Next, we found that OTA-induced MLCK activation was inhibited by BAPTA-AM, the cytosolic Ca²⁺ chelator, demonstrating that OTA-induced MLCK activation is dependent on [Ca²⁺]c elevation. Furthermore, inhibition of MLCK with ML-7 or inhibition of [Ca²⁺]c elevation with BAPTA-AM markedly prevented OTA-induced barrier dysfunction and tight junction disruption. Taken together, our results indicated that OTA induces ROS generation, and then elevates the [Ca²⁺]c and MLCK activity in turn, which finally induces barrier dysfunction and disrupts tight junction in IPEC-J2 cell monolayers.

Li, Zijian
Children can be exposed to organophosphate and carbamate mixtures, which pose additive health effects via soil exposure. However, only 23 countries have soil standard values for organophosphate and carbamate pesticides, and most regulatory jurisdictions do not consider the cumulative exposure. This study derived proposed soil standards for organophosphates and carbamates by introducing the relative potency quotient approach (RPQ). The probabilistic cumulative risk assessment was also applied to evaluate current soil standards of pesticide mixtures. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have soil standards of 19 organophosphates and five carbamates. However, these standards cannot protect population health via chronic exposure in conservative and semi-conservative scenarios based on the probabilistic risk assessment because the U.S.EPA simplified the regulatory process for the cumulative exposure to pesticide mixtures and omitted the soil allocation factor, which should be set for aggregate exposure. The analysis of proposed soil standards developed by the RPQ approach indicates that some human behavior variables, such as soil intake rate and exposure duration, have stronger impacts on the proposed soil standards than human biometric variables like body weight. This study may be helpful to develop regulatory standards and a framework for pesticide mixtures having additive health effects.

During the 2016 Hangzhou G20 Summit, the chemical composition of submicron particles (PM1) was measured by a High-Resolution Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) along with a suite of collocated instruments. The campaign was undertaken between August 5 and September 23, 2016. The impacts of emission controls and meteorological conditions on PM1 chemical composition, diurnal cycles, organic aerosol (OA) source apportionment, size distribution and elemental ratios were characterized in detail. Excluding rainy days, the mean PM1 mass concentration during G20 was 30.3 μg/m³, similar to that observed before G20 (28.6 μg/m³), but much lower than that after G20 (42.7 μg/m³). The aerosol chemistry during the three periods was substantially different. Before G20, high PM1 loading mostly occurred at daytime, with OA accounting for 60.1% of PM1, followed by sulfate (15.6%) and ammonium (9.1%). During G20, the OA fraction decreased from 60.1% to 44.6%, whereas secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) increased from 31.8% to 49.5%. After G20, SIA dominated high PM1 loading, especially at nighttime. Further analysis showed that the nighttime regional transport might play an unfavorable role in the slight increase of secondary PM1 during G20, while the strict emissions controls were implemented. The OA (O/C = 0.58) during G20 was more aged, 48.7% and 13.7% higher than that before and after G20 respectively. Our study highlighted that the emission controls during G20 were of great success in lowering locally produced aerosol and pollutants, despite of co-existence of nighttime regional transport containing aerosol high in low-volatile organics and sulfate. It was implied that not only are emissions controls on both local and regional scale important, but that the transport of pollutants needs to be sufficiently well accounted for, to ensure the successful implementation of air pollution mitigation campaigns in China.

Several monitoring studies have shown that benzoylecgonine (BE) is the main illicit drug residue commonly measured in the aquatic system worldwide. Few studies have investigated the potential toxicity of this molecule towards invertebrate and vertebrate aquatic non-target organisms focusing on effects at low levels of the biological organization, but no one has assessed the consequences at higher ones. Thus, the present study was aimed at investigating the toxicity of a 48-h exposure to two concentrations of BE, similar to those found in aquatic ecosystems (0.5 μg/L and 1.0 μg/L), on the cladoceran Daphnia magna at different levels of the ecological hierarchy. We relied on a multi-level approach focusing on the effects at biochemical/biomolecular (biomarkers), individual (swimming activity) and population (reproduction) levels. We measured the amount of reactive oxygen species and of the activity of antioxidant (SOD, CAT, and GPx) and detoxifying (GST) enzymes to assess if BE exposure can alter the oxidative status of D. magna specimens, while the lipid peroxidation (TBARS) was measured as a marker of oxidative damage. Moreover, we also measured the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity because it is strictly related to behavioral changes in aquatic organisms. Changes in swimming behavior were investigated by a video tracking analysis, while the consequences on reproduction were assessed by a chronic toxicity test. Our results showed that BE concentrations similar to those found in aquatic ecosystems induced oxidative stress and inhibited AChE activity, affecting swimming behavior and the reproduction of Daphnia magna individuals.

Jiang, Peng | Yang, Jun | Huang, Conghong | Liu, Huakui
PM₂.₅ pollution poses severe health risks to urban residents in low and middle-income countries. Existing studies have shown that the problem is affected by multiple socioeconomic factors. However, the relative contribution of these factors is not well understood, which sometimes leads to controversial controlling measures. In this study, we quantified the relative contribution of different socioeconomic factors, including the city size, industrial activities, and residents' activities, to PM₂.₅ pollution in urban China between 2014 and 2015 by using structural equation model (SEM). Our results showed that industrial activities contributed more to PM₂.₅ pollution than other factors. The city size and residents’ activities also had significant impacts on PM₂.₅ pollution. The combined influence of all socioeconomic factors could explain between 44% and 48% of variation in PM₂.₅ pollution, which indicated the existence of influences from other factors such as weather conditions and outside sources of pollutants. Findings from our study can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the socioeconomic causes of PM₂.₅ pollution.
