Aquatic animals live in an acoustic world, prone to pollution by globally increasing noise levels. Noisy human activities at sea have become widespread and continue day and night. The potential effects of this anthropogenic noise may be context-dependent and vary with the time of the day, depending on diel cycles in animal physiology and behaviour. Most studies to date have investigated behavioural changes within a single sound exposure session while the effects of, and habituation to, repeated exposures remain largely unknown. Here, we exposed groups of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in an outdoor pen to a series of eight repeated impulsive sound exposures over the course of two days at variable times of day/night. The baseline behaviour before sound exposure was different between day and night; with slower swimming and looser group cohesion observed at night. In response to sound exposures, groups increased their swimming speed, depth, and cohesion; with a greater effect during the night. Furthermore, groups also showed inter-trial habituation with respect to swimming depth. Our findings suggest that the impact of impulsive anthropogenic noise may be stronger at night than during the day for some fishes. Moreover, our results also suggest that habituation should be taken into account for sound impact assessments and potential mitigating measures.

How terrestrial ecosystem responds to global warming has received wide attention. Plant stoichiometry has the potential to reflect ecosystem responses to climate change, thus, investigating the variations in plant stoichiometry with temperature is important and necessary for revealing the responses of terrestrial ecosystem to global warming. Although many studies had explored the relationships between plant N, P stoichiometry and temperature, previous field investigations did not eliminate the interference of precipitation effect with these observed relationships. To minimize the effect of precipitation on leaf N, P stoichiometry, this investigation was conducted across a temperature gradient over broad geographical scale along the 400 mm isohyet, which extends about 6000 km in China. This study showed that leaf N did not vary, whereas leaf P decreased and leaf N:P ratio increased with increasing mean annual temperature (MAT). The responses of leaf N and P stoichiometry to MAT observed in this study might be general patterns; because they were almost ubiquitous across functional groups, genera and species examined, and moreover, they were independent of vegetation and soil type. It could be inferred from this study that global warming in future will have no effect on leaf N, but reduce leaf P and increase leaf N:P ratio. Stable leaf N and varied leaf P with changing MAT suggested that leaf N and P decoupled with changing temperature.

Urban agriculture plays an important role in sustainable food supply. However, because of the atmospheric pollution and soil contamination associated with urban areas, this activity may be of concern. In fact, contamination of soil with metals and the transference of contaminants to vegetables can represent health and safety risks associated with urban agriculture. The objective of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of selected trace metals (cadmium, copper and lead) in three lettuce cultivars produced in three different urban gardens in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, Brazil and their respective soils. Samples of lettuce and soil were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS-GF), respectively, and their transfer coefficients were calculated. The methods were optimized and were fit for the purpose. Copper was the prevalent metal found in soils and lettuce, with an average of 27.9 ± 13.9 and 0.608 ± 0.157 mg kg⁻¹ respectively, followed by lead (19.4 ± 7.7 and 0.037 ± 0.039 mg kg⁻¹), and cadmium (0.16 ± 0.03 and 0.009 ± 0.005 mg kg⁻¹). Cadmium presented the largest transfer coefficients, ranging from 0.34 to 1.84 with an average of 0.92 ± 0.45, which may indicate a potential risk of accumulation in vegetables in the case of high soil contamination. A significant positive correlation was observed (p < 0.01) between cadmium in lettuce and in soil. Even though lead concentrations varied in the soils from the different urban areas, ranging from 11.88 to 30.01 mg kg⁻¹, no significant difference (p < 0.05) was found among the lettuce, probably due to its low mobility (transfer coefficient = 0.02). The copper and cadmium levels found in lettuce indicate safe lettuce production in the three urban gardens.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), one of the most important two-dimensional layered compounds, have enabled massive developments in effective pollution treatments. Their derivative materials have also attracted multidisciplinary attention owing to the intrinsic advantages of their moderate chemiostability, low cost and nontoxicity. Over the past few decades, significant advances have been made in the synthesis of novel LDH-based composites and the optimization of characterization techniques. In this review, we give an overview of the recent advances in LDH-based nanomaterials, from a brief introduction to their preparation and modification methods to an overview of their application in the removal of radionuclides and an exploration of their underlying adsorption mechanisms. In the end, a summary and outlook are also briefly addressed. This review intends to provide deep insight into the design of high-performance LDH-based materials for the potential elimination of radionuclides from aqueous solutions during environmental pollution cleanup.

The increasing use of artificial light at night (ALAN) has led to exposure of freshwater ecosystems to light pollution worldwide. Simultaneously, the spectral composition of nocturnal illumination is changing, following the current shift in outdoor lighting technologies from traditional light sources to light emitting diodes (LED). LEDs emit broad-spectrum white light, with a significant amount of photosynthetically active radiation, and typically a high content of blue light that regulates circadian rhythms in many organisms. While effects of the shift to LED have been investigated in nocturnal animals, its impact on primary producers is unknown. We performed three field experiments in a lowland agricultural drainage ditch to assess the impacts of a transition from high-pressure sodium (HPS) to white LED illumination (color temperature 4000 K) on primary producers in periphyton. In all experiments, we compared biomass and pigment composition of periphyton grown under a natural light regime to that of periphyton exposed to nocturnal HPS or, consecutively, LED light of intensities commonly found in urban waters (approximately 20 lux). Periphyton was collected in time series (1–13 weeks). We found no effect of HPS light on periphyton biomass; however, following a shift to LED the biomass decreased up to 62%. Neither light source had a substantial effect on pigment composition. The contrasting effects of the two light sources on biomass may be explained by differences in their spectral composition, and in particular the blue content. Our results suggest that spectral composition of the light source plays a role in determining the impacts of ALAN on periphyton and that the ongoing transition to LED may increase the ecological impacts of artificial lighting on aquatic primary producers. Reduced biomass in the base of the food web can impact ecosystem functions such as productivity and food supply for higher trophic levels in nocturnally-lit ecosystems.

Air pollution forecasting is significant for public health and controlling pollution, and statistical methods are important air pollution forecasting techniques. Nevertheless, the research of AQI (air quality index) forecasting is very rare. So an accurate and stable AQI forecasting model is very urgent and necessary. For the high complex, volatile and nonlinear AQI series, this research presents a novel optimal-combined model based on CEEMD (complementary ensemble empirical mode decomposition), PSOGSA (particle swarm optimization and gravitational search algorithm), PSO (particle swarm optimization) and combined forecasting method. The proposed model effectively solves the blind combined forecasting. AQI series forecasts of five cities in North China show that the proposed model has the highest correct rate of forecasting classifications compared with the candidates. Totally, the presented model has the following advantages compared with the candidates: more robust forecasting performance, smaller forecasting error and better generalization ability.

The phenylurea herbicide, linuron (LIN), is used to control various types of weeds. Despite its efficient role in controlling weeds, it presents a persistent problem to the environment. In the current study, phytoremediation properties of transgenic CYP1A2 Arabidopsis thaliana plants to LIN were assessed. CYP1A2 gene was firstly cloned and expressed in bacteria before proceeding to plants. In presence of LIN, The growth of CYP1A2 expressing bacteria was superior compared to control bacteria transformed with the empty bacterial expression vector pET22b(+). No clear morphological changes were detected on CYP1A2 transgenic plants. However, significant resistance to LIN herbicide application either via spraying the foliar parts of the plant or via supplementation of the herbicide in the growth medium was observed for CYP1A2 transformants. Plant growth assays under LIN stress provide strong evidence for the enhanced capacity of transgenic lines to grow and to tolerate high concentrations of LIN compared to control plants. HPLC analyses showed that detoxification of LIN by bacterial extracts and/or transgenic plant leaves is improved as compared to the corresponding controls. Our data indicate that over expression of the human CYP1A2 gene increases the phytoremediation capacity and tolerance of Arabidopsis thaliana plants to the phenylurea herbicide linuron.

The occurrence of algae bloom would lead to the release of algae-derived organic matter (AOM) and then alter the abundance and behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, the characteristics and photodegradation of AOM, naturally occurring organic matter (NOM) derived from soil and plants and their mixtures were explored to reveal the potential interactions between AOM and NOM in water. Results indicated that the protein-like components from AOM and the humic-like components from SRNOM took place inter-component interactions in the AOM-NOM mixtures. Meanwhile, application of two-dimensional Fourier transform infrared correlation spectroscopic (2D-FTIR-COS) analysis revealed that carboxylic C=O had a high priority to bind with other functional groups (e.g., phenolic-OH, polysaccharides C-O, amideⅡC-N/N-H and celluloses C-H). More crucially, it was found that the AOM-NOM mixtures subjected to a very different photodegradation behavior to their end-members (i.e., AOM and NOM), likely because of the occurrence of AOM-NOM interactions as well as their roles in mediating the yield of reactive oxygen species. For instance, the presence of AOM led to increased photodegradation degrees of the chromophoric fraction in NOM. In contrast, the NOM did not exhibit any photosensitization role in the photodegradation of the proteins from AOM. This study has potential implications for our understanding of the carbon cycling in anthropogenically impacted aquatic systems such as inland rivers and lakes.

The rapid expansion of construction related to coastal development evokes great concern about environmental risks. Recent attention has been focused mainly on factors related to the effects of waterlogging, but there is urgent need to address the potential hazard caused by artificial topography: derived changes in the elemental composition of the sediments. To reveal possible mechanisms and to assess the environmental risks of artificial topography on transition of elemental composition in the sediment at adjoining zones, a nest-random effects-combined investigation was carried out around a semi-open seawall. The results implied great changes induced by artificial topography. Not only did artificial topography alter the sediment elemental composition at sites under the effect of artificial topography, but also caused a coupling pattern transition of elements S and Cd. The biogeochemical processes associated with S were also important, as suggested by cluster analysis. The geo-accumulation index shows that artificial topography triggered the accumulation of C, N, S, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cr, Pb, As and Cd, and increased the pollution risk of C, N, S, Cu, As and Cd. Enrichment factors reveal that artificial topography is a new type of human-activity-derived Cu contamination. The heavy metal Cu was notably promoted on both the geo-accumulation index and the enrichment factor under the influence of artificial topography. Further analysis showed that the Cu content in the sediment could be fitted using equations for Al and organic carbon, which represented clay mineral sedimentation and organic matter accumulation, respectively. Copper could be a reliable indicator of environmental degradation caused by artificial topography.

Microbial source tracking (MST) DNA-based assays have been used to successfully solve fecal pollution problems in many countries, particularly in developed nations. However, their application in developing countries has been limited but continues to increase. In this study, sixteen endpoint and quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays targeting universal and human-, swine-, and cattle-specific Bacteroidales gene markers were modified for endpoint PCR, evaluated for their performance with sewage and fecal samples from the Tha Chin watershed and subsequently validated with samples from the Chao Phraya watershed, Thailand. Sample sizes of 81 composite samples (from over 1620 individual samples) of farm animals of each type as well as 19 human sewage samples from the Tha Chin watershed were calculated using a stratified random sampling design to achieve a 90% confidence interval and an expected prevalence (i.e., desired assay's sensitivity) of 0.80. The best universal and human-, swine-, and cattle-specific fecal markers were BacUni EP, HF183/BFDrev EP, Pig-2-Bac EP, and Bac3 assays, respectively. The detection limits for these assays ranged from 30 to 3000 plasmid copies per PCR. The positive predictive values were high in universal and swine- and cattle-specific markers (85–100%), while the positive predictive value of the human-specific assay was 52.2%. The negative predictive values in all assays were relatively high (90.8–100%). A suite of PCR assays in Thailand was established for potential MST use in environmental waters, which supports the worldwide applicability of Bacteroidales gene markers. This study also emphasizes the importance of using a proper sample size in assessing the performance of MST markers in a new geographic region.
