Effects of Cr III and Pb on the bioaccumulation and toxicity of Cd in tropical periphyton communities: Implications of pulsed metal exposures 全文
2012
Bere, Taurai | Chia, Mathias Ahii | Tundisi, J. G.
Metal exposure pattern, timing, frequency, duration, recovery period, metal type and interactions, has obscured effects on periphyton communities in lotic systems. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of intermittent exposures of Cr III and Pb on Cd toxicity and bioaccumulation in tropical periphyton communities. Natural periphyton communities were transferred to artificial stream chambers and exposed to metal mixtures at different pulse timing, duration, frequency and recovery periods. Chlorophyll a, dry mass and metal accumulation kinetics were recorded. Cr and Pb decrease the toxic effects of Cd on periphyton communities. Periphyton has high Cd, Cr and Pb accumulation capacity. Cr and Pb reduced the levels of Cd sequestrated by periphyton communities. The closer the frequency and duration of the pulse is to a continuous exposure, the greater the effects of the contaminant on periphyton growth and metal bioaccumulation. Light increased toxic and accumulative effects of metals on the periphyton community.

One concern about the chelant-enhanced phytoextraction is the potential metal leaching associated with chelant application. A field study was carried out and the metal leaching along the 60-cm depth soil profiles were evaluated within 36 days after the biodegradable chelant EDDS was applied. Results showed EDDS significantly increased soluble Cu in the top 5 cm soil layer 1 day after the application, and the increase of soluble metals was generally limited in the top 20 cm soil. Metal speciation analysis indicated all Cu and Zn were in forms of Cu-EDDS and Zn-EDDS complexes in soil solution, and Ca was the major competitor with trace metals to EDDS. The soluble metals decreased quickly with time, and no significant difference was observed in the extractable Cu between EDDS treatments and the controls 22 days after the EDDS addition. The potential leaching associated with biodegradable EDDS addition may be controlled under field conditions.

2012
Vlčková, Klára | Hofman, Jakub
The close relationship between soil organic matter and the bioavailability of POPs in soils suggests the possibility of using it for the extrapolation between different soils. The aim of this study was to prove that TOC content is not a single factor affecting the bioavailability of POPs and that TOC based extrapolation might be incorrect, especially when comparing natural and artificial soils. Three natural soils with increasing TOC and three artificial soils with TOC comparable to these natural soils were spiked with phenanthrene, pyrene, lindane, p,p′-DDT, and PCB 153 and studied after 0, 14, 28, and 56 days. At each sampling point, total soil concentration and bioaccumulation in earthworms Eisenia fetida were measured. The results showed different behavior and bioavailability of POPs in natural and artificial soils and apparent effects of aging on these differences. Hence, direct TOC based extrapolation between various soils seems to be limited.

Zhang, Dong | Zhu, Lizhong
The sorption and biodegradation of pyrene by Klebsiella oxytoca PYR-1 (PYR-1) in the presence of nonionic surfactant Tween 80 were investigated toward a better understanding that how surfactants can affect biodegradation of hydrophobic organic compounds. The results indicated that Tween 80 can promote the removal, sorption and biodegradation of pyrene depending on the surfactant concentration, of which the most significant promotion of biodegradation was achieved at critical micelle concentration of Tween 80 with an improvement of 22.4%. A highly positive correlation (P<0.0001) was observed between the biodegradation and sorption of pyrene with the presence of Tween 80. Biosorption experiments showed the same trends as biodegradation and further illustrated the improved biodegradation of pyrene was mainly due to surfactant-facilitated sorption. The regularly changes of cell surface hydrophobicity suggested formation of more hydrophobic surface caused by surfactant sorption lead to stimulation of pyrene sorption.

Chronic exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in wildlife might alter the response to environmental changes through interference with the regulation of stress hormones. Here, we examined the relationship between blood concentrations of several POPs and baseline plasma corticosterone levels in the black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) during three distinct periods in the breeding season. The concentrations of POPs and corticosterone increased, whereas body mass decreased progressively from the pre-laying period to the incubation and the chick rearing period. ∑PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls) correlated positively with the baseline corticosterone levels during the pre-laying period, which might suggest that PCBs affect the regulation of corticosterone. However, this relationship was not found during the incubation or the chick rearing period. Possible explanations are discussed with emphasis on how total stress/allostatic load is handled during different periods and conditions.

Payán, M Cruz | Verbinnen, Bram | Galan, Berta | Coz, Alberto | Vandecasteele, Carlo | Viguri, Javier R.
One of the main risks of CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) is CO₂ leakage from a storage site. The influence of CO₂ leakage on trace metals leaching from contaminated marine sediment in a potential storage area (Northern Spain) is addressed using standardized leaching tests. The influence of the pH of the leaching solution on the leachates is evaluated using deionized water, natural seawater and acidified seawater at pH = 5, 6 and 7, obtained by CO₂ bubbling. Equilibrium leaching tests (EN 12457) were performed at different liquid–solid ratios and the results of ANC/BNC leaching test (CEN/TS 15364) were modeled using Visual Minteq. Equilibrium tests gave values of the final pH for all seawater leachates between 7 and 8 due to the high acid neutralization capacity of the sediment. Combining leaching test results and geochemical modeling provided insight in the mechanisms and prediction of trace metals leaching in acidified seawater environment.

2012
Zhang, Junqian | Wang, Zhi | Song, Zhuoyan | Xie, Zhicai | Li, Lin | Song, Lirong
To investigate the bioaccumulation patterns of microcystins (MCs) in organs of two gastropods, samples were collected in Lake Dianchi monthly from May to October, 2008, when cyanobacteria typically bloom. The average MCs concentrations for Radix swinhoei (pulmonate) and Margarya melanioides (prosobranch) tended to be similar for the different organs: the highest values in the hepatopancreas (9.33 by 3.74μg/g DW), followed by digestive tracts (1.66 by 3.03μg/g DW), gonads (0.45 by 1.34μg/g DW) and muscles (0.22 by 0.40μg/g DW). Pulmonate had higher value than prosobranch because of the stronger bioaccumulation ability in hepatopancreas. The levels in organs of R. swinhoei were correlated with environmentally dissolved MCs, but influenced by intracellular MCs for M. melanioides. The estimated MCs concentrations in edible parts of M. melanioides were beyond the WHO’s provisional tolerable daily intake (0.04μg/kg), suggesting the risk of consumption of M. melanioides from the lake.

Annual and weekly mercury (Hg) concentrations, precipitation depths, and Hg wet deposition in the Great Lakes region were analyzed by using data from 5 monitoring networks in the USA and Canada for a 2002–2008 study period. High-resolution maps of calculated annual data, 7-year mean data, and net interannual change for the study period were prepared to assess spatial patterns. Areas with 7-year mean annual Hg concentrations higher than the 12 ng per liter water-quality criterion were mapped in 4 states. Temporal trends in measured weekly data were determined statistically. Monitoring sites with significant 7-year trends in weekly Hg wet deposition were spatially separated and were not sites with trends in weekly Hg concentration. During 2002–2008, Hg wet deposition was found to be unchanged in the Great Lakes region and its subregions. Any small decreases in Hg concentration apparently were offset by increases in precipitation.

2012
Berndt, Michael E. | Bavin, Travis K.
Methylmercury (MeHg), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and sulfate (SO₄ ⁼) relationships were investigated in the mining-influenced St. Louis River watershed in northeast Minnesota. Fewer wetlands and higher SO₄ ⁼ in the mining region lead to generally lower availability and solubility of DOC in mining streams compared to non-mining streams. MeHg concentrations, however, are similarly low in mining and non-mining streams during low flow periods, implying that the extra DOC found in non-mining streams carries little MeHg with it during these periods. High water levels elevated MeHg concentrations in both stream types owing to release from wetlands of DOC species that contain MeHg and remain relatively soluble in streams with elevated ionic strength. In-river methylation appeared to be a negligible component of the MeHg budget for the St. Louis River during this study as MeHg and DOC concentrations were intermediate to those observed in its mining-influenced and wetland-dominated tributaries.

A very high ozone episode with observed hourly values above 350 μg m⁻³ occurred in July 2005 at the Lamas d’Olo air quality monitoring station, located in a mountainous area in the north of Portugal. Aiming to identify the origin and formation of this ozone-rich episode, a statistical analysis and a modelling approach were applied. A cross-spectrum analysis in the frequency domain and a synoptic analysis of the meteorological and air quality time series were performed. In order to go further in this analysis, a numerical modelling approach was applied. The results indicate that the transport of ozone and its precursors is the main responsible for the high ozone concentrations. Together with the local mountain breeze and subsidence conditions, the sea-breeze circulation transporting pollutants from the coastal urban and industrialized areas that reach the site during late afternoon turn out to be the driving forces for the ozone peaks.
