Global review and analysis of erythromycin in the environment: Occurrence, bioaccumulation and antibiotic resistance hazards

Environmental observations of antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals have received attention as indicators of an urbanizing global water cycle. When connections between environment and development of antibiotic resistance (ABR) are considered, it is increasingly important to understand the life cycle of antibiotics. Here we examined the global occurrence of erythromycin (ERY) in: 1. wastewater effluent, inland waters, drinking water, groundwater, and estuarine and coastal systems; 2. sewage sludge, biosolids and sediments; and 3. tissues of aquatic organisms. We then performed probabilistic environmental hazard assessments to identify probabilities of exceeding the predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) of 1.0 μg L−1 for promoting ABR, based on previous modeling of minimum inhibitory concentrations and minimal selective concentrations of ERY, and measured levels from different geographic regions. Marked differences were observed among geographic regions and matrices. For example, more information was available for water matrices (312 publications) than solids (97 publications). ERY has primarily been studied in Asia, North America and Europe with the majority of studies performed in China, USA, Spain and the United Kingdom. In surface waters 72.4% of the Asian studies have been performed in China, while 85.4% of the observations from North America were from the USA; Spain represented 41.9% of the European surface water studies. Remarkably, results from PEHAs indicated that the likelihood of exceeding the ERY PNEC for ABR in effluents was markedly high in Asia (33.3%) followed by Europe (20%) and North America (17.8%). Unfortunately, ERY occurrence data is comparatively limited in coastal and marine systems across large geographic regions including Southwest Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa, and Central and South America. Future studies are needed to understand risks of ERY and other antibiotics to human health and the environment, particularly in developing regions where waste management systems and treatment infrastructure are being implemented slower than access to and consumption of pharmaceuticals is occurring.

Despite the increase of literature on seabird plastic ingestion in recent years, few studies have assessed how plastic loads vary according to different sampling methods. Most studies use necropsies of seabirds with a natural cause of death, e.g. beached or predated, to determine plastic loads and monitor marine debris. Sampling naturally dead seabirds may be biased as they have perished because of their intrinsic factors, e.g. poor body condition, high parasite loads, sickness or predation, affecting estimates of plastic loads. However, seabirds killed accidentally may be more representative of the population. Here, we used the short-tailed shearwater Ardenna tenuirostris to test different sampling methods: naturally beached fledglings and accidentally road-killed fledglings after being attracted and grounded by artificial lights. We compared plastic load, body condition, and feeding strategies (through using feathers’ δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N isotope niche) between beached and road-killed fledglings. Beached birds showed higher plastic loads, poorer body condition and reduced isotopic variability, suggesting that this group is not a representative subsample of the whole cohort of the fledgling population. Our results might have implications for long-term monitoring programs of seabird plastic ingestion. Monitoring plastic debris through beached birds could overestimate plastic ingestion by the entire population. We encourage the establishment of refined monitoring programs using fledglings grounded by light pollution if available. These samples focus on known cohorts from the same population. The fledgling plastic loads are transferred from parents during parental feeding, accumulating during the chick-rearing period. Thus, these fledglings provide a higher and valuable temporal resolution, which is more useful and informative than unknown life history of beached birds.

Atmospheric particulates play a vital role in the transport of potentially toxic metals, being an important exposure pathways of people to toxic elements, which is faster and can occur in a much larger scale than water, soil and biota transport. Windblown materials in abandoned tailing ponds have not been well examined. The objectives of this investigation were: to study the major physical and geochemical properties of the materials eroded by wind inside the tailing ponds, and to understand the relative contribution of different sources to its heavy metals concentration. Study area is located in Cartagena-La Union mining district (SE Spain), where metallic mining of Fe, Pb and Zn has been developed for more than 2500 years. Wind-eroded particulates were monthly collected at 3 different heights (20, 50, and 80 cm) from the ground for a period of a full year using 4 dust collectors. Four tailing samples and 4 surface soil samples from the surrounding hills were also taken. Dust, soil, and tailing samples were examined for pH, particle size distribution, electrical conductivity, calcium carbonate content, Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Mn, Co, Ni, Ti and Zr concentrations. The results indicated that very coarse textured, slightly saline, and almost neutral wind-eroded deposits were generated with a very high temporal variability throughout the year. They also showed that the concentration of Cd, Mn, Pb and Zn, in the dust samples is extraordinarily high (18, 1254, 1831, and 5747 mg kg−1 respectively), whereas Co, Ni, and Cu had concentrations into the range of background concentrations found in the Earth's crust (3.8, 12, and 60 mg kg−1 respectively). Besides, the concentration of both categories of heavy metals in the dust samples was higher than that in tailing and less than that of the soils. The barren surfaces of tailing ponds and also the surface soils of the surrounding area seem to be the major contributors to the dust collected. Therefore, abandoned mines as well as their tailing ponds should be rehabilitated by proper technologies and then well stabilized and/or covered by appropriate plant vegetation to control the transfer, particularly by air, of environmentally hazardous materials to other areas.

Mercury (Hg) emissions from point sources to air may disperse over long distance depending on Hg speciation in the plume. A significant fraction of Hg, particularly in its divalent forms, deposits locally and causes pollution to surrounding biomes. The objective of this study was to investigate (1) the historic Hg deposition to the immediate vicinity of an industrial complex that had intentional use of Hg (i.e., chlor-alkali and polyvinyl chloride production) for 5 decades until 2011, and (2) the Hg⁰ re-emission from soil to air soon after the closure of the facility. The spatial distribution of near-ground Hg⁰ vapor in air, soil Hg concentration and stable isotope ratio, air-soil Hg⁰ flux and Hg⁰ concentration in soil pore-gas were measured. It was found that the surrounding soils are severely contaminated with Hg due to the Hg release of the industrial complex, displaying soil Hg content up to 4.8 μg g⁻¹. A spatial trend of Hg mass dependent isotope fractionation signature (δ²⁰²Hg = −2.11‰ to 0.72‰) with respect to the distance from the closed facility was identified, representing a mixing between regional background and industrial Hg sources. Hg release from the industrial operation enhanced surface soil Hg content within a 6.5-km radius from the facility. Inside the facility, residual Hg wastes (i.e., electrolysis sludge and consumed HgCl₂ catalyst) represent a strong localized emission source of atmospheric Hg⁰. Near-ground atmospheric Hg⁰ concentration and soil Hg⁰ efflux progressively elevated toward the facility with an increase by 2–3 orders of magnitude compared to the values observed in the off-site background. These results suggest that the natural soil surfaces surrounding the closed industrial facility act as a large nonpoint source emitting legacy deposited Hg as much as the release from naturally enriched mines.

The molecular markers sterols and linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) were analyzed in the surficial sediments and suspended particulate matter (SPM) of a subtropical estuary in South Atlantic (Paranaguá Estuarine System). The purpose of this study was identify the spatial distribution of sewage and the input of biogenic organic matter (OM) and to provide comparative insights about their behavior, compositions, and sources. The concentration of coprostanol ranged from < DL (detection limit) to 2.67 μg g−1 in SPM and from < DL to 0.94 μg g−1 in sediments. Total LABs ranged from 43.8 to 480.0 ng g−1 in SPM and from < DL to 21.0 ng g−1 in sediments. LABs homologs composition varied between the two matrices. The local hydrodynamic pattern may promote water column homogenization, dispersion, and dilution of sewage particles, and preferential sedimentation in fluvial and mixture zones. Results suggest that SPM is a good matrix for larger spatial and short time scale evaluation while sediments may help to define hot spot areas of input and final deposition of sewage particles. Marine sterols predominated in SPM while no dominance patterns of marine/terrestrial sterols occurred in surficial sediments. The higher degradation rates of sterols and LABs in the water column must be the main factor for the sharp drop in concentration towards the sediment and the variation of the preferential composition of these markers between compartments.

Contamination of aquatic habitats with pharmaceuticals is a major environmental concern. Recent studies have detected pharmaceutical pollutants in a wide array of ecosystems and organisms, with many of these contaminants being highly resistant to biodegradation and capable of eliciting sub-lethal effects in non-target species. One such pollutant is fluoxetine, a widely prescribed antidepressant, which is frequently detected in surface waters globally and can alter physiology and behaviour in aquatic organisms. Despite this, relatively little is known about the potential for fluoxetine to disrupt mechanisms of sexual selection. Here, we investigate the impacts of 30-day exposure to two environmentally realistic levels of fluoxetine (low and high) on mechanisms of pre- and post-copulatory sexual selection in the eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki). We tested 1) male mating behaviour in the absence or presence of a competitor male, and 2) sperm quality and quantity. We found that high-fluoxetine exposure increased male copulatory behaviour in the absence of a competitor, while no effect was detected under male-male competition. Further, fluoxetine exposure at both concentrations increased total sperm count relative to males from the control group, while no significant change in sperm quality was observed. Lastly, low-fluoxetine males showed a significant reduction in condition index (mass relative to length). Our study is the first to show altered mechanisms of both pre- and post-copulatory sexual selection in an aquatic species resulting from environmentally realistic fluoxetine exposure, highlighting the capacity of pharmaceutical pollution to interfere with sensitive reproductive processes in wildlife.

Crumpled graphene oxide nanosheets have drawn large attentions due to its compressibility and self-avoiding stacking as flat graphene sheets trend to aggregate and restack. Up to now, most of the synthesis approaches were relied on external substrates, such as elastic substrates or ultrasonic atomizer, and the crumpled structures were obtained in a solid state directly. Here we report a facile method to produce crumpled dispersive nanosheets in solution through general base-washing treatment by taking advantage of the amphipathy of GO nanosheets. With the dissociation of oxygen-functional groups on nanosheets in alkaline environment, highly water-soluble oxidative debris (OD) would fall off from the nanosheets due to the increase of electrostatic repulsions, and resulted in the crumple of the flat sheets, while the covalent oxygen-functional groups on the nanosheets were reserved. As a result, the nanosheets remained dispersible in solution, and could be used directly for surface modifications. Pt nanoparticles could be directly deposited onto both sides of the sheets through common nucleation and growth from precursor ions process. Compared with flat graphene-based hybrid, the catalytic performance of crumpled-graphene-Pt (CG-Pt) is more excellent and attractive, and corresponding apparent kinetic rate constant (kₐₚₚ) of CG-Pt toward 4-nitrophenol reduction is enhanced by 2.7–4.6-fold. This study provides a new and facile way to fabricate crumpled nanosheets and demonstrates to be easy modified for various purpose.

Global burden of disease estimates reveal that people in Nigeria are living shorter lifespan than the regional or global average life expectancy. Ambient air pollution is a top risk factor responsible for the reduced longevity. But, the magnitude of the loss or the gains in longevity accruing from the pollution reductions, which are capable of driving mitigation interventions in Nigeria, remain unknown. Thus, we estimate the loss, and the gains in longevity resulting from ambient PM2.5 pollution reductions at the local sub-national level using life table approach. Surface average PM2.5 concentration datasets covering Nigeria with spatial resolution of ∼1 km were obtained from the global gridded concentration fields, and combined with ∼1 km gridded population of the world (GPWv4), and global administrative unit layers (GAUL) for territorial boundaries classification. We estimate the loss or gains in longevity using population-weighted average pollution level and baseline mortality data for cardiopulmonary disease and lung cancer in adults ≥25 years and for respiratory infection in children under 5. As at 2015, there are six “highly polluted”, thirty “polluted” and one “moderately polluted” States in Nigeria. People residing in these States lose ∼3.8–4.0, 3.0–3.6 and 2.7 years of life expectancy, respectively, due to the pollution exposure. But, assuming interventions achieve global air quality guideline of 10 μg/m3, longevity would increase by 2.6–2.9, 1.9–2.5 and 1.6 years for people in the State-categories, respectively. The longevity gains are indeed high, but to achieve them, mitigation interventions should target emission sources having the highest population exposures.

The use of dynamic membranes as a low-cost alternative for conventional membrane for the treatment of landfill leachate (LFL) was investigated in this study. For this purpose a lab-scale, submerged pre-anoxic and post-aerobic bioreactor configuration was used with nylon mesh as dynamic membrane support. The study was conducted at ambient temperature and LFL was fed to the bioreactor in gradually increasing concentration mixed with tap water (from 20% to 100%). The results of this study demonstrated that lower mesh pore size of 52 μm achieved better results in terms of solid-liquid separation performance (turbidity <10 NTU) of the formed dynamic membrane layer as compared to 200 and 85 μm meshes while treating LFL. Consistently high NH₄⁺-N conversion efficiency of more than 98% was achieved under all nitrogen loading conditions, showing effectiveness of the formed dynamic membrane in retaining slow growing nitrifying species. Total nitrogen removal reached more than 90% however, the denitrification activity showed a fluctuating profile and found to be inhibited by elevated concentrations of free nitrous acid and NO₂⁻-N at low pH values inside the anoxic bioreactor. A detailed metagenomic analysis allowed a taxonomic investigation over time and revealed the potential biochemical pathways involved in NH₄⁺-N conversion. This study led to the identification of a dynamic system in which nitrite concentration is determined by the contribution of NH₄⁺ oxidizers (Nitrosomonas), and by a competition between nitrite oxidizers (Nitrospira and Nitrobacter) and reducers (Thauera).

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of biochar aging on the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (the total content – Ctot, and the freely dissolved – Cfree) in biochar and its ecotoxicity. Two biochars (BCS and BCM) with varying properties were aged for 420 days at different temperatures (−20 °C, 4 °C, 20 °C, 70 °C), at a variable temperature (−20/20 °C), in the presence of nutrients, and in the presence of inoculum and nutrients. After the aging process, Ctot and Cfree PAHs were determined in samples obtained and an ecotoxicological analysis was performed, which involved tests with bacteria (Vibrio fischeri), invertebrates (Folsomia candida) and plants (Lepidium sativum). Aging significantly affected all the parameters tested. The range of changes in the studied parameters depended on the type of biochar and ageing conditions. In the case of most of the aging methods, PAH content (Ctot, Cfree) and toxicity were found to decrease. Aging in the presence of microorganisms and nutrients and in the presence of nutrients alone caused the greatest reduction in Ctot PAH content (a reduction from 30 to 100% relative to non-aged biochar), Cfree PAH content (a reduction from 12 to 100%), root growth inhibition (a reduction from 73 to 90%), and luminescence inhibition (a reduction from 24 to 100%). In the case of Cfree PAHs and toxicity to F. candida, some aging methods caused their increase. The study also found a significant relationship between the changes in Ctot PAH content during aging and inhibition of root growth (BCS, BCM) and inhibition of V. fischerii luminescence (BCM). In no case was a significant correlation (P ≥ 0.05) between Cfree PAHs and the investigated toxicity parameters found.
