During the Deepwater Horizon oil spill rapid natural weathering of Macondo crude oil occurred during the transport of oil to coastal areas. In response to the DWH incident, dispersant was applied to Macondo crude oil to reduce the movement of oil to coastal regions. This study aimed to assess the narcotic and phototoxicity of water-accommodated fractions (WAFs) of weathered Macondo crude oil, and chemically-enhanced WAFs of Corexit 9500 to Pacific (Crassostrea gigas) and eastern (Crassostrea virginica) oyster larvae. Phototoxic effects were observed for larval Pacific oysters exposed to combinations of oil and dispersant, but not for oil alone. Phototoxic effects were observed for larval eastern oysters exposed to oil alone and combinations of oil and dispersant. Corexit 9500 did not exhibit phototoxicity but resulted in significant narcotic toxicity for Pacific oysters. Oyster larvae may have experienced reduced survival and/or abnormal development if reproduction coincided with exposures to oil or dispersant.

The Cananéia-Iguape system is located in a coastal region of southeastern Brazil, recognized by UNESCO as an Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve. This system has suffered substantial environmental impacts due to the opening of an artificial channel and by past intensive mining activities. In this paper was performed the sequential chemical extraction of Cu, Pb, and Zn, on previously described sediment cores, and the statistical treatment of the data, allowing to estimate the remobilization geochemical behavior, the available content and the trend of accumulation between 1926 and 2008. The maximum available level (sum of all mobile fraction) were, in mgkg⁻¹, 18.74 for Cu, 177.55 for Pb and 123.03 for Zn. Considering its environmental availability, Pb remains a concern in the system. It was possible to recognize the anthropic contribution of Pb, being the mining activities considered the only potential source of this metal in the region.

This study focuses on creating a baseline for ⁴⁰K, ²¹⁰Pb, ¹³⁷Cs, ⁹⁰Sr, ²²⁶Ra, ²²⁸Ra, ²³⁸U, ²³⁵U, ²³⁴U, ²³⁹⁺²⁴⁰Pu and ²³⁸Pu in marine sediments in the northwestern Gulf. The respective measured concentration ranges were 386–489, 32.3–48.8, 1.5–2.9, 4.53–5.42, 18.3–23.1, 18.8–23.0, 22.3–30.5, 0.99–1.33, 25.6–34.8, 0.30–0.93, and 0.0008–0.00018Bqkg⁻¹. The levels of these radionuclides are generally comparable to values reported for other marine waters in the northern hemisphere. The ¹³⁷Cs activity in the Gulf sediments offshore Kuwait is an order of magnitude lower compared to sediments from northeastern Iran. Other than that finding, no hot spots were observed in sediments adjacent to power and desalination plants, oil and gas industrial activities or wastewater treatment facilities. These data will serve as a baseline to gauge possible future inputs of radionuclides in the northern Gulf. The calculated average ratio of ²³⁵U/²³⁸U activity in the area is in agreement with the reported figure of the natural uranium ratio, suggesting the absence of depleted uranium (DU) at all the stations. The low concentration of ²³⁹⁺²⁴⁰Pu suggests that there is no significant source of plutonium except that from atmospheric fallout from weapon testing and possible dry deposition via long-range dust transport.

Total contents and chemical speciation of Co, Ni, Cu, Ga, Mo, Cd, In, Sn, Sb, V, W, Tl, Bi and U in size-fractionated (<32, 32–63 and >63μm) core sediments from Jiaozhou Bay were investigated to reveal their responses to anthropogenic activities. Metal contents showed a decreasing trend with increasing grain sizes. However, the loadings of metal fraction on <32, 32–63 and >63μm grain sizes were 16%, 47% and 37%, respectively. Anthropogenic fluxes and enrichment factors of metals in >63μm fraction were closely linked to anthropogenic activities, with an obvious increase in upper 27cm (1998–2015) and a slight decrease in 2009year. Metals (especially for Cd, Co, Cu and Ni) in >63μm fraction were more easily released, with the highest percentage of acid soluble form and lowest residual form. Thus, the size fraction of >63μm cannot be ignored.

The ingestion of detritus by sea turtles results in high mortality and morbidity. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of free-living sea turtles that ingested anthropogenic inorganic detritus in comparison to those that did not. A total of 186 necropsy files were analyzed in marine turtles from the beaches of the Microregion dos Lagos, Rio de Janeiro. Among the turtles that ingested detritus, the mean turtle was female and cachectic, with a carapace length of 36,6 cm, detritus accumulated in the large intestine, and fecal compaction. It seems most likely that's low food transit, combined with the multiplicity of ingestion, favored the accumulation of detritus. This ingestion resulted in cachexia associated with fecal compaction, since the greatest accumulation was in the large intestine. The intake of detritus by turtles was not punctual but continuous. These studies demonstrated the vulnerability of these animals to environmental pollution.

The aim of the present study is to assess the baseline level of the trace element, sediment pollution and potential ecological risk of reef associated sediments of Musal, Manoli and Manoli putti Islands, Gulf of Mannar, India. The grain size distribution of the sediments is chiefly controlled by corals and broken shell debris. The distribution of lithoclastic fractions and element concentration are most probably derived from longshore sediment transport and fluvial process from nearby mainland. The enrichment of organic matter is chiefly controlled by mangrove litters and sea grasses. The concentration of lead in the marine sediments is subjected to sediment matrix, vicinity of the local pollutant sources and distance from the mainland coast. The ecological risk assessment clearly reveals that the sediments belong to the low risk category.

Coastal wetlands are increasingly being converted into canal estates with potential consequences for ecosystem functioning. We compared the sources and fate of organic matter and water quality at four types of canal habitats (entrances and ends of canals, canal lakes and lake edges) and shallow and deep natural habitats (four replicates of each habitat). The fate of labile organic matter was assessed by measuring rates of scavenging of carrion. Surface sediments were analysed for organic carbon content and stable carbon isotopes, fatty acid biomarkers and compound specific stable isotope analysis of selected fatty acids were used to elucidate sources of sedimentary organic matter. Canal lakes differed from other habitats and were characterised by negligible scavenging, larger quantities of organic matter comprised of higher contributions from diatoms, and hypoxia. Despite some trends, natural habitats were statistically indistinguishable from canal entrances and ends. Variation among replicate habitats was large.

The Jiulong River watershed (JRW) in southeast China includes livestock breeding and agriculture, leading to large amounts of non-point source pollution. Nitrogen (N) reductions were simulated and mapped using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) under scenarios that were built considered both constructed wetlands (CWs) and climate change, which are not common in the literature on ecosystem services assessments. The results showed that the amount of N exported from non-point sources within the JRW was 12,569 t·yr⁻¹. The areal N load was relatively higher in the north, while more N exported in the southeast. Constructed riparian wetlands can intercept and reduce the N loads that enter water bodies, but climate change may be a factor driving the deterioration of water quality. The methodology can be generalized to reduce other contaminants, and provides a tool for decision-makers to weigh the costs and benefits of urbanization and conservation.

Surface water samples from the environmental continuum spanning rivers (Petrohue, Cochamo, Puelo), fjord (Reloncaví), and the inner sea of Chiloé in Chilean Patagonia were analyzed to estimate concentration and distribution of dissolved Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). High concentrations of HCHs, DDTs and endosulfan found in surface waters from rivers suggest that rivers are the major source of dissolved OCPs to coastal marine ecosystems. We interpret variations in the distribution and concentration as an apparent oscillation between rain and snow-scavenging processes that might determine the type of OCPs that can be preferentially deposited on mountains, glaciers, rivers, estuaries, and finally transferred to the marine realm. Predominance of α-HCH, γ-HCH, p,p′-DDE and α-endosulfan compounds suggest that the main deposition mechanism of OCPs to the Chilean Patagonia is rain scavenging. Snow and rain can be additional sources of OCPs that must be considered for future studies in fjord systems in Chilean Patagonia.

2018
Tebbett, Sterling B. | Goatley, Christopher H.R. | Bellwood, David R.
Sediments trapped within algal turfs play a key role in mediating ecosystem processes on reefs. Despite this ecological importance, our understanding of turf-bound sediments on coastal reefs is limited, even though such reefs are heavily exposed to terrestrial sediments. We compared algal turf sediment loads, composition and grain size distributions among coastal reefs along the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and compared these to turf-bound sediments on reefs across the GBR. Algal turf sediment loads on coastal reefs were on average 9.4 times higher than offshore reefs (range 2.2–16.1 times). Among coastal reefs there was marked variability in the loads (797.87–3681.78 g m−2), composition (organics 1.0–8.9%; silicates 27.4–93.0%) and grain size of sediments. Our data highlight the potential variability in physical and ecological factors that control sediment dynamics on coastal reefs, including proximity to rivers, and reveal that turfs on coastal reefs are heavily influenced by sediments.
