Long-term exposure to PM₂.₅ has been linked to lung cancer incidence and mortality, but limited evidence existed for other cancers. This study aimed to assess the association between PM₂.₅ on cancer specific mortality. An ecological study based on the cancer mortality data collected from 5,565 Brazilian cities during 2010–2018 using a difference-in-differences approach with quasi-Poisson regression, was applied to examine PM₂.₅-cancer mortality associations. Globally gridded annual average surface PM₂.₅ concentration was extracted and linked with the residential municipality of participants in this study. Sex, age stratified and exposure-response estimations were also conducted. Totalling 1,768,668 adult cancer deaths records of about 208 million population living across 5,565 municipalities were included in this study. The average PM₂.₅ concentration was 7.63 μg/m³ (standard deviation 3.32) with range from 2.95 μg/m³ to 28.5 μg/m³. With each 10 μg/m³ increase in three-year-average (current year and previous two years) concentrations of PM₂.₅, the relative risks (RR) of cancer mortality were 1.16 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.11–1.20) for all-site cancers. The PM₂.₅ exposure was significantly associated with several cancer-specific mortalities including oral, nasopharynx, oesophagus, and stomach, colon rectum, liver, gallbladder, larynx, lung, bone, skin, female breast, cervix, prostate, brain and leukaemia. No safe level of PM₂.₅ exposure was observed in the exposure-response curve for all types of cancer. In conclusion, with nationwide cancer death records in Brazil, we found that long-term exposure to ambient PM₂.₅ increased risks of mortality for many cancer types. Even low level PM₂.₅ concentrations had significant impacts on cancer mortality.

Antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and virulence factor genes (VFGs) constitute a serious threat to public health, and climate change has been predicted to affect the increase in bacterial pathogens harboring ARGs and VFGs. However, studies on bacterial pathogens and their ARGs and VFGs in permafrost region have received limited attention. In this study, a metagenomic approach was applied to a comprehensive survey to detect potential ARGs, VFGs, and pathogenic antibiotic resistant bacteria (PARB) carrying both ARGs and VFGs in the active layer and permafrost. Overall, 70 unique ARGs against 18 antimicrobial drug classes and 599 VFGs classified as 38 virulence factors were detected in the Arctic permafrost region. Eight genes with mobile genetic elements (MGEs) carrying ARGs were identified; most MGEs were classified as phages. In the metagenome-assembled genomes, the presence of 15 PARB was confirmed. The soil profile showed that the transcripts per million (TPM) values of ARGs and VFGs in the sub-soil horizon were significantly lower than those in the top soil horizon. Based on the TPM value of each gene, major ARGs, VFGs, and these genes in PARB from the Arctic permafrost region were identified and their distribution was confirmed. The major host bacteria for ARGs and VFGs and PARB were identified. A comparison of the percentage identity distribution of ARGs and VFGs to reference databases indicated that ARGs and VFGs in the Arctic soils differ from previously identified genes. Our results may help understand the characteristics and distribution of ARGs, VFGs, and these genes in PARB in the Arctic permafrost region. This findings suggest that the Arctic permafrost region may serve as potential reservoirs for ARGs, VFGs, and PARB. These genes could pose a new threat to human health if they are released by permafrost thawing owing to global warming and propagate to other regions.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) represent a considerable threat to humans and ecosystems. Strategic remediation techniques for the abatement of VOCs are immensely important and immediately needed. Given a unique set of optical, mechanical, electrical, and thermal characteristics, inimitable surface functionalities, porous structure, and substantial specific surface area, graphene and derived nanohybrid composites have emerged as exciting candidates for abating environmental pollutants through photocatalytic degradation and adsorptive removal. Graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) containing oxygenated function entities, i.e., carbonyl, hydroxyl, and carboxylic groups, provide anchor and dispersibility of their surface photocatalytic nanoscale particles and adsorptive sites for VOCs. Therefore, it is meaningful to recapitulate current state-of-the-art research advancements in graphene-derived nanostructures as prospective platforms for VOCs degradation. Considering this necessity, this work provides a comprehensive and valuable insight into research progress on applying graphene-based nanohybrid composites for adsorptive and photocatalytic abatement of VOCs in the aqueous media. First, we present a portrayal of graphene-based nanohybrid based on their structural attributes (i.e., pore size, specific surface area, and other surface features to adsorb VOCs) and structure-assisted performance for VOCs abatement by graphene-based nanocomposites. The adsorptive and photocatalytic potentialities of graphene-based nanohybrids for VOCs are discussed with suitable examples. In addition to regeneration, reusability, and environmental toxicity aspects, the challenges and possible future directions of graphene-based nanostructures are also outlined towards the end of the review to promote large-scale applications of this fascinating technology.

Whalers Bay, in Deception Island, has one of the most anthropogenically impacted areas in Maritime Antarctica. However, considering the volcanic nature (high concentrations of heavy metals) of Deception Island's soils, this putative anthropogenic impact should be carefully investigated. In this context, the objective of this study was to compare resistome profiles of impacted and non-impacted areas in Deception Island (Whalers Bay, Crater Lake, and Fumarole Bay) and Livingston Island (Hannah Point) in order to investigate the microbiome tolerance/resistance mechanisms selected as a function of environmental drivers. Metagenomics was used to search for genes conferring resistance/tolerance to antibiotics, biocides, and heavy metals. Whalers Bay has a greater diversity of antibiotic, biocide, and heavy metal resistance classes found in its microbiomes. However, Hannah Point, at Livingston Island, has a greater abundance of antibiotic and biocide resistance/tolerance genes. The microbiome of Deception Island's non-impacted areas (Crater Lake and Fumarole Bay) showed resistance/tolerance genes almost entirely to heavy metals. Pb was found in higher concentrations in Whalers Bay soil in comparison to the other areas, indicating human contamination. The non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis revealed that Pb concentrations influenced resistome profiles in Whalers Bay soil. Despite the effect of Pb on the microbial communities of Whalers Bay, most heavy metal concentrations did not have a significant impact on resistome genes, suggesting that the volcanic soil heavy metal concentration of Deception Island has little biological influence.

Arctic tundra soils store a globally significant amount of mercury (Hg), which could be transformed to the neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) upon warming and thus poses serious threats to the Arctic ecosystem. However, our knowledge of the biogeochemical drivers of MeHg production is limited in these soils. Using substrate addition (acetate and sulfate) and selective microbial inhibition approaches, we investigated the geochemical drivers and dominant microbial methylators in 60-day microcosm incubations with two tundra soils: a circumneutral fen soil and an acidic bog soil, collected near Nome, Alaska, United States. Results showed that increasing acetate concentration had negligible influences on MeHg production in both soils. However, inhibition of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) completely stalled MeHg production in the fen soil in the first 15 days, whereas addition of sulfate in the low-sulfate bog soil increased MeHg production by 5-fold, suggesting prominent roles of SRB in Hg(II) methylation. Without the addition of sulfate in the bog soil or when sulfate was depleted in the fen soil (after 15 days), both SRB and methanogens contributed to MeHg production. Analysis of microbial community composition confirmed the presence of several phyla known to harbor microorganisms associated with Hg(II) methylation in the soils. The observations suggest that SRB and methanogens were mainly responsible for Hg(II) methylation in these tundra soils, although their relative contributions depended on the availability of sulfate and possibly syntrophic metabolisms between SRB and methanogens.

Microplastic pollution is currently one of the most intensely studied ecological issues. Numerous studies have estimated the distribution and concentration of microplastics in various environments and determine how they affect their inhabitants. Much less effort has been place on assessing the possible effects of microplastics on interactions between organisms, including interspecific competition. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that the presence of microplastics affects the proportion of individuals of coexisting species and the elimination rate of the inferior competitor. The hypothesis was tested in competitive experiments done in the absence and presence of spherical non-biodegradable polystyrene and polyethylene and biodegradable polyhydroxybutyrate in environmentally relevant densities. In each of the experiments, we used three different pairs of closely related planktonic species of the genus Daphnia composed of the superior and inferior competitor: D. pulex and D. magna, D. magna and D. galeata, D. pulex and D. galeata. The results support our hypothesis and demonstrate each microplastic type had a different effect on the density of the competing species. The presence of polystyrene and polyethylene lowered the density of the superior competitor in each of the three pairs, at least partially due to a reduction in the number of gravid females, but not their fecundity. The presence of the polyhydroxybutyrate, in turn, increased the population density of D. magna in the variants with each of the two remaining species. Moreover, the presence of microplastics affected the elimination rate of the inferior competitor, i.e. polystyrene expedited the exclusion of D. magna by D. pulex, and polyhydroxybutyrate hampered the exclusion of D. magna by D. pulex. Our results suggest that long-term exposure to environmentally relevant densities of both non-biodegradable and biodegradable microplastics may affect the relative abundance of co-occurring species in zooplankton communities, and thus the functioning of aquatic ecosystems.

We measured the concentrations of cesium isotopes (¹³³Cs, ¹³⁴Cs, and ¹³⁷Cs) in zooplankton samples collected in waters off the east coast of Japan from May 2015 to June 2020. By combining these data with those obtained previously from May 2012 to February 2015, we evaluated the long-term impacts of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident on marine zooplankton. Relatively high ¹³⁷Cs concentrations in zooplankton, exceeding 10 Bq/kg-dry weight, were sporadically observed until June 2016, regardless of year or station. After May–June 2017, ¹³⁷Cs concentrations decreased to below 1 Bq/kg-dry at most stations, and by May 2020, concentrations were below 0.5 Bq/kg-dry except those off Fukushima Prefecture. Since the accident, the ¹³⁷Cs/¹³³Cs atom ratios of zooplankton samples were higher than those of ambient seawater until 2019, but in May–June 2020 the ratios matched those of seawater except off Fukushima Prefecture. Highly radioactive particles were not detected in zooplankton samples by autoradiography using imaging plates after May–June 2017, although they were before. Therefore, the persistence of elevated ¹³⁷Cs/¹³³Cs ratios in zooplankton relative to seawater for nine years after the accident was probably due to the incorporation of highly radioactive particles (cesium-bearing particles or clay-mineral aggregates with highly adsorbed radiocesium) onto/into zooplankton for several years after the accident. However, since at least May–June 2017, these elevated ratios have likely been caused by small highly radioactive particles (or larger particles disaggregated into small pieces) entering the ocean from land via rivers or directly discharged from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. Microplastics enriched with radiocesium with higher ¹³⁷Cs/¹³³Cs ratios than seawater may have also contributed ¹³⁷Cs to the zooplankton.

Heavy metal or metalloid contamination is a common problem in soils of urban environments. Their introduction can be due to unpremeditated anthropogenic activities like atmospheric deposition produced by diffuse sources, construction activities and landscape maintenance. Phytoremediation is a rapidly evolving, sustainable approach to remediate the contaminated lands where metals and metalloids are highly persistent in the environment. The present work sets out to determine the level of 12 heavy metals and metalloids (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb and Zn) in soil and their accumulation by plant foliage found in nature parks and industrial sites in Singapore. The latter also involve the investigation of the remediation capacity of selected tropical plant species found at the sampling sites. The study is done using digestion and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. Eleven soil sampling sites across Singapore with 300 sampling points were selected, where soil (0–10 cm) and plant foliage samples were collected. Bioconcentration factors were determined to assess the phytoremediation potential of the collected plant species. Toxicity risk of heavy metals were assessed by comparing the target and intervention values from the soil quality guidelines by the Dutch Standard. Results of the study revealed there were regions where levels of heavy metals and metalloids were relatively high and could affect the environment and the health of flora and fauna in Singapore. Our study discovered that there were available tropical plant species (e.g., wildflowers, ferns and shrubs) which could potentially play a significant role in the remediation of contaminated lands that could open up a huge possibility of developing a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way of managing this emerging urban problem. Results showed that 12 plant species, including hyperaccumulator like Pteris vittata, Centella asiatica, were effective for the accumulation of heavy metals and metalloids.

The association of co-exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phthalates (PAEs) with blood cell-based inflammatory biomarkers is largely unknown. We conducted a panel study of 144 children aged 4–12 years, with up to 3 repeated visits across 3 seasons. For each visit, we collected the first-morning urine for 4 consecutive days and fasting blood on the day of physical examination. We developed a gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry method to detect the metabolites of 10 PAHs (OH-PAHs) and 10 PAEs (mPAEs) in urine samples. We employed linear mixed-effects models to evaluate the individual associations of each OH-PAH and mPAE with blood cell-based inflammatory biomarkers over different lag times. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) and quantile g-computation were used to evaluate the overall associations of OH-PAHs and mPAEs mixtures with blood cell-based inflammatory biomarkers. After multiple adjustments, we found positive associations of summed hydroxylphenanthrene (∑OHPHE), summed OH-PAHs, and mono-n-butyl phthalate with inflammatory biomarkers such as neutrophil count, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) at lag 0 (the day of physical examination). Each 1% increase in ∑OHPHE was related to a 0.18% (95% confidence interval: 0.10%, 0.25%) increase in SII, which was the strongest among the above associations. The results of BKMR and quantile g-computation suggested that co-exposure to PAHs and PAEs mixture was associated with an elevated white blood cell count, neutrophil count, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and SII, to which ∑OHPHE and 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHPYR) might be the major contributors. In addition, gender and age modified the associations of ∑OHPHE and 1-OHPYR with inflammatory biomarkers, where girls and younger children were more susceptible. In conclusion, co-exposure to PAHs and PAEs was associated with elevated inflammation in children, in which ∑OHPHE and 1-OHPYR might play important roles.

Urbanization has destroyed river ecosystems, leading to eutrophication. Heavy metals are frequently observed in urban rivers, and the joint effects of eutrophication and heavy metals on microbial communities, especially on fungal communities, have not been adequately explored. In this study, we explored the effect of sediment physicochemical factors and heavy metals on the microbial diversity, community structure, and functions of bacterial and fungal communities from a black-odorous river in Wuhu, China. Twenty-four samples were collected, and the diversity and structure of fungal and bacterial communities were determined by high-throughput sequencing. Proteobacteria and Rozellomycota were the main phyla in the bacterial and fungal communities, respectively. The results showed different distribution patterns of bacterial and fungal communities along the river. Physicochemical factors and heavy metals exhibited different effects on microbial variation. Specifically, pH and Cr negatively affected bacterial α-diversity, whereas total phosphorus and Cr significantly affected fungal α-diversity. Variance partitioning analysis revealed that physicochemical factors explained more of the bacterial community structure than heavy metals (49.5% vs. 36.6%), with pH and total phosphorus being the dominant factors. Opposite patterns were observed for fungal community structure, with heavy metals contributing the most (48.0%). A similar influence pattern was observed for the predicted functions of the two communities. This study suggests that heavy metals in eutrophication rivers are essential factors that shift the microbial variation and should be considered in urban river evaluation and remediation.
