Adsorption of Se (IV) and Se (VI) Using Copper-Impregnated Activated Carbon and Fly Ash-Extracted Char Carbon 全文

Surface and groundwater are often contaminated with toxic anions such as arsenic and selenium. Because of their large surface areas, selenium adsorption on carbon sorbents is considered an attractive water treatment technique. In this present work, selenium sorption on copper-impregnated activated carbon and fly ash-extracted char carbon was evaluated. Unburned carbon was extracted from fly ash using froth floatation techniques, and the carbon sorbents were modified using copper ions. Adsorption experiments confirmed the strong influence of electrostatic forces on equilibrium uptakes of selenite (Se (IV)) and selenate (Se (VI)). Selenium sorption on virgin char carbon was maximum only at acidic pH, i.e., at pH < pHₚzc (pH at point of zero charge). Upon copper modification of the carbon surface, the pHₚzc shifted towards the alkaline region, and as a result, the positive charge density on the carbon surface increased. At pH > pHₚzc, a two- to fourfold increase in sorption coverage and threefold increase in selenium percent removal was observed. Se (IV) sorption was higher compared to Se (VI) sorption. The effect of selenium concentrations and competing anions was studied to evaluate adsorbent performance. The order of maximum surface coverage followed the order: modified char carbon > modified activated carbon > char carbon. The main mechanism of selenium (Se) sorption appeared to be (1) electrostatic attraction of the Se ions to the modified carbon surface at acidic to neutral pH; (2) complexation of Se ions with the copper ions/oxides on the carbon surface; and (3) co-precipitation with copper hydroxides at alkaline pH.

Zero-valent iron has received considerable attention for its potential application in the removal of heavy metals from water. This paper considers the possibility of removal of zinc ions from water by causing precipitates to form on the surface of iron. The chemical states and the atomic concentrations of solids which have formed on the surface of zero-valent iron as well as the type of the deposited polycrystalline substances have been analyzed with the use of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The BET surface area, the pH at point of zero charge (pHPZC), the ORP of the solutions, and the pH and chemical concentrations in the solutions have also been measured. Furthermore, the paper also considers the possibility of release of zinc from the precipitates to demineralised water in changing physicochemical and chemical conditions. In a wide range of pH values, Zn ₓ Fe₃ ₋ ₓ O₄ (where x ≤ 1) was the main compound resulting from the removal of zinc in ionic form from water. In neutral and alkaline conditions, the adsorption occurred as an additional process.

Investigations were undertaken to study sorption of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution onto coal bottom ash. X-ray diffraction analysis of coal bottom ash indicated presence of feldspar (KAlSi₃O₈–NaAlSi₃O₈–CaAl₂Si₂O₈), mullite (Al₆Si₂O₁₃), and magnetite (Fe²⁺Fe³⁺₂O₄). Toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) revealed that heavy metal ions such as Fe(II), Fe(III), Mn(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), As(III), As(V), Pb(II), and Cd(II) could be leached out from coal bottom ash. Continuous column test with the bottom ash showed negligible heavy metal ion leach-out at pH 6.0, although at pH 4.2 some heavy metal ion leaching, mainly of Mn(II), was observed. Batch sorption studies with individual heavy metal ions (Fe(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Mn(II)) revealed that the heavy metal ion sorption onto coal bottom ash could be described by pseudo-second-order kinetics. Sorption isotherm studies revealed that Langmuir isotherm could adequately describe the heavy metal ion sorption onto coal bottom ash with maximum adsorption capacity (qₘ) ranging from 1.00 to 25.00 mg/g for various heavy metal ions. Removal of heavy metal ions by coal bottom ash is attributed to both adsorption and hydroxide precipitation of heavy metals due to the presence of different oxides (i.e., SiO₂, Al₂O₃, Fe₂O₃, CaO) in coal bottom ash.

The bioactivity of three kinds of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) towards the conidia of entomopathogenic fungus Isaria fumosorosea was examined in an in vitro study. Commercial—raw and functionalized—carboxylated MWCNT were applied. A fungal conidia suspension was placed in contact with dispersed MWCNT over different time-periods. After contact with the nanomaterial, the conidia were cultured on dishes and both the linear vegetative mycelium growth and the sporulation and germination of the spores derived from the culture were investigated. Also, the pathogenicity of the conidia after contact with MWCNT was examined in relation to test larvae. No fungistatic activity of MWCNT relative to I. fumosorosea conidia was demonstrated. Conidia contact with MWCNT resulted in the following changes in vital processes in the subsequent culture compared to the control standard culture: (1) raw MWCNT limited mycelium inoculation, but the growth rate observed later in the log-phase was more intense; (2) after 24-h conidia contact with all MWCNT types, the mycelium sporulated the most intensively; longer contact resulted in sporulation process limitation. Germination of conidia after contact with the MWCNT was not significantly modified. Raw MWCNT potentiated conidia pathogenicity towards test insects. It was observed that carboxylation of MWCNT reduces the bioactivity of this nanomaterial towards the investigated conidia.

Palladium (Pd) is an emerging eco-toxic pollutant from vehicle catalytic converters, emitted worldwide for more than two decades. Nowadays, the spatial extent of Pd fallout is growing along roads, but its subsequent fate in neighboring terrestrial ecosystems has not been extensively addressed yet. Two sites representative of contrasted natural environments (field, forest) but located under similar ambient conditions were selected to isolate and analyze the specific impact of vehicular Pd, along highway A71, France. Pd impregnation was assessed along 200-m-long transects perpendicular to the highway. Contents were measured in soils, earthworms, plant communities of the right of way (ROW), and the neighboring field (crop weeds), as well as in a moss, and bramble and ivy leaves in the forest. The direct impact of Pd fallouts appears to be confined in the grassy verge of the highway: ROW soils ([Pd] = 52–65 ng g⁻¹), earthworms ([Pd] = 18–38 ng g⁻¹), and plant community ([Pd] = 10–23 ng g⁻¹). Pd footprint is pointed out by the accumulation index calculated for earthworms and plant communities even though transfer coefficients indicate the absence of bioaccumulation (TCs < 1). An indirect longer range transfer of Pd is identified, induced by hydric transport of organic matter.

Paris conurbation is a heavily urbanized but weakly industrialized catchment. Recently, it has been shown at the scale of Paris that alkylphenols (AP) and phthalates (PAE) are not rejected by the industry, but they originate from domestic wastewater at more than 95 %. However, the contribution of the different types of greywater to the pollution by alkylphenols and phthalates was not addressed. This work aims at providing new insights on this particular point. Hence, the concentration of four phthalates (diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), and di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP)) and two alkylphenols (octylphenols (OP) and isomers of nonylphenol (NP)) were followed in greywater. For each sample, analyses were carried out on both the dissolved and particulate phases. Moreover, water quality parameters were also monitored, in order to find out whether or not any correlation exists between the concentration of the investigated contaminants and the quality of water. Water quality parameters studied are pH, total suspended solids (TSS), dissolved and particular organic carbon (DOC and POC), chemical and biochemical oxygen demands (COD and BOD5), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), and anionic detergents (methylene blue active substance or MBAS). This paper presents the methodology used to monitor two greywater with the most important volumes: showers and washing machines. These greywater showed high variability with regard to water quality parameters. Moreover, AP and PAE concentrations are given for the first time for these two types of greywater. All compounds except OP were observed in almost all samples in at least one of the two monitored phases. The concentrations varied between limit of quantification for OP and 102 μg/l for DEHP. The levels measured in washing machines were higher than those for showers for all compounds. For instance, median NP concentration in washing machines was 3.59 μg/l against 1.09 μg/l in showers, DEHP was observed at 102 μg/l in washing machines against 16.6 μg/l in showers. Variability of the results was explained by habits of individuals (shower time, number of products used…) but also by differences in product composition. However, each type of water exhibited the same distribution. NP was the most abundant AP (about 85 % of the total amount) while DEHP represented the two thirds of the PAE compounds. The partition coefficients (Kd in l/kg) were evaluated. The results showed that log Kd ranged between 2.1 (DEP) and 4.8 (DEHP). Log Koc presented similar trends lying in the 2.4 (DEP)-5.0 (DEHP) range. Finally, with regard to greywater quality, the application for greywater reuse is discussed.

Drainage water from acid sulfate soils with sulfuric material has high concentrations of protons and dissolved metals which can have detrimental effects on the surrounding ecosystems. Liming is expensive; therefore, alternative methods are needed. Organic materials such as plant residues, compost or biochars can bind protons and metals but have not been evaluated with respect to remediation of acid drainage water from acid sulfate soils. In this study, eight organic materials (compost, two straws and five biochars differing in feed stock and production temperature) were placed in small PVC cores at 1.5 g C/core and synthetic acid drainage water (pH 3, 28 mg Fe/l and 2 mg Al/l, properties based on long-term averages of drainage water from sulfuric acid sulfate soils) was applied in four leaching events. Mallee biochar produced at 550 °C and wheat biochar produced at 450 °C had high retention capacity for protons, Fe and Al. Retention was low in compost and wheat straw. Retention of protons was positively correlated with organic C concentration of the materials. Retention of Fe and Al was correlated with percentage alkyl, aryl and ketone groups. Other properties such as release of native Fe and Al and amount of material per core could explain differences in ability of organic materials to retain protons, Fe and Al. We conclude that some organic materials such as mallee biochar produced at 550 °C and wheat biochar produced at 450 °C could be used to remediate acidic drainage water.

Conversion of native forest to pastures is a common practice worldwide; it has complex effects on river biota that are related to activity type and intensity. This work was conducted in order to evaluate the effects of cattle grazing on environmental features and to select the most appropriate measures based on the macroinvertebrate community as indicators of ecological changes. Physicochemical features, riparian ecosystem quality, habitat condition, and benthic macroinvertebrates were investigated in streams draining pastures and were compared to reference streams located in nonimpacted native forested catchments. Strong evidence of sediment deposition was observed at pasture streams, which had higher percentage of sand in the streambed but also increased levels of suspended solids. Pasture sites had significantly higher water temperature and conductivity as well as lower dissolved oxygen concentrations than did forested sites. Both riparian quality and in-stream habitat condition were degraded at pasture sites. Among metrics, total richness, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) richness, Plecoptera richness, Shannon diversity, percentage of dominant taxon, percentage of Chironomidae species, shredder richness, and percentage of predator resulted to be the most consistent measures by displaying stronger responses to impairment. Our results suggest that forest conversion to pasture for livestock practices is diminishing macroinvertebrate biodiversity and potentially changing functioning and dynamics of Patagonian mountain streams as well. Damage prevention on riverine landscapes by restoring riparian ecosystems, replanting missing vegetation in buffer areas, and limiting livestock access to the riverbanks could contribute to enhance the ecological integrity at converted areas. A more extended and comprehensive use of macroinvertebrate metrics could contribute to better understand and evaluate impact effects of these extended land use activities and to promote conservation strategies.

Among metrics, totalrichness, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera(EPT) richness, Plecoptera richness, Shannon diversity,percentage of dominant taxon, percentage ofChironomidae species, shredder richness, and percentageof predator resulted to be the most consistent measures bydisplaying stronger responses to impairment. Our resultssuggest that forest conversion to pasture for livestockpractices is diminishing macroinvertebrate biodiversityand potentially changing functioning and dynamics ofPatagonian mountain streams as well. Damage preventionon riverine landscapes by restoring riparian ecosystems,replanting missing vegetation in buffer areas, andlimiting livestock access to the riverbanks could contributeto enhance the ecological integrity at converted areas.A more extended and comprehensive use of macroinvertebratemetrics could contribute to better understand andevaluate impact effects of these extended land use activitiesand to promote conservation strategies. | Fil: Brand, Cecilia. As freshwater bodies become enriched in nutrients, there is a shift in the phytoplankton community toward dominance by cyanobacteria. Cyanobacterial blooms are a significant problem in water supply reservoirs worldwide because some species can release toxic compounds and are also associated with the production of bad odor and taste. The aims of this paper were to elucidate the mechanism inducing the development of cyanobacterial blooms and to understand the species succession during the bloom, as well as the influence of abiotic factors on the species composition. Total phosphorus level and parameters related to seasonality, i.e., temperature and solar radiation, were the factors triggering the development of the blooms. Blooms were dominated by Microcystis natans and Anabaena circinalis. Phosphorus was an important limiting factor for Anabaena development but never limited Microcystis growth. Water temperature was optimum until end of February for Anabaena, whereas Microcystis growth was slightly limited since water temperature never reached the optimal. Solar radiation was more limiting than temperature, and the decrease in light had a strong role in the bloom decline. Four species of cyanobacteria recorded in Paso de las Piedras reservoir are potentially toxic: Snowella fennica, Microcystis aeruginosa, Planktothrix agardhii, and A. circinalis, being the last one as the most abundant species during the blooms. Considering the Alert Level Framework for cyanobacteria, alert level 2 was exceeded only during blooms while alert level 1 was exceeded during almost all the year.

Background. In Cambodia, there is widespread use of skin-whitening creams containing levels of mercury that exceed Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) guidelines by up to 35,000 times. Mercury in skin-whitening creams threatens to compromise the health of Cambodians. Objectives. It is important to provide essential information on sources of mercury so that Cambodians can avoid exposure to elevated levels of mercury and to support informed management of consumer goods. Methods. Students were directed to buy selected skin-whitening creams that were then sampled with replication in 2011 and 2015 and processed with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) at the University of Health Science (UHS), Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Discussion. The analysis of skin-whitening creams in Phnom Penh in 2015 was compared to analyses in 2008 and 2011 and showed that several creams produced in Asia no longer contain mercury. However, skin creams produced in Phnom Penh continue to use mercury and counterfeit products also are contaminated with mercury. Vendors occasionally identified Vietnam as a source of counterfeit products, but often the source was unknown. Mercury continues to be the metal of greatest concern in skin creams. Creams with more than 1,000 μg/g of mercury are a common cause of dermatitis (27% of cases). A new XRF analyzer was also able to detect more lead and arsenic than that used in analyses performed in 2011, and these two metals also exceeded ASEAN guidelines. Arsenic contamination also reflected the presence of bismuth in creams. Conclusion. Some producers of skin-whitening creams in Thailand, China and Taiwan appear to be aware of the risks of mercury contamination and have modified their products. However, other producers of skin-whitening creams continue to use mercury. XRF analysis allows for rapid screening of mercury in cosmetics and should be used to gather additional information on mercury content in cosmetics in support of public health efforts to stem the import, export and sales of skin creams containing mercury.
