Assessing the leaching of cadmium in an irrigated and grazed pasture soil
2022
McDowell, R.W.
To decrease the concentration of the toxic metal cadmium (Cd) in topsoil, and the human food chain, many countries have limited the Cd concentration allowed in phosphorus (P) fertilisers. However, to inform those limits we need accurate estimates of Cd leaching from established farming systems. Different soil layers were sampled to 2000 mm depth of a long-term trial that had applied 22.5 kg P ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ for 67 years to grazed pastures that received either no irrigation or were irrigated when soil moisture fell below 10 or 20%. The annual yield of Cd leaching from the top 150 mm of soil to the 151–250 mm layer was between 1.1 and 1.8 g ha⁻¹ with Cd leaching increasing with the frequency of irrigation. The rate of Cd accumulation measured to 2000 mm was within the mean and standard error estimated for treatments using a mass balance approach. Estimates of annual Cd leaching loss were like those established from field trials measuring leaching events over a year (0.3–1.8 g ha⁻¹) with a similar rate of P application (9–24 kg P ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹). Using a Cd leaching rate of 1.8 g ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ and P applications rates of 22.5 kg P ha⁻¹, topsoil Cd concentrations may stop increasing if Cd concentrations in P fertiliser can be maintained at < 72 mg Cd kg⁻¹ P.

Heavy metals and organic dyes are the major source of water pollution. Herein, a trifunctional β−cyclodextrin−ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid−chitosan (β−CD−EDTA−CS) polymer was synthesized using an easy and simple chemical route by the reaction of activated β−CD with CS through EDTA as a cross-linker (amidation reaction) for the removal of inorganic and organic pollutants from aqueous solution under different parameters such as pH, time effect, initial concentration, reusability, etc. The synthesized adsorbent was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), thermogravimetric analyzer techniques to investigate their structural, functional, morphological, elemental compositions, surface area and thermal properties, respectively. Two types of heavy metals, i.e., mercury (Hg²⁺) and cadmium (Cd²⁺), and three organic dyes, i.e., methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV) and safranin O (SO) were chosen as inorganic and organic pollutants, respectively, to study the adsorption capacity of β-CD-EDTA-CS in aqueous solution. The β-CD-EDTA-CS shows monolayer adsorption capacity 346.30 ± 14.0 and 202.90 ± 13.90 mg g⁻¹ for Hg²⁺ and Cd²⁺, respectively, and a heterogeneous adsorption capacity 107.20 ± 5.70, 77.40 ± 5.30 and 55.30 ± 3.60 mg g⁻¹ for MB, CV and SO, respectively. Kinetics results followed pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetics behavior for both metal ions and dyes, and higher rate constants values (0.00161–0.00368 g mg⁻¹ min⁻¹) for dyes confirmed the cavitation of organic dyes (physisorption). In addition, we have also demonstrated the performance of β-CD-EDTA-CS for the of four heavy metals Hg²⁺, Cd²⁺, Ni²⁺, and Cu²⁺ and three dyes MB, CV, and SO in secondary treated wastewater. Findings of this study indicate that β-CD-EDTA-CS simple and essay to synthesize and can be use in wastewater treatment.

The iron and steel industry (ISI) is one of the most energy-intensive industries in China, which makes a substantial contribution to the emissions of air pollutants. Among the various manufacturing processes, sintering is the major emitting process, which shares over half of the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen oxide (NOₓ) and particulate matter (PM) for the entire industry. In this study we made a comprehensive evaluation of the air pollutant emissions from the sintering process of China's ISI in 2017 based on the Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) database and estimated the future reduction potentials. We found that there was a general decreasing trend of emission concentrations in the sintering flue gas in response to the strengthened emission control policies, but the mild increase of the oxygen content in the second half of the year flattened the decreasing trend, indicating the necessity for simultaneous control of the oxygen content in the flue gas. Despite the relative high standard-reaching rates of 90% to the emission concentration limits in GB 28662-2012, the standard-reaching rates to the ultra-low emission standards were only 12%, 40% and 27% for NOₓ, SO₂ and PM respectively, with the lowest value mostly occurred in the western provinces. In 2017, the NOₓ, SO₂ and PM emissions from the sintering process were 378.6 kt, 169.0 kt and 51.9 kt, respectively. If the ultra-low emission standards were met, the corresponding NOₓ, SO₂ and PM emissions would decrease by 69.9%, 52.9%, and 56.4% respectively, illustrating large emission reducing potentials by achieving the ultra-low emission standards.

Industrial phosphate rock (PR) treatment has introduced lead (Pb) contamination into phosphate mining wasteland, causing serious contamination. Although bioremediation is considered an effective method and studies have investigated the bioimmobilization of Pb contamination in phosphate mining wasteland by phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), the bioimmobilization mechanism remains unclear. In this study, a strain Citrobacter farmeri CFI-01 with phosphate-solubilizing and Pb-tolerant abilities was isolated from a phosphate mining wasteland. Liquid culture experiments showed that the maximum content of soluble phosphate and the percentage amount of Pb immobilized after 14 days were 351.5 mg/L and 98.18%, respectively, with a decrease in pH. Soil experiments showed that CFI-01 had reasonable bioimmobilization ability, and the percentage amount of Pb immobilized was increased by 7.790% and 22.18% in the groups inoculated with CFI-01, respectively, compared with that of the groups not inoculated with CFI-01. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses showed that the immobilization of Pb was also ascribed to changes in the functional groups (e.g., hydroxyl and carboxyl groups) and the formation of lead phosphate sediments. Finally, the results of the metagenomic analysis indicated that changes in the microbial community structure, enrichment of related functional abundances (e.g., metal metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and amino acid metabolism functions), and activation of functional genes (e.g., zntA, smtB, cadC, ATOX1, smtA, and ATX1) could help immobilize soil Pb contamination and explore the mechanism of bacterial bioimmobilization in Pb-contaminated soil. This study provides insights for exploring the immobilization mechanism of Pb contamination in phosphate mining wasteland using PSB, which has significance for further research.

Muscle melanisation in sand flathead is visible as black spots in the normally white flesh of fish. It is widespread in Tasmania, including at the Tamar Estuary, with increasing frequency of reporting by recreational fishers. The phenomenon is more prevalent in areas impacted by heavy metal pollution and has been linked to heavy metal accumulation. In this study, image processing software ImageJ was employed to study the phenomenon and to establish an objective rating system. A longitudinal profile plot was used to study the greying of the fillet. The degree of melanisation was rated based on the percentage surface area melanised on the surface and in transverse sections of fillets. A muscle melanisation scoring system for sand flathead was established based on visual interpretation using the macroscopic melanisation scoring criteria: melanisation scores 0 = <0.5%, 1 = 0.5–5%, 2 = 5–20%, and 3 = >20% (% = melanised surface area in proportion to the whole fillet). A refined image analysis technique was developed to quantify the percentage of melanised muscle surface area and the muscle melanisation scoring system was statistically validated. Sand flathead fillet with higher melanisation score was shown to be linked to increased intensity of greyness and greater numbers and size of black spots on the surface of fillets and within the flesh. The greying and black spots were primarily concentrated at the anterior region of fillet and around the dorsal vertebrae zone on transverse section of fillets. Overall, findings from this study established the use of image analysis techniques to validate visual inspection and to give a standardised and objective method to determine the degree of melanisation in sand flathead. As muscle melanisation appears to be linked to heavy metal pollution, the standardised scoring system would facilitate future research for environmental pollution and monitoring purposes.

Microplastics are sometimes considered not harmful at environmentally relevant concentrations. Yet, such studies were conducted under standard thermal conditions and thereby ignored the impacts of higher mean temperatures (MT), and especially daily temperature fluctuations (DTF) under global warming. Moreover, an evolutionary perspective may further benefit the future risk assessment of microplastics under global warming. Here, we investigated the effects of two generations of exposure to an environmentally relevant concentration of polystyrene microplastics (5 μg L⁻¹) under six thermal conditions (2 MT × 3 DTF) on the life history, physiology, and behaviour of Daphnia magna. To assess the impact of thermal evolution we thereby compared Daphnia populations from high and low latitudes. At the standard ecotoxic thermal conditions (constant 20 °C) microplastics almost had no effect except for a slight reduction of the heartbeat rate. Yet, at the challenging thermal conditions (higher MT and/or DTF), microplastics affected each tested variable and caused an earlier maturation, a higher fecundity and intrinsic growth rate, a decreased heartbeat rate, and an increased swimming speed. These effects may be partly explained by hormesis and/or an adaptive response to stress in Daphnia. Moreover, exposure to microplastics at the higher mean temperature increased the fecundity and intrinsic growth rate of cold-adapted high-latitude Daphnia, but not of the warm-adapted low-latitude Daphnia, suggesting that thermal evolution in high-latitude Daphnia may buffer the effects of microplastics under future warming. Our results highlight the critical importance of DTF and thermal evolution for a more realistic risk assessment of microplastics under global warming.

Middya, Asif Iqbal | Roy, Sarbani
Poor air quality is becoming a critical environmental concern in different countries over the last several years. Most of the air pollutants have serious consequences on human health and wellbeing. In this context, efficient forecasting of air pollutants is currently crucial to predict future events with a view to taking corrective actions and framing effective environmental policies. Although deep learning (DL) as well as statistical forecasting models are investigated in the literature, they have rarely used in air pollutant-specific optimal model building for long-term forecasting. In this paper, our aim is to develop the pollutant-specific optimal forecasting models for the phases spanning from preprocessing to model building by investigating a set of predictive techniques. In this regard, this paper presents a methodology for long-term forecasting of some important air pollutants. More specifically, a total of eight best performing models such as stacked LSTM, LSTM auto-encoder, Bi-LSTM, convLSTM, Holt-Winters, auto-regressive (AR), SARIMA, and Prophet are investigated for developing pollutant-specific optimal forecasting models. The study is carried out based on the real-world data obtained from government-run air quality monitoring units in Kolkata over a period of 4 years. The models such as Holt-Winters, Bi-LSTM, and ConvLSTM achieve high forecasting accuracy with respect to MAE and RMSE values for majority of the pollutants.

Preconception and prenatal exposure to phthalates has been associated with an increased risk of preterm birth. However, it is unclear whether there are periods of heightened susceptibility during pregnancy. This prospective cohort study included 386 women undergoing fertility treatment who gave birth to a singleton infant during 2005 through 2018. Eleven phthalate metabolites were measured in spot urine samples collected at each trimester. In approximately 50% of participants, two metabolites of 1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid diisononyl ester (DINCH), a phthalate substitute, were also measured. The molar sum of four di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate metabolites (∑DEHP) was calculated. We evaluated the associations of mean maternal biomarker concentrations with risk of preterm birth using modified log-binomial models and utilized multiple informant models to compare trimester-specific associations. We examined the relative biomarker concentration across gestation comparing women with preterm birth to women with term delivery using quadratic mixed model. The risk ratio for preterm birth associated with a one-unit increase in the natural log-transformed urinary concentrations of ∑DEHP (mean during pregnancy) was 1.21 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.84, 1.72). In multiple informant models, these associations were strongest in the third trimester (RR = 1.51; 95% CI: 1.17, 1.95). Estimated mean ∑DEHP concentrations were higher among women with preterm than term delivery, especially late in gestation. Associations with preterm birth were also observed for each of the four individual DEHP metabolites. Detection of cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid monocarboxyisooctyl ester (MCOCH), a metabolite of DINCH, appeared to be positively related to preterm birth. In this prospective cohort of subfertile couples, maternal ∑DEHP metabolite concentrations during pregnancy were associated with an increased risk of preterm birth, particularly during late gestation.

Groundwater nitrate (NO₃⁻) pollution is a worldwide environmental problem. Therefore, identification and partitioning of its potential sources are of great importance for effective control of groundwater quality. The current study was carried out to identify the potential sources of groundwater NO₃⁻ pollution and determine their apportionment in different land use/land cover (LULC) types in a traditional agricultural area, Weining Plain, in Northwest China. Multiple hydrochemical indices, as well as dual NO₃⁻ isotopes (δ¹⁵N–NO₃ and δ¹⁸O–NO₃), were used to investigate the groundwater quality and its influencing factors. LULC patterns of the study area were first determined by interpreting remote sensing image data collected from the Sentinel-2 satellite, then the Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR) was used to estimate proportional contributions of the potential sources to groundwater NO₃⁻ concentrations. Groundwater quality in the study area was influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors, with anthropological impact being more important. The results of LULC revealed that the irrigated land is the dominant LULC type in the plain, covering an area of 576.6 km² (57.18% of the total surface study area of the plain). On the other hand, the results of the NO₃⁻ isotopes suggested that manure and sewage (M&S), as well as soil nitrogen (SN), were the major contributors to groundwater NO₃⁻. Moreover, the results obtained from the MixSIAR model showed that the mean proportional contributions of M&S to groundwater NO₃⁻ were 55.5, 43.4, 21.4, and 78.7% in the forest, irrigated, paddy, and urban lands, respectively. While SN showed mean proportional contributions of 29.9, 43.4, 61.5, and 12.7% in the forest, irrigated, paddy, and urban lands, respectively. The current study provides valuable information for local authorities to support sustainable groundwater management in the study region.

Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) as the flame retardant is heavily used in daily necessities, causing adverse health effects on humans. This study aimed to evaluate the hepatotoxicity of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), the most widely used PBDE, in lean and high-fat diet (HFD)-treated obese mice and elucidate the underlying mechanism. Firstly, the increasing levels of TG and proinflammatory factors in the liver and ALT and AST in serum demonstrated the hepatic damage caused by BDE-209 and further exacerbated by HFD. Tunel image revealed that BDE-209 induced more severe hepatocyte apoptosis with the assistant of HFD. Next, the mechanism analysis showed that the pro-apoptotic action of BDE-209 was in an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)/Ca²⁺ flux/mitochondria-dependent manner, concluded from the impairment of mitochondrial membrane potential, the enhancive protein expression of p-PERK/PERK, p-IRE1/IRE1, ATF6, CHOP, Bax/Bcl-2, cleaved caspase-3/caspase-3, IP3R1 and Sig-1R, and the over-transfer of Ca²⁺ from ER to mitochondria. Such proposed mechanism was further confirmed by the IP3R1 siRNA transfection cell experiment, where apoptotic rate was reduced in parallel with the reduced mitochondrial Ca²⁺ level. Finally, the higher expression of PACS-2 protein and the expanded ER contributed to the enriched ER-mitochondria interaction, reflected by the closer distance between ER and mitochondria visually displayed in the TEM image in HFD groups. This change was conducive to the rapid delivery of apoptosis signals via Ca²⁺, as proven, mechanically explaining the strengthening effect of HFD on BDE-209 hepatotoxicity. These findings detailedly explained the mechanism of BDE-209 hepatotoxicity and clarified the auxiliary effect of HFD, providing a theoretical basis for further studying other analogs.
