The distribution characteristics, sources and ecological risk of antimony (Sb) in the surface sediments of Changjiang Estuary and the adjacent sea were studied. Sb concentrations ranged from 0.320 to 0.968 μg g−1 with mean value of 0.577 μg g−1. Sb concentrations were relatively high in sediments of the south Yellow Sea, the Hangzhou Bay mouth and the inner Changjiang Estuary. The variation trend of Sb concentrations was controlled by hydrodynamics, Al/Fe/Mn oxides. Sb also showed strong chalcophile property. Correlation analysis and enrichment factor showed Sb came mainly from natural sources. Total Sb sediment flux in the study area was 446.3 t/yr. The Changjiang River, the Yellow River and atmospheric inputs accounted for 85.7%, 13.9%, and 0.4% of the total sediment Sb flux, respectively. The result of potential ecological index indicated the very low Sb concentrations could hardly threat the ecological environment of the study area.

Concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), grain sizes, and concentrations of organic carbon (Corg) were measured in 323 river sediment samples from the Pearl River Delta (PRD). Results showed that the heavy metal concentrations in the sediments ranged from 1.6–93 mg/kg for As, 0.04–9.3 mg/kg for Cd, 2–315 mg/kg for Cr, 1.1–352 mg/kg for Cu, 0.01–0.67 mg/kg for Hg, 11–221 mg/kg for Pb, and 11–1234 mg/kg for Zn. The highest values of As, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn appeared in the Beijiang River, whereas Cd was high in the Xijiang River. The overall sediment quality in the area with respect to metal concentrations generally met the primary standard criteria of China (Marine Sediment Quality), except for Cd and Cu. The spatial distributions of the heavy metals were influenced by both grain sizes and Corg concentrations. The Igeo geo-accumulation index indicated that there was no significant Cr, Cu, Hg, or Zn pollution, slight to moderate pollution by As and Pb, and moderate Cd pollution in the study area. Spatial distributions of an eco-toxicological index based on probable effect levels indicated that there was a 21% probability that the combination of the seven metals was exerting a toxic stress in the PRD river sediments.

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that is well known for its teratogenic, mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. In this study, we applied metabolomics to investigate the tissue-specific metabolic responses of the Pinctada martensii digestive glands and gills after a short-duration exposure to BaP (1 μg/L and 10 μg/L). After 72 h of exposure to BaP, the majority of metabolite changes were related to osmolytes, energy metabolites, and amino acids. BaP (1 μg/L) accelerated energy deterioration and decreased osmotic regulation, while BaP (10 μg/L) disturbed energy metabolism and increased osmotic stress in the digestive glands. Both BaP doses disturbed osmotic regulation and energy metabolism in the gills. BaP also induced neurotoxicity in both tissues. These findings demonstrated that BaP exhibited tissue-specific metabolic responses in P. martensii. The difference in these metabolite responses between the digestive glands and gills might prove to be suitable biomarkers for indicating exposure to specific marine pollutants.

Birch, G.F. | Cox, B.M. | Besley, C.H.
Research into sediment-seagrass tissue metal relationships has been undertaken in Sydney estuary due to the recognized role contamination plays in threats to seagrass health. Seagrass (Halophila ovalis) leaf tissue concentrations are elevated in Cu, Pb and Zn and contain the highest reported root Cr concentrations. Seagrass metal concentrations were significantly different between species H. ovalis and Zostera capricorni; between root and leaf tissue; and between sampling locations. Greatest tissue enrichment was for Pb, however metals were not enriched in seagrass relative to surficial sediment. Fine and total sediment metal concentrations were temporally consistent between collection years 2013/15, whereas root tissue metals changed between years and sites and leaf metal contents were temporally inconsistent. Extractable metal concentrations in fine sediment (<62.5 μm) showed moderate significant correlation with root tissue and a weak significant relationship with leaf tissue, whereas total sediment metal showed no such relationships. Management implications are provided.

The North Yellow Sea is a major aquaculture production area for the scallop Patinopecten yessoensis. In this study, the temporal and spatial variation of phycotoxins in scallops, phytoplankton, and their cysts were analyzed during a survey conducted from June 2011 to April 2012 around Zhangzi Island. The study area is a semi-enclosed epicontinental sea surrounded by the Shandong Peninsula, the Liaodong Peninsula and the Korean Peninsula. The three main results of the study were as follows: (1) The saxitoxin-group toxins, okadaic acid and analogues, and pectenotoxins were the major phycotoxin residues found in scallops; (2) Six kinds of toxic microalgae were identified, Protoperidinium spp., Gonyaulax spp., and Alexandrium spp. were the dominant taxa; Seven types of potential marine toxin-producing dinoflagellates, A. tamarense, A. catenella, Dinophysis fortii, G. catenatum, Gambierdiscus toxicus, Azadinium poporum, and Pseudo-nitzschia pungen were identified as the primary source of phycotoxins and were present at relatively high density from June to October; and (3) azaspiracids and domoic acid might be new potential sources of toxin pollution. This study represents the first assessment to phycotoxins around Zhangzi Island in the North Yellow Sea.

The present study has evaluated temporal and spatial mercury trends based on surficial sediment samples and 210Pb-dated sediment profiles. The obtained results show that there are areas close to the main bay's tributary rivers where the Hg content has doubled during the last 15 years and regions where it has decreased by a factor of 2, mainly the area close to the navigation channel, which is submitted to periodic dredging. In the inner part of the bay, the most contaminated region, mercury shows a strong association with sulfide. In the same region, based on the 210Pb results, it was possible to calculate the yearly increment on the Hg concentration in the surface sediment, 0.62 μg kg−1 y−1 to 0.29 μg kg−1 y−1, according to the distance to the bay's main tributary rivers.

Mineral extraction from the seabed has experienced a recent surge of interest from both the mining industry and marine scientists. While improved methods of geological investigation have enabled the mapping of new seafloor mineral reserves, the ecological impacts of mining in both the deep sea and the shallow seabed are poorly known. This paper presents a synthesis of the empirical evidence from experimental seabed mining and parallel industries to infer the effects of seabed mineral extraction on marine ecosystems, focusing on polymetallic nodules and ferromanganese concretions. We use a problem-structuring framework to evaluate causal relationships between pressures caused by nodule extraction and the associated changes in marine ecosystems. To ensure that the rationale behind impact assessments is clear, we propose that future impact assessments use pressure-specific expert elicitation. We further discuss integrating ecosystem services in the impact assessments and the implications of current methods for environmental risk assessments.

Past climate changes provide important clues for advancement of studies on current global change biology. We have tested large-scale biogeographic patterns through four marine groups from twelve Atlantic Ocean archipelagos and searched for patterns between species richness/endemism and littoral area, age, isolation, latitude and mean annual sea-surface temperatures. Species richness is strongly correlated with littoral area. Two reinforcing effects take place during glacial episodes: i) species richness is expected to decrease (in comparison with interglacial periods) due to the local disappearance of sandy/muddy-associated species; ii) because littoral area is minimal during glacial episodes, area per se induces a decrease on species richness (by extirpation/extinction of marine species) as well as affecting speciation rates. Maximum speciation rates are expected to occur during the interglacial periods, whereas immigration rates are expected to be higher at the LGM. Finally, sea-level changes are a paramount factor influencing marine biodiversity of animals and plants living on oceanic islands.

Morabito, Elisa | Radaelli, Marta | Corami, Fabiana | Turetta, Clara | Toscano, Giuseppa | Capodaglio, Gabriele
In order to study the role of sediment re-suspension and deposition versus the role of organic complexation, we investigated the speciation of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) in samples collected in the Venice Lagoon during several campaigns from 1992 to 2006. The increment in Cd and Pb concentration in the dissolved phases, observed in the central and northern basins, can be linked to important alterations inside the lagoon caused by industrial and urban factors. The study focuses on metal partition between dissolved and particulate phases. The analyses carried out in different sites illustrate the complex role of organic matter in the sedimentation process. While Cd concentration in sediments can be correlated with organic matter, no such correlation can be established in the case of Pb, whose particulate concentration is related only to the dissolved concentration. In the case of Cu, the role of organic complexation remains unclear.

Here we present the findings of a study where 598 isolates of Escherichia coli (351 derived from seawater; 247 derived from the Venus clam, Circenita callipyga) were obtained from Kuwait's marine environment. Isolates were screened for their potential resistance to an array of 23 commonly deployed frontline antibiotics. Results demonstrate the resistant was widespread across all sites with high-levels of resistance (seawater: summer 89–64%; winter 90–57% and biota: summer 77%; winter 88%) observed to at least 1 of the 23 antibiotics tested. Resistance to Ampicillin was by far the most widely observed profile in seawater and biota across both summer and winter seasons, with 55.9 to 70.9% isolates displaying resistance to this antibiotic. This study demonstrates the potential of AMR screening to be used in Kuwait to detect issues related to water quality and the consequences it may pose for human health.
