Microplastics do not increase toxicity of a hydrophobic organic chemical to marine plankton
2019
Beiras, Ricardo | Tato, Tania
Planktonic sea-urchin larvae actively ingest polyethylene microplastics (MP) that accumulate in the larval stomach and can be distinguished from natural food using polarized light microscopy. MP filtering rates were similar to those of natural particles (microalgae) of the same size range; 0.30 to 0.35 mL min⁻¹. However, the ingestion of MP did not increase the toxicity of a hydrophobic organic chemical, the 4‑n‑nonylphenol (NP), either in microalgae-fed or starved larvae. The 48 h EC₅₀ of NP was more than two fold higher in fed (158.8 to 190.9 μg L⁻¹) compared to starved larvae (64.3 to 83.7 μg L⁻¹), disregarding the presence and amount of MP, which did not significantly affect larval growth. Therefore, MP did not act as vectors of a hydrophobic chemical such as NP to these planktonic organisms. These results challenge the hypothetical role of MP as vectors of organic contaminants to marine food webs.

Due to the effects of heightened warming in the Arctic, there has been an urgency to develop methods for detecting oil in (or under) sea ice, owing to increasing potential for oil exploration and ship traffic in the more accessible Arctic regions. To test the potential for radar utilizing the normalized radar cross section (NRCS) of the sea ice, an oil-in-ice mesocosm experiment was performed. Throughout the experiment, corn oil was used as a surrogate for medium crude oil, to assess oil movement tendencies in sea ice, and the resultant impact on the complex permittivity through measurement and modelling techniques. We performed a modelling study to establish the effects of corn oil on the NRCS of sea ice. The oil presence in the sea ice increased the temperature and reduced the salinity of the sea ice, thereby lowering its complex permittivity and modeled NRCS when compared to control sea ice.

Djiboutian coral reefs are poorly studied, but are of critical importance to tourism and artisanal fishing in this small developing nation. In 2014 and 2016 we carried out the most comprehensive survey of Djiboutian reefs to date, and present data on their ecology, health and estimate their vulnerability to future coral bleaching and anthropogenic impacts. Reef type varied from complex reef formations exposed to wind and waves along the Gulf of Aden, to narrow fringing reefs adjacent to the deep sheltered waters of the Gulf of Tadjoura. Evidence suggests that in the past 35 years the reefs have not previously experienced severe coral bleaching or significant human impacts, with many reefs having healthy and diverse coral and fish populations. Mean coral cover was high (52%) and fish assemblages were dominated by fishery target species and herbivores. However, rising sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and rapid recent coastal development activities in Djibouti are likely future threats to these relatively untouched reefs.

2019
Several country–wide bans have recently been implemented for microbeads, which are a form of microplastics that are found in our oceans. The effect of the ban on reducing the overall quantity of microplastics in our oceans, however, may not be significant. This paper explores the scientific data related to microbeads to evaluate whether an underlying risk or combination of risks led to the ban, what impact public perception and activism had on this issue, and how this case study may be extrapolated to other emerging issues, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). In some cases, the strategy for communicating with the public and managing the outrage can be equally as important as the regulatory and technical strategies.

2019
Dredging poses a potential threat to coral reefs, yet quantifying impacts is often difficult due to the large spatial footprint of potential effects and co-occurrence of other disturbances. Here we analyzed in situ monitoring data and remotely-sensed sediment plumes to assess impacts of the 2013–2015 Port of Miami dredging on corals and reef habitat. To control for contemporaneous bleaching and disease, we analyzed the spatial distribution of impacts in relation to the dredged channel. Areas closer to dredging experienced higher sediment trap accumulation, benthic sediment cover, coral burial, and coral mortality, and our spatial analyses indicate that >560,000 corals were killed within 0.5 km, with impacts likely extending over 5–10 km. The occurrence of sediment plumes explained ~60% of spatial variability in measured impacts, suggesting that remotely-sensed plumes, when properly calibrated against in situ monitoring data, can reliably estimate the magnitude and extent of dredging impacts.

2019
Acosta-Coley, Isabel | Mendez-Cuadro, Dario | Rodriguez-Cavallo, Erika | Rosa, Jesús de la | Olivero-Verbel, Jesus
Microplastics are new pollutants considered a source of concern for the oceans worldwide. This research reports the concentrations of trace metals on microplastics collected on beaches from Cartagena, an industrialized city in the Caribbean. Mercury (Hg) was quantified using a Hg analyzer and forty-seven trace elements were assessed by ICP/MS. Most abundant microplastics in beaches were those with the lower degree of surface degradation features (SDF), categorized as white-new polyethylene pellets, followed by secondary microplastics (SM). Greater Hg levels were found in SM, white-degraded (WDP) and black pellets. Trace elements concentrations were linked to the degree of SDF registered in examined pellets, with larger concentrations in WDP. Compared to white-new pellets, Ba, Cr, Rb, Sr, Ce, Zr, Ni, Pb were the most accumulated elements in WDP, as their surface enhance the sorption processes. Microplastic pollution represents a toxicological hazard because its ability to accumulate and transport toxic elements.

The concentrations of some trace metals in the Acropora downingi coral skeleton and sediment samples of Khark Island, Chirouyeh and Hendorabi Island in the northern part of the Persian Gulf were evaluated to determine the ecological risks of trace metal contamination in the sediment. Risk assessment indices revealed that Cd in all of the studied areas as well as Ni and Pb in Chirouyeh site would be expected to cause ecological risk occasionally. Moreover, Chirouyeh site showed a high tendency for trace metal adsorption. Khark and Chirouyeh sites showed higher risk values than the unpopulated Hendorabi, indicating that the anthropogenic activities had a significant impact on the trace metal contamination. Multivariate clustering dendrogram and Pearson's correlation coefficient indicated that Pb originated mainly from anthropogenic sources, Cu originated from both anthropogenic and natural sources, while other metals mainly originated from natural sources. The adsorption rate of trace metals in sediment samples was significantly correlated with the physico-chemical properties of the environment, whereas the uptake of trace metals by the Acropora downingi corals seemed to be dependent on their metabolic factors. Overall, the results showed that coral (Acropora downingi) reef ecosystems of the Persian Gulf are at the low to moderate risk of trace metal contamination of the bottom sediment. Overall, this study provides a 'snapshot' of the status of trace metals pollution in the coral reef ecosystems of the Persian Gulf, and also highlights the need for long-term studies in order to understand, monitor and mitigate further trace metal pollution in the region.

Silver (Ag) is a non-essential metal known to bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms. We determined Ag concentrations in five false killer whales stranded in South America. Silver concentrations (in dry weight basis) range as 6.62–10.78 μg g⁻¹ in liver, 0.008–7.41 μg g⁻¹ in spleen, 0.004–5.71 μg g⁻¹ in testis, 0.757–1.69 μg g⁻¹ in kidney, 0.011–0.078 μg g⁻¹ in lung and < 0.01–0.038 μg g⁻¹ in muscle, whereas in the single samples of uterus and ovary were 0.051 and 0.023 μg g⁻¹; respectively. Overall, Ag concentration in liver and kidney exceeded the cetacean toxic thresholds, proposed as “unhealthy concentrations” and “critically dangerous” in liver and kidney. These results warrant further eco-toxicological studies, to examine biological effects of elevated silver levels for individuals and to assess the species' conservation status with respect to marine pollution.

2019
Microbial communities in wetland soils play vital roles in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients. In this study, the soil samples were collected from Suaeda, reed and Suaeda-reed hybrid zones in Shuangtaizi River Estuary, Northeast China, and the rhizosphere bacterial communities were compared using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The microbial richness, diversity and structure of bacterial communities varied greatly in reed and Suaeda. Canonical correspondence analysis and Mantel test indicated that pH was the most significant factor (P < 0.05) in bacterial community assembly. Proteobacteria was the most dominant phylum, accounting for 45.7–58.0% of the total sequences. Thioprofundum, Thiohalomonas and Exiguobacterium were the predominant genera in Suaeda, while Exiguobacterium, Gillisia, Desulfomonile, Citrobacter, Thioprofundum and Acinetobacter were the core species in reed. PICRUSt analysis revealed similar functional profiles of rhizosphere microbiota in reed and Suaeda. Nitrate reduction related genes were abundant for nitrogen metabolism, whereas assimilatory sulfate reduction was the major process for sulfur metabolism.

2019
Today, four decades past peak anthropogenic lead emissions in the 1970s, dissolved lead (DPb) concentrations in the surface ocean remain elevated. To constrain contemporary sources and sinks of DPb, we studied high latitude surface waters of the North Atlantic and the Southern Ocean. We observed high concentrations of surface DPb (46 pmol kg⁻¹) near South Georgia in the Southern Ocean, sourced from glacial flour, while offshore DPb concentrations of 3–9 pmol kg⁻¹ were attributable to aeolian Pb inputs mainly from Patagonia. Dissolved Pb in the North Atlantic (4–29 pmol kg⁻¹) originated from aeolian particles from Northern Hemisphere sources. Extremely low DPb concentrations of <5 pmol kg⁻¹ found in both polar regions were the result of scavenging of DPb onto biogenic particles formed during spatially confined phytoplankton blooms, indicating that changes in phytoplankton abundance may alter the residence time and distribution of DPb in the surface ocean.
