2021
Liu, Shejiang | Miao, Chen | Yao, Shanshan | Ding, Hui | Zhang, Kai
It is vital for the development and application of heavy metal stabilization/solidification (S/S) agents to reveal the mechanism of the reaction between water-soluble thiourea formaldehyde (WTF) resin and heavy metal and evaluate its repairing effect. Based on the density functional theory analysis of the WTF resin structure, the mechanism analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that the three-dimensional network structure with thiocarbonyl and hydroxyl groups is very conducive to the capture of Cd²⁺. The reduction rate of Cd²⁺ in soil added WTF resin could reach 70.6%–86.0%. The result of BCR’s sequential extraction also proved that the 86.4%–94.1% of Cd in the soil repaired by WTF resin changed from acid-soluble state to residue state. Enzyme activity analysis and 16sRNA sequencing experiments showed that such a structure does not harm soil health. The urease and phosphatase tests showed the nitrogen and phosphorus cycle of the soil added WTF resin was repaired. Even compared with the remediation agents Na₂S and hydroxyapatite, WTF resin still performed better in repairing soil health. These findings provide valuable insights into the efficient causes of WTF resin and its harmless effects on soil. The results obtained provide a critical reference for the future application of practical and gentle heavy metal S/S agents.

Antibiotics are emerging pollutants in our environment. These treatments have been widely used for their low cost, convenient use, and prominent effects. However, the prolonged or excessive use of such drugs can cause toxicity in aquatic organisms. These effects include genotoxicity, metabolic alteration, delayed development and decreased immunity, which carry further risks for ecological systems. In the present study, juvenile common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed to norfloxacin (NOR) for 42 days, with NOR concentrations ranging from 100 ng/L to 1 mg/L, to assess the effects of environmental concentrations of antibiotics, to investigate the effects of NOR on intestinal morphology, enzymatic activity, and transcriptomic levels of RNA in fish, as well as a risk assessment on human health was carried out. The results demonstrated that oxidative stress was induced, the barrier function of the intestine was damaged, and changes occurred in the expression of immune-related genes in fish chronically exposed to antibiotics. Moreover, NOR could affect the regulation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. Thus, environmental concentrations of antibiotics can influence the intestinal health of fish and potentially posing health risks to humans.

Metal-resistant bacteria can reduce Cd accumulation in plants, but mechanisms underlying this effect are poorly understood. In this study, a highly effective Cd-resistant WRS8 strain was obtained from the rhizoshere soil of Triticum aestivum L. Yangmai-13 and identified as Pseudomonas taiwanensis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Strain WRS8 was investigated for its effects on Cd availability and wheat tissue Cd contents and the related mechanisms using a hydroponic culture experiment. In strain WRS8-inoculated solution, the Cd concentration reduced and the pH and cell-adsorbed Cd increased with time. Strain WRS8 increased the wheat root and above-ground tissue dry weights by 11–36% compared to the controls. In strain WRS8-inoculated wheat plants, the Cd contents of the roots and above-ground tissues decreased by 78–85% and 88–94% and the Cd bioconcentration and translocation factors decreased by 78–85% and 46–58% at days 3 and 10, respectively, compared with the controls. The root surface-adsorbed Cd contents increased by 99–121% in the WRS8 strain-inoculated wheat plants at days 3 and 10 compared to the controls. Furthermore, strain WRS8 colonized the wheat root surfaces and interiors and reduced the expression levels of the LCT1 and HMA2 genes involved in Cd accumulation and transport in wheat roots by 46% and 30%, respectively, compared to the controls. In the Cd-contaminated soils, strain WRS8 significantly reduced the available Cd content by 20–24% and increased the pH compared to the controls. These findings showed the important role of strain WRS8 in reducing solution and soil Cd availability and suggested that strain WRS8 reduced the wheat tissue Cd accumulation by increasing root surface Cd adsorption and decreasing wheat root Cd uptake and transport-related gene expression and may provide a new and effective wheat rhizobacteria-enhanced approach for reducing wheat Cd uptake in Cd-polluted environments.

2021
Fortuna, Lorenzo | González, Aridane G. | Tretiach, Mauro | Pokrovsky, Oleg S.
Despite the broad use of lichens as biomonitors of airborne trace elements, the surface chemistry and metal adsorption parameters of these organisms are still poorly known. The current investigation is aimed at (i) quantifying the acid-base surface properties and the first-order physical-chemical parameters of Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ adsorption of devitalized Pseudevernia furfuracea, a lichen commonly used in biomonitoring of airborne trace elements, and (ii) comparing the results with those available for moss biomonitors. Equilibrium constants and metal-binding site concentrations were calculated with a thermodynamic model by taking into account the presence/absence of ancillary extracellular cell wall compounds, namely melanin and acetone-soluble lichen substances. An acid–base titration experiment performed in the pH range of 3–10 showed that melanised and non-melanised P. furfuracea samples have lower pHPZC (3.53–3.99) and higher metal-binding site concentrations (0.96–1.20 mmol g⁻¹) compared to that of the mosses investigated so far at the same experimental conditions. Melanin biosynthesis increased the content of carboxyl and phosphoryl groups and reduces that of amine/polyphenols. Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ adsorption was unaffected by the degree of melanisation while the removal of extracellular lichen substances slightly decreased Zn²⁺ adsorption. Although Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ adsorption parameters related to P. furfuracea surfaces were 3 times lower than in the mosses, lichen samples adsorbed the same amount of Cu²⁺ and 30% more Zn²⁺. The present study contributes in understanding the role of ancillary cell wall compounds in Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ adsorption in a model lichen. It also provides a first comparison between the surface physico-chemical characteristics of lichens and mosses frequently used as biomonitors of trace elements.

2021

This work for the first time showed that sulfated BPA could be directly analyzed as BPA with GC-MS after the derivatization with N,O-bis-(trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA)+1% trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS), i.e. the deconjugation step was not necessary. This was because sulfated BPA indeed could be simultaneously deconjugated and derivatized to BPA derivative during derivatization, suggesting that any co-elution of BPA and sulfated BPA during sample extraction led to BPA overestimation in the GC-MS method with BSTFA +1% TMCS as the derivative reagent. Using BPA 4,4′-disulfates (BPA diS) as the pure standard, the co-elution phenomena of sulfated BPA was confirmed with two widely used elution solvents (i.e. methanol and ethyl acetate) or their mixed solutions with different ratios, which further suggested if only sulfated BPA existed in any wastewater sample, BPA was likely over-determined. To further confirm this finding, both influent and effluent samples collected from a local municipal wastewater treatment plant were analyzed, which clearly showed the overestimation of BPA in the two wastewaters due to co-existence of sulfated BPA in the wastewater samples. In addition to BPA, the results also showed the overestimation of other nine bisphenol analogues. As sulfated micropollutants including estrogens, androgens, phytoestrogens, etc., have been widely found in municipal wastewater, the overestimating phenomenon observed in this study may also be extended to determination of other micropollutants, which should be addressed in future.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly valuable component of syngas which could be used to synthesize various chemicals and fuels. Conventionally, syngas is derived from fossil-based natural gas and coal which are non-renewable. To curb the problem, CO₂ gasification offers a win-win solution in which CO₂ is converted with wastes to CO, achieving carbon emission mitigation and addressing waste disposal issue simultaneously. In this review, gasification of various wastes by CO₂ with particular focus given to generation of CO-rich syngas is presented and critically discussed. This includes the effects of operating parameters (temperature, pressure and physicochemical properties of feedstocks) and advanced CO₂ gasification techniques (catalytic CO₂ gasification, CO₂ co-gasification and microwave-driven CO₂ gasification). Furthermore, associated technological challenges are highlighted and way forward in this field are proposed.

Micro-crustaceans are important grazers that control the algal blooms in eutrophic lakes. However, we know little about how these key species may be affected by long-term exposure to contaminants and when the transgenerational effects are reversible and irreversible. To address this, we investigated the effects of lead (Pb, 100 μg L⁻¹) exposure on morphology and reproduction of Moina dubia for nine consecutive generations (F1–F9) in three treatments: control, Pb, and pPb (M. dubia from Pb-exposed parents returned to the control condition). In F1–F2, Pb did not affect morphology, and reproduction of M. dubia. In all later generations, Pb-exposed M. dubia had a smaller body and shorter antennae than those in control. In F3–F6, pPb-exposed animals showed no differences in body size and antennae compared to the control, suggesting recoverable effects. In F7–F9, the body size and antennae of pPb-exposed animals did not differ compared to Pb-exposed ones, and both were smaller than the control animals, suggesting irreversible effects. Pb exposure reduced the brood size, number of broods and total neonates per female in F3–F9, yet the reproduction could recover in pPb treatment until F7. No recovery of the brood size and number of broods per female was observed in pPb-exposed animals in the F8–F9. Our study suggests that long-term exposure to metals, here Pb, may cause irreversible impairments in morphology and reproduction of tropical urban micro-crustaceans that may lower the top-down control on algal blooms and functioning of eutrophic urban lakes.

The abuse or misuse of antibiotics is directly linked to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. Most fish farms located on Jeju Island operate a flow-through system that pumps in seawater for fish farming and discharges it back to the ocean. To investigate the amount of ARGs that these fish farm effluents discharge into the marine environment, we conducted a metagenomic-based resistome analysis. We observed higher levels of ARGs in fish farm effluents than in seawater at beach and residential areas. A greater proportion of ARGs was found on plasmid rather than on chromosomal DNA, especially for sulfonamide and phenicol classes. The distribution of ARGs did not differ between summer and winter, but the microbial community did. In addition, fish farm samples contained significantly more opportunistic pathogens (i.e., Vibrio, Photobacterium, Aliivibrio, and Tenacibaculum) and virulence factors than non-fish farm samples. Vibrio was the most frequently identified host of ARGs and virulence factors. The presence of Vibrio in the coastal area has been increasing owing to the recent rise in the temperature of seawater. This study suggests the need for actions to treat or monitor ARGs in the coastal areas where fish farms operating a flow-through system are located.

2021
Hoang, Anh Quoc | Tran, Tri Manh | Tu, Minh Binh | Takahashi, Shin
Contamination status, potential emission sources, environmental fate, and human exposure risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are reviewed for indoor and outdoor dust from Southeast Asian countries, under an international comparison point of view. PBDEs have been widely detected in house, workplace, car, and road dust samples collected from Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The highest PBDE levels up to hundreds of μg/g were found in settled dust from some e-waste processing areas in Thailand and Vietnam. Concentrations of PBDEs in house, car, and road dust from this region were generally lower than those reported in China and Western developed countries. BDE-209 was the most predominant congener in almost all analyzed samples, reflecting the widespread application of materials and products treated with commercial deca-BDE mixtures in this region. The market demand and application rate of commercial PBDE mixtures in Southeast Asia were lower than those documented for other regions in the world. As a result, PBDE contamination levels in the environments (e.g., indoor and outdoor dust) and associated risks in these countries were not significantly high. However, more attention should be paid to informal processing activities and management strategies for modern wastes such as e-waste, plastics, and end-of-life vehicles. There exist several knowledge gaps about spatiotemporal trends, potential sources, risk assessment, inventory, management, and legislation regarding PBDEs in dust from this region, which should be filled by additional comprehensive, detailed studies with relevant inter-country/regional monitoring schemes.

Pyriproxyfen is a juvenile hormone analogue insecticide used worldwide. At present, the potential threat of pyriproxyfen to aquatic organism has not been well explored. In this work, the bioaccumulation, metabolic profile and toxicity of pyriproxyfen and its metabolites to zebrafish were studied, and the enantioselectivity of pyriproxyfen and the major chiral metabolites were also determined. Sixteen metabolites of pyriproxyfen in zebrafish were identified. Hydroxylation, ether linkage cleavage and oxidation in phase I metabolism, followed by sulfate and glucuronic acid conjugation. The bioconcentration factors ranged from 1175 to 1246. Hydroxylation metabolites of pyriproxyfen showed enantioselective behavior in zebrafish with enantiomer fractions (EFs) of 4′–OH– pyriproxyfen and 5″–OH– pyriproxyfen ranged from 0.50 to 0.71. Toxicological indexes including acute toxicity, joint toxicity and oxidative stress were tested. Among all the metabolites, 4′–OH– pyriproxyfen was found 2 folds more toxic to zebrafish than pyriproxyfen. (−)-Pyriproxyfen was found 2 folds more toxic than rac- and (+)-pyriproxyfen. Antagonistic effects were found in binary joint toxicity of pyriproxyfen and its hydroxylated metabolites. Pyriproxyfen and its metabolites also showed oxidative stress damage by inhibiting the activity of CAT and SOD and increasing MDA. This work provided deep insight into the metabolism and the potential risks of pyriproxyfen to aquatic organisms.
