Microplastics in the Koshi River, a remote alpine river crossing the Himalayas from China to Nepal

Studies of microplastics (MPs) in remote, trans-boundary and alpine rivers are currently lacking. To understand the sinks and transport mechanisms of MPs, this study investigated the distributions and sources of MPs in the surface waters and sediments of five tributaries of the Koshi River (KR), a typical alpine river in the Himalayas between China and Nepal. Mean abundances of MPs in water and sediment were 202 ± 100 items/m³ and 58 ± 27 items/kg, dry weight, respectively. The upstream tributary, Pum Qu in China, had the smallest abundance of MPs, while the middle tributary, Sun Koshi in Nepal, had the greatest abundance. Compared to international values in rivers, contamination of the KR with MPs was low to moderate. Fibers represented 98% of all MP particles observed, which consisted of polyethylene, polyethyleneterephthalate, polyamide, polypropylene, and polystyrene. Blue and black MPs were prevalent, and small MPs (<1 mm) accounted for approximately 60% of all MPs. Atmospheric transmission and deposition were considered to be the principal sources of MPs in the upstream tributary. The results imply that point sources associated with mostly untreated sewage effluents and solid wastes from households, major settlements, towns, and cities were most important sources of MPs in the KR. Non-point sources from agricultural runoff and atmospheric transport and deposition in the middle stream tributaries also contribute a part of microplastics, while the least amount was from fishing in the downstream tributary. Urbanization, agriculture, traffic, and tourism contributed to pollution in the KR by MPs. Equations to predict abundances of MPs based on river altitudes revealed that different trends were affected by both natural and human factors within the KR basin. This study presents new insights into the magnitude of MP pollution of a remote alpine river and provides valuable data for developing MP monitoring and mitigation strategies in similar environments worldwide.

This study provided a monitoring of phenolic compounds occurrence in a river and in its treated water by a conventional water treatment plant (WTP) throughout a year-period, in Minas Gerais - Brazil. Furthermore, the environmental risk (hazard quotient - HQ), the human health risk (margin of exposure - MOE), and the cancer risk were calculated for the compounds. The results indicated that sixteen out of the seventeen investigated phenolic compounds were detected at some point during the sampling campaign. The most frequent compounds in the raw surface water were 2,3,4–trichlorophenol (234TCP), 2,4–dimethylphenol (24DMP), and 4–nitrophenol (4NP), whereas in treated water were 4NP and bisphenol A (BPA). In addition, the highest total concentration values were corelated to the months in which there was less precipitation, demonstrating that the presence of this micropollutants may be subject to seasonality. From the treated water results, it was not possible to state the efficiency of the conventional WTP in eliminating the phenols, since in some samples the phenolic compounds were totally removed and in others their increase or formation occurred. Regarding to the risk assessments, most of the evaluated compounds were considered highly toxic to some trophic level and posed a significant human health risk. Additionally, the risk reduction of phenolics using conventional WTP was low.The sixteen phenols contamination in surface and drinking waters appears to be subject to seasonality. Besides that, an alarming risk for environment and human health was identified.

Freshwater cyanobacteria produce highly toxic secondary metabolites, which can be transported downstream by rivers and waterways into the sea. Estuarine and coastal aquaculture sites exposed to toxic cyanobacteria raise concerns that shellfish may accumulate and transfer cyanotoxins in the food web. This study aims to describe the competitive pattern of uptake and depuration of a wide range of microcystins (MC-LR, MC-LF, MC-LW, MC-LY, [Asp3]-MC-LR/[Dha7]-MC-LR, MC-HilR) and nodularins (NOD cyclic and linear) within the common blue mussel Mytilus edulis exposed to a combined culture of Microcystis aeruginosa and Nodularia spumigena into the coastal environment.Different distribution profiles of MCs/NODs in the experimental system were observed. The majority of MCs/NODs were present intracellularly which is representative of healthy cyanobacterial cultures, with MC-LR and NOD the most abundant analogues. Higher removal rate was observed for NOD (≈96%) compared to MCs (≈50%) from the water phase. Accumulation of toxins in M. edulis was fast, reaching up to 3.4 μg/g shellfish tissue four days after the end of the 3-days exposure period, with NOD (1.72 μg/g) and MC-LR (0.74 μg/g) as the dominant toxins, followed by MC-LF (0.35 μg/g) and MC-LW (0.31 μg/g). Following the end of the exposure period depuration was incomplete after 27 days (0.49 μg/g of MCs/NODs). MCs/NODs were also present in faecal material and extrapallial fluid after 24 h of exposure with MCs the main contributors to the total cyanotoxin load in faecal material and NOD in the extrapallial fluid. Maximum concentration of MCs/NODs accumulated in a typical portion of mussels (20 mussels, ≈4 g each) was beyond greater the acute, seasonal and lifetime tolerable daily intake. Even after 27 days of depuration, consuming mussels harvested during even short term harmful algae blooms in close proximity to shellfish beds might carry a high health risk, highlighting the need for testing.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are emerging contaminants that pose a potential risk to human health worldwide. In this study, a metagenomic analysis was performed to investigate the distribution of ARGs in paddy field ecosystems, crayfish monoculture pond ecosystems, and rice-crayfish cultivation field ecosystems. The results showed that MacB and BcrA are two dominant ARGs, and macrolide is the dominant antibiotic not only in the water, but also in the sediment and gut of crayfish, in both the crayfish monoculture and the rice-crayfish cultivation ecosystems. Meanwhile, some lower-abundance ARGs in the water and sediment of crayfish cultivation ecosystems were significantly different in their abundance than those in rice paddy fields, and the ARGs in crayfish culture system and rice paddy fields showed even higher dissimilarities of diversity. Comprehensive analysis with redundancy analysis(RDA)and the distribution of dominant ARGs showed that the dissimilarity was related to the higher concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chlorophyll a (Chla), permanganate index (CODMₙ₎, and nitrate in the water of rice paddy fields, and was related to the higher contents of N, P, K, and organic matter (OM) in the sediment of rice paddy fields. The source trackers of ARGs within the crayfish cultivation ponds and the rice-crayfish cultivation fields showed that the sediment in crayfish cultivation ponds mainly played the role of the ‘sink’ for ARGs, and the water and gut of crayfish mutually contributed to the high rates of ARGs. The ARG contribution rates of crayfish gut and sediment decreased and increased, respectively, in rice-crayfish cultivation fields and in crayfish monoculture ponds, which might be related to the lower crayfish biomass and the lower water depth in rice-crayfish cultivation fields.

Maintaining thyroid homeostasis during pregnancy is vital for fetal development. The few studies that have investigated associations between metal exposure and gestational thyroid function have yielded mixed findings. To evaluate the association of exposure to a mixture of toxic metals with thyroid parameters in 824 pregnant women from the Rhea birth cohort in Crete, Greece. Concentrations of three toxic metals [cadmium (Cd), antimony (Sb), lead (Pb)] and iodine were measured in urine using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and thyroid hormones [Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (fT4), and free triiodothyronine (fT3)] were measured in serum in early pregnancy. Associations of individual metals with thyroid parameters were assessed using adjusted regression models, while associations of the metal mixture with thyroid parameters were assessed using Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR).Women with high (3rd tertile) concentrations of urinary Cd, Sb and Pb, respectively, had 13.3 % (95%CI: 2.0 %, 23.2 %), 12.5 % (95%CI: 1.8 %, 22.0 %) and 16.0 % (95%CI: 5.7 %, 25.2 %) lower TSH compared to women with low concentrations (2nd and 1st tertile). In addition, women with high urinary Cd had 2.2 % (95%CI: 0.0 %, 4.4 %) higher fT4 and 4.0 % (95%CI: −0.1 %, 8.1 %) higher fT3 levels, and women with high urinary Pb had 4 % (95%CI: 0.2 %, 8.0 %) higher fT3 levels compared to women with low exposure. The negative association of Cd with TSH persisted only when iodine sufficiency was unfavorable. BKMR attested that simultaneous exposure to toxic metals was associated with decreased TSH and increased fT3 and revealed a potential synergistic interaction of Cd and Pb in association with TSH. The present results suggest that exposure to toxic metals even at low levels can alter gestational thyroid homeostasis.

Microplastic pollution is a global concern theme, and there is still the need for less laborious and faster analytical methods aiming at microplastics detection. This article describes a high throughput screening method based on near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (HSI-NIR) to identify microplastics in beach sand automatically with minimum sample preparation. The method operates directly in the entire sample or on its retained fraction (150 μm–5 mm) after sieving. Small colorless microplastics (<600 μm) that would probably be imperceptible as a microplastic by visual inspection, or missed during manual pick up, can be easily detected. No spectroscopic subsampling was performed due to the high-speed analysis of line-scan instrumentation, allowing multiple microplastics to be assessed simultaneously (video available). This characteristic is an advantage over conventional infrared (IR) spectrometers. A 75 cm² scan area was probed in less than 1 min at a pixel size of 156 × 156 μm. An in-house comprehensive spectral dataset, including weathered microplastics, was used to build multivariate supervised soft independent modelling of class analogy (SIMCA) classification models. The chemometric models were validated for hundreds of microplastics (primary and secondary) collected in the environment. The effect of particle size, color and weathering are discussed. Models' sensitivity and specificity for polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyamide-6 (PA), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polystyrene (PS) were over 99% at the defined statistical threshold. The method was applied to a sand sample, identifying 803 particles without prior visual sorting, showing automatic identification was robust and reliable even for weathered microplastics analyzed together with other matrix constituents. The HSI-NIR-SIMCA described is also applicable for microplastics extracted from other matrices after sample preparation. The HSI-NIR principals were compared to other common techniques used to microplastic chemical characterization. The results show the potential to use HSI-NIR combined with classification models as a comprehensive microplastic-type characterization screening.

Although liquid products derived from the pyrolysis of biomass are promising for the production of petroleum-like hydrocarbon fuels, the catalytic burden of hydrodeoxygenation must be reduced to achieve feasible upgrading processes. Herein, mild hydrotreating of an acid-rich biomass pyrolysis oil (bio-oil) with an unusually high total acid number (588 mg KOH/g bio-oil) was performed to stabilize the low-quality bio-oil. Ru-added TiO₂-supported transition metal catalysts stabilized the bio-oil by reducing its acidity more compared to what could be achieved by Ru-free catalysts; this process also leads to lower loss of organic compounds compared to when using a Ru/TiO₂ catalyst. Based on the performance of transition metal catalysts, including Ni, Co, and Cu, supported on TiO₂, tungstate-zirconia, or SiO₂, supported bimetallic catalysts were prepared by adding Ru to the TiO₂-supported metal catalysts. The bimetallic catalysts Ru/Ni/TiO₂ and Ru/Co/TiO₂ exhibited good decarboxylation activity for the removal of carboxylic acids and a higher yield of organic compounds compared to that provided by Ru, which can be deemed appropriate for feedstocks when hydrodeoxygenation needs to suppress the loss of organic reactants. Using these catalysts, the carboxylic acid concentration was reduced to 319–323 mg KOH/g bio-oil with organic yields of 62–63 wt% at reaction temperatures 150–170 °C lower than the temperature required for direct conversion of carboxylic acids to alcohols or deoxygenates. The improved catalytic hydrotreating activity of Ru-added transition metals can be attributed to the high acid site densities of these catalysts along with their improved hydrogenation activities.

Urban areas often contain large numbers of migratory bird species during seasonal migration, many of which are nocturnal migrants. How artificial light at night (ALAN) and urban landcover are associated with the diurnal occurrence of nocturnal migrants within urban areas across seasons has not been explored. Here, we use eBird bird occurrence information to estimate the seasonal species richness of nocturnally migrating passerines (NMP) within 333 well surveyed urban areas within the contiguous USA. We model the relationship between seasonal NMP species richness and ALAN, proportion of tree canopy cover, and proportion of impervious surface. NMP species richness reached its highest levels during spring and autumn migration and lowest during the winter and summer. Greater tree canopy cover was associated with higher NMP species richness during spring and autumn migration and the summer. A 10% increase in the proportion of tree canopy cover was associated with a 2.0% increase in NMP species richness during spring migration, a 1.8% increase during autumn migration, and a 0.9% increase during the summer. More impervious surface was associated with higher NMP species richness during the winter. A 10% increase in the proportion of impervious surface was associated with a 6.1–9.8% increase in NMP species richness. Higher ALAN was associated with lower NMP species richness during the winter and summer, and higher NMP species richness during spring and autumn migration. A 50% increase in ALAN was associated with a 3.0–3.6% decrease in NMP species richness during the winter, a 1.7% increase during spring migration, a 2.1% decrease during the summer, and a 5.0% increase during autumn migration. These findings highlight the variable effects of ALAN and urban landcover on the seasonal occurrence of NMP species in urban areas, the value of tree canopy cover during migration and the breeding season, and the importance of reducing ALAN during migration.

The presence of chemicals and the destruction of freshwater habitats have been addressed as one of the reasons for the decline in the amphibians’ populations worldwide. Considering the threat that these animals have been suffering in tropical regions, the present study tested if the Brazilian legislation, concerning the permissive levels of lithium and selenium in water bodies and effluents, warrants the protection of aquatic life. To do so, we assessed the metabolic, immunologic, and histopathologic alterations in liver samples of American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus), at the premetamorphic stage, through biomarkers indicative of general energetic status, i.e., glucose, lipid, and protein metabolism using biochemical and histochemical approaches. The immunologic responses were assessed by the quantification of melanomacrophage centres (MMCs); the histopathologic evaluation of the liver sections was also performed. The assay was carried out over 21 days with two periods of sampling (after 7 and 21 days) to assess the effects of exposure over time. The animals were exposed to the considered safe levels of lithium (2.5 mg L⁻¹) and selenium (10 μg L⁻¹), both, isolated and mixed. The exposed animals showed alterations in glucose and lipid metabolism throughout the experiment. The intense presence of MMCs and histopathological responses are compatible with hepatotoxicity. The toxicity expressed by the employed animal model indicates that the Brazilian environmental legislation for the protection of aquatic life needs to be updated. With this study, we intend to provide data for better environmental policies and bring attention to sublethal effects triggered by the presence of contaminants in the aquatic environment.

Anthropogenic noise in the oceans is disturbing marine life. Among other groups, pelagic fish are likely to be affected by sound from human activities, but so far have received relatively little attention. Offshore wind farms have become numerous and will become even more abundant in the next decades. Wind farms can be interesting to pelagic fish due to food abundance or fisheries restrictions. At the same time, construction of wind farms involves high levels of anthropogenic noise, likely disturbing and/or deterring pelagic fish. Here, we investigated whether bottom-moored echosounders are a suitable tool for studying the effects of impulsive – intermittent, high-intensity – anthropogenic noise on pelagic fish around wind farms and we explored the possible nature of their responses. Three different wind farms along the Dutch and Belgian coast were examined, one with exposure to the passing by of an experimental seismic survey with a full-scale airgun array, one with pile driving activity in an adjacent wind farm construction site and one control site without exposure. Two bottom-moored echosounders were placed in each wind farm and recorded fish presence and behaviour before, during and after the exposures. The echosounders were successful in detecting variation in the number of fish schools and their behaviour. During the seismic survey exposure there were significantly fewer, but more cohesive, schools than before, whereas during pile driving fish swam shallower with more cohesive schools. However, the types and magnitudes of response patterns were also observed at the control site with no impulsive sound exposure. We therefore stress the need for thorough replication beyond single case studies, before we can conclude that impulsive sounds, from either seismic surveys or pile driving, are a disturbing factor for pelagic fish in otherwise attractive habitat around wind farms.
