Distribution and risk assessment of trace metals in multifarious matrices of Vembanad Lake system, Peninsular India 全文

Trace metal contamination in aquatic ecosystems is of significant concern in countries like India having a recent industrial history. The present study mainly focuses on the spatial and temporal distribution, occurrence and toxicity of five trace metals (Hg, Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb) in water and sediment matrix of Vembanad Lake system (VLS), India. Mercury analysis was done by using Cold Vapor Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometer, and the other metals were analysed using Volta metric-Trace metal analyser. The spatial distribution of trace metals in the study area showed the following trends, Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd > Hg, Zn > Pb > Cu > Hg > Cd for surface water and bottom water respectively. Health risk assessment on human population associated with trace metals was also calculated to predict their health impacts on human through non-dietary exposure. The trace metals contamination in water and sediments of VLS are potential to cause cancer on human population associated with the system. Ecological risk indices showed that the northern portion of VLS is more contaminated with trace metal than the other part of the system.

Human-induced eutrophication of coastal water may be a major threat to aquatic life. Here, we investigated the effects of N-rich well amelioration brines (WAB) on coastal phytoplankton population's habitat in the surface oligotrophic waters of the southeastern Mediterranean Sea (SEM). To this end, we added WAB (2 concentrations) to mesocosms (1-m³ bags) to surface SEM water during summer and winter, where changes in phytoplankton biomass, activity and diversity was monitored daily for 8 days. Our results demonstrate that WAB addition triggered a phytoplankton bloom, resulting in elevated algal biomass (maximal +780%), increased primary production rates (maximal +675%) and a decrease in eukaryotic algal α-diversity (ca. −20%). Among the species that bloomed following WAB amendments, we found the potentially toxic dinoflagellate Karlodinium venificum. This study adds valuable perspective to the effect of nutrients discharged into nutrient limited SEM coastal waters, and in particular of N-derived WAB.

The heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Zn, Cd, Pb) were analysed for 217 surface sediment samples collected across 14 typical intertidal zone areas in China. The data reveals the heavy metals spatial distribution patterns and correlations among their concentrations. Cu, Zn, Cd and Cr showed similar trends of spatial variation and the correlations between the concentrations of every two heavy metals were significantly positive except for the correlation between Pb and Cr concentrations. By using Nemerow index method, Enrichment factor and Sediment Quality Guidelines, it is found that Hangzhou Bay and Jiulong River Estuary were polluted, Yingluo Bay and Dongzhaigang Bay were Cd-rich areas. Except Beidaihe shoal, Sishili Bay and Yingluo Bay that were not exposed to any ecological risk of heavy metals and had no adverse biotoxic effects, the other 11 typical intertidal zone areas were exposed to moderate ecological risk of heavy metals in the sediment with potential adverse biotoxic effects.

Sediment samples were collected from Caofeidian Long Island, China to investigate the contamination level and distribution pattern of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Source identification and risk assessment were also performed on these PAHs. The distribution patterns and source identification results indicated that the PAHs in the survey area originated from coal, biomass, and petroleum combustion as well as the combination of these three processes. Although the concentration of fluorene in the sediment exceeded the ERL level in some sampling sites, the effect range low–effect range median ratio implied a relatively low level of toxicity in these sediments. Meanwhile, the mean effects range–median quotient indicated that the 16 PAHs in sediments from Caofeidian Long Island pose a low ecological risk.

The strandline is one of the first deposition habitats of microplastics before they are integrated to the beach as a standing stock or finally removed. Beaches, entirely or partially protected by beachrocks, have different sediment dynamics and therefore may present variation in microplastic deposition. The aim of this work was to test if protected and unprotected (i.e., exposed to waves) areas of a sandy beach present different microplastic accumulation on the strandline – a habitat greatly influenced by both water and sediment dynamics. Microplastic (MP) amounts were significantly higher at the protected area (Mprotected = 642.6 ± 514.8 MP m−2, Mexposed = 130.6 ± 126.8 MP m−2, Mann-Whitney U test, U = 14.5, p = 0.0009), showing that beachrocks influence microplastic accumulation on the beach face. Therefore, hard structures parallel to the beach may also affect microplastics deposition on beach sediments, being important to consider these structures on microplastic surveys.

A bloom of putatively non-indigenous species (NIS) Prorocentrum shikokuense was detected for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea at the Brindisi harbor (Southern Adriatic Sea) on September 2016, in the context of EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive monitoring in the ports. This species is usually observed in the East China Sea and Japanese and Korean waters. In the Brindisi harbor this dinoflagellate reached the concentration 105 cell/L and represented from 30 to 50% of the total phytoplankton population. Besides this event, Prorocentrum shikokuense has not been found blooming until today in Mediterranean waters. This study suggests the necessity to improve the monitoring surveys in areas that are known vulnerable systems to alien and invasive species, such as ports.

Dredging poses a potential threat to coral reefs, yet quantifying impacts is often difficult due to the large spatial footprint of potential effects and co-occurrence of other disturbances. Here we analyzed in situ monitoring data and remotely-sensed sediment plumes to assess impacts of the 2013–2015 Port of Miami dredging on corals and reef habitat. To control for contemporaneous bleaching and disease, we analyzed the spatial distribution of impacts in relation to the dredged channel. Areas closer to dredging experienced higher sediment trap accumulation, benthic sediment cover, coral burial, and coral mortality, and our spatial analyses indicate that >560,000 corals were killed within 0.5 km, with impacts likely extending over 5–10 km. The occurrence of sediment plumes explained ~60% of spatial variability in measured impacts, suggesting that remotely-sensed plumes, when properly calibrated against in situ monitoring data, can reliably estimate the magnitude and extent of dredging impacts.

Pot fisheries occur worldwide with a significant proportion of the gear becoming derelict. Derelict pots induce detrimental ecological and economic impacts, and more recently were found to reduce blue crab harvests in the Chesapeake Bay commercial fishery. We simulated the presence of derelict pots near actively fished pots in seasonal field experiments to quantify the effect derelict pots have on blue crab harvest. Derelict pots reduced harvests by 30% during the summer, but not during the fall. Female blue crab capture rates were consistently lower when derelict pots were present; while capture rates of the less abundant males were not negatively affected by derelict pots. Variable responses to derelict pots may be due to seasonal differences in female and male blue crab behavior and movements. The costly effect that derelict pots have on harvest should be investigated in other pot fisheries to recognize the magnitude and mechanisms behind these impacts.

Cadmium has had a number of historical applications in plastics but is now highly regulated. In this study, plastics containing pigmented or recycled Cd at concentrations up to 16,300 μg g⁻¹ were processed into microplastic-sized fragments and added to clean estuarine sediment. Plastic-sediment mixtures (mass ratio = 1:100) were subsequently exposed to fluids simulating the digestive conditions encountered in marine deposit-feeding invertebrates prepared from a protein and a bile acid surfactant in seawater and the mobilization of Cd measured as a function of time. Kinetic profiles over a six-hour period were complex, with some fitted using a diffusion model and others exhibiting evidence of Cd interactions between the plastic and sediment surface. The maximum concentration of Cd released from plastic-sediment mixtures was about 0.8 μg g⁻¹ and orders of magnitude greater than Cd mobilization from sediment alone. It is predicted that large communities of deposit-feeders could mobilize significant quantities of Cd from historical microplastics.

Plastic pollution is a pervasive problem to marine life. This study aimed (1) to investigate levels of microplastic in wild and farmed mussels (Perna perna), and (2) to assess the effectiveness of depuration in reducing microplastics. Wild and farmed mussels were sampled from Guanabara Bay (Southwestern Atlantic). Four treatments were compared (N = 10 mussels/treatment): wild non-depurated mussels, wild depurated mussels, farmed non-depurated mussels, and farmed depurated mussels. Up to 31.2 ± 17.8 microplastics/mussel (≥0.45 μm) were detected (means ± SD), and microplastics were present in all 40 individuals analyzed. Nylon fibers were more abundant than polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) fragments. Blue, transparent, and red nylon fibers were more abundant in both wild and farmed mussels. Although 93 h-depuration significantly reduced microplastics (ANOVA, p = 0.02) in both wild (46.79%) and farmed mussels (28.95%), differences between farmed and wild mussels were not significant (p > 0.05). Depuration was more effective in removing blue fibers. Our results highlight the importance of depuration in reducing microplastic pollution in seafood.
