The aim of the study was the investigation of bacterial diversity from sediments collected at Santos Estuarine System, regarding to their abilities for hexadecane biotransformation. Hexadecane is a medium-chain linear alkane, considered as a model molecule for hydrocarbon biodegradation studies. It is a component from aliphatic fraction of crude petroleum, commonly related to environmental contamination by diesel oil. Santos Basin is an area with historical petroleum contamination. In the present work, sediment samples from this area were inoculated in artificial seawater (ASW), containing hexadecane as carbon source. Six bacterial isolates were selected as resistant to hexadecane. Chromatographic results showed biodegradation indexes above 97%. After 48 h of culture, five of them could degrade >80% of the initial hexadecane added. These isolates were characterized by 16S rDNA gene sequencing analysis. The following species were found: Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Micrococcus luteus, Nitratireductor aquimarinus, and Bacillus pumilus.

Mangroves connect terrestrial and marine ecosystems and are sensitive to environmental change, and the sediments within faithfully record long-term changes in the aquatic environment and supplement the generally short monitoring archives. Here we present a sediment-core record of TN, TP, TOC, and C/N ratios from the Futian mangrove wetland, Shenzhen Bay (South China), and compare with our remote sensing-derived land use change and the nearby seawater monitoring records. Our reconstructed record extends the history of tropic state change back to the Year 1958, supplementing the monitoring activity initiated in 1987. More importantly, the results reveal two distinct periods. The pre-1983 period (Year 1958–1982) is characterized by increased nutrient due to agricultural activities, while the post-1983 period (Year 1983–2014) is marked by reduced TP but relatively stable TN values, during which the simultaneous increase in construction lands and C/N ratios suggests enhanced soil erosion due to the rapid urbanization of Shenzhen City.

In order to understand how darkness/irradiance and low nighttime temperature might alter physiology of Ulva prolifera under lower salinity conditions, we analyzed the growth rates, water content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, total soluble proteins (SPs) and carbohydrates content at the end of dark and light period under three temperature levels (25–25 °C treatment: 25 °C for day and night; 15–15 °C treatment: 15 °C for day and night; 25–15 °C treatment: 25 °C for day with 15 °C for night) and two salinity conditions (15, 25), meanwhile, the pigment content (chlorophyll a and b), chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic oxygen evolution also were determined during light phase. We found that the U. prolifera showed higher growth rate and SOD activity during dark phase at 25 °C, but this dark-induced increase could not be observed at 15 °C. The reasons for this increase varied, however, maybe not included water content and SPs for no significant difference in water content observed under all the treatments, as well as lower SPs content for dark period aside that at 15 °C and salinity 15. Compared to other two temperature treatments, the thalli grown at 25–15 °C showed higher growth rate and the photosynthetic oxygen evolution rate in light phase under salinity 15 conditions, although the maximum relative electron transport rate (rETRₘₐₓ) showed higher value under 25 °C treatment. These results indicate that the darkness and the lower nighttime temperature maybe responsible reason for the rapid growth of these green tide algae.

Chen, Baohong | Kang, Wang | Kuai, Lin
Akashiwo sanguinea is a harmful—but not toxic—species that causes blooms around the world. In China, the first A. sanguinea bloom was recorded in Yantai in 1998. Until 2017, there were 31 occurrences of A. sanguinea blooms recorded in Chinese four seas, with large spatial distributions. Furthermore, these blooms were recorded in almost every month except November, December and January. It can be concluded that the 1990s represented the initial stage of A. sanguinea blooms, while the 2000s represented the spreading stage and the 2010s represented the burst stage in China.

The aim of this research was to assess the impact of hydrotechnical works within the riverbed and riparian zone on the mobility of mercury in soil and its outflow to the river and the sea. Deepening and reconstruction of the riverbed or the cutting of reeds, influenced the fate of mercury in the river system. However, only activitis that disturbed the riperian zone increased mobilization of Hg in soils. Hg transformations in these places were controled by inflow of fresh organic matter in soil and sediments as well as by oxidation-reduction potential. In areas where reducing conditions occurred, mercury released from the soil was incorporated into the sediment. However, in areas where oxidizing conditions prevailed in the sediment, mercury flowing out of the soil occurred mainly in dissolved form and most of it was transported downstream from where it could reach the sea.

Increasing evidence shows that herbivores can facilitate plant growth and maintain the resistance of plant communities to trophic consumption in a variety of ecosystems. However, the positive effects of herbivores on annual saltmarsh plants in coastal ecosystems are relatively understudied. In this study, field investigations and manipulative experiments were conducted to explore whether and how microtopographical modification by the herbivorous crab Helice tientsinensis stimulates the growth of the saltmarsh plant Suaeda salsa. Results showed that, despite grazing on S. salsa, H. tientsinensis can promote density, total biomass, average plant height, average root length, and average biomass through burrowing-generated concave-convex microtopography, which can improve the edaphic environment (decreased soil hardness and salinity, and increased soil moisture content, oxidation-reduction potential, and carbon and nitrogen content), and provide plants more clustered growth opportunities that could facilitate positive intraspecific plant interactions. This study can provide scientific guidance for ecosystem restoration in coastal intertidal saltmarshes.

This is the first study on polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in fish from the Cau Hai lagoon, a part of the largest coastal lagoon in Southeast Asia. Seven selected PCB congeners and organochlorine pesticides in sediments and edible fish tissues were quantified by GC–MS. The sum of ICES-7 PCB and DDTs concentrations in fish species consumed regularly and of economic value were in ranges 26–43 ng g−1 lw and 182–277 ng g−1 lw, respectively. The ratio between the parent DDT compound and the sum of metabolites, DDE and DDD, was most of the time smaller than 1, suggesting primarily an historical contamination of the lagoon. An agglomerative hierarchical clustering indicates sites located in the north-western part of the Cau Hai lagoon were characterized by above-average concentrations of DDE and DDT. Comparing to previous data, a large decrease in ∑DDT residues can be seen over the past 20 years.

A new tool was developed for microplastics (MPs) investigation in the water column. It can collect several cubic meters of water from predefined water layers down to 100 m. The tool was tested in the Baltic Sea during the period of spring thermocline formation. Strong MPs stratification was observed at all of the sampled stations. On coastal stations (~30 m deep), stratification with high fibers content was associated with the proximity of terrestrial sources and estuarine discharges, while on off-shore stations the variability of MPs was related to vertical thermohaline structure. Mean MPs content was the 32.2 (SD 50.4) pcs/m³. Elevated MPs concentrations were observed in subsurface, near-bottom and thermohaline layers compared with intermediate layers. The heterogeneity of MPs distribution suggests that MPs particles can be retained above the density-gradient layers in coastal seas and the World Ocean.

2019
Sarma, V.V.S.S. | Patil, J.S. | Shankar, D. | Anil, A.C.
The northeastern Arabian Sea (NEAS) experiences convective mixing during winter, but this mixing does not reach up to the silicicline, resulting in the limited supply of silicate (Si) compared to nitrate (N) and phosphate (P) to the mixed layer (ML) and formation of non-diatom blooms. The poleward advection of waters of low surface salinity by the West India Coastal Current (WICC) to the NEAS weakens the vertical mixing and reduces the Si input to the mixed layer, resulting in occurrence of Noctiluca scintillans blooms. The saturation of dissolved oxygen in the NEAS varied between 88 and 98%, suggesting N. scintillans blooms occur in oxic conditions. Enhanced cell abundance of N. scintillans was observed in the bloom region in the upper 10 m. Phytoplankton pigments data revealed higher contribution of Chlorophytes, Prasinophytes, Prymnesiophytes and Prochlorophytes in the bloom than non-bloom region. The isotopic composition of nitrogen and carbon of particulate organic matter indicated that natural and in situ processes contributed to both nutrients and organic carbon pool in the NEAS in supporting the massive occurrence of N. scintillans blooms than hitherto hypothesized to anthropogenic sources. This study further suggests that the effect of anthropogenic pollutants released into the NEAS from the mega-cities is limited to the neighbourhood of these cities and does not affect the open ocean.

Aquatic wildlife is exposed through trophic transfer of hazardous substances to several threats inducing physiological impairments. We aimed at assessing the impact of contamination in one of the hot spots of pollution along Mediterranean coasts, the gulf of Gabes in Tunisia, on Common tern Sterna hirundo, a piscivorous top predator bird. Firstly, we compared the reproductive effort of breeding adults through clutch size distribution in three sites with different levels of pollution. Then, a battery of genotoxicity and oxidative stress biomarkers was carried out to assess physiological impairments in chicks. While defense mechanisms showed a depletion, lipid peroxidation and genotoxicity increased significantly according to pollution level. The multi-biomarker approach used here, discriminated chicks according to contamination degree of their nesting sites. Increases in genotoxicity and oxidative stress were correlated to a decrease in chick body mass known to lead to long-term impacts on juvenile survival and recruitment in birds.
